SAYING GOODBYE. - Ep. 24 (Sailing Salty Mermaid)

  • This was a hard video to edit and film. It was very sad for us to go back and say goodbye to not only our sailboat, but our home that was destroyed. We rented a van and drove it back to Arizona with all of our belongings from the boat. We are excited about the new adventure ahead, and can't wait until we save up enough to purchase a new boat again!

    Hey guys, we have a saying in GB; 'nothing worth having ever comes easy'. So, hold onto your dreams, stay determined and when you get your new boat (you must!) the new adventure will be so much sweeter! I hope you do, as I aim to be there watching and who knows we may meet up when we start our trip in a year. Good luck!

    You two are the BALM!!! You are still young enough for time to heal this wound for sure. I look forward to watching you guys plow thru this to your new(to you) boat that will probably be an upgrade, as you now have some experience and know some stuff you want on your next one and stuff you don't. You can't control the wind but you can adjust the sails.

    I sure hope they are going after the hired captain for negligence. There should have been a report filed with the coast guard for striking a bridge. The coast guard should be investigating the situation and disciplining the captain if they find fault on his ability.

    You don't want to hear about how lucky you are, but I'm
    gonna tell 'ya. Most Europeans would kill to enjoy the lifestyle you have just demonstrated.
    The flying, the boats, the vast van, the open highways, the boat, beautiful
    Florida, a marvellous drive through the South to get to sunny Arizona. In
    gloomy Europe young people like you would have to be so rich to do what you
    have done. Now you are going to have a
    period of consolidation, but in Arizona! Try that in Liege or Birmingham or
    some dump. So cheer up, everything is going to be fine and keep making videos.

    speaking of life lesions, my parents over their nautical carrier lost two boats to hurricanes. one was insured one was not, other mariners at the time that were insured found that in many cases it took a year to get paid off. many in the island disasters were not made whole and did not recover, only to end there cruising. to be able to walk away and come home is a gift in itself. being on the water presents a high risk, a tiny little speck in a massive element with nature and all of its unknowns lurking about. many folks are clueless about the sea, i am sure you two are not. you have gained lesions that i do not even have, thanks for sharing with us all. tremendous experience

    The reality is that this does happen on a rare occasion, but we never see this side of it. Thank you for sharing this chapter with us. For those of us who have not made it to salt water yet, it's a good reality check: I want to make sure I'm fully ready, with back up plans in place; and a reminder that insurance never covers everything and you (I) need to have finances in reserve. If I jump the gun I could really hose myself financially…

    • @BruceInFlorida
      @BruceInFlorida 7 років тому

      Personally, I think Niki and Austin are in a position to provide many individual vlogs, teaching us what to expect and what not to do concerning insurance and post-accident management. We have soooooooo many blue water sailors posting weekly vlogs, but Niki and Austin are very unique in that they have the experience in dealing with a lesser heard aspect of blue water boat ownership. I think they have a unique opportunity TO TEACH US BASED ON WHAT THEY LEARNED, and I hope that MANY of the subs encourage them to produce step by step vlogs, starting from purchasing insurance ( and what coverages they bought and what coverages they might have skipped ) and then what steps they took POST ACCIDENT. Austin and Niki are in a unique position to teach many of us on HOW TO MITIGATE our losses should we ever face an accident of our own. LETS PLEASE HELP SUPPORT THEM BY BECOMING A MEMBER OF THEIR PATREON ACCOUNT !!!

  • @marcogil4970
    @marcogil4970 7 років тому +1

    Pay no attention to negative opinions… Thanks God nobody was hurt, or worst. Forget about suing anyone. Forget about negativity…. Accidents happens…We lost a loved boat in hurricane Georges and we get something from the insurance, not everything, but immediately went for the newer one…ah! …and it was much, much better. If you get something from your insurance be joyful, and keep going. We enjoy tremendously your posts when researching your boat, “your” ideal boat. You are a refreshing couple and lets us recreate our past. Now we are “senior citizen” with several years as coastal and passage cruising in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (40+ years). Our advice: keep your original wish list: seaworthy, gen, AC, etc., etc. (maybe a center cockpit that seems to be Nicky’s liking) Who say that you should go to smaller boat? NO, No, go to bigger boats. More safe, and easier on passages. Who say that bigger boats are difficult to sail and handle? Sailboats have something call “winches”, don’t they? My wife feel better in our present 42 Beneteau than in our previous 35. Much smoother handling in heavy seas. Finally, our main concern would be Auto Pilots….A tough, modern AutoPilot should be high in your wish list. Please take care…

So sad to have to let your boat go... but there is a saying that goes like this: "Whatever belongs to you by right of conscience, can and will never be taken from you, whether stolen, lost or destroyed. Salty Mermaid may be finished, but there is another boat lying ahead for you. In such little time you have shown such lovew for the boat, that you haver the energy and will to get the one that is destined for you. Nothing is incapable of being repaired, but who knows... Boy did I ever pick the wrong time to start to follow a new you tube channel. I unfortunatly can relate as my first boat was totalled due to mother nature and a broken mooring chain.
    Question: Why didn't you take the valuable items like the barometer I saw on the wall or the radio/nav gear? there is always a market for used but good items. Insurance tell you what you could take?
    Keep the dream alive, eh.

