  • "If you don't have an India play, you're not recognizing the realities of growth over the next 30 or 40 years on our planet."
U.S.-India Business Council President Ambassador Atul Keshap spotlights the shared values and democratic principles between India and the United States, emphasizing that India's rise to become the world's third largest economy will be a net benefit for the American people. The conversation also covers India's economic growth, the challenges of attracting foreign direct investment, the need for job creation, and the complexities of doing business in India. Additionally, the discussion touches on India's geopolitical relationships, including its border disputes with China, its involvement in the Quad alliance, and its pragmatic approach to foreign policy.

In fact, Modi is so democratic and tolerant, even when badly critized and called names by the opposition parties and many people, enjoying full freedom of expression. Let me give the Indian part of the story (narrative) on Russia relations.
    1. During the 1971 war with Pakistan ( and during the formation of Bangladesh), USA sent a fleet to the Bay of Bengal to support Pakistan's cause. Russia in the meanwhile sent their submarines to support India. The fact that the USA had planned to take coercive action against India, is a very sore thumb and will not likely be forgotten any time soon. Same with the Russian support.
    2. Russia (USSR) supported the Indian manufacturing sector and provided technologies for the same. There are two operational steel plants in India which work on Russian technology. The USA on the other hand ensured that such basic technologies were not supplied to India.
    3. The cardinal sin, however was the support of Pakistan, against Indian interests during the teenage years of India. The USA supported the Pakistan run by army generals over democratic India, obviously due to benefits that these generals were providing to the USA.
    4. In short, all this is a part of our Indian curriculum in our high school in India. While we don't hold grudges, against what happened during colonial India or early days of free India - it remains in the collective memory of Indians and it is obvious that people are sensitive to the history of the nation - we remind ourselves - " Never again". That is also the reason for non-alignment and looking out for your own country over all the "democratic niceties" & democratic alignment mouthed by such alliances.
This is an argument that collective memories of Indians hold in a benign sort of way. Good to have friends but be wary of everyone's interests, including yours. Do not take any such niceties to be a guarantee against inimical interests - Be pragmatic.

Atul explained India's side of the story so eloquently 👌 Problem with most Americans is that they either don't know or don't remember their own deeds or history. Even the geo political experts are focussed only on their narrative and ask questions like why is India with Russia or why is India with Iran. It's like asking why is America with Israel or with the Saudis. The historical baggage of 1971 is still vivid in the minds of most Indians when President Nixon and Secretary Kissinger sent the 7th fleet to the Bay of Bengal to prevent India from liberating East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Kissinger also tried to convince Communist China to open up a second front against India to make sure Pakistan was not defeated. And this is USA, the freedom loving global champion of democracy that supported the Pakistani military dictator Yahya in his genocide, rape and murder of millions of Bengalis; not mentioning how arms and ammunition was secretly sent on Pakistani freighters that had come to the ports of Philadelphia, NYC, and Boston. Since then numerous sanctions were put on India by successive administrations till the the mid 2000's when President Bush changed things.

Russia is an example of Indian loyalty to long term relationship. Save for NATO and US leadership, which benefited European security and prosperity after Second World War there is hardly any examples of long term loyalty in Western societies. Imagine how loyal India will be to western efforts, if they offer support to Indias rise like China from 1970 s to 2000. Drawing India into disputes of Europe and wish it compromise its national interest is futile. 50 Billion Air Force assets, 25 Billion infantry assets, 10 s of billion Naval assets will stand ineffective. Fertilizers from Russia, oil at discount, Atomic power stations are crucial to the future of Indian economy. And also important short term from inflation in food and crucial farm sector that employs 47 % of the population. These are NO NO with valid reasons. If China needs to be balanced India is the only sure option for the world. As time passes even more important to rest of the world. Just adding what is already known! As someone who is an Indian citizen working in America, I have my loyalties to both nations however, what's missing in this discussion is how American leadership has left its citizens clueless about their own mistakes viz a viz the US India relationship
1970s liberation of then East Pakistan as Bangladesh happened only when even after numerous attempts by Indian leadership and numerous telegrams by then us envoy in Bangladesh about the atrocities done by Pakistan fell on deaf years ( read up on blood telegrams named after the us envoy himself) Nixon infact sent in more arms to Pak to continue with the genocide and when India intervened, us sent it's 7th naval fleet to bay of Bengal as a threat and Nixon considered nuclear weapons, it was only cause of then USSR sending it's nuclear submarines to patrol in bay of Bengal that thwarted this attack, so clearly helping genocidal idiots in Bangladesh was a big mistake in which US, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, Jordan were all helping Pakistan with arms and ammunition. It's no wonder that such a stand by western powers in helping a military dictatorship like Pakistan caused India to lose trust against western powers.
Back in 1999 when Pakistan invaded Indian territory of Kargil and started an armed conflict under the guise of non state actors President Clinton instead of condemning the attack had helped Pakistan by turning off GPS guidance for Indian armed forces missile systems, eventually India won the conflict with arms and ammunition supplied by Israel and Russia, so the fault lines never even got a chance to heal.
It's only USSR and Russia that have continuously helped us by vetoing any offensive by the west in support of its all weather ally Pakistan on Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, it's only Russia that displays the correct map of India and no other nation does it so we don't have anything to hold against Russia.
As far as ukraine goes the amount of racism that Indian and African students faced by Ukraines armed forces while getting out at the start of rus Ukraine conflict was never covered by western media but only by regional media so whitewashing racism is something that shall never go down well by victims of colonization. Even when all such attacks were being conducted against Indians, the Indian gov never stopped sending humanitarian aid and in fact shall be the highest contributor of humanitarian aid to Ukraine

