I think that in the long term, these might actually help companies like JHS. Lowering the cost barrier of entry for guitar pedals grows the consumer base and eventually those consumers will want to upgrade. Kinda like the dealer on the corner and the first fix being free, gear junkies need their gear fix. This is the gateway gear that gets them hooked.
Coming around to this vid much later, it's literally true lol I got a JHS 3 series hall reverb and liked the quality of it enough that I got a PackRat. I got a Boss SD-1 and later a DM-2w. You should release a Bezos pedal. When you hook it up to your pedal board, it gradually starts doing what all the other pedals are doing, killing them off one by one.
The more there is cheap gear, the more it puts the pressure on the current "big players" in the music gear to really make their products actually worth the price difference.
He probably had to, in order to make the pedals sound their best, was hilarious though. I noticed that. My friend in TX had the I-35 named one, about $4500 at the time. I think he was in between banker jobs and sold it for about a grand higher. Too bad Mr. Collings passed, sad!
There's also an aspect of availability. Sitting in Pakistan I don't have easy access to your and other pedals as much as I want. essentially because of taxes the 3 series woidl cost me almost 250 with shipping. nux tomsline and brands like those are available here and the willingness of those companies to come to Pak is also to be admired. Saying that I sample an effect with a nux and decide maybe invest and buy something from the states with all the hassle that comes with it but knowing I want that type. I.e. I learned I'm not a tube screamer fan now and won't waste money and time figuring out how to get one here
A good plan. Another thing is that anybody can make anything sound interesting and cool, if they have enough musical belief in themselves. Passion and tone were not made first in America. Follow your own inner lights. Greetings from Canada.
@@WarrenPostma Tone wasn't made first in America? Maybe, but it was perfected in the US by one man: Leo Fender. You take his Stratocaster and plug it directly into his Vibrolux, or Twin, or Bassman, or Super Reverb and bam: Tone perfection, no pedal needed. Just sayin'. Cheers from Louisiana! P[>
@@patrickfoster4586 America is the land of Guitar, Rock and Roll, and surely IS the king for Electric Guitars and Amps, but my point about Tone was more philosophical. A lute player from the 13th century had no amp and no guitar, but he cared about tone a lot, and so did his luthier. Tone is ancient.
Also, I want to say that this dude is legit one of the best people I've seen on UA-cam. I don't care about what he talks about, but the way he talks about it. This is how I wish reviewers would be, how most influencers would be. Science based, logic based, educating without bias and keeping an open mind. So sad that that's kinda lost these days with people discarding their morals for some monetary gain. I'll say this, I don't have the money for JHS pedals now, but if I ever would fall onto some crazy money and I already got a good guitar and amp, then JHS pedals will be my go to brand.
What Amazon Basics suggests to me here is, "Honey if you're going to the store, can you pick up some bread, milk, eggs, a mini distortion, and a delay if it's fresh?" Also, still waiting to hear WILL IT CHUG?
“I hope tons of kids get these for Christmas.” That is both really awesome and really smart. The more kids get the guitar bug, the more people are buying guitar gear.
@Never PC You may have the least accurate name on the internet. That's the wokest possible take you could ever have on this. Quick question for you: does NOT buying these improve economic conditions for poor children in China?
@@glo2ube786 you're fighting a caricature of zoomer music. Clairo, Covet, and any contemporary shoegaze band uses guitars a lot, and even if other bands don't there's nothing inherently wrong with using a different instrument to express yourself
I like that as a retailer with your own line of pedals you are not just pushing your own product but spreading knowledge, history and education and being neutral more or less.
I only just got back into guitar after about a 10 year hiatus and the amount of affordable pedals is straight insane now! The only one I could afford in high school was a digitech grunge pedal, now people can have nearly any kind they could imagine, I love this! I know this was a livestream a long time ago, but I’ve only just found this and 60cyclehum and I e been binging the two of your videos constantly!
That's where monopolists stop right...at the basics. What a naive and short-sighted vision of what Amazon is doing. The people amazon is squeezing out disagree. Amazon has other people take risk to build a market, then they take the best marketing info from those risk-taking entrepreneurs and drives them out of business by marketing directly against them on the Amazon platform. It has happened thousands of times already. Worse, Amazon is destroying our nationwide distribution and retail system…yay…
Videos like this makes me aware of how important good YT video content is. And that JHS / Josh, whether I follow their opinion or not, do provide just that. Not choosing sides is an option.
