    I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily better, just because the modulation is a bit cumbersome compared to the drag and drop workflow, but as far as features and power it’s a must have for portable sound design for me

    Thanks for the nice video! If you want to assign modulation quickly you can do that from the long press menu. So just long press to some knob and select the modulation source from the list. ButterSynth v.1.01 has just been released with iPhone support and lots of bugs has been fixed including the bug you found where you couldn't load wavetable to FM osc.

    You don’t have to do everything from the Matrix when setting up modulation. Just long-press on a controller to bring up the quick assign menu. This is something you’re going to have to get used to on iOS. A lot of devs put features under long-press commands
    In a lot of apps.
    .
    The LFO’s unfortunately does not have free sync (not sure why Arto didn’t put it in there). However you could use the Curve Envelopes as LFO’s. Just load or draw whatever wave you want. Then set it to [Free run].
    .
    The Key zone editor allows you to set up key zones for Oscillators individually. You could have FM only triggering when you play C1-C3, Wavetable 1 triggering between C3-C4 etc.

      @@AlckemyYeah It can be a bit tricky getting the commands right. Remember having a bit of an issue with the long-press time. I’ve got ADHD and so I’m extremely impatient. Missed a lot of things because of it. But I also didn’t think this menu existed in the beginning. 😅

    “phase” knob adds randomness to phase start of every unison voice .. if you turn phase to 0 then detune sounds weird cause all unison voices start with same phase, perfectly synced - so it sounds a bit like flamger… try turn phase to MAX (then every unison voice starts with completely different phase)
    FMX is almost 1:1 emulation of famous Nord Lead 1/2 oscillators FM modulation ;-)

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  Рік тому

      You actually want zero random phase because it gives you consistent pulsing when two waveforms are detuned for bass:) every synth sounds different when detuned, this one is no different. Cool tip about the fmx tho!

      The way I wish things were is basically, companies would release quite a nice MIDI controller or like, 3 levels of MIDI controllers from hobby to professional, and then have a large and continually updated suite of software instruments that were automapped to that specific controller. I mean, Arturia's Analog Lab is a bit like this, but I'm more imagining third-party developers and random people being able to cook up like a full custom firmware and have it work out of the box with the controller.

    Okay-- hear me out-- I'm not trying to be a hater at all, but I never really understood why being able to make your own wavetables was such a big deal / desirable. What am I missing here? Is it "just" about being able to make shit that is 100% custom and yours, or are there other reasons that I don't get?
    I have seen some sound design tutorials for Serum & Vital where the fundamental is removed or tweaked for sound design purposes (ie, having a solid sub w/ wide low mids, I think). So that makes sense. And importing already made wavetables also makes sense. But this kind of freestyling your whole wavetable by randomly drawing in squiggles thing that is so in vogue with some producers, I'm not sure I get it yet. Seems like extra steps for no clear gain that I can see over using already made tables
    Again, not trying to be a dick here, I really like your channel and videos and respect your skills and grind. I guess I'm hoping that you can help me understand the purpose behind this tutorial.
    For context: I've recently gotten an iPad and am using it more as a sound module over doing everthing on my laptop DAW. I'm loving the workflow and the amazing apps for iOS. And I already have Buttersynth, and have been eyeing other wavetable synths in hopes of finding "the one" for me on iOS (butter is a little not what I'm after both sonically and interface wise). So I'm _right_ there with the whole premise of making nasty basses in iOS, but hoping maybe you can clarify this point.

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  Рік тому

      wavetables offer a starting point to jump into the subtractive aspect of sound design. if you have a waveform where you can control the harmonics, it means you don’t have to wave shape it little by little just to get a thick sound…. to THEN start processing.
      if your table has a lot of motion in it as well, then it’s a big head start for creating interesting and evolving basses. it’s not required, but I love that I can make tables on the iPad and then send them into phase plant later. divi-ing up tasks to where I’m not always at the computer (is this is what I do for work) is very refreshing.
