this is tricky: if trump does what he says, things will likely be very horrible, and very likely crush the maga movement. but everybody is fighting back, so hard he might back down. if he backs down, he gets to ride the coattails of Biden's economy, ppl will suddenly think things have changed for the better, give credit to trump, and maga will grow stronger. so if we hope for him to fail, if we fight back, we might give him more power. if we hope for him to succeed, that means not pushing back, which makes everyone hurt.
Mexico threw us under the bus the last time Trump was in office by negotiating side-deals in NAFTA 2.0 without consulting us, and then together both Mexico and the USA pressured us to accept the terms of the new deal. Plus, all the stuff that Trump is talking about -- massive amounts of drugs crossing the border, massive amounts of undocumented migrants crossing the border, that's 95% Mexico, 5% Canada. Should we be tarred with the same brush as Mexico just because we're part of the same trade agreement?
I already am. I am making sure that the goods from Mexico are the ones I buy, not California (sorry but that's how international trade is done). I know others who are considering the same thing.

Since he has supported Trudeau's minority government for about three years, he will sink with him and probably won't be the NDP's leader after next elections, which will probably happen next year.

Two things to think about when it comes to bullying my country: 1- We are innately polite, helpful neighbours and allies to all nations. 2- We also invented ice hockey.
We were also involved in both World Wars well before the US got involved. The term "Shock troops" was invented for a group of Canadian soldiers in WWI. Vimy Ridge, which the British had fought for, for three years and thousands of deaths was taken by the Canadians in a single day.
It's been rough to watch this play out, I'd rather not be fighting with our neighbour but I'm not surprised Trump is picking fights with us for no reason.
Hey there from the great white north. Thanks for treating us like actual people, Belle. Much appreciated. I'm beginning to feel like we're the butt of some joke down there. I also want to add a couple points to your comments, from the perspective of an old lady in Northern Ontario. We in Ontario supply a lot of electricity to the United States, and we pay to do so. We pay line and transportation fees that cover the lines going down there while we produce more electricity than we use and pay the same or slightly lower kWh rates than people who buy it from us. Ontario's current average price for electricity is 11.9 cents per/kWh. Michigan is 17.8 cents per/kWh but with the exchange rates, Michigan consumers are buying our electricity at 12.5 cents per/kWh. I'm sure their suppliers are charging consumers more than they pay us for it. Alberta produces oil from the tarsands at a loss and at an extreme environmental/social cost to the Indigenous people of the province. We're not very into the idea of getting worse deals on resource production, especially as we move to more electric vehicles placing increasing demands on the grid we share with the Northeastern and Midwestern U.S.A. Y'all got a great deal in your trade agreements with us and Trump should really think twice about calling us the 51st state and then tearing up those agreements. In case you forgot, we did burn down the White House once. We're like Mr. Rogers next door until you start threatening our sovereignty. Speaking as a Canadian, the amount of anger that Trump's comments are creating is frightening. Especially the "51st state" comments. It should serve as a warning that not only does Canada's population consist of an awful lot of "we'll fight you for generations if necessary" cultural groups (Irish, Scottish, French farmers, people from India, Afghanis, Syrians, and so on), Canada is also home to the largest concentration of Ukrainian immigrants (and their children and grandchildren) outside of Ukraine and Russia.

First, thank you for getting everyone's names and jobs right. I saw an article from a major outlet talking about Ford that showed a picture of his dead brother (that's a whole other story, Rob Ford, for those who have some time and curiosity). Second, thank you for reminding me that Canada isn't the joke that it sometime feel like, and Trump certainly tried to make us look like. We most certainly would, and will likely suffer from Trump Shenanigans, but we do have tools in the toolbox, and while we might not be able to stand toe to toe with the US, we can definitely stand up to Trump.
I live in WA and know many many Canadians. They are the nicest, most polite country. It’s actually a joke here when talking about super blunt rude Americans that “that person is so rude they could start a war with Canada”. It was a joke…. Not a challenge!!
I like that Belle has shown a little edge recently. We aren't always going to be able to take every "high road" through all of this. It's part of the reason we're in this mess to begin with.
As a never Trumper, I am baffled by the stupidity of the man and those that voted for him. As a resident of Washington state I think we should join become a province of Canada. Maybe Oregon and California also.
You'd have to live with our gun laws too. Mind you, our laws are mainly designed to reduce guns in the hands of careless idiots and jerks with anger management issues.
California native here, and I agree with this. Not only would it benefit us to be part of a sane and reasonable country, it would be a huge help to Canada to have ports from Mexico to Alaska. I'd be more than delighted to live with sane gun laws too!
Don’t mind Doug Ford. He’s a Trumper, and shoots off his mouth like a 2am Trump tweet. However, I wouldn’t underestimate Justin Trudeau, or Canadians uniting to fend off Trump.
I've stopped traveling to the US when Trump was first elected. I went back once during Biden's term in office and custom officets were all suspicious because I use to go often and stopped for a few years. Told them I would not spend my money in a country who tries to destabilize our economy. Ps: I live within minutes of Vermont.
A huge part of the problem is Trump making a public threat. I'm confident he could have gotten just about whatever he wanted on border security with a private phone call, or even a public polite request. But by picking a fight, instead he will get a fight.
Doug Ford had it WRONG. The better option is to tag team with Mexico. No one is talking about Mexico's long term shipping project. They are building major ports on Pacific and Atlantic coasts with extensive, high tech rail connections between. As the Panama Canal fails Mexico's project will change world shipping forever. Mexico already has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, a flourishing middle-class and well thought out social programs. Doug Ford is showing his ignorance and should think before he speaks. Mexico and Canada in concert could exert enormous pressure. The two countries can move goods to both coasts more effectively without entering the US. Bring it.
The best thing that Mexico has done is to elect Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo as its' first female President!!! I appreciate her standing up to Trump. And telling him what he could do with his tariffs!!!!
Hey Belle, Canadian fan here. Love hearing us mentioned on the channel. None of us really want this. This is interrupting something that never needed tampering with. I really hope these next 4 years are quick and painless, but the incoming elected leader seems intent on otherwise.
Hey there from the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario. I very much dislike our premier, Doug Ford. I didn’t vote for him. He’s a lot lie Trump in many ways. He’s been gradually chipping away our healthcare system. He’s very loyal to his rich cronies. So… the fact that he’s threatening to cut off the energy we sell to the USA makes me not believe him at all. That would impact the wallets of his buddies and he can’t have that.
Nah he will full send it, then roll it back if it polls badly and delay an election until the general population forgets. Like everything else he champions...
As an American I really hope you're wrong so our dumbest can get hit with the full impact of the consequences of their complicity and/or complacency in some far-flung hope it'll knock some sense into them, but as a Leftist I know exactly what you mean. From what I've gathered and I don't know if Canada's any exception, Non-American Conservatives seem like they're rarely out to do anything but maintain a convenient Status Quo, but the Trump comparison does NOT reassure in that regard. Still, who knows? The scariest part of these times we live in is that I can't tell sabre rattling from legitimate insanity and recklessness anymore.
But tariffs on all the things Ontario sells to the US would impact them more. Gonna be a very cold, dark winter in New York, Michigan and Wisconsin when we shut off their power.
He's thinking of the next provincial election. If the economy in Ontario suffers as it will with these tariffs, it'll look bad on him and he risks getting tossed in the next election. I'm all for him taking a strong pro Canada stance at this time. It still won't make me vote conservative ever.
Thanks for getting it. This Canadian feels absolutely heartsick. It is such a no-win situation. Canada will probably hurt more, but the US and every day Americans will hurt too. Really and truly.

