As a black woman, I am so proud that you are reaching out and showing your students how to treat women. This is amazing! Also, I am so glad that you said that you started teaching later in life bc I am going to be graduating at the age of 31, two kids, and a husband. There were plenty of times that I thought I had no business trying to be a teacher, so thank you! Tell your students they can do anything! I am a veteran, a domestic abuse survivor, and soon to be a teacher. Their limit is as far as the sky!!!!
You're going to be an awesome teacher! You have what the younger teachers don't- experience! I went back to school to be a teacher in my 30s with a husband and three kids to take care of. Those were definitely tough times. I started teaching at the old age of 38! 😱and it's been great! Very demanding, but videos like this are incredibly inspiring, motivating, and so, so helpful! 😊
ashley hayes I'm teaching late in life too! I'm 41 and it's my 5th year! I was a TA for 6 years, 3 years of which I had my Masters. Never too late!!! #salute😘
ashley kofoed congrats to you!!! You bring so much life experience (a lot of similar to me...I too survived domestic violence) you’re going be awesome.
I about died at the castrating animals and snake blood shots! Too funny! I loved seeing your students here. They are a riot. I was 27 as well when I started teaching. I had a communications degree that was basically worthless--until now. I run the school website and am the unofficial school photographer.
First of all, I am so glad that you touched on the fact that you had a crappy day. Sometimes, I feel like I am the only teacher that has crappy days because colleagues never share insight to what's going on in their classroom and teachers online seem like they've got it all together! When I was watching this video, I thought to myself "Wow Reynold's really just has it together every single day" and then I got to the part where you mentioned that your lunch group was rowdy and your day wasn't the best. That made me feel better about my own crappy days because i did not feel so alone. I would LOVE a video on how you take your student's abroad. It is something that I would want to do in the future when I have been teaching longer.
It’s a little insulting to compliment black people about being well spoken. It kinda implies that most black people aren’t well spoken. Which we all know is racist nonsense.
I loved My Side of the Mountain, when I was a kid. I’m a high school English teacher, with the Peace Corps , in Armenia. Finding some useful tips from your channel. Thanks!
+Miss A they really make this job a pleasure. Thanks for a shouting them out. I love telling them when someone comments on them. Have a beautiful night!
Another great video! 😊 I’ve been binge watching your videos tonight ready for my week of teacher training ahead!! Super nervous but also super excited! You’ve become a teaching inspiration for me, so I’m hoping I can put your advice into practice and make a great first impression 😊
I just read an excerpt and now I feel like I should read the book you suggested “Teach Like Your Hair is on Fire.” Last year my overhead projector was literally smoking and I was just so into the lesson with my kids they had to yell at me that it was almost on fire. Obviously that was the end of the lesson - and the overhead projector. I enjoy your content and realness of your vlogs. Thanks for sharing!
I just think Taj is THE BEST ! He's your right hand man, your vice president, your chief of staff. love it! ... Hatchet the Horror Movie haha .... Your Picture Replacement Scheme is great!
My colleague and her H.S. science teacher hubby take his science research kids to Belize each year and have a fabulous time. It's a gorgeous place! ❤️ and hugs! Your boys are simply amazing young men! And your son is wonderful!
Very cool! You’re awesome! So inspiring!! I teach K-8 Art at a Hebrew School in Brooklyn. I hope to make an influence on their lives the way you are with your kids. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Mannn you make me want to teach English! (I already have a BA in English) but I recently changed my mind and I'm pursuing ECCE. Sigh lol you make teaching English so creative and fun!!
I love Storybird! I've been using it since they started up and I was a story moderator for a few years when I had more time. It is such an awesome site for kids who need inspiration for writing. The magnetic poetry option is cool too.
Thanks for the bit about having lunch with your students and needing it to be chill. I've been having my students eat in my room this year and they've been loving it! Sometimes, though, my 5th graders get a bit rowdy. I'd hate to ask them to leave, but i know i need to if they get to be too crazy. I also don't want to kick all the boys out because they are just more energetic than the girls and it'd be weird if it was just me and the girls. Anyway, do you have any tips about what to say to them once they get rowdy, or do you just ask them to leave? Thanks CJ!
Yes! Please do a video on how teachers can take students on trips overseas...or even outside their own state. I'm a native NY who is now teaching in the Midwest and I have a lot of students who have never been outside of their own state. Therefore a lot of them have stereotypes about NYers and other people who are not from the midwest. They always ask me why I left NY and it's hard to explain to them because no matter how I explain it to them, they either don't understand or don't want to listen (I have a feeling it's the latter).
Marilyn Manson's got star quality. Thank you for sharing your lessons - great ideas coming this way. Like to see how you scaffold the children's books. Great idea to have it very structured and have them develop certain parts of the plot on specific pages. Would make it much less biased to assess. I also loved the point you made about balancing putting YOUR needs before the student needs. I throw all of myself into this and I burn out.
ESSENTIAL to bring in positive female role models and developing a working knowledge of equity / feminism. So important today. Here's some inspiration from a school in NY: ua-cam.com/video/9Vh60p4p2QM/v-deo.html
Another awesome video full of tips and reflection. Regarding your lunch hangout, have you considered a student pact? Students who break the pact must earn back the lunch privilege. The students can come up with specifics. On another note, it's almost fall break on this side of the universe - a time to sleep in and party like it's 1999 - teacher style!
So love this video. Great to see your students and hear their thoughts about you and your class. Also thanks for being vulnerable! This is off topic but I used your apology note. I mock my roommate for using so much salt on her food lol and she loved it haha
Hey! Love your videos! I teach at a catholic school in Pennsylvania and I am trying to start a Spanish club! A trip to a Spanish speaking country would be a great way to practice conversations! Do you think that I can do this with elementary kids ? 4th - 8 th grades
I would be so grateful if you gave me some information on how you can take your students abroad! I'd love to do that, but I don't even know where to start.
@@CJReynolds thanks so much, you have been really helpful! I teach high school biology so Costa Rica might be where we go! Plus, I've studied abroad there as well. Thanks again!
Wow I am so sorry school is turning into a generic institution where the heart and individuality is being gutted out. I have a few more years to go. I am trying to keep my musical and theatrical self intact. I know these trip were the best.
Fairy Tail! I watch that anime, you should get your kids into manga they're comic books based on anime, they might be interested and you can find a lot of them for free online mangareader and mangfox are good sites ^x^
Reynolds!! I love you. But nothing replaces parenting. You can't fix it. Stop trying. Like you said focus on the ones flying under the radar. They need you too.
I was the under the radar kid. And trust me WE NOTICED. I'm not saying don't help them all but you don't have the tools, time or tenacity to fix their issues. You're doing the best and the MOST!! God Bless!
He will!!! And i will... it just takes time. My teaching style is just the same. It works.... it is for sure harder to reach to the “incarcerated parents” kids... but we will get it done
I was an "under the radar" kid. Reynolds reminds me of my former physics teacher. They both just show that you're noticed, you are loved, and you're in a safe place to just talk and I won't judge you. I was not an incarcerated kid but just a kid who wasn't getting much attention from my parents aside from academics.
Hey Reynolds! The Spanish teacher is planning a trip to Cuba and it's her first time planning a trip abroad. Any tips? We need to raise money because we are a Title 1 School and our student do not have the means to pay for the trip on their own. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The boys are all very well-spoken and so sweet! Glad they are all enjoying the school year so far.

