The best way Bethesda should have done pipe weapons would be to make the lower levels parts of each weapon very makeshift and homemade. Then by the time you fully upgrade your weapons that go from using makeshift parts to function, into weapons with prewar mil spec parts.

@@jacobtaucher8853 because it's not that easy...barrel rifling, chamber pressure, spring weights, all have very different conditions. there's pretty much no way that you could take random parts off of other weapons and slap them together and not have the weapon suffer a catastrophic malfunction. hence the pipe weapons, where if a section breaks it was milled from the start to be swappable. unless you mean take a bolt action rifle and exchange its parts for that of another bolt action of the same caliber and such. either way in a time where weapons manufacturing is essentially finished, at least for prewar weapons and for the majority of individuals surviving, what happens when you run out of swappable parts of weapons? you need to build something that can function and easily be replaced with current manufacturing means available

True... In WW II the British created the Sten gun, a submachine gun that any competent machinist with the right tools could make.. Perfect for partisan forces fighting the German occupation.. The OSS also had some crude handgun designs..
Crude blowback, bolt action weapons aren't impossible to make.. but these rust covered pipe guns in game just make my head hurt.. Even in a wasteland.. if your life depends on a functional weapon, then neglecting it so much it rusts through isn't smart..
In service, early 80's.. we had some training about improvised weapons, explosives mostly.. but I'd rather have a hand made oak bow with some nice arrows then some rusty piece of crap that probably will blow up in your face..

Gunnut here, I always felt that there was so much missed potential with the Pipe weapons.
A simple dive into expediently made firearms in history would have benefited the end result. But because weapons are so easy to just find on the ground and they don't degrade, the need for pipe weapons in Fallout 4 just disappear. It would have been cool to manufacture new but simple guns that were more reliable and/or easier to repair than prewar artifacts. And before people go on about rifling, look up the rifling methods used by S&W. You will notice electrochemical machining, a process that can be replicated in a garage setting with basic electric components and chemicals.

Do I take my hunting rifle and add 10 pounds, or do I craft a bolt action pipe rifle with a heavy damage receiver and save myself 3-5 pounds? Idk, it may not sound like much but at least then they'd have some utility. As is they aren't even good for scrap even with the perk.

I never was bothered by the pipe weapons. I was only bothered about the overabundance of it. Like, sometimes even raider bosses had pipe weapons. And the fact that they are just called pipe weapons instead of homemade, and the AKs of Nuka World were called hand made bothetered me greatly.
But the overabundance of the weapons is what bothered me. Because Bethesda relied on those weapons, and literally scrapped a lot of classic weapons of previous Fallouts. Like why is the Chinese Assault Rifle not in the game? Or the R91? Or the Service Rifle? Or the Carbine one? Etc. Many variety of wrapons from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and less than half had a comeback. Lets not mention the fact that also weapons from Fallout 1 and 2 could make a comeback. But no, they wanted us to just rely on "pipe weapons"
The overabundance is too much to the point it breaks the imersion lorewise because sometimes you are exploring a building that has been supposedly untouched since the war, and you find pipe weapons stashed in them Like wtf? Or maybe in a safe that no one has supposedly opened since before the war, and there is a pipe weapon in it as well. That shit is just beyond ridiculous.

The thing that really bothers me about pipe-weapons is that they are totally nonfunctional. Having made numerous DIY firearms IRL, even a few minutes of research could have shown Bethesda how to design something realistic. Everything for the Luty, to slamfire shotguns could be (and lore wise likely were) made both pre and post war with minimal expertise. If they really wanted to make something believable, open bolt full auto SMGs should have been the default; abysmal accuracy due to non-rifled barrels, constant jams, failures to feed... the works. hell, they could be underpowered as they are necessarily pistol caliber. For shotguns, VERY low reloading and minimal semiauto capabilities. Revolvers should have been the only high powered pipe weapons, owing to their mechanisms and breech design.
It could have been so easy to make something competent.

How they create this fantasy alternate timeline.. and the training, equipment decisions has always fascinated me.. The body armor we had was Vietnam era vintage, so just ballistic nylon flak vests.. 23 bs. so the power armor game addition?.. that would have been nice.. LOL.. : )
    Great video BTW....
and I am NO fan of the pipe guns in the vanilla version.. but I just downloaded a new mod that removes the rust.. so it's not so traumatizing to an old ground combat Airman.. Standard loadout was either the M-16 M-16/M-203 or the M-60..

