- In today’s video I’m joined by special guest Debbie Sanna-UA-camr, writer, and film lover-to discuss Christopher Nolan’s cinematic masterpieces and the watches they feature within their storylines. We delve into Nolan’s obsession with time, and how some watches become iconic and others don’t after playing an important role in movies such as Inception, Interstellar, Memento, and Dunkirk.
We also share our initial thoughts on the highly anticipated movie Tenet, and our expectations. So, join us for a fun chat where horology meets cinema, and don’t forget to add your nominations for future discussions on watches in films in the comments below.

Hit the like button when Hugo ate someone. It just felt like the right thing to do.
It’s always nice to see a content creator on this platform’s watch community branch out, and tie horology into other related communities within the broader cultural space. A great way to establish new connections. Nicely done, TGV.
TGV's critique about Dicaprio's Tag made me wonder if there's a potential for a video on miscast watches? An example of this is the Carl F. Burcher's diver watch being worn by Rambo in Rambo: The Last Blood. Rambo doesn't seem to be the type of character to be into Swiss luxury watches. Stallone yes, Rambo no.
He wore a Panerai in RAMBO too
True. The watch looks out of place on a down-to-earth recluse. I can't imagine Rambo shopping in a boutique.
True, but it that terrible movie got me into scubatec watches.
The only people that think the watch was miscast were people who spend too much time thinking about certain things. Millions of people wearing Tag and those just aware of the brand would not care at all.
@@bighands69 One does not have to "spend too much time thinking" when they are knowledgeable.
There is a certain joy in listening to a considered conversation , conducted by articulate considerate people. It is an uncommon talent to be able to share and encourage conversation.
A very nice video to watch. Great mix of conversation, movies, watches and Hugo intro (awesome!). This is a hit.
What a fantastic video, absolutely amazing. I'm a huge Nolan fan and rencently a watch lover so this may be the best 30 minutes video i have ever seen in UA-cam. Thank you for this TGV. Wish you all the best in future projects.
This was really cool, intriguing conversation. I honestly didn’t know what the point was for the first minute-i was kind of just scratching my head, but listening to it i understood and learned tons about film and watches and the marriage those two have when it’s all put together on the big screen. It came together really nice and fluid by two people just speaking their passions and just kind of intertwining the two in a interesting way. Cool and original
I was only going to quick browse this podcast but i ended watching everything.
Also, i'm waiting for my hamilton khaki field mechanical to come which is stuck at the customs at this moment.
Great podcast !
It's the only podcast I've really ever been able to sit through 100%...
TGV really has a good thing going!
Loves this collab. Would like to see more chats with Debbie. Movies and Watches are my two favorite things
Loved the level of depth to this episode and also you managed to blend both of your shows so that you two weren't overshadowing each other. One of the best shows, from a creative and layered perspective yet.
Thank you so much Christopher, I can't tell you how flattered and honored I am by your comment.
You have inspired me. Onwards & upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
Wow! A new half an hour vid by The Urban Gentry about two of my favorite topics, watches and movies! You spoil us, so closely before the weekend. Very nice collab with Debbie. I really enjoyed this one. Haven’t seen Nolan’s “Tenet” yet, so had to steer away from any info about this, undoubtfully, masterpiece. What a coincidence, checked out the Murph-watch earlier this week, since I’m thinking about a new addition to my humble collection. Have a great weekend, TGV. Best regards.
This episode is a classic...again, and I've said this before, thanks for bringing us such great content....for free!!!!
Suddenly my watch obsession has taken a back seat.
Lovely eh?
What an absolutely amazing video. Both of you sharing different perspectives with such finesse and knowledge in your respective fields. Interesting and informative in equal measures. Brilliant!!! Much love from India
"Liked" the video right away in a fit of panic! I figured out the riddle - We all travel forward in time but collectors have the ability to travel in the past.
This would have been the perfect segment for you to talk about Hamiltons Khaki BeLow used in Tenet. They've been blasting it's use all over the Internet.
As a Nolan and a watch fan, this is absolute gold!
Hugo is in the multiverse wondering who to go after next.
I watch this show only for Hugo.
Movies and watches, sensational!
Thanks great conversation and interwoven clips. As a movie fan and Nolan fan very informative. I liked the vintage Omega you wore. Have finally subscribed! Cheers.
OMG I just got out of the theatre for Tenet. I'd love to own a screen accurate watch from a Nolan film one day. Love you and your work!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy it.
Love you too! Onwards and upwards.
Best regards,
TGV
Never had a dull moment in this video. Information packed.
I love the video! Every video you make Tristano is pure class!
I can almost feel when that beautiful dopeness of an intro song! Cheers TGV be blessed always!
This video brings together my two favorite things: movies and watches
What an absolutely superb interview/discussion with two very talented people. Very entertaining.
