I love that you mention the historical context and the idea that you end up in this position, so you need to train it.
Have you done short staff, or whip stick? I've been training xingyi whip stick, and i feel like it's super practical, especially for hikers, which is popular in my area.
There are so many situations you end up in that don't make sense to practice until you realize why you are there.

You know there are parts of kungfu forms where they actually drop the weapon and use the hands and visa versa. I didn't notice this until now.