Thank you for really noticing the kids. Reminds me of the Lord, how He also sees and cares for us. Keep it up, they need you
When your kid said that man looked like Usher I lost it! Your students are hilarious. 🤣

I try. 😊
I love the lifemap idea and I'm totally stealing once I get my classroom!
Lol. Loved this video, CJ. Somehow I felt I knew these stories already.
Hatchet and my side of the mountain were the books you and mr Colby sharp talked about in teacher talk live, now your kids can read them too !!
+Jenny Jay 😂😂😂great memory! My Side of the Mountain was one of my favorites as a kid.

Namely the concept of intersectionality (term "feminism" can be scary for newbs)
Oh shoot! I'm watching from Belize! Big up!
Make sure Ham reads "Hatchet" if he thinks it's a horror story lol. Good book!
+Sara Childs - The Onlyschooling Mom that cracked me up so bad when he said that!!😂😂😂
Hey Reynolds! As usual, I'm inspired and ready to pack my babies up for a trip! How do you do it? Video, please!!!😉

That's awesome! I haven't heard from you in a while. Glad you are well! Let your roommate know that the salt catches up to you after 30. 😏
I know!! I just started college a couple weeks ago and was even too busy to watch or comment on your videos.
Hahaha ok I will do that!!
just awesome
What do you do if you have a really great student who just doesn't have the means to go on the trip? Any way to finance?
I can not wait to be an educator one day! Is your school a charter school? I love that you have more freedom in the classroom.
I would love to hear about taking students abroad.

Trips abroad with students!!!??? I need this in their lives😮. Info PLEEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE!

Do you have a site where you post resources such as the outline to the childrens’ book?
