FYI judo has been around over 120 years A free fighting (not set routine combative system) was unique. Judoka high grades taught Gracie family. Kimura defeated Helio. These are facts. Judo guys would be privileged to learn BJJ techniques, in the same way that BJJ guys learnt off Judoka.
Quality of BJJ groundwork not better than before in Universities. I trained 4 hours a day every day in Japan (3.5 to 8hrs on mat/day.)
BJJ widespread & that's good. Many on BJJ team judo trained/influenced.

Not sure if you realize it, but the guy that did the heel hook was actually the BJJ guy. The belting system is different, too. Typically purple belts would have around 6-8 years of training. A judo black belt may have around the same amount of time, too, but was graded differently. So, it's probably a pretty even match as far as years of training go.

So many people think that bjj and judo are in a constant grudge match, but in reality there is much more camaraderie on the mat. You can't excel in either bjj or judo without good, teachable training partners.

Thanks. I like BJJ but prefer submission, because people adapt to become points fighters, rather than taking a victory. Judo is a prime example of that and has improved now we wiped the koka from scoring
A fighter that won by Ippons (KO victory) on one side of a draw compare another that competed not to lose on the other, koka small point , not risking attack, just countering. truly great fighters have a big attack capability and take risks towards success.

There are basically two camps in Jiu-Jitsu. There is the Carlson and Rolls philosophy of aggressive competition based Jiu-Jitsu and then there is Helio Gracie's lineage and its emphasis on more self defense oriented Jiu-Jitsu with it's focus on patiently tiring your opponent out before you submit him (allowing him to chose how he will be defeated). Helio adapted the "early" teachings of Jodo (at that time called Jiu-Jitsu) to accommodate his small size and lack of strength. He found he could not do a lot of the throws that were taught so he kept the ones he could do and modified other's (as a result of being small he learned to become comfortable on his back, eg.). Like Kano he adapted a lot of the Jiu-Jitsu he learned to maximize leverage. He NEVER claimed to have invented Jiu-Jitsu he simply made it better in many respects. I leave the debating to the zealots.

    • @JudoLife
      @JudoLife  10 років тому +2

we all improve the system in Judo, it's part of being informed as a teacher. Ju means adaptable. We are not studying correctly if we dont adapt. The question here is more was it correct to call the combative product of judo- jujitsu and name a school after one's self?
I think thats all good. To change the rules into a modern sport, from its combat base is also OK. The aggressive early marketing not so flash...But it was very effective. It has brought in $$$ and interest into an otherwise stagnating but popular Olympic sport. Marketing the self defense side...awesome!

It is why to this day we find KANJI (The Chinese Characters) in Japanese culture, that also includes the Heian Era of Japanese Dynasty... I am a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, and from what I have seen of the fights, I can speak, at least in the BJJ part, that the fighters do not seem to know much about the techniques of doing and guarding, as I have seen infantile mistakes that any beginner in the BJJ would know how to do it, it's unfortunate !!

Sure you are truly amazing, please post your video. It's unfortunate if you dont share your experiences. I certainly am a beginner in BJJ. Nice thoughts Sienna three. The same goes for you, if you like BJJ why not check out the kosen judo dojo it originated from. The judo I grew up with and captured me spirit, has recently altered for the worse, that's why I lament it's demise. It was very inclusive, but allowing politicians and administrators not decision making positions can fundamentally shape the rules we have with our combat sport.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu looks just like Judo, because it is Basically Just Judo. When Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Conde Koma", began teaching Carlos Gracie in Belem do Para, Brazil in 1917, he was teaching Jigoro Kano's Jiu-Jitsu direct from the Kodokan in Japan. The name "Judo" was not popularized until 1925.
Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo instructor whose specialty was ground fighting (newaza). This type of ground-only fighting is often referred to as Kosen Judo, or High School Judo, because it was popularized in Japanese High Schools as a form of interscholastic wrestling. Kosen Judo rules allowed direct transition to newaza, enabling scenarios where one less skilled competitor could drag the other down to the ground (a tactic now known as "pulling-guard" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu).