They deal less damage then their unrusted counterparts while also really make sense and look authentic. Nice detail is that with a special crafted item, some anti rust solution, you can turn your rusted guns into full on unrusted variants, which can make for interesting gun progression.

This is one of the best "mod compilation" videos I've seen. You explain quickly but clearly the benefits of each mod, with just enough video to show it off without being excessive. Very nicely structured.
It's been a while since I played Fallout 4 regularly, but I still consider it one of my favourite games. I actually like how the developers focused on fewer weapons than previous games, but added greater customisation options.
I would personally not replace the pipe weapons or remove them from the game. I think they make a lot of sense. If anything, I would add a "bottom tier" of mods for the pre-war guns, in the shape of home made parts. Pipe gun style sights, stocks and magazines for the Combat Rifle, for example. I don't know if there are any mods like that for the game.

Pipe guns are _extraordinarily_ lore-friendly and should totally have been added back in the old Black Isle titles.
That said, Nina's Replacer really strikes a chord with me. I've been spoiled by the makeshift guns in the Metro 2033 series and the Junker Musket in Ashes 2063, and won't settle for anything less.

@@arx3516 the core problem is bethesda world building and lore disconnect for Fallout.
200+ years after the apocalypse and barely anything new sprang up?
Contrast that with even the first fallout game. Where there are already multiple large settlements in the *desert after 80 years* in the Mojave.
Come fallout 2, new cities have been built. *Clean cities made of concrete with organized city blocks.*
New Vegas is the "eastern frontier" of the west coast. Set a little before Fallout 4 and there are already new industries in California that make high quality mass produced goods like beef, chems, guns, and energy weapons.
Yet Fallout 4 is still stuck looking like the bombs just dropped 5-10 years ago. And pipe weapons are the "main form" of armament.

    • @DJWeapon8
      @DJWeapon8 3 роки тому +1

@Mr I’m hate myself it makes no sense from a lore and gunsmithing perspective.
Fallout 3 had no pipe weapons. All of the firearms in that game, apart from the hunting rifle which looks poorly maintained for some reason, are recreations of real world firearms.
Now all of a sudden there's tons of pipe weapons lying around being used by random wastelanders?
Then there's the gunsmithing aspect. This is a fault of bethesda that started in 3 and worsened further in 4.
Pipe weapons are deliberately made to look like shit and anyone with a modicum of knowledge of how firearms work would be disgustied by it. But bethesda put it in because mUh aPoCalYpSe, I guess... Keep in mind the game is a POST apocalypse game. The very LATE POST apocalypse as it is 200+ years after the nuclear holocaust.
When real improvised weapons are made to be sturdy and are ergonomic enough, given its available materials and lack of precision tooling. IE it doesn't look like shit and can actually function.
Long story short. Pipe weapons shouldn't be a thing because 3 had shown plenty of actual well made and manufactured firearms. Even more so if they want to take 1, 2, and New Vegas into the bethesda canon.

I like the concept of pipe weapon… _AFTER A FUCKING REDESIGN,_ the concept of an early stage in handmade guns fascinated me and…. The Germans literally have a pipe gun before, but for fallout, only if it was after the bombing a few 10-30-50 years ago. But besides that, it’s a no no for any of the fallout game since:
it is after 200 years and in Fallout 2, 280s years after the bombing. In Fallout 3, 320s years later. In New Vegas, 324s years later and in fallout 4, 330s years after the bombing
Oh hey look, Fallout 76… and it’s 100 years after the bombing
At that point, pipe weapons are no longer needed and are probably laughed at realistically as civilization has developed far enough to handcraft weaponsmith guns that is more in line with our quality of handcraft weaponsmith
Fallout 1? Maaaaaybe? Fallout 2? Iffy but… the smaller faction probably use it (I’m stretching the possibility alright?), Fallout 3? *CHILDRENS* have legitimate guns