@@funkyfurballs1078 mine is the Univox/Kay Effector. Les Paul style body, but built in echo, tremolo, wah and whirlwind (basically all variations on a tremolo effect) plus fuzz and phase (which threw the pickups out of phase.) I have broken the neck twice. I have switched the pickups multiple times (the current are actual Les Paul’s.) And none of the effects work now. But I still really enjoy the look and feel of that guitar.
I stumbled onto NUX a while back & have since bought a handful of their pedals. IMO they make the best pedals from China. The Tape Core Deluxe is an incredible stereo RE-201 clone, with hidden settings for wow & flutter. The Verdugo series pedals are top notch, especially the JTC pro looper (6 hours record time, STEREO input, drum machine, load backing tracks into it from your computer, save to computer, cab emulator, amazing for the price). As for drives, first I bought the Horseman, then Tube Man, then wanting a blues breaker style I got the Morning Star. I have read on the internet that if you look inside KOKKO pedals, you find NUX printed on the PCB. I believe they make their best stuff as NUX, then re-brand with cheaper parts & manufacturing as KOKKO, & that is also now rebranded as AmazonBasics. Do yourself a favor & check out the nicer pedals from NUX you will be very surprised at the specs, price, & sound.
Golden age of Effects! NUX does some great stuff for beginner practice tools, and I WISH stuff like these pedals (& their other products) were available to me 20 years ago!
I recently brought a JHS panther cub. A large factor in this decision was this UA-cam channel. I appreciate all the videos and information guys and I wanted to support JHS and have a JHS pedal on my board. Of course having a great sounding tap temp analogue delay is more important than it's brand, so thanks for making a excellent pedal.
11:00 you bring up the idea that a guitar is a basic need. I do absolutely believe that if your house doesn't have at least 1 guitar in a corner on a stand or even packed away under the bed or in a closet, then your house is not on the list of hangout spots.
I bought a NUX looper pedal (from Amazon actually). I called their phone number when I was having an issue with it. Talked to someone. He confirmed it couldn't work the way I was expecting it to. He was very nice on the phone. Side note: ended up with DigiTech Trio+ and I'm super happy
I watched this two years after it was released, and one thing that occurred to me is that if someone wanted to get into modding and building pedals, the less expensive amazon pedals could make someone more comfortable with modding because they aren't messing with something that will be $100+ lost if they screw up.
@@Archlegan prefer yea...but its hard getting cheap through-hole stuff to mod unless you buy old rocktek pedals, Behringer pedals are surface mount but for me are pretty easy to mod because they are a normal size....mini petals are a nightmare to mod

I love this channel so much!! Almost twice as good as the Amazon basic channel! Seriously, Josh you show great passion for what you do, are a great educator and also it looks like that you seem to care very much about your employees and I respect that very much. People need to understand that when you buy stuff, you are "voting" for companies with your cash. Although it is not always possible because we don't have an unlimited budget, I always prefer to pay extra for a smaller business with values that I connect with. So I'll see if my wife would be willing to vote for you on my behalf this Christmas ;P Take care, continue the good work.
Cheap pedals are a gateway to a lot of fun. Plus you can always swap out when you upgrade or Frankenstein them and mod them without guilt. Nice to see you all weighing in so positively on this.
Guitar pedal sales are like a liquor store, you don't need liquor to survive, but when you have a desire, it's there. At the liquor store looking at the whiskey isle you have the top shelf whiskeys with the fancy bottles and great reviews, and the bottom shelf good for getting you drunk. JHS is top shelf whiskey with a storied history, Amazon basics is bottom shelf gut punch, or those little bottles of booze they have behind the counter for a quick fix. Also, people now are nostalgic about the Silvertone crap they bought at Sears, in 40 years we'll be waxing poetically about these.
IDK buddy...my 1965 Silvertone head and cab in my living room really speak for themselves, if you know what I'm saying. I have no history with the equipment, and have only had it for a few years, but ears don't lie and the kit sounds mint.
I believe these pedals will make the “boutique” pedal companies in the long run. Think of these pedals as an entry level Squier. The one thing you can count on is that people who play guitar love to upgrade equipment. When they find the pedals they like and play for a bit they will want to upgrade to the more expensive “boutique” pedals of that effect type.
Something I DO really like about cheap pedals is they get you the useability of the pedal. I can see if a chorus would be USEFUL to me. And if it is. Then I’ll buy a real nice one to have for years.
Josh, my first guitar was also a Synsonics from Sam's Club! It came with a 15w amp. I still have the guitar. It's a red strat. I haven't played it in years, and it definitely needs a setup. I'm not sure if it even has a truss rod. But back in high school jazz band, among seven other guitarists, the teacher often mentioned how great my tone was.
