Egyptians used to burn Redheads because they believed that the color red was unlucky. Romans thought the Celts who had Red Hair made the best slaves because they made the best slaves. In the middle ages, because many British and Germanic cultures believed that Redheads had no souls, they believed that they would turn into Vampires (Including the Greeks) when killed, where witches, werewolves, or other damned creatures. This is why the Mermaids sometimes had Red Hair because Sirens were such creatures.

I have an uncle who looks very much like Carrot Top, and I was once advised to marry an Asian woman if I wanted a kid with a soul. It took until my third viewing of this episode to finally make the connection between that cryptic remark from years ago being a reference to this episode. As the comments have already said, the "gingers have no souls" concept was wholesale invented for this episode, to the annoyance of gingers everywhere.

Ginger people being soulless came a few hundred years before this episode. Daywalkers, though, in reference to redheads, came from this episode.

Devin knew what’s up, super fun time is a perfect episode. The “ginger kids have no souls” thing is an old school dog whistle for hating Jews thus the reason Kyle is the first person to go WTF. Also my wife is a day walker and she definitely needs an umbrella, she literally gets sun burns if she has holes in her jeans and we drive for 10 minutes

Interesting fact: Cartman's voice is literally just Stan's voice with "a lot more fat to it" as Trey says by voicing both of them. It was even referenced in the episode "A Very Crappy Christmas" where Stan filled in for Cartman to voice Cartman for their "Spirit of Christmas" video-card (inspired by the original short by Trey and Matt, well, original as in second one, "Jesus vs Santa", that is) when Cartman quit.

This stereotype is inherited from the English. Scots, Welsh, and Irish tended to have red hair so red hair was a sign of ‘foreignness’ not to mention that Ireland was treated as a colony by the British. That’s where many of the ginger stereotypes come from and why they’re predominantly in the anglosphere.

Interesting fact: The term 'ginger' for 'redhead' being coined has nothing do with the root vegetable similar to cinnamon, but actually it was named after a character who was a very beautiful movie star who was a redhead named Ginger Grant from Gillian's Island played by actress Tina Louise.

*Prejudice* (song) by *Tim Minchin* (worth a listening)
This is a song about prejudice
    And the language of prejudice
And the power of the language of prejudice
    It's called: Prejudice
    In our modern free-spoken society
There is a word that we still hold taboo
A word with a terrible history
Of being used to abuse, oppress and subdue
    Just six seemingly harmless letters
Arranged in a way that will form a word
With more power than the pieces of metal
That are forged to make swords
    A couple of G's, an R and an E, an I and an N
Just six little letters all jumbled together
Have caused damage that we may never mend
And it's important that we all respect
That if these people should happen to choose
To reclaim the word as their own
It doesn't mean the rest of you have a right to its use
    So never under estimate
    The power that language imparts
Sticks and stones may break your bones
    But words can break hearts
A couple of G's, jeez, unless you've had to live it
An R and an E, even I am careful with it
An I and an N, and in the end it will only offend
Don't want to have to spell it out again
    Yeah
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
So listen to me if you care for your health
You won't call me Ginger 'less you're ginger yourself yeah
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
When you are a ginger life is pretty hard
Years of ritual bullying in the school yard
Kids calling you Ranga and Fanta Pants
No invitation to the high school dance
But you get up and learn to hold your head up
You try to keep your cool and not get het up
But until the feeling of ill is truly let up
Then the word is ours and ours alone
    Don't you know that
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
So if you call us Ginge
    we just might come unhinged
If you don't have a fringe
    With at least a tinge
    Of the ginge in it
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
    Now listen to me
    We're not looking for sympathy
Just because we're sensitive to UV
    Just 'cause we're pathetically pale
We do alright with the females
Yeah I like to ask the ladies round for ginger beer
And soon they're running their fingers through my ginger beard
And dunking my ginger nuts into their ginger tea
And asking if they can call me Ginger
    And I say:
    "I don't think that's appropriate!"
'Cause only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
And all the ladies they agree it's a fact
Once you've gone ginge, you can't go back
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
Yeah go ginge, go you funky mother fuckin' ginge
Yeah, you can call us Bozo or Fire Truck
You can even call us Carrot Top of Blood Nut
Yeah, you can call us Match Stick or Tampon
But fucking with the G-word is just not on
    If you're a ginger-phobe and you don't like us
We will stand up to the fight if you want to fight us
But if you cut yourself you might catch gingivitis
So maybe you should shut your funky mouth
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
So if you call us Ginge
You can't whinge if you're injured
If you don't have a tinge
    Of the ginge
    In your minge
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
And you know my kids will always be clothed and fed
'Cause Papa's gonna be bringing home the gingerbread
And they'll be pretty smart because they'll be well-read
And by "read" I mean "read" and the other kind of "red"
    It's a homophone
Only a ginger can call another ginger Ginger
Only a ginga can call another ginga Ginga
Just like only a ninja can sneak up on another ninja
    Yeah, only a ginger
    Only a ginger
    Only a ginger, yeah
    Are you listening-er?
    I'm not pointing the finger
    I'm just having a sing-er
    I'm just remindin' yer
That only a ginger can call another ginger, ginger

    "she feed his delusions"
canonically she and Kyle (and Mel Gibson) are the main cause..
in older episodes, back when Cartman was less Cartman-y, he used to cite his mom as the source for things he said.. "my mom said" this and "my mom said" that..