    • @BruceInFlorida
      @BruceInFlorida 7 років тому

      In most cases, the insurance only allows you to remove those items that YOU ADDED and INSTALLED to the vessel AFTER you made the purchase. This vessel had a lot of communication gear that was OLD and was on the list that Niki and Austin was seeking to REPLACE asap. If you noticed, they did remove the 406 EPIRB since that was something that they purchased and added to the boat after they purchased it.

    If the insurance company are aware you are going public with your experience dealing with the insurance company and they are aware of the exposure they are going to get, I would think they would make an effort to look after you. Yes? No? A video on insurance recommendations, what to look out for when shopping for insurance, worldwide or just national insurance, what to look for in the policy, I know some don't cover you if it's a named cyclone tornado etc. What to expect when you claim, etc etc. This would be a beneficial video to anyone who is looking at getting a boat and I would think anyone that watches SV Delos or Sailing La Vagabonde would watch this episode. Make sure you make the Q&A really clear so it's clear for anyone to understand ;)

    • @geraldthomas9253
      @geraldthomas9253 7 років тому

      This along with how to check a captains credentials, insurance and bonding. They can leverage their experience, along with their viewership to persuade the insurance company to provide them with a more favorable settlement. Although I doubt they will, they seem young and naive. Although, the Sailing La Vagabond crew is also young and was still savvy enough to leverage a fair deal for a new Catamaran.
      I'm a contractor and am well aware of the cost of repairing things. There are times when it is not only less expensive to replace something, but not replacing it constitutes a serious safety hazard. I saw the video of the wreck. That boat is beyond repair and any attempts to repair the structure will only force the damage in other portions, that don't have visible damage, to surface with potentially fatal consequences, and unquestionably at the worst possible moment. This is one of the characteristics of fiberglass, or any laminate. There are no visible signs of wear until catastrophic failure. These failures are more likely to occur when the vessel is experiencing extreme stresses, i.e. in a strong storm, than when it is sailing on a calm day because the storm will increase the stress on the vessel. Who wants to play that game?
      The engine and sail drive are the most easily salvageable, with the sails coming in second. The hull and mast are a complete loss as well as the standing rigging. The rigging is much less valuable, but easily salvageable as well as most of the electronics and batteries, although the only thing with a strong secondhand market is the engine and sail-drive.
      Regarding the captain, if they hired one with license, insurance and bond, they have a strong case that has actual results. If they hired one without his license, which is a common mistake of most people looking to save a buck, they have a strong case that has no benefit to them. There is no point in throwing good money after bad, and plenty of reasons to avoid the conflict altogether. It can only serve to increase and prolong the event and there's no possibility of any compensation. It's not possible to squeeze blood from a turnip. It's also not possible to prevent him from doing this exact same thing in the future, as he will simply return to the prey that he's fed off before, and frankly, that he was willing to risk their boat to argue with an operator, makes me more likely to believe that he is simply an imbecile, preying on the uninformed. I can't see a professional risking his means of supporting himself to ram a bridge. He would immediately loose his bond and need to repay it before he would be allowed to work again. The captains immediate response of "I'll pay to repair it" is synonymous with the predatory species, the licensed professional would be more likely to immediately call his insurance agent, not only will he have access to better lawyers than he can afford, but he is paying him for just such an event. There is no point in attempting to pay this out of pocket when he already has.

    One option that you might consider...is buying a very small, cheap $10k boat in Florida and just exploring the Bahamas. You can probably sell it for almost as much when you get back. I think you'd be amazed at how little you actually do need. You really don't need a generator/watermaker/50' boat to enjoy the tropics and spend great quality time with each other.

    Saw Sundowner was up for sale now too. Westsail 32... They did a lot of work apparently too and might be an option for you if still considering sailing.
    “To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea… ‘cruising’ it is called. Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about.” -Sterling Hayden

    I watched the video where you had hired a captain to handle the boat. Since he caused the accident, was he not insured or bonded? I hope you are able to find another boat and continue your adventure.