Great video; you've become my new favorite mod reviewer! I already have been using the post-apocalyptic homemade weapons pack because it's one of the few replacers that doesn't change how the weapons work, nor only change the texture/color. I can't use the weapon replacers that imbalance the game by replacing the vanilla combat rifle with the M16 or the SR-556, because as awesome and nice as they look/sound they have lasers, killstreak options, canted scopes, heartbeat sensors, conversion to 80 new types of ammo, +300% damage option for no resource cost (which I could just not use but I don't like have to force myself not to win easier), and it just outshines all other weaponry to the point where you'd never pick up a random legendary and decide to use it. After exhaustively searching, I've found one 10mm replacer with just the looks changed but the hammer animations doesn't work, and one combat rifle replacer with only looks changed as well, that causes silent footsteps when equipped. I'm grateful for all the weapon mods and replacers out there, but I'm mostly happy with how the weapons work and just want an upgrade from Bethesda's bad visual implementation of creative ideas for weapons. The one thing about pipe weapons that kept me from using them more often when I first started playing was how for some reason they were inherently weaker than your combat rifle etc. And apparently I'm not alone in this as someone wrote a mod called "Pipe balance".
It strays from the idea that for some reason because the weapon has a smooth bore barrel that it has less power for some reason. Same power, accuracy may suffer a bit but same power

    • @solwindp78-1
      @solwindp78-1 3 роки тому +1

That last part is only true when firing a smoothbore projectile (a sphere) out of a smoothbore barrel. Firing a projectile designed for a rifled barrel (which is all of the ammo in Fallout 4) out of a smoothbore barrel will result in a significant loss in kinetic energy over distance, which would translate out to less damage on the target in addition to a loss of accuracy like you mentioned. Because the projectile is not stabilized by rifling, it would begin to tumble end over end (called 'keyholing'), and because of its conical, elongated, and rectangular shape (instead of a sphere which is typical of ammo designed for a smooth bore), this results in much greater surface area in the direction of movement, resulting in increased wind resistance and drag, as well as energy lost due to the counterproductive rotation.
In some cases, a keyholing projectile might do more damage at very close ranges - the bullet is guaranteed to tumble, and tumbling inside tissue can often cause a larger permanent wound cavity than a straight path - but it also means that the projectile loses much of its penetrative ability, because its no longer presenting the tip of the bullet to the target (pushing through) and now is essentially slapping the target with it's side. Kinda like an olympic dive versus a belly flop.
I'd argue that this would be more compelling if it was accurately represented ingame: the pipe weapons would have great damage up close that tapers off rapidly at distance, but it would also have difficulty penetrating armor at any range. This would make them great weapons to use against feral ghouls and Triggermen indoors at short range, but terrible outdoors at any real distance.
You can see a practical demonstration of these concepts if you look up the Military Arms Channel video on the Franklin Reformation, which is a smoothbore gun firing normal 5.56 ammo meant for rifled barrels. Up close, the ammunition does decent damage, but when fired at 100 yards distance, the projectiles have lost so much energy that they have difficulty even penetrating the skin of the rubber dummy target.
EDIT: Removed reference to .32 ammo, I got fallout 4 and 3 mixed up for some reason

The pipe weapons make sense in fallout 4 lore wise as well.
In fallout 1 it's explained that BoS doesn't like people having plasma or laser because it's dangerous.
So they produce new "pre-war" guns and ammo in their bunker and trade them for laser and plasma weapons so the average wastelander don't use them. (They also trade said weapons for caps, for food and water)
There isn't a brotherhood in Boston to make them, so pipe weapons circulate instead
    Side note:
I agree with top comments that customization quality/textures are boring (if you can make a new 10mm receiver, you can clean some rust and make some better looking parts) and they shouldn't appear in pre war locations like a locked safe in a military bunker!

For me, pipe weapons felt a lot better and more natural to use in Fallout 4 VR.
to the point i was choosing to use them over the higher tier guns because it just felt a lot better.

It really says something about the (lack of) quality of Fallout 4:s weapon design when there are so many mods out there that replaces them.

Are you using a mod that takes the ghoul leaping attack away? What it is called cause I need it.

I like the pipe weapon but I wished they break it makes no sense that I can shoot 200+ rounds and they work perfectly fine

My big preference would be flattening pipe autoloaders and pipe repeaters into the same weapon, so they can flatly use the same parts

I think the orange colour of pipe weapons suggests they are made from copper pipe stripped from homes. Neat idea except that type of pipe is really thin and would never hold up to the combustion necessary to propel a bullet. Iron or steel pipe (usually gray or black) would be much better suited which is what we see in that recolour mod.

The defense gun is literally a MP28 with a curved magazine like the Type 100 SMG that the imperial Japanese Army used in small numbers.

Is there a mod for Fallout 4 on Xbox that allows me to replace the metal, combat, synth, and robot armors? I already know about Modular Leather Armor, and there is Classic Combat Armor, but those aren’t full replacers.

Fallout laser muskets look like real life laser guns people have made DIY style so. I actually like them.
