  • The special appeal of James Bond locations lies in their ability to transport the audience to visually stunning, culturally rich, and often exotic settings that complement the spy and adventure themes of the films. BUT, for Bond fans around the world it goes MUCH deeper than that. Join Kyle Barbeau and I for a discussion on this 007 journey across the globe!

Last November (in 2023), we were in Lisbon. While looking at watches through the window of a jewelry store, I decided to walk in & started speaking to a lovely lady who works there. She told me that the store was a Bond location & showed me a photo to prove it. It was the store where Bond bought the engagement ring for Tracy. Very fraking cool!

Been going to the Bahamas throughout my 24 years and its always so exciting to visit and walk where both Sean Connery and Daniel Craig have walked on screen. You get those chills, plus its nice to read Thunderball outside getting a tan!

My biggest stand out Bond location moment was being at the Monastery of the Holy Trinity at Meteora, (Greece) where Roger Moore filmed the climax of FYEO. Because it was such an austere, holy place, but the monks still gave permission to film there BECAUSE it was Bond was really something special, and the beauty and uniqueness of the setting was unbeatable.

Jamaica for me was my favorite so far. Being in the same place as Roger Moore, walking the same walk from his resort room to the filming locations, and then also the same beach and river falls as Sean Connery. It really is transforming. My wife looked at me funny because I was acting as if I was on holy ground, lol. Then I was in France and Las Vegas in the past, but did not realize I was at filming locations and I know I would have enjoyed being there so much more if I had only realized it. And it does change your view of the movies once you have been to a location. I even like certain movies better because of that very reason. Thanks for the great discussion!!!

I just had the same Jamaica experience in Nov '23...so cool, right! We stayed at Jamaica Inn next door to Couples San Souci where the Moore suite, LALD filming locations, and hit Laughing Waters for the beach scene re-enacting! My wife didn't get it before, but I think she is starting to!

@@frankb821 Nice!! Yeah we stayed at a couples resort, and we were able to do a resort swap day, so we spent the day at the one they filmed at in Live and Let Die. I got footage of Roger Moore's suite and the entrance area, all cool stuff. It was a highlight of the trip for sure.

That's awesome man! We did a boat ride by the "nude beach" part of Couples San Souci, and my wife freaked out haha. I was like "hey, that part wasn't in the movie!"@@agent00asmr

Specialness of the Bond locations? They are absolutely Glamorous
IMO Bond's locations are often chosen for their glamour, intrigue, and exoticism.
From iconic cities like London and Paris to picturesque locales like the beaches of Jamaica or the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps. These settings add to the sense of adventure and provide a backdrop for the tactical espionage and action that characterize Bond films.
Morover, the decision of locations allows the director to showcase stunning scenery and incorporate thrilling sequences, making them an integral part of the "Bond experience." (No Pun intended David)😉

I loved Star Wars, Superman and James Bond as a kid. Out of all three though Roger Moore was my true hero. I watched TSWLM in the cinema and it was mind blowing. Moonraker followed and Roger in a space shuttle shooting down life ending orchid satelites was like a Star Wars and 007 match made in heaven. FYEO was back to earth but not with a bump, it was amazing. In 1982 my parents decided to go abroad for our family holiday for the first time. They chose Corfu. It wasnt until I got there and heard the tour guides talking that I realised it was where they filmed FYEO. I managed to find out where the locations were and bought an island map. I plotted the journey with Greek bus timetables and set off with my dad to the casino Roger had met General Veers. After hours of travel and hiking in blistering heat I arived ar the Achiles Palace. One memory I will never forget

For me the liveliness of the Mexico city location for Specter and License to Kll was fantastic. My wife and I enjoyed Matera and being right in those locations that still look exactly the same. I think I'll also never forget the scale of standing near the actual Goldeneye dish in Puerto Rico before it was damaged by the storms. It's fun taking a bit of Bond to all my travels.

On next March I will go to London for the first time and I'm so excited to visit one of the main Bond locations can't wait to tell you how will the experience was because it's the first proper Bond location I will visit as a Bond fan.To be honest I've been to Lake Garda where QoS filmed and Venice where FRWL, Casino Royale and Moonraker filmed, but I was young at that time I never watched a Bond movie before so I couldn't appreciate and feel the Bond moment imagining the action scenes. Thanks David for sharing your epxerience and your friend Kyle greetings from Malta 🇲🇹, I wish to see you in person when you organize a Gatherall nearby when plan to travel especially.

A terrific video The Bond Experience!! While I have only ever been to one Bond location (thus far anyway) I will always treasure the memories of going there. It was San Francisco in 1999 and it meant so much to me because my first ever memory of seeing a Bond film was "A View To A Kill" when I was only 8 years of age upon the films release. I literally pictured (in my head) Bond and Zorin fighting on The Golden Gate Bridge as a passenger driving over it. Visiting Fisherman's Wharf was wonderful and it was a joy seeing the iconic cable cars. Treasured memories all round!

If you're going to Thailand this year and heading to ' Bond Island ' I would suggest you go as early in the morning as possible. My wife and I visited this a few years ago and got there first thing in the morning which meant there wasn't that many people. We stayed roughly an hour and by the time we were leaving, literally boat loads of tourists were turning up so differently start early and if you can, chart a private boat as it's not that expensive. If your staying in Bangkok, we stayed at the ' Mandarin Oriental ' which is highly recommended. Not only is it right next to the river but it's where bond meets goodnight, the garden still reminiscent of their appearance in the film, even though the decor has been updated.