Thank you, Belle and Team. Canada and Mexico are the major US trade partners ($807 bn overall in two-way trade with Mexico in 2023; $3.6 bn *per day* with Canada the same year). Attempting to bully our strongest allies, trading partners and neighbors has consequences. Mexico wasn't having it and Canada is rightfully pushing back. Not sorry.

Just a small note, I’m not always a fan of Premier Ford but I like his approach to Trump. I don’t however like his remarks about Mexico which he made before Trump taunted Trudeau about Canada becoming the 51st state.
Hi, from Canada. We understand exactly what Trump said. We understood when he said we had a giant faucet. We understand Trump talks in dollars, not alliances. I completely agree with Ford. You have to stand up to a bully.

if we hope for him to succeed, that means not pushing back, which makes everyone hurt.
As a Canadian, I think Canada should be co-operating with Mexico, not ousting them.

Spot on. As a Canadian, I can tell you that nobody up here finds Trump's musings about Canada becoming the 51st state the least bit freaking funny. Why he think America will be strengthened by needlessly antagonizing it's nearest neighbors and largest trading partners is anyone's guess.
Because he's a petty bully who HATES Trudeau for humiliating him at a G7 meeting .. diminishing trudeau to get under his skin is payback
I'd rather Canada adopt us!
Trudeau made him look weak and foolish when trump tried his signature handshake power move only to have it completely backfire on him. Donnie is just that level of childish and petty to pull this baloney for that and that alone.
I hope Canada schools the orange clown.

As a Canadian we know there are a lot of Americans who are sane, hard working, honest people who would not hurt their relationship with either Mexico, or us. However, there are also millions of dumb idiots who voted against their own best interests because they didn't follow the news or else they couldn't bear having a woman as president. Those Americans I want nothing to do with. I know I will never cross the border to the US again and I know a lot of others who feel the same way, because the politics sway so far, so fast and the entire country wears a different face each time. There is no stability there and too many stupid people who refuse to pay attention to what is happening or use critical thinking when they vote. It looked silly when Trumpers attempted to use this messaging/narrative after Biden won. They placed all their arguments on inflation and costs but forgot the president doesn't directly control these things.
But it'll be amusing reiterating that message for the Trumpers when they're complaining about the cost of groceries and gas in six months. I'll certainly be using it every opportunity unapologetically.
My homemade bumper sticker reads "Rump/Rancid 2024".

I believe Kamala said "They will eat you for lunch!"
I do have to agree with Trump on one little thing. We do need to bring our armed forces up to code . We’ve always been able to punch above our weight but we have sadly been ignoring our combat readiness for decades.
Problem is that the comments of the different Premiers show that we are not really together here. Not every Premier agrees with Doug Ford.

I don't want you to be sorry!!! America had a chance to vote for the future with Kamala Harris. And you saw the result!!! This is America: Adolescent, Arrogant, Belligerent, Uneducated and Ignorant!!! Watch Sharon Stone's speech from Italy!!!!
Wisconsin and Michigan both voted for Trump.
Very close vote! That is the problem . Half of the American voters are not Magats. Russia really won the information war! Half the voters voted for billionaires to lord over them and take away human rights!
Wisconsin has an oil pipeline that runs from Canada to oil refineries in the Chicago area.
But both have Dem governors who are on trump's fecal roster.
Yes, with a big ole spigot that can be turned *"OFF"* So mind your manners, US!
It might get cold and dark in Wisconsin and Michigan this winter.
The best thing about Trump is that he is uniting the liberal and conservative governments and people together. Stay strong fellow Canadians 💪
I'm sure we're gonna see this get a lot uglier before anything gets better
As a Canadian, thanks you very much Belle for pointing this out!
Come at us, eh! 🇨🇦
Thanks for a breath of fresh air and common sense, which seems to be in short supply these day.
Dont forget to keep yout stick on the ice, we're rootin for ya.
I believe they said...FAFO.
