I just watched this last night. I’m familiar with Rodney Alcala as a serial killer because I’m into true crime. But… I was born in the early 70’s. This film, for me, illustrates the sexism and dismissive behavior surrounding women violence. It was gaslighted and questioned and dismissed and disbelieved. Anything women said was dismissed. Mannnnn it brought me back to those times in the worst way.
I got the impression that the janitor was alright. And, it was male police officers who took him down in the end, so, every man wasn’t awful. That said, I audibly said the word “bear” when he was following her to her car. Anna probably took in all of the criticism of Dahmer and other movies about serial killers and decided to focus on the victims. The trial stuff would have been sensational and I think it was in fact different that she left that out. That’s chum for most movie makers who wouldn’t leave that out. He was a clown and putting those scenes where he’s making a different voice as he represented himself would have taken us out of the seriousness of the topic. You’re not a woman, but I thought she was doing something of a PSA. He’s dead and the victims are already gone, but she honored them by using this story to potentially help the living. I’m not man bashing when I say that some of us can miss latent anger and other maladaptive tendencies in men because they’re handsome or charming. I liked her showing that she noticed it at dinner, didn’t second guess herself and boldly told the truth about not wanting to see him again. Too many times we are so worried about being polite that we won’t be stern with a creep. I’m glad we had this rare vantage point.
Amazing points all the way around. Thanks for your comment! I agree with you as well that it's totally possible all of that was intentional to make this more about the victims. It's honorable, even if it didn't make for a better movie in the end from an entertainment standpoint.
@@WeWatchedAMovie your points were valid and well founded as they represent what you would have expected. I was offering a different perspective since I’m a woman (not that speak for any other woman), but I understood her choices.
@@MichelMawon4982 thanks for this comment. Im not a woman but I share your perspective in that it was smart to intentionally show the perspective of the women harmed vs just making it about the how "quirky 🤪" the killer is. additionally it showed the many pitfalls that come with trying to report charismatic men for heinous acts (boyfriend second guessing her 90% surety, security guard referring her to the janitor (which feels like a small comment on race relations) and so on.) its a smart movie. if we know that the women SAd and killed it doesnt make sense spending time depicting that because we're not starved for content showing women being brutally harmed whether in fiction or real life (watch the news 🙄)
The movie isn't about the killer. It's about navigating the world as a woman amidst this killer. The killer is the worst example of how unsafe the world can be for women but all the other men are also representations of the things we fear. I thought the moments where each of the victims realized they were in danger were brilliantly acted and really frightening.
Oh you're definitely right! I just feel like it could have been both. I think things like that land harder when they are more nuanced is all. And I agree the victims were acted super well.
I noticed the same things about the movie. Especially when Anna Kendrick's character changed the scripts entirely on the show to show how strong, independent, and smarter than "all these chouv
I tried watching this movie a few times and just could not get through it. I thought there was so many other avenues that would make it more interesting, but I just found it a little dull. It was definitely like a Lifetime movie. It reminded me of the great Deadly Garage Sale movie. LOL. Oh well.
You quoted the movie Seven. I thought Woman Of The Hour was good, I watched it on a whim without knowing anything going in, and I enjoyed it, I really liked the actor who played Rodney, he was charming and creepy. I didn't think it was amazing though.
Dammit, Mike!!! I had to look it up cus even tho I heard it in my freaking head … In BRAD PITT voice 🤦🏻♂️ my mid 30s brain don’t retain movie trivia like it used to 😤
@@WeWatchedAMovie I find stingray in cobra kai annoying as can be but his performance in that show is a total shift from what he plays in cobra kai. Also stars the taron egerton from the Kingsman who is great
I agree, the truth is more interesting than fiction. … the movie seems a little plastic and “Hollywood” so far … and I agree the characters are too flat. It’s good to show the dark side of men’s dismissiveness, but not every male character needs to suck. … in fact it’s probably going to hurt our cause if it looks like women are dramatizing this This got good reviews on rotten tomatoes and I’m not sure why.
I genuinely thought the movie was so boring because like you said everything about this movie was all about dicks are horrible and all men will kill choose the bear! And I’m so sick and tired of that constantly being a thing when this movie could have been so interesting with the true story behind it but Anna Kendrick had to be the smartest person in the room only because she is a woman
I think sometimes we need to recognise that most films up until recently have told stories with the world perspective of men. And that's what they are no problem. But as we are increasingly seeing more women directing and writing your and other male perspectives may not see the reason for certain choices. That said, instead of immediately feeling attacked/ bashed. there is a poignant message that many keep missing because you see the world through your eyes. women aren't just bored and yelling because there is nothing better to talk about, this is the world many of us live in and again its a movie so it can't depict every man ever.

@@CrazypumaX well said-we don’t lack depictions of violence against women on our screens.

1st 😊 I wish Netflix Canada would get this film because I've heard good things about it 🤞🏼
That's wild it's not in Canada too
I heard about that guy from Mrballen!! Crazy stuff 🤯

It sucked... knowing something going in... the fact that you weren't moved, says everything. You need to watch better movies!
I liked most of the movie but towards the end it lost me a bit. Apparently Zodiac was an inspiration to Anna Kendrick for the movie. Loved Hysteria.
I can def see the Zodiac inspiration in the death scenes
Absolutely enjoying HYSTERIA 2 episodes left
Michael Jackson was on the Dating Game in 1972 when he was 14
They really left out the true history of the story which would hav3 made it way better.
SEVEN!!!! Love that movie. Whats in the BOX!!!??
7:45 "youre a fckin T-shirt....at best"

Based on true story and real close to what happened mind-blowing
Nailed it. 🎯

I really enjoyed Hysteria looking forward to your review. Are you planning on checking out Teacup with Scott Speedman? It’s on Peacock.
I considered peacock but from what I'm gathering most people are pretty wishy washy on it
*teacup
Your a movie of the week!! Hahahahaha fit so well with this movie. Detective Mills would be proud of you
Now I just wanna watch seven for 4277th time lol

I found you didn't I? HAHAHAHA thanks dude

anna Kendrick was fantastic in the voices. way better movie than this in my opinion.
great movie!
Weak and mediocre horror post Covid. Even before 2020 the genre was in a slump.
Does anyone have faith there will be a horror revival?
Amc documentary is beyond fkd
I'm watching it right now I'll get back to you in a couple hours edit good but alot made to me
I liked it
Seven!!! 😂

The movie sucked! Sorry, but it did!!!
So we got a great idea budget but then she ends up womansplaning the whole movie 😂 how could this be a number 1# if it’s not the real story…..
Typical woman directing 😂 sadly ….plus no showing gore