Been in Palmyra in the Bahamas 12 years ago. The former owner, of the house, an old greek, gave us a long tour. It was not that worn down that time, but nonetheless not in good shape. Was my coolest Bond location experience so far.

Ko Khao Phing Kan ( James Bond Island ) near Phuket looks the same as in the movie; only there are large crowds of tourists there. Beautiful location, I have been there 2 times and found it magical each time .Make sure you visit the Klongs in Bangkok and be a tourist like Sheriff JW Pepper !

Probably my favourite location, purely for the visceral thrill of finding the place would be the Training Mission House from Never Say Never Again. Least favourite might be Vegas, in general. But this last, similarly, might also be due to my advancing age and more matured proclivities...

Are Bond locations special because Bond has been there? Or are they Bond locations because they are special? I mean Bond has a sophisticated taste and so do the Bond villains. So the poor guy has no choice but to go there.😉
I now live nearby another Bond location, the Atlantic Hotel in Hamburg, where Tomorrow Never Dies has been filmed but my favourite Bond location (out of those I've been to) has always been Hong Kong. Entering the Peninsula for the first time felt really special. But although it was not an actual film location it was, at least for me, always a very Bond'ish moment to enter the Aqua Spirit. Bond would have liked it.

Speaking of Bond locations, I think it's time we moved into Act 2 in our story. Bond has just had his Laurence of Arabia moment, and is now back in Cairo.
    [Scene 9]
Yasmin Al'Kahool is the teenage daughter of the manager of the hotel, in charge of dusting out the rooms. "I ham Yasmeen." she says bowing "I have good Engalsh, Yes?". "Trust me my dear, after the week I've had, I could propose to a lame spitting camel." "You arrr welcome", she says bowing and leaving the room. After a few hours of rest, Bond goes downstairs to wire London. and then goes out in the direction of the bustling port by the river. A man with the bald head and a scar nods to Yasmin as Bond leaves the hotel, and she begins to follow him on foot. Bond senses the trap, and starts to run - turning over baskets and bumping into people. Yasmin knows the streets a lot better than him, and takes all the shortcuts and back routes to thwart his every turn. Eventually they both run head-on into each other with a bump!, almost knocking each other out. "Why are you following me?" Bond asks as he holds her by the throat, just as the man with the scar shows up in a black vehicle, and briskly starts walking towards him two grim-looking henchmen. Bond grabs the girl, and they race through the port, and eventually run onto a boat, just as the gang plank is being raised. Bond lifts his fez as if you say goodbye, as the men are left on the dock side waving their arms about.
Their grubby sweat-box boat to Istanbul takes a few days. Enough time at last for Bond to relax. Yasmin is locked inside the cabin as a stow-away. A friendly sailor smuggles in food for her, after some persuasion. Bond shaves off his week old beard, but leaves the moustache in place as a disguise. With his darkened skin covered with red blotches and boils, and wearing his fez and blanket combo, he steps off the boat in Istanbul looking like a native. The 'newly wedded couple' are booked into the Al Madira hotel. Bond sends a wire to London to let them know of his arrival, and then buys a shiny black cigarette holder from a street seller. Yasmin takes a bath, while Bond checks back at reception for a reply. His contact will arrive tomorrow morning by boat. Time enough, it seems, for a day of seeing the signs, and a whispering candle lit dinner for two in the evening.
They head back to the extremely noisily thronged port early the next morning to see a familiar face. "HELLO!!!", shouts a man, who promptly staggers and falls off the gang plank. A rope is thrown down to him. Yasmin points her finger: "You know heem?" "Yes, his name's Major Heameroids." Yasmin shouts, "Hallo Mayor Hem-roids!". A spluttering, half-drowned man stands on the dock: "Ahhhh, Hello Everybody. Welcome welcome.... ..Bond?! - you're late!, we expected you over a week ago!?" "Sorry old boy, I took a detour down the old Dog and Bucket for a while." "Never mind about all that now, here's your suitcase. I trust it all fits??" Bond opens a brown leather suitcase and finds a pair of black trousers, a white shirt, an evening jacket, a handkerchief, a Turkish pest control licence, and a long black tie. The shoes are a bit too small, but other than that, it's a perfect match. Bond hands the blanket and the fez combo back to Q. In exchange, Q hands him a dossier. "Oh, one last thing" says Q. "We've fitted an experimental tracker device into your tie. The length of the tie is enough to hide the transmitter wire. We can hear everything that you can hear within 10 feet of you, but due to a resonance feedback loop created by the knot in your tie, you'll have to waggle the knot each time you sit down, or do something crazy, to maintain the signal." Bond raises an eyebrow. Q continues: "We'll beat back any messages to you using this Morse Code nipple clamp". He attaches the Crocodile clips. Bond: "OW!".
[Steal food for Yasmin and have sex with her as many times as you can until the boat docks. Get the Fleming black cigarette holder. Meet Q, get the Tux and Licence to Kill card]

James Bond Island not a business? Prepare for disappointment. The Man With the Golden Gun is an old favourite of mine and I was really looking forward to standing where Roger Moore and Christopher Lee stood, but every single tour group diverts there, the entire thing has been concreted and there are countless stalls set up to sell cheap useless plastic rubbish. It barely looks like the location from the movie, all the beauty has been utterly destroyed. It didn't help that my boat sank on the way there, forcing us to jump ship to another.