So cool, I'd like to watch more of this kind of content! great balance of watch talk, pop culture, and everything in between. More!
Cool crossover episode! I’d be interested in seeing you two do another on how prop masters choose watches to complement character development. An extended history of Hamilton in cinema could also be cool.
I bought the "Cooper" Hamilton Khaki Automatic due to my deep love of Interstellar. Its a gorgeous piece and dear to my heart.
I bought the Murph for the same reason
Still going well?
@@youwebzyes, it is.
I've never clicked on a video faster, then liked it without it playing yet. 😂
Simple conversation between two highly intellectual people speaking on interesting topics they are deeply passionate about.
Love it!
A brilliant episode, three great movies you talk about, a lovely guest. Hugo in the intro! Thumbs up Tristano ;)
There is such a relaxed and knowledgable vibe about this conversation - more like this please :-)
You rock, thanks for working hard on these, I really enjoy them and they help me chill out
You are most welcome, so happy to hear that, enjoy!
Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
Interstellar is one of my favourite movies and definitely my favourite Nolan movie. Though Inception is right behind it. The use of watches is also great. I love the movies that ise time. Memento was a revelation to me, amazing!
Yes I was just thinking of how great this video would be ! thanks TGV ! Just saw tenet yesterday and before going into the cinema placed a deposit on the watch used in the film .
Good conversation there, I'm enjoying it so much. More of this, please. Not just watches in movies, of course, but a wider range of discussions related to horology. Thanks, TGV!
Thank you Waraney and duly noted, hopefully much more to come!
Best regards,
TGV
GREAT INTERVIEW KUDOS TGV😊 IM ALSO A FAN OF KURASAWA'S SEVEN SAMURAI.AFTER THAT MOVIE CAME MAGNIFICENT 7 WATCHED MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ACTOR YUL BRYNNER.
Looking forward to watching this after work tgv, thanks mate, think your channel is brilliant
I've always loved your intors mate, but this one takes the crown, 11/10! keep up the good work!
Arguably the best intros on UA-cam
So many interesting details that were discussed in this conversation I missed in the movies mentioned. I truly hope both TGV and Debbie will collaborate again now that Tenent has been released.
One of your best segments, very engaging! As others have said, the best content creators branch out and tie their core subject into the broader cultural space. Thank you.
I saw Tenet yesterday, it was excellent
No, it _really_ wasn't...you're just pretentious & desperately vying for status amongst your fellow movie pseudo-intellectuals.
GREAT VIDEO....Combining watches and movies....TOP NOTCH. Tarantino thinks Dunkirk is a Masterpiece and one of the best movies of the decade.
Omg, the music of interception "Time" the most inspiring, mhystic, and beautiful. Just as interstellar music. You can feel the "time" in it!
Agreed, the music is amazing!! You can feel the emotion from it.
Fun fact: Inception was actually inspired by the anime film Paprika. Nolan hasn’t actually cited it as a source of inspiration, but it was released in 2006 and the similarities are numerous. Some people accuse Inception of being a rip off, but I personally enjoy both films and I think they’re both distinct enough to be appreciated independently. Paprika is available for rent or purchase on prime video if anyone is interested in watching it.
Deffo going to add the to. my watch list, thank you!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry absolutely! I would also recommend perfect blue by satoshi kon (same director as paprika) which i just found out is available on vudu although I managed to find a physical copy. Would love to see a favorite movie list in a future video btw!
Satoshi Kon films are a must watch! Paprika wasn't the only film by Satoshi Kon to inspire Hollywood. Black Swan was rumored to be inspired by another movie of Satoshi Kon, Perfect Blue!
Kuro Shinko I love perfect blue, but I didn’t know that! Good to know, especially as a black swan fan as well
Paprika to westerners but Papurika to the asians. Paprika (Japanese: パプリカ, Hepburn: Papurika) is a 2006 Japanese science-fiction psychological thriller anime film co-written and directed by Satoshi Kon, based on Yasutaka Tsutsui 's 1993 novel of the same name, about a research psychologist who uses a device that permits therapists to help patients by entering their dreams.
The same thing happened to Citizen Watch company and how the name got wsternised: Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. (シチズン時計株式会社, Shichizun tokei Kabushiki-gaisha). The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch “CITIZEN” with the hope that the watch, a luxury item of those times, would become widely available to ordinary citizens and be sold throughout the world. He got this right. vintagecitizenwatches.com/tag/citizen-watch-history/
WOW! I already follow Debbie, what a surprise to see two of my favorite UA-cam in the same video!!
No bloody way. Just watched interstellar yesterday and had this very thought- the JLC in Batman, those iconic Hamiltons, etc. That’s a genuinely crazy and slightly shocking coincidence!!