      Was he hired, or just along as a friend to assist them on their first trip? Was their a written contractural agreement signed, that spelled out his obligations or was there a word of mouth agreement? Was he aboard simply to assist in return for being provided food and berth? Each of these situations could present differing levels of Captain Obligations. Perhaps Austin might clarify what occurred during this trip and explain to us what we should be aware of when "hiring" a Captain to be in SOLE CARE AND CUSTODY OF OUR VESSEL.
      === if you remember, their "friend" Captain Jim went out with them during their first weekend on the water, to assist them in handling their boat for the first time. Does someone aboard "as a friend" have liability for acts and/or ommissions ?

      Bruce Malo anyone with seniority on a vessel, at the helm or not, holds responsibility for that vessel. The video actually shows the "captain" at the helm at the time of the incident which places him firmly in a position of liability.

      They've been very unclear on this point so far. That, and no mention of suing the captain, leads me to believe it was either a friend or an un-licensed captain, with no contract involved. It would be interesting to hear the whole story, and maybe that will come out in the insurance video. Actually, I'd be surprised if the insurance company didn't go after the "captain" if at all possible.

      Thank you for the info. I hope you find a satisfactory resolution and look forward to your insurance video. I, too, need to buy insurance for my sailboat and believe in learning from other's experience.

      Perhaps Austin will share the post accident damages as reported by his original Surveyor, and the Insurance Adjustor. This might be enlightning to other boaters.

    Hopefully not TO long before you find your next boat! Motor yacht maybe? I've heard re-rigging alone on a sailboat is more expensive that fuel to sail around the world!

    This advice is too late, but when I had to unload and drop things 10+ feet, I just dropped all the blankets and mats and sails and soft stuff first - then dropped everything else on top except for really big delicate items which were let down with a rope.

    The boat is only an insurance write off, I have fixed up boats with far more damage than yours, someone will purchase the salty mermaid for a bargain price and will fix it up. good luck in whatever you do, we will be watching.

    Sorry about what happened to your boat. If you go the RV route, I don't think I'll be following you. Nothing personal, just not an RV guy. Good luck in what ever direction you go.

    and thus we turn the page, and begin a new chapter in the Life of the Salty Mermaid. Any thoughts of joining up as crew on another blue water sailboat? Might be an awesome opportunity to gain sailing experience, while deciding on a new Mermaid Two...

    Well. Time to regroup. Time for crewing on other peoples boats, and maybe when you have had time to sort yourselves and you resources out, look at a smaller boat, which would have some advantages anyway.

    a lot of folks jumping into cruising boat after a few ASA classes. It could work however a season or two on a 22ft is a good prerequisite. I followed advise and went that route. Shakes out a lot of "O SHITE" moments on a boat you can buy for $1000 and sell for $1000

    get a smaller boat and learn to sail in the lakes in your area, then become your own captain.

    • @owenhalloran6234

      They did that.. They live in Arizona and the lakes we have out here aren't that big , but that is exactly what they did. Sailing on a small lake is nothing like sailing on the ocean. That's why they hired a good for nothing captain to log some miles with them and show them the ropes. The captain was not much of a captain and he is at fault for damaging their boat. They did everything right with the exception of picking the wrong captain.

      hi *owen*,
      you seem to be familiar with these guys but I just stumbled upon them. I posted this elsewhere but maybe you can answer it.
      WHAT ABOUT THE CAPTAIN WHO CRASHED YOUR BOAT?
      DOESN'T HE HAVE THE BURDEN OF LIABILITY?
      DOESN'T A CAPTAIN, WHO YOU ARE PAYING TO PROFESSIONALLY DRIVE YOUR BOAT, HAVE TO HAVE INSURANCE TO COVER HIS ERROR IN CAUSING THE ACCIDENT OR SOME LIABILITY INSURANCE OF SOME KIND?
      HOW ABOUT SOME TYPE OF CAPTAINS "GAP" INSURANCE WHICH WOULD COVER OVER AND ABOVE WHAT YOUR INSURNACE DID NOT COVER?
      IT SEEMS ODD THAT THIS GUY CRASHES YOUR BOAT, YOU ARE LEFT WITH A TOTALED BOAT AND HE SEEMS TO HAVE DISAPPEARED.
      I THINK IF HE DOES NOT HAVE INSURANCE THEN A PERSONAL LAWSUIT AGAINST THAT CAPTAIN IS IN ORDER BECAUSE FROM NOW ON YOUR RATES ARE GOING TO BE HIGHER BECAUSE OF HIS ABSOLUTE AND COMPLETE *MALPRACTICE AND WRECKLESSNESS*..
      .
