  • I started gathering monarch eggs, shepherding them through to the farewell flight south, on July 20th, 2017. I’d broken my arm earlier that month, needing surgery and time to heal. My zero gravity chaise lounge chair, perfect backyard field-forest view, favorite nonfiction reading, and these tiny beings captured my imagination and heart while I was healing. In all, I successfully raised and released 25 butterflies.
You’ll view bits of this lovely animals life cycle in this 6 min. video; egg, larvae (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and the adult butterfly. There are four generations going through these four stages during one year. The last generation destined to make the long journey south.
Visit Monarch Watch biosurvey.ku.edu/monarch-watch or the Nature Conservancy website to learn more about why these animals are important, the challenges they face, and how you might help.
