Wadi Hawir - Oman's Most Amazing Wadi

- Wadi Hawir is approx. a 3 hours drive from Muscat. With the new Bid bid - Sur highway open it’s a very pleasurable and safe drive.
Wadi Hawir is basically the other side of the more famous and crowded Wadi Bani Khalid and that’s where the comparison ends. Wadi Hawir is more untouched, raw and is one of the most scenic and beautiful Wadi’s in Oman ( in my opinion).
To get to wadi Hawir you take the turn off from the main highway and following the sign to wadi Bani khalid, only once you reach the final left that takes you to wadi Bani khalid Village you keep going straight instead . After awhile you will need to take a left and an immediate right and this road follows the wadi till the end of the village where you park your car and start the trek towards the wadi. You basically have to follow the wadi and about half a km into the trek you will need to take a right along the wadi path towards the mountains ( see in the video ).
We did the trek with our daughters aged 5 and 7 and some other friends and we did it with the help of our local Omani contact Amjad, whom we met from our previous trip to Wadi Bani Khalid. Absolutely recommend him to visit Wadi Bani khalid/ Mukul Caves and Wadi Hawer.
Although the entire trek is apparently 4 - 5 hours we did the trek only up to the 2nd waterfall ( bigger water fall). We left Muscat at 7am and reached the trekking point at 10am. It took us approx 1.5 hours each way but it was a very leisure trek.
Tips
- During the winter/ colder Months wear a wetsuit, it gets pretty cold.
- You’ll need dry bags, waterproof shoes and related gear.
- Floatation devices are a must irrespective of your swimming skills.
- Helmets ( always a good option)
- There are abseiling points at the first big water falls and many other areas.
- We found it easier and more enjoyable to keep following the wadi instead of trekking.
- Although the entire trek is pretty long the trek up-to the main waterfalls is perfect and doable for most people with moderate fitness levels.
- There are a lot of grocery shops at Wadi Bani Khalid but non at Wadi Hawer so stock up before or grab your snacks after the trek.
- Cliff/ wadi jumps into the water are a must and a great experience for the kids too.
- Also when In the water, we found it easier to swim on the surface rather than trying to walk as this avoided us slipping and bumping into rocks.
- Based on the colour of the moss on the rocks you will soon figure out the super slippery ones.
Have fun it’s one of the best Wadi’s.