Absolutely love this video. Totally new info for me. I find Debbie extremely interesting. Gave me a lot of movies I need to watch. Spread your wings TGV. As much as I love your watch videos, I love to see you go into different subjects even more. Onward and upward.SEIKO IS KING !!!
So glad to hear Ed, as for Seiko, haha, I could not agree with you more too.
Hail to the king!!! :D
Thank you and you will be glad to know, lot more collaborations on the way.
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry Great news TGV. Your positive attitude has been a positive effect on my life. You also got me in to watch collecting. 50 watches and 30 Seikos later. I’m disappointed you didn’t get to go to Japan and the Seiko headquarters this year. I just knew you were going to buy a grand Seiko over there. I am glad you and the Mrs. got out of NYC before things got crazy.God bless you brother.
Quality entertainment, as to be expected. Well done TGV.
Great video, I loved every minute of it (time reference). Movies and watches, what's not to like. :)
Liked after the first minute. My three children love Hugo.
Another masterpiece, especially the intro...bravo good sir!
The moment I saw DiCaprio in Inception wearing that watch I was like: "Wait, is this a commercial then?!?"
I absolutely adore the watches from Interstellar, particularly the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date.
In my minds-eye I recall it to be with a dark blue dial, but maybe that's just wishful thinking, cause I would like that even better. Only problem is Hamilton is so hard to get here in Indonesia for some reason...
What you said about the movie with different perspectives immediately reminded me of 2002 movie "Hero" directed by Zhang Yimou, (brought to the US in 2004 by Miramax after they were convinced by no other than Quentin Tarantino). This not a mere coincidence since Zhang happens to be a big fan of Akira Kurosawa which immediately becomes very apparent when looking at composition and camera movement. This story also has three perspectives: two opposing parties and the truth. I love how the director used different colour filters for the different story tellers and the truth, but most of all how it keeps its strength and beauty even when in black and white...
After hearing you praise Dunkirk I immediately got myself a copy which I will be enjoying later this week, cheers for that!
It´s a pity the video was too late for my bedtime when it was released. Christopher Nolan has become my favorite director and his depiction of time as a crucial element makes for astounding storylines. Thanks for the cool topic.
TGV, this was great! As a fellow film enthusiast myself, I truly appreciated this. I actually wrote a research paper a few years ago while in college on breaking down Memento and I spoke on the aspect of time and how it affects the psyche of the protagonist (won't mention the name for those that haven't seen the film [please do if you haven't.]) Thanks for this!
Btw, I love that Dunkirk has gotten the Tarantino seal of approval by calling it one the greatest films he's seen. ;)
Dunkirk is overrated. It is a good movie and I have seen it three times but it is not his best film by any account. To me it was a good 7 out of 10 movie and not as good as his other movies.
I think Tarantino might have overreacted because he is a filmmaker and he probably had an emotional response to it.
I would love to see Nolan make a western movie with a simple story and not a gritty dirty western either.
Good morning TGV! Great Video and a very unexpected collaboration, I have to say! I'm a little late to the party, but a great way to enjoy my morning coffee! Have a great friday!
Great discussion. Excellent content. Plenty of juicy details.
Ha ha ha Hugo vs Batman! Batman had no chance. I immediately liked this video so I don’t end up like guy who didn’t. 😂. Debbie was lovely guest. Thank you
Thank you Mr Clooney, once again you are a gent with your kind words.
Best regards,
TGV
Hugh Laurie wore a Khaki King in "House" I believe. It's a great brand. I never noticed the watches in the Nolan films until Interstellar. Cool video brother. 👌🏼
I love it when you bring in other UA-camrs!
Did not expect to see Debbie here, but am pleasantly surprised. She's a great youtuber, and it's no wonder you know\follow\like her.
Great video, excellent commentary from both of you
Epic intro with Hugo snacking on those who have no appreciation of TGV' s leading production, I wait to see Hugo go over to Australia for a big brunch. Thanks and keep safe TGV.
OMG Debbie is gorgeous.
Mate your openings are gold!!!
Omg! Hugo ate someone!
I am hitting the like button.
Hugo, please don't put me on your menu!
Great interview! I hope it is the first episode of a series. Keep going! Do you know something about what kind of whatch Sir Nolan uses to wear?
these intro videos are getting more and more intense and I am all here for it.
This was such a great video to watch. Please do more of these TGV!
Thank you Alex,
I deeply appreciate that.
Best regards,
TGV
Enjoyed the dialogue. Yet another great video!
Loved this content, has made me want to go back and rewatch Nolan films to better appreciate style (also do wristwatch checks on characters in his films) Thanks 🙏
I had no idea Zimmer was doing the soundtrack to Dune.
Been waiting for this movie for 5 years now. It's gonna be so good.