    • @blibluaha8156
      @blibluaha8156 7 років тому +1

Francisco Aglairton dude, that's not right. Maeda named his art jiujitsu, because the Kodokan and Jigoro Kano forbid any competition participation based on money, so he had to name judo to jiujitsu! there is a book about him 'the toughest man who ever lived" or something like that. Also, Maeda trained with many wrestlers and catch-wrestlers, and studied some jiujitsu before his judo-journey, so his style was not authentic judo! but you are right, oldschool gracie jiujitsu is pretty much pre-world war 2 judo! if you look into todays BJJ-No-Gi Meta, it is completely different if you compare it to todays judo, fuck, even if you compare it to oldschool judo. todays No-Gi BJJ is more wrestling oriented, and boroughs techniques from all useful forms of martial arts like Catch-Wrestling, Sambo, Judo also, Wrestling, Luta Livre etc...
thanks God many of todays grapplers are way more open minded to techniques, especially thanks to Eddie Bravo, who helped grappling in general with EBI-rules!

I think BJJ dont call it a spine lock, if the back is cranked in one direction only, comparing the receiver's chest and hip relative positions. Lower back (hyper) flexion isnt tolerated in judo, like this technique.

Jiu jitsu (or jujutsu) means: Ju/Jiu: Gentle jitsu/jutsu: (martial) Art--> The gentle Art
Judo: Ju: Gentle Do: Way/Philisophy--> The gentle Way
Now they sound alike dont they? Thats because they both come from the same school and have developed differently.
Judo focuses on throws and holding, while Jiu Jitsu focuses more on ground techniques. And both Arts are superior in their field. The Original Art had strikes and kicks, too. But since other systems did that better they specialized

classical jujitsu has many schools that throw but judo really developed this aspect by removing many strikes from contest.
Many of Judo's throws came from Kito Ryu Jujitsu, many were developed by Kano Sensei and students as a practicality from the new study of Randori or free fighting which characterized judo apart from jujitsu. BJJ shares this aspect and is very close to judo, more so than classical jujitsu because of this.
was there 4 BJJ teams in the tournament?

Kosen Judo is the basis of BJJ
If you study from that school; you can specialize in groundwork, & be more competent at Judo newaza. Most judo clubs give equal or more status to standing fighting because it is more combat effective in our Martial Art.
Its not smart for self defence to do ground work as your head will likely get kicked in. As a sport we acknowledge this fact, need to get up quick. BJJ has sport following,Am impressed thats great. There are good&bad judo dojo.

If you are fighting two people you might get kicked in the head. But if you are fighting two or more people it doesn't matter the martial art that you train, you are probably going to lose. Unless you are going up against drunks or women or children.

The techniques I've learned in BJJ aren't new but I'll say the emphasis on the guard game has improved a lot as well as just more newaza training partners who also focus on the guard. 2. You can make own Judo Contest rules - no one would oppose.
    3. Technically speaking BJJ - is Judo, or Judo - is BJJ, Brazilians just refuse to change name when Kano change it. And kano did it for marketing and commercial purpose not performance. Hi was good administrator and useless combat expert and coach.

In essence, these fights show nothing more than a clash between *Traditional Judo vs. Contemporary Judo.*
To those Judoka who will read this: the issue "BJJ vs Judo" does not exist! Why? BJJ practitioners do the same techniques as Judoka does! Case in point: *KOSEN/NANATEI JUDO*

+kigawman Yes there is heaps of crossover the more we research it the closer it seems, yet rules can also grow apart systems and shape their development. As the rules are growing apart the differences will become even greater. In Christchurch many of the jiujitsu guys were judo trained for years, so it looks similar. Now they have developed their game and are more diversified.

What I can say is that this business of crossover has come to a point that more people are now questioning the origins of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The problem with Judo nowadays is that the world still in 1925-mindset and Senseis trying to change their perception with newaza. I am lucky to be in a club where they now have Kosen Judo and not only IJF/contemporary Judo. This is what needs to happen so that the survival of the sport will flourish!

If you check NEWAWA1999 YT channel, it will actually show you some of the competition footage. Other than that, there is now a Kosen Judo movement working in North America.

Maeda travelled with another high rank Judo teacher (Fukuda I think, unsure just now) who was a stand-up specialist. In those days Tokyo was very pro stand-up and Kyoto very pro ground

bjj is judo, yet completely different, mainly in the set ups . judo plays heavily on strength and takedowns (most only effective in sport judo) . bjj concentrates heavily on technique and leverage and most importantly the ground aspect.
Bjj means the smaller man can still win whilst using technique . judo is so strength reliant almost always the larger man wins.
