I watched-listened to the The Dead do a very credible rendition of The Who’s ‘Baba O’riley’ during a sound check in 1986. The Dead w/ Bob Dylan AND The Band. I’d never been a big ‘Dead-head’ but that was a hell of a show.

    [Verse 1]
When the wind blows, and the rain feels cold
With a head full of snow, with a head full of snow
In the window, there's a face you know
Don't the night pass slow? Don't the nights pass slow?
    [Chorus]
The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind
Just another mad, mad day on the road
I am just living to be lying by your side
But I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
    [Verse 2]
Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes
Going to warm my bones, going to warm my bones
I've got silence on my radio
Let the airwaves flow, let the airwaves flow
    [Chorus]
For I am sleeping under strange, strange skies
Just another mad, mad day on the road
My dreams is fading down the railway line
I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
    [Bridge]
I'm hiding, sister, and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm hiding, baby, but I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
    Let it go now
    Come on up, baby
    Yeah, let it go now
    Yeah
    Flow now, baby
    Yeah, come on now, yeah
    Hey
    [Outro]
    Yeah, I'm coming home
'Cause I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
On down the road, on down the road
    Yeah, yeah, baby

Garcia never plays a tune like anyone else or like the music one would recognize - I listened to My Funny Valentine??? Garcia is simply an awesome musician, he's a musical genius. Genius's are always off on a tangent, somewhere within the reality of the point at hand.

Actually there were many connections between the Dead and Stones. The Stones helped out the Dead on their European tour in 72,and shared flights in US while on tour. Also the Stones tour manager who got disillusioned after Altamont was poached by the Dead, because they were chaotic and saw how organised the Stones had become. Then factor in the way the Stones introduced what is now called Americana..clearly there was crossover between these two bands

Lots of covers the stones did the dead did just after. Around and around was one. I was learning guitar back then I copied the stones more but realized later in effect had learned many dead songs. Funny in college I was acarones fan but all roommates were dead heads. There were hours of conversationscre both bands

Ah, the short-lived Travis Bean period. And one of the nice things about the JGB was that on these ballads you could actually hear Donna sing (as opposed to shout), and sing well.
Now, get this: Nicky Hopkins, who played piano on the original "Moonlight Mile" with the Stones, had played with the JGB the previous winter for several months. Don't know if Nicky-- wonderful guy, terrific musician-- inspired Jerry to cover this song, but I'd like to think he did.

I met Jerry and the band including Bear, who dosed me and turned me on to one of his dealers. so their planting a Stones tune. I don’t think the Stones could play Grateful Dead and make it sound better than the Dead , the fact is they never tried. This sounds better than the Stones own version. If you can prove me wrong, let me know. The Stones dressed up with leather and payed the price of that type of gear at Altamonte. One way or another this darkness got to give.Jerry could play circles around those dude’s. ⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️

The one thing I've always loved about the Stones is that, with very few exceptions, even their most languid ballads have a kick to them, a section where the beat kicks in at a moderate tempo and completes the song and accentuates its urgency. This version completely lacks that tempo change. A lot of people compare this live version to the Stones studio version. The original version was , indeed a classic, and the live Stones' version I've seen on UA-cam falls short of it. This version, just by virtue of eliminating the last, most urgent, final verse (plus a couple of others if I'm not mistaken), falls short even of the Stones' imperfect live version.

Donna Jean Godchaux. Her & her hubby played with the Dead & Jerry' side bands in the 1970's.

Yes. Who also sang backup for Elvis songs and some others as she was a local Muscle Shoals Alabama singer. She would go after school & sing backup on whatever was needed at the time.

Open tuned track written by Taylor? Taylor writing lyrics? Now - I do know that Keith was NOT around for the recording of this track...but, it's quirkiness is all Mick Jagger. It's sounds like a singer - who plays guitar as well - came up with the signature "eastern" sounding riff/melody...Mick Jagger has been playing guitar for a LONG time as well...Songs like Hold On To Your Hat SOUND like Keith wrote the main riff...but it's all Mick in open G...he has it down too (which is why Brown Sugar's main lick is all Micky J.). Mick Taylor laid some great guitar work OVER the song...but I disagree that he wrote it...he was only in the band for what - a year and a half at this point? I doubt he would have imposed himself that much, that early...he DID start to impose after Exile...Plus - nothing Mick Taylor ever did AFTER Moonlight Mile sounds like Moonlight Mile...It's open tuning drone string stuff - Mick and Keith's forté - NOT Mick Taylor's...In MY opinion that is...as a guitarist as well, this is my opinion. Mick T. always said that he "wasn't challenged" in the Stones and would get BORED onstage...But - when he left - what did HE DO??? Nothing. He didn't do any Pat Matheny type stuff...Ry Cooder type stuff...Nothing. Just tired blues with OTHER people singing for the last 30+ years. Ronnie was more proficient in other bands, but he brought the FUN back to the Stones. Count the smiles onstage when Mick T. was in the band and count them after Ronnie Joined...MUCH happier band. I was going to put the caveat in there about the HEAVY dope use when Taylor was in the band but that continued on the '75 tour that Ronnie was on and through the Some Girls tour, etc. So, even with the drugs, the band had/has more fun with Ronnie than with Mick Taylor. I'd rather the Stones be together with Ronnie than broken up because of Taylor. Anyway, enough about that huh? :^) Take care!

Mick Taylor played in an open key very often HE WAS THE SLIDE PLAYER. I agree it is not likely he wrote this song. The credits on the album would show that though. Cheers.

Mick Jagger wrote this song. In Kieth Richards autobiography he says of this track, "It was all Mick." Kieth was too strung out and wasn't even in the studio for this one. Yes, Mick Taylor added some great slide but it was all at the direction of Jagger.

Rober: You are correct. Mick Taylor played open tunings. Hell Brian Jones played more open tunings while he was in the band than Richards did...

Actually Mick Jagger wrote this in the studio (with Mick Taylor.) Jagger also played guitar on it, which you can see when they do it live

Man I was so excited to see that JGB covered this masterpiece. Then I hit play and God this is pretty awful. I knew when I saw Donna creeping around in the video that she was gonna pitch it all over the shop. The smack musta been good that night cause this is about as slow as humans can play. Are there any versions of this performed in the 80s or 90s after Keith and Donna were out of the picture? This is rough.
