Many drummers , perhaps all of us think it a chore to use the practice pad. However, we must use it as we learn how to properly hit an actual snare drum . We build finger and arm muscles as well as 'muscle memory' which in turn makes it easier each time we practice a new rudiment for the hundredth time. When I began taking drum lessons at 9 years old, I dreaded being made by my teacher to practice my sticking on that round bouncy piece of rubber glued onto a slanted configuration of wood. I wanted a REAL snare drum . As I became an adult I quickly understood why I had to use that practice pad and continue to use a six piece practice Kit. Now I've just learned an entirely NEW way of thinking about and actually using a practice kit...' Think of it as a percussion instrument...' Brilliant! Of course Evelyn, a genius percussionist would say this! She is amazing.
Non-musicians, and some players, often do not know just how much the body is in making music. I think that's why I love making music: my body, my mind and my spirit are working together at full power -- if I'm playing well.
Hi Tim, I learnt traditional and matched grip at the same time. Both were treated equally. About 90% of the time I use traditional for solo snare drum repertoire but need matched for playing the many varied multi drum set ups. Hope this helps :)
Evelyn Glennie is a treasure. Can't wait to see more from this series!
I could watch and listen to you all night !
Thank you for your knowledge Evelyn!

Hi Evelyn. Did you learn matched or traditional grip first? And was it difficult to learn the other one once you'd learnt the first?