I was 14 in 1977...life would have been amazing if these pedals would have been available then. Adjusting for inflation, the pedals would have sold for around $6 to $12, depending on the pedal.
@ 15:02 "It's a gateway" great, so now Amazon gets to start our kids addiction and obsession with pedals. It's bad enough us parents are already addicted. Jeff Beso's is evil 😈
I'm 56. I recently got back into playing the guitar again. I don't have a ton of money to buy gear, so I watch a lot of UA-cam videos to get ideas on what I can get that's pretty good for a decent price. I watch this channel alot, I get the real skinny here, no BS. I have a Monoprice all tube combo amp I bought on Amazon for $250 delivered to my door, it's great. I used to build amps as a hobby and know alot about them and have made some really cool ones, but I get good tones from it, period, and it was half what just the parts would cost to build one. I bought 3 pedals so far on Amazon - A Demon Tube screamer clone, which has a switch for ts9 / ts808, which does nothing, because the circuits are basically the same, a Mosky magnetic delay, and a Flamma multi modulation pedal. I also got a nice Ibanez 335 clone and upgraded the tuners and pickups, I spent less than a grand on all this stuff and I am getting great sounds. As I continue buying pedals, I am going to get a JHS one at some point, because I feel like I owe it to him for all the great free info. Based on Josh's Univibe video, I just bought an Electro Harmonix Good Vibes pedal on Ebay. There's nothing wrong with buying things on Amazon.
Josh, will you have to do a new effect for your videos now... "He has the bubble envelope" ? I hope you're keeping the envelopes...they're gonna add a lot of value to those vintage pedals in 50 years...
the only one i would consider getting is the Mooer Pitch Box, ( easy in on the de-tune chorus sound....and that is all i would use it for ) that's all you need is 3 to 16 cents of de-tune for something that a BBD can't do. they should make a box specifically for that, with +/- detune, ( +/- 1 to 9 cents ), on either side of the dry signal ..... That Would Rule !!!
I hate to be this guy but Nux is pronounced ‘new ex’ - hence why they write it: nu>x. Please let people know that I Adam Jones knew something about pedals that Josh didn’t. The tingling waves of power that I feel rolling through me right now is incredible.
I was one of 5 people that understood the Proberbs 31 woman joke🙋🏽♂️ lol. Lowkey got super hyped when you said that Josh, I really appreciate you guys and all the employees that work so hard to make JHS such a great pedal company, if not the BEST company on the market! True authenticity, humor, and personality. JHS rocks!😆
The first time I sat and watched an entire video on this channel: Was a review by Josh of a bunch of budget-friendly overdrives - or maybe it was distortion pedals. By the end of that video, fuelled by Josh's honesty, sincerity and integrity, I'd made up my mind: I was going to sell a few of my cheap, nasty TC Electronics and invest in a Tumnus and a Strymon Nightsky. Thank you, Josh for your guidance. Just kidding. Your skill, knowledge and devotion to the art means that I am quite literally saving my pennies in order to afford your products. You're a legend. 'Nuff said!
Nu-x (new ex) make some mighty pedals for the price. I've got their Roctary pedal which is a Leslie speaker pedal with octaves, so you can make your guitar sound like a Hammond organ. Actually the octave part is fairly useless (though not bad on keyboards), but the Leslie speaker simulation is simply incredible, it's even got a drive control, so you can push the sound into a bit of overdrive. I've also got a Tape Core Deluxe, which is Nu-x's version of the Roland Space Echo. You can switch between all seven tape head combinations and it's got that great warm, tapey break-up sound. It's also got tap tempo and a loop function, and you can do that wild spacey tape feedback stuff. Both of these pedals are stereo and cost me $125 (Australian) which is about eighty bucks US, maybe a tad more. Insanely good value -- even if the English translations on their instruction manuals leave you completely and utterly confused.
Look up the part number for something on your lawnmower. You’ll see the same thing. There are probably a handful of companies making the parts for most things in any industry.
Hate that I missed this live, but I love that OEM clones are out there for bedroom hackers like me who love to experiment with a bunch of different effects. I actually have that Morningstar pedal and got it because it was a Morning Glory/Blues Driver clone! ✌🏻🎸
Why are some people always trying to start crap?? I’m mean really!! If u don’t want to hear about Amazon pedals, don’t watch this video dude!! Love what ur doing on this channel!! Keep killin it!!
My first guitar was a Silvertone from Sears which was really a Harmony because my parents had a Sears credit card and could order it from the Sears catalog and have it shipped to our home.. Sears was the biggest retailer at the time and was the Amazon of the mid-20th century. My first amp was a Silvertone which was really a Danelectro because Sears. So this was going on for decades. Today Silvertone stuf sells on the vintage market along with Harmony, Danelectro, and Kay which was all stuff sold to Sears labeled as Silvertone. All the mail-order companies like Montgomery Ward did the same thing. So nothing is new under the sun.
