Most newer CAD apps have tree navigation structures that can be used to control the visibility of individual objects and groups of objects. This paradigm is much simpler and more powerful than Revit's design option setup. Further, using an object tree approach it's easy to commingle high level massing elements with regions of more detailed modeling. Just use visibility settings to control the progression from massing study to detail in a single model.