Having seen it twice in the theater now, it was pretty freaking good, absolutely one if the best theater experiences I've had in a while
@@UNSCPILOT
Yeah the theatre IMAX experience was amazing. The voice just hits different and so does the throat singing
How so many likes in 5 minutes? Oh. Oh....😱 I'm hitting the like button!!!!
*Inception* is a powerful thing, my friend... Where 5 minutes equals 5 years worth of likes...
🖒😎
I really enjoyed this. Dedicated Nolanite here but I noticed one mistake. Hamilton didn't make the Murph too big. It was a one to one replica of the original prop watch, bang on 42mm and a perfect fit for my eight inch wrist. I couldn't be more satisfied with it. Cheers 😁💕
Your cinema/movie videos are always my favourite
I like Nolan's movies, but the only one I love is The Prestige. Cracking film.
One of the best films that no one recognizes. Brilliant.
I’m from Malaysia and I’ve just watched Tenet...its the most confusing of Nolan’s movies if u over think it.
Anyway I’m still pinning for the Khaki Navy Belowzero, have been for a while now since I found out it was on The Martian too.
If you're a bona fide pretentious pseudo, you must pretend to understand Tenet.
Great format and interesting to see you bounce ideas off a guest, please consider doing more of these 👍
Thank you Adrian, you will be glad to know three are many more guest planned.
Best regards,
TGV
Just passing by to leave a comment! (And leave a like) Will watch tomorrow, for now I'm going to sleep.. Ciao!
Thank you, buona notte Edgar!
Best regards,
TGV
For some reason, I chucked when that guy got eaten by Hugo. Props to TGV for being an Akira Kurosawa fan! Rashomon is a must watch for any movie lover!
Nice "UA-camr Crossover" !
That was a great moment of the meeting of two "enthusiasm worlds" 👍
Love this interview TGV!!!! Would you consider looking at the history of the Swatch group, back in 1984 this brand got me falling in love with this amazing hobby we all love so much!!!!! Onwards and upwards 👍👍
Genius idea, I will deffo consider it.
Thank you my. friend, Swatch is so close to my heart too.
O&U!
Best regards,
TGV
Enjoyed the video. Out of the norm what I normally watch but really enjoyed it.
Finished heating my dinner and was wondering which watch video to eat to. Perfect timing.
Thank you and buon appetito!
Best regards,
TGV
I've been in love with the Orfina Porsche Design watches since they featured on the wrists of my heroes Bodie and Doyle in The Professionals way back in the late seventies/early eighties. Lots of cool watches featured throughout the run including IWC, Heuer, (other) Porsche Design and occasionally novelty watches like a Supeman watch(bought for Bodie after his new Heuer gets smashed whike dealing with some baddies). My watch obsession started at a young age lol.
Bit of glamour on TGV, now your channel has it all😂
Cracking content TGV! Very refreshing 👍.
Looking forward to the next one.
Regards,
Koen
I quickly go and like this videos after the intro lol.
I was waiting for Batman to throw Hugo against the wall and smash his head into the glass, but I suppose that wouldn’t fit this channels message and purpose. This was quite a unique video which is awesome about it. You need to get some more people onto the show, both for the social aspect and for the channels growth altogether. Until next time TGV.
Best regards,
Conner
What a great interview. Completely enjoyable
I totally need to see John Washington play a full blown version of Denzel in his big roles...yall may find the "honest trailer" for every C. Nolan film funny and interesting. Tgv awesome as usual..sick patterns on them cushions😊🤙
Awesome converstion. The first watch I bought is the "cooper watch" from interstellar and I did it based on your review. It must be the watch I wear the most. Then I bought the "spitfire" watch (Longines version) because I felt the same about the movie. Now I am approaching a dozen watches including the "murf". Thanks for your content
Once again, another brilliant intro.
20:44 a million applause for this point!
Great video guys...thank you 👍🏻
absolutely amazing video! I am a huge fan of Nolan's movies especially Inception and Interstellar.
there's actually a hint at the end of Inception. if you pay very close attention, You'll notice Dom's real totem isn't the spinning top. that spinning top belonged to his wife. His real totem is actually his engagement ring. He only wears that ring in the dream (you need to pay extremely close attention to see that) but in real life, he doesn't wear it.At the end of the movie, you can see he does not wear that ring.
Love these interview videos, just so interesting. 👌👌👌
Thank you Dario! More on the way.
Best regards,
TGV
Hahaha I can´t deny a like after the intro. This is a way to be asked to like a video without feeling ofended
My favourite movie by Nolan is The Dark Knight. Absolutely brilliant movie. One of the best of all time imo
Never been a movies kinda guy, but my two favorite films are inception and Interstellar. Guess I'm a Nolan guy :D
Loved the intro btw :D And Hugo, noted. I'll like the video