I agree with most of your takes on these pedals targeting different markets, but I have Chase Bliss, JHS, an H9, and Nux on my board. I’m a professional musician and I don’t really care what gear costs if it fills the need. For my infrequent univibe needs, I wasn’t happy with the H9 vibe, the Nux isn’t bad at all, and it has a tiny footprint.
I recently bought the Azor "Classical Overdrive" pedal a few months ago....probably made by the same company, companies that make the Amazon pedals. As an OD? Not bad, didn't hate it, didn't love it..it WAS surprisingly quiet. However... With it's gain cranked up...it's the best fuzz pedal I own. It nails that Gibson Fuzz, "Satisfaction" sound...in fact better than two FZ-1 clones I have. Price? $20.
Best Foods: West of the Mississippi River Hellman's: East of the Mississippi River Both are Mayo Ibanez - Maxon Amazon - Nux You share a unique and refreshingly honest perspective on this, with history on your side. ...Kind of like the "First Act" of Guitars Proverbs 31 girl! I married one of those... sounds like y'all did too!
I just wanna say I do not play guitar. I am a singer/cajon/harmonica player for Stillfire Bellows but I LOVE your videos! Super interesting to me and I send these to our guitar player all the time to help expand our sound as we have very recently starting incorporating electric guitar and pedals into our music! Kudos!
That first jam was awesome, totally sounded like the live version of Bullet the Blue Sky from the Rattle and Hum album, not bad for a budget pedal 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻😎
As a consumer, I love JHS because of their funny, informative vids and their willingness to highlight other brands. They make great pedals, too. And I love Amazon because they offer different brands of everything at different competing prices, including their own brands. As a consumer, I am free to choose to buy JHS, Amazon, Boss, Mosky, RAT, or my fave GFS pedals (Guitar Fetish). Or not. Yet, it's interesting how many on this comment section are complaining about Amazon and capitalism exploiting workers in Chinese sweatshops, but not a peep about Communist China policies like forced labor in said Chinese sweatshop. Or China's 6/12 work rule: 6 days a week and 12 hr days. Or internment camps of Chinese Muslims. Or a lack of a free press, no free elections, and no free speech. Yet somehow, it's Amazon and capitalism that are the bad guys. Interesting... That said: Keep up the good work, JHS!
well, you're perfectly arguing against yourself because Amazon and China and US neoliberal politics and policies, including stagnant wages and monster consumer debt, are the same machine, hand in glove.
You guys were very mature about the amazon pedals - kudos. I buy these ones and I'm not 12 years old. I think this helps you long-term because when I decide to refine my sound I will look for something that JHS has developed, refined and perfected. If I don't, I probably wouldn't have bought your pedals in the first place. These are stepping stones. To give you an idea, I am considering a boss programmable EQ pedal as it's stereo, can have different presets and therefore is far more versatile than a pair of clones or behringers. For overdrive, it will probably come down to the same things but I want to experience Soul food, OCD, Morning glory on top of my klon clone, screamer and timmy copies. I can own these, familiarise myself with the sounds and develop my preferences and how I use them. I would not be able to develop my needs for JHS pedals and be able to say which truly satisfies me without experiencing a broader palette.
Not true. Electrocute means to kill or severely injure by electricity. Of course can be used with hyperbole rather than for its literal definition. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/electrocute
Websters is incorrect. They are giving the colloquial definition because the term has been used incorrectly so frequently. "cution" in the word "electrocution" comes from the word "execution." The etymology literally means "electrical execution."
Sweet video: favorite parts: "Proverbs 31 - she's a keeper", re-naming pedals, playing, and overall discussion. Future episodes for this: shootout of the danelectro pedalboard behind drummer and the amazon basics...see what Era did OEM rebranding better.
I decided to buy an Amazon basics compressor after saving a weeks worth of tips from the counter I work at. I definitely aspire to a JHS pedal and a Wampler in the future which would be an overdrive or a delay. For now I figure a $25 Amazon compressor is better than no compressor.
8:54 Hate to be that guy but electrocution literally means death by electricity lol. But you can certainly be shocked/zapped without being electrocuted 👍
Fantastic breakdown of the Amazon pedals and for covering all the basics (pun intended). Amazon is just the Montgomery Ward of the 21st century. Bless you guys and keep making awesome videos 😁
When I was first playing I needed a board for some gig we had and every pedal was like 20-40 bucks and now that board has taught me how to use pedals and 2 other people in the last few months have gotten not only into pedals but learned guitar because they had the ability to learn on my board, and now I am loaning to a small church band that is constantly getting new students and my goal is to teach them as much as I can with out them having to spend a dime, so they can learn the important stuff and then later on buy the expensive stuff.
