    Hi Lily, for me defluencing does not necessarely means bashing a product but rather giving reminders that we do not need a make up collection, hellofresh boxes for every night single meals nor new clothes everyday season. I watch those general reminder videos and find them very helpful.

    Some youtubers, including many who have made videos for a very long time, are just as guilty as the tik tock generation, when it comes to aggressively pushing all kinds of products (and even cosmetic procedures, which is really worrying). The difference is that their sales pitch appears 'softer' and more 'friendly' because you've followed them for years.

    Who says you have to have all social media apps? I’ve deleted Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat and I’ve made the conscious choice to not go on TikTok. The only platform I have and interact with is UA-cam and I’ve curated my feed very carefully. People, use your common sense!

      I deleted TikTok today as it’s just taking too much time from me even though I have time limits, I know I should be able to control myself but… I just need to get a hard cut and might return to it later, but I heard today while in Pharmacy a daughter asking her mom did she hear the latest drama on TikTok and she then explained it to her, it’s so weird to me that one person who is 25 and is “famous” for 2 years can make so much history from a “small thing”.
      I agree that we don’t build relationships on TikTok, that’s why I will love UA-cam and I hope that it will never go away from the people I follow

    Long time watcher 1st time commenter. 🙃 I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the industry. I remember that video you did where you diagramed out the relationships between you brand's, agents, viewers etc which I also loved. I am on a no buy year and it meant I unfollowed a huge amount of 'influencers' who I loved but they would totally trigger me to want stuff. But I can't control that on TT and I just find the feeling of wanting itself can just feel exhausting. Even if you don't buy! Anyway really enjoying your vlogs, I can feel you are enjoying them too. :)

    On the de-influencing thought train.. It´s not necessarily de-influencing but it relates to marketing all the same and it kind of falls into why I find the Skin + Me marketing not genuine because you and literally all the British influencers of your generation hammer on about this brand, that the blatant marketing strategy behind it falls into the category of insincere

    I think the deinfluencing trend is interesting, as an older viewer who has grown up watching yours and others content I think we are naturally more aware and less likely to be influenced, as what a 22 year old is recommending is just not going to appeal to me when I didn’t really ask for it. I feel like this is why lots of us in our 30s don’t really get on with TikTok in the same way. I use it but not the for you tab just following so then I get content I actually want

    Your love for UA-cam really comes through in your vlogs recently, I have been enjoying them even more than usual! Thanks for taking us along 🥰
    My thought on influencing: I‘m really turned off by content creators who are advertising (not just featuring) different (and random) products in almost every post. It makes the content creator and the products much less appealing to me and makes me value the opinion of the ones I have followed for years and trust even more. And I find, as I‘ve grown older, I asked myself the questions you mentioned intuitively, when a product is featured product. I‘ve probably learned the hard way 🙈

    Thanks for the interesting points! I do agree that the youtube content is different cause I trust who I watch. When you said "just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for you" I thought a product could work for you and not for me, yet you would talk about it and even advertise it. I wonder what part of it is influenced by your relationship to the brands e.g. not wanting to criticise a product from a brand you usually like or have worked with. Anyway, thanks for always trying to be transparent, that's also why I watch :) maybe all we need is to buy less lol

    I’d really like you to talk about your views on sustainability / be more transparent about how you keep your business sustainable, as it is such a core set of credentials that people now look for in ‘influencers’. Have you given any thought to saying ‘no’ to PR products you’re sent which you know you won’t use, or returning them to brands so they can be re sold? Would be very interested to hear your thoughts.

    • @naomiramage4950
      @naomiramage4950 Рік тому

      Are you also aware that when people send products back to many clothing / cosmetic companies as ‘returns’, they are simply thrown into landfill rather than re marketed?

    • @lilypebbles
      @lilypebbles  Рік тому +3

      PR samples can’t be re sold as they’re separate products designated for PR purposes. They actually say “can’t be resold” on them. But I absolutely make it clear to PRs who I have contact with to email me first to ask about sending product and I only say yes if it’s relevant. I also ask for minimal Jiffy bag packaging as I don’t need over the top packaging.

    I remember the time where a UA-camr would have an actual niche and knowledge about the items they were talking about. Actually comparing products so you could decide for yourself if it would work for you. The whole influencing thing felt more honest and informing than it does nowadays. I think both influencing and de influencing by just saying why you like or don’t like it is not the way to go. If an influencer can’t give technical and practical information, pros and cons, on a product for a viewer to apply to themselves, they shouldn’t continue influencing, I think.

    I think the thing about de influencing to remember (because I do think it’s primarily triggered from tiktok) is it’s not actually targeted at people who’s only full time job is “influencing” because you can be a normal person who talks about a product you like from mascara to like a kitchen gadget and hit the algorithm right and get 2 million views and then the product goes viral. So it’s more about saying hey just because there are now 500 review videos in your feed that you’ve been served saying it works it might not for you, cause until this trend the examples of it not working wouldnt hit the algorithm. Just a thought I had as someone who is NOT an influencer but works in the beauty industry!

    Some companies in the UK do accept makeup back but maybe keep this quite. I remember falling for these two Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks everyone was talking about maybe 6-7 years ago and I looked at so many swatches and watched different videos and when they came they looked nothing like that on me. So I sent them back and they refunded me! So maybe more accept them than others. I’m glad I’m not on TikTok, sounds like it will make me want more than the you tube videos always did, which was more than I ever needed. I watched a video a year or so ago from Chloe (OZ) and she was saying how we don’t need much makeup to protect the planet and all that stuff when it was her over the years that influenced me to have a makeup collection sized like a makeup artist! 😂

    The comment you made about following content creators you trust is part of the reason I'm not a fan of Tik Tok. The videos are so short and highly edited/curated IMO that I don't feel like you get much of a feel for who the person is and whether you can trust them. The nature of that platform is also that it tends to push you to strangers content.

    The best de-influencing content I have seen (which I think was actually tik toks reused as UA-cam stories) were of a women using it as a way to slowly hone in on what she already had. Unfortunately I don’t recall the creator’s name because it was served to me and not someone I follow. But I believe it was a series (potentially daily in January) wherein she tackled a small part of her home and declutwrwd, tidied or reorganized it so it highlighted what she already had and loved, which I think is much more sustainable in terms of fighting consumerism which in my mind would be the truer opposite of ‘influencing’ rather than talking people out of getting more for reasons that may not apply to everyone (like the discounting products video!). But rather then giving your personal reasons for not liking a product, because let’s be real there are very few actually shit products around, and each product just fits different needs and expectations-so one person’s deinfluencing opinion on a specific product might actually sell someone on a product (like if a foundation is too high coverage for the reviewer, but the viewer/consumers was looking for high coverage-same with makeup finishes, or colour preferences.) whereas most people own things because at one point (and especially after over 10 years with UA-cam/social media influencers existing) many people have already bought products on recommendation but simply forgot about them or are seeking novelty-and sometimes a declutter r reorganization can rekindle a love for what one already owns

    Also you raise an interesting point about the influencing aspect of what folks like yourself do. It’s all about trust. Do I trust your judgement? Do I find you generally negative or positive in your videos? Do you come across as balanced? Personally I’d rather not be exposed to negative stuff - there’s enough already in the world to be negative about - but I like to have a genuine opinion. I believe we get that from you.
