Good discussion! We have a perimeter line on our paddle raft (Aire 143D), but do not have one on our gear boat (Aire 156R). It might not be good logic, but I feel like it makes sense; the gear boat and frame already have plenty of places to grab ahold of to get back in. The paddle raft has thwart straps ("love handles") and the perimeter line. We use 7/16" rope from the hardware store. We really like having places for paddlers to grab ahold to get back in.

Strap works has a double sided cam buckle that works great for tubular webbing. Easy to tighten both ends. No knots. It's called the " twocam".