Stuff like this it's just an opportunity for certain people to start virtue signalling. "oh, look at me, look how I'm righteous and hate big companies and their oppression, look at me!" They don't even care about the facts or content
My process is, buy local if it isnt available local as a last resort go to amazon or something like that! works for me and my local friends they are youre greatest resource
1,5K comments... JHS, do you have stats on your most commented UA-cam episodes? Because if this is the most commented (factoring in the time passed since release, of course), this also tells a lot :)) As far as NUX is concerned, they to make a ton of stuff under their own brand. They are what I'd call a "higher-tier Chinese brandname manufacturers". Used a couple of their products, and really can't say anything negative. Nice stuff. As far as JHS is concerned - you guys are huge! Your approach to making videos is probably (undoubtedly!) the most exciting among guitar equipment companies out there!

So true, we live in a new golden age of pedals, plenty to choose from in every price range.
I grew up staring at the Sears catalog guitars and amps, in the 70’s. They were cheap and fun
and drove my love for guitar.
I really love the audible edit at 0:24. Perfectly captures the substance and the spirit of Muzak. Genius.
"People who are buying pedals at a higher price point are not buying Amazon pedals" Nick said exactly how I feel about these pedals.
Reminiscent of what they said when the first tiny basic Japanese automobiles appeared in the US in the early 1970's.
I literally ordered three of the Azor $20ish pedals the same day I ordered two JHS pedals.
I buy 500 dollar pedals and i buy cheap stuff like this....
Great people at JHS. Really impressed. Well educated, humble, smart.
Amazon should have called their pedal line "JAMazon".
That's the looper's name

Every single house on a 'generic house selling TV show' has at least one acoustic abomination sitting in a corner. Is that the sort you mean? ;)
And how
@@CurrieNerd I'd hang out in any of those houses.

I watched this two years after it was released, and one thing that occurred to me is that if someone wanted to get into modding and building pedals, the less expensive amazon pedals could make someone more comfortable with modding because they aren't messing with something that will be $100+ lost if they screw up.
naah not so much. that stuff I saw in their pictures was surface mount parts. Modders like myself prefer to work on through-hole pcbs.
@@Archlegan prefer yea...but its hard getting cheap through-hole stuff to mod unless you buy old rocktek pedals, Behringer pedals are surface mount but for me are pretty easy to mod because they are a normal size....mini petals are a nightmare to mod

Seriously, Josh you show great passion for what you do, are a great educator and also it looks like that you seem to care very much about your employees and I respect that very much. People need to understand that when you buy stuff, you are "voting" for companies with your cash. So I'll see if my wife would be willing to vote for you on my behalf this Christmas ;P Take care, continue the good work.
I’m not a fan of Amazon at all, but history is repeating itself going back to Sears Silvertone.
You don't need liquor to survive?
@@Appl3-p13 Yeah, sometimes a shot of Brandy after near death experiences on the freeway helps a lot.
This is the coolest video format for equipment reviews. Just 3 cool musicians talking about gear and jamming! This was GREAT!
as an ex-kroger employee, people genuinely think we DID make things in "the back".
Every restaurant I've ever worked at customers thought this. Like we're butchering steaks "back there" lol
I gotta give it to you, making an hour long video about a new pedal line, without ever getting boring, you are a natural.
The Willhelm Scream soundbite was killing me.

great, so now Amazon gets to start our kids addiction and obsession with pedals. It's bad enough us parents are already addicted. Jeff Beso's is evil 😈
Let me know when I can get decent smack on Amazingon. Gateway dope first natch.
Well, music performance actually increases brain function though. Not so sure about movies and video games.
I hope you're keeping the envelopes...they're gonna add a lot of value to those vintage pedals in 50 years...
the only one i would consider getting is the Mooer Pitch Box, ( easy in on the de-tune chorus sound....and that is all i would use it for )
that's all you need is 3 to 16 cents of de-tune for something that a BBD can't do.
they should make a box specifically for that, with +/- detune, ( +/- 1 to 9 cents ), on either side of the dry signal .....

Pretty sure Dave Grohl says in his autobio that this was his first guitar as well.
Nothing changes but faces and names..
That response to the instragram was just class. Congrats.
I love these episodes. Love that u guys do this. Learning is so fun.
