I love how Ozai names Azula Fire Lord like a minute before making the title pointless. Shows how much he really cares.

I have a theory about why Ozai left her behind and named her FIrelord. When Zuko confronted him, he told Ozai that Azula lied to him about the Avatar being dead. And shifting the credit/blame to Zuko. Ozai no longer trusts her like he did. He, probably, fears that Azula is plotting for him to face the Avatar and Azula will turn on him so she can take the throne. This way, he doesn't have to watch his back against her, gives her a "prize", and keeps her under his thumb.

Similar how Yeltsin made himself President of Russia before disbanding the Soviet Union

Aang refusing to kill is deeper than his personal belief in pacifism. He’s the *last* airbender, if he breaks his vows as a monk, then the air nomads truly are gone forever. Ozai deserves to die, sure, but he *doesn’t* deserve the chance to truly wipe out the monks in this final, permanent way.

Not only is Aang battling the moral implications of killing Ozai, he also likely feels that killing would be him turning his back to his airbending culture. As the LAST airbender, it would feel like the symbolic death to his entire culture.

You can tell the group thoroughly trusts Zuko. When he first joined, Katara explicitly told him if he gave one reason for her to think that he might hurt Aang, she’d end him. Here, he does that, and then some, but she asks him why, and gives him a chance to explain because they all know he’s not who he used to be

The real reason Aang doesn't want to kill Ozai is because he's the LAST AIRBEND. As Airbender, he must prevail as peaceful.
"Ah, but the Avatar can't be selfish to that extent" and I agree, the problem is that Aang is LITERALLY the last living Nomad, and he wanted to preserve every possible aspect of what it is to be a nomad. That's why killing Ozai isn't just an obstacle for him, it's actually something impossible for him to do now. If he had other nomads alive, killing wouldn't be a problem with him being the Avatar. But when he is the Avatar and the last of his culture, he LITERALLY needs to be the pinnacle of what a nomad would be.
And that's exactly what he exclaims here 8:38, none of them actually understand because there is no other air nomad alive besides him to understand what he is saying.

Aang has a very different mindset and culture. For some, it is a no brainer that the world would be better off without Ozai and he needs to removed. But for Aang, he is being put into a position where he is the last of his kind and yet, for the sake of the world, he has to compromise of one of the biggest ideological practices of his people, a massive part of his soul. So, of course he's going to be apprehensive and look for other ways.

You need to keep in mind that core part of Aang's character is staying true to his morals. He draws strength from sticking to his morals even in situations that should break his will. This strong moral compass also causes conflict, and that's okay.
Aang is the last of his people. He knows killing the Fire Lord is the easiest and most practical solution. This is purely an internal conflict.
Aang is a vegetarian who has never had to hunt or butcher his food, nevermind look a grown man in the eye and crushing/burning/drowning him to death. He is not a warrior or from a militaristic culture like Sokka, Zuko, and Suki. Murder is a permanent punishment that cannot be undone, and killing people fucks with your mind. Aang does not want to be judge, jury, and executioner. The power he wields means that if he goes down a dark path, no one could stop him.

Even though the moon phases are really inconsistent, I don’t think a full moon would be available doing the comet (plus Katara has her own misgivings on using blood bending)

I feel like there could probably be equivalent rare astrological events involving the moon being at a heightened power like a blood moon or super moon that would strengthen waterbenders the way the comet strengthens firebenders but this doesn’t come up in the lore to my knowledge

8:14 did you not understand the show though? aang is different than any avatar before him, he's paving his own path sticking to his morals. maybe because it's a first watch it's not completly clear to you, but they've been laying this narative since book 1. in the fortune teller she tells him he can shape his own desitiny, in the swamp and guru episodes he learns everyone and every elements are the same in their core. the roku and sozin episode when the lesson he took is that everyone is capable of great good and evil, the ying and yang fish in the north pole. aang is very spiritual and has an understanding of the situation that is deeper than his friends have. he's completly right, the worst people are still people. if he doesn't have to take a life, he shouldn't, and there's no reason for him not to try and find a different solution

Aang talks big about being a pacifist, but he wasn't above killing that buzzard wasp in the desert in anger as it was fleeing. Maybe if he cared about the world as much as he cared about his bison, he wouldn't be so hesitant.
