Especially after the performance of the market yesterday (down 1100 pts.), and when you consider how badly the market is going to drop when GDP falls due to inflation that's coming under 🍊💩.

My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance.

A footnote to the Question, always remember those stock analysts on TV/news, are "Stock Brokers". They make money when you buy or sell, gain or lose. They are on there to drum up business and commissions. It helps when you keep that in mind listening to their perspectives.

Belle is right about it happening in the first two years of Trump's term; typically it is balanced on a knife's edge until some SPECIFIC incident is the pin that pops the bubble.
I suspect Trump's hand will be holding that pin.

I’m holding a fair amount of cash and will trim some positions after the new year. But this is why I like picking individual stocks, I know most of mine are not too far out of whack and can live with the correction.
I think it makes sense to pull out of the stock market in January, but not because it is a bubble. If Trump does what he claims he will do, and I think he will, it is going to be a disaster starting in February.
I think that's very wise.
Politics aside, it depends on your time horizon. My father liquidated his holding shortly into the pandemic when the market fell. If he had lived and stayed in a few more years, he would have done even better. Sometimes it better not to lose your head when others are losing theirs. Just saying; everyone has to decide for themselves.

What's going on in Washington is a "continuing resolution" to keep the government funded, I don't believe Washington DC has had a budget pass in quite a few years now, If they do come up with a full budget it'll be in conjunction with Trump in late January/early February.

There is a lot of average everyday Americans who's 401k's are tied to the stockmarket. You don't have to be rich to participate and be concerned about what happens in the market. It all depends on your needed time horizon for the invested money.

I looked it up a few years ago to correct for inflation and, at that time, it should have been about $23-$26 depending on which inflation calculator one used. Not sure about the stock market but probably more.

I am a lot less concerned about stock market history repeating than I am about Trump's tariffs crashing the economy. If we had Kamala Harris or Joe Biden in the White House, I would expect little to no stock growth as the underlying fundamentals caught up with the prices. A bear market with a drop of 10-20% would also be understandable and even likely. With the caveat that I am taking Trump at face value and assume that he will do what he has publicly and repeatedly said he wants, I see a major depression.
As long as MAGA is in charge, we are going to be hurting.

It's the mentality of a Mid Western person especially with money.He has at least 60 years of studying the market himself, not just listening to the sales pitch.

The stock market is forward-looking _perceived_ value. The economy is Main Street, and it more accurately reflects people's lives. For example, today, the Fed said they're gong to lower rates, but not wildly. Lowering rates almost always leads to increases in the stock market, but the market heard "not *wild* rate cuts", and in minutes, tanked over 1000 points. Of course, it always tanks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then it stagnates until New Years, then it recovers. In the long term, if you invest and hold in the stock market, you'll come out ahead, but you have to have the stomach for it.

If we see huge inflation, then the numeric value of the market may go up even as the real value goes down....
That might actually be the plan. Trigger inflation to prop up the numerical value of stock holdings to prevent a correction that forces overleveaged investors (like the CEOs who live off loans based off the value of their holdings) from going underwater on their holdings and getting their demand loans called by their bankers.
Dang, that’s a dark take.

The Market doing great has always been a symptom of over-exuberance. Watch what the S&P and the Russell do in late January (post Inauguration) also watch the VIX carefully if you are trying to time your sell-off. If you're not in at all, hold your powder and pick your bargains at the bottom.

P/E ratios are pretty extreme compared to historical averages, even for good years. As you said the S&P Average dropped then rebounded, but the rebound never stopped and its still overshooting its pre-drop pandemic high without a major correction. Just be ready when a major calamity takes place.

As a long term investor, the market is WAY overvalued. It's *really* hard to find anything that fairly valued let along under valued.

The stock market is not equivalent to the economy. The S&P 500 is doing great, but that means that its really expensive to buy into. When you buy something, you want to be able to eventually sell it for more than you bought it. The problem is that it's harder to make a sale when everyone bought expensive stocks and wants to sell for more money than they bought them for. New investors will eventually be turned off from the high prices. This means your ability to sell for a higher price will dwindle. For small investors, this will lead to loss, but for many big companies they will purchase for cheap. The reason that I THINK this has happened is because other areas like Europe are not growing, and China and India are not easy places for a foreigner to invest in due to laws and regulations, plus uncertainty of their governments possibly limiting or taking over private enterprise on a whim.
How do we prepare? Take money out of things like our 401k? Buy lots of rice, flour, canned beans & veggies? I'm in the process of buying a home.

The scary part is I cannot find an answer for where the safe money is going. What asset will survive the adjustment? Even diamonds are a dangerous place today. It seems we are in an "everything bubble" at the moment.

Diamonds were always due for a correction. The industry deliberately hordes them. As for safe investments, I'm stumped too. Value is certain to drop, but I guess the real question will be what is left. Especially if 47 and his anything but merry men have their way.
I'd have pointed out the gulf between main street and wall street too. As things become more and more structured for inequity, stonks will be more and more able to go up even when the street is on fire. Wall street is liable to be happy with that "short term pain" the oligarchs want to foist onto main street in order to theoretically move towards onshoring things. That will be a market up real economy down situation.
I bought the big crash in Aug, sep and Oct 2024 and made money each time. Buying this dip too.

The business section editors pinned the stock market newspaper pages on the wall and threw darts at it. They would invest the imaginary money on whatever stocks the darts landed on. Big banks and investment firms entered the challenge as well. A 10-year-old girl won the challenge by investing in diamonds. And the darts did better than the big banks and investment firms.