Indian government has prevented (somewhat successfully) its population from being exploited by companies from western economies. You have to understand we come from a recent colonial past with heavy exploitation memories, hence the delayed opening of the market to the world.

I agree with the commentators every view and can say he has a much better perspective than many other. I believe such podcasts should replace US mainstream media to reflect on the reality of the rest of the world instead of some sham cooked-up perspective by elite liberals (so called). Kudos to the host asking very clear questions (non-opineated) and for hosting such podcasts with learned guest speaker/commentator.

An understanding of Venuzulan oil supplied by Russian vessel solved all the 3 countries are benifited and Venuzuala has stoppef bullying Guyana which has 40% Indians who were taken there as Indentured labourers .Now guyana which has found oil , Indian are helping the country in its oil exploration . India has also agreed to build Urea plant in Venezuela and Guyana so that their agriculture grows because of the oil found . All a win win situation for every one to live in peace and happily. Similiar acts are being taken up in African Countries invluding establishing Medical Colleges /Medical hospitsls of high class where complicated surgery is performed

Modi needs to go and we need somone in India who is humble and whose heart beats for the poor and destitute of India.
Modi is pro-rich and sucks up to Ambanis, Adanis and wherever public glare is.
He was even seen talking to the cricket team that came back after winning a Cricket tournament!
He has not addressed major challenges: Police reforms, Judicial reforms, Education reforms.
Police in India is a concubine of the political class. We have seen how it is misused by a CM (his counterpart in USA is the Governor) of the largest Indians State (Province) viz U.P.
Police needs to be liberated from the clutches of the politicians and bureaucrats but who will bell the cat?
    Judiciary in India is crumbling.
It takes 7 years or more to go for a petitioner to a hearing!
Education in India and by that i mean quality education, is beyond the reach of most poor people, and lower middle class.
It is expensive and here again you have corruption everywhere in the form of huge donations that the schools (private) demand.

I do agree with some points you make.. But the rest of it is just BJP bashing which honestly I don't have a problem with either but unfortunately that makes some of your very good points seem biased. On the ground things are different everytime a party comes to power in India be it the Congress before 2014 police , judiciary etc have been used in undemocratic ways against the opposition and even the people with sane voices. About modi being pro adani and ambani..yes there is some truth to it but let me add Congress banned cars above 1000cc in India in the 90's only coz the company manufacturing 800 cc vehicles has a stake owned by the Gandhi family this is one example of many.. also what makes Rahul Gandhi a PM candidate I fail to understand he has no experience in governance not even at the level of a City Mayor so what makes him and his supporters feel entitled to feel that he is a good PM candidate , maybe it's too low for him considering his family history to start somewhere small isn't it . Compassion is fine, being humble is even better but those are all human values not necessarily that of a leader always.. So I think personally that Modi is doing a good job and people trust him which shows in the mandate which is the opposite for Raga.

India is still a very poor country. I, as a naturalized US citizen, relocated to India some years ago to lead a retired life. I find it a good place for retirement but there is a lot that is not right here. Infrastructure sucks. As a senior citizen, I cannot even walk on the roads of any major city without risking my life because there are no designated platforms for pedestrians. One has to compete with the traffic!
The place is overcrowded in big cities. Traffic is chaotic. There are no rules.
Police is corrupt. Almost every institution of govt is ripe with corruption. When my father passed away 6 months ago, I had to pay a bribe to get his body released from the mortuary!
I see a lot of homeless people everywhere in India.
    I see beggars everywhere.
So, does it matter to me if India becomes the 3rd largest economy?
    No, it does not.
It probably only goes to show that rich Indians like Ambanis, Adanis are getting richer while the poor are getting beaten up.
Those who are excited about it can take that piece of statistics and shove it where the moon never shines!

BJP being a hindu party in hindu majority India is great as Hindus ensures a secularism and a pluralistic society in contrast to a islamic nations where blasphemy laws , kafir hate and islamic jehad prevails ...n even a Christian states where conversion is rampantly practised n have moved from the barbaric crusaders times to the other extreme where islamic radicalisation is taking over their land n society n now right wings ideologies and red necks are becoming more prominent in USA n Europe . Hinduism which is one of the oldest religion- phylosphy believes in global citizenship n global village concept unlike the Abrahamic religions which believes in Nation state ideology .
