My mum used to sing this song. When in the kitchen. I always thought it was a silly song she had made up. But I have sense found out that it's not. RIP mum. Thank you for the song again. Brings back some wonderful memories of my mum....❤❤❤❤
Loved that banjo and the performance. My Dad’s favorite song to sing while doing chores (he worked 6 days a week up to 10 hrs a day as a delivery driver to keep us all housed & fed). So I learned the “how can I work” stanza as: “how can I work/like other folk do?/well how can I work/when the sky is so blue?” Made sense in San Diego CA. Thanks for the post & for the memories moments!
My Grandfather would bounce the babies on his knees and sing this song. His family sang this at his memorial. "Hallelujah I'm a bum" reminds me of the wonderful Grandfather that was a hard worker that loved his family.
As a person who's pop grew up in Australia during the depression this is a good song as it originated in Australia and my pop still sings this song to this day and I showed this to him and he. Was delighted
Interesting I had no idea it had a history in Australia. I mean it makes sense. I just haven’t been successful in finding a lot of history on this song Outside of what we are told already. Apparently, Spokane, Washington adapted this song as their anthem so that’s kinda neat. But I’m glad your dad found some joy watching this video and I’m grateful. Thank you. 🙏
This has quickly become one of my favorite songs. I’ve listened to it like four times atleast just today and it’s going in my favorite songs playlist. You are a gifted man. Great playing and amazing voice.
Kyle, that's a real old one. I remember hearing that when I was a kid. Off of an oldie. 78. Was never able to get all the words. Thanks a bunch. By the way, a real good job.
Indeed, it is. Feels like a forgotten tune, kind of but I love it because it’s almost relatable. Glad I could help you reminisce the golden years of music as well as our country.
That’s really cool! I really love these old folk/slave songs and love playing them for folks to maybe help stabilize them a bit. It sure helps to stabilize me. 🙌🙏🪕
Kyle, that was wonderful! I have subscribed to your amazing channel, too! My Auntie Helen taught us that song, when we were kids! Thanks for sharing it and bringing back precious memories! Peace, Charles
Oh wow that is awesome! I’m glad I could bring back some good memories. I just subscribed to your amazing, channel as well. Your voice reminds me of Johnny Cash a little bit.
Thanks! I’m not sure if Harry McClintock is the original songwriter, but he is the oldest recording I could find so these are his verses as far as I know.
@@kylewood4852 The Wikipedia page state's McClintock could be an originator. A variety of verses there, too. Ultimately, it comes from a time before ASCAP and the creative control imposed by 20th century music industry. Perhaps the "'Lazy' Larry" persona was a packaging to sell records, conveniently losing trace of the real performer? Anyway, loved your version and you got me eyeballing my neglected gourd for the warm sound quality it can produce. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallelujah,_I%27m_a_Bum
@@tedscarlett how very interesting. Harry’s version does have Jesus in it and I know they’re always trying to put down Jesus or silence the name anyway so who knows. But yeah, you should definitely show that gourd some love if the skinhead on it is still good and has tension.
i don't really understand how to do shorts or anything but I definitely played this so loud that the neighbors called the cops lol, I tried to record the moment with your song in it but whatever. Love your style brother. God bless
Da fk... He sings it just like it sounds in the original recording... I swear I could hear the "Pops and white noise" from the record lol Great performance, and I see Big Rock Candy Mountain is next... Thought I was the only one in the world with that on their playlist
Hi, Kile. I love this song and it sounds simple and fum to play. Could you tell us what tuning your in and the chord shapes you're doing? Thank you so much and keep it up
Hey thank you much and yes of course. I’m down tuned at C G C E G and the chords are open G, D7, and C. If you use these chords in standard tuning, then all you would have to do is down tune. Thanks so much for tuning in I appreciate that 🪕
I reside in upper Washington near the North Cascades. Lots of times I do fish after the video. But it’s also more peaceful and away from the city folk. Sanctuary states are too rowdy for me.
It’s a gourd 5 string banjo. What you see here is an Americanized version of the African instrument known as akonting. The akonting is what would later be known as the banjo after the slaves brought their native instruments to the states.
Man , This song , particularly, the way you do it is Pure magic. Much respect. Thank you for putting this out in the world. My grandparents always dropped the word bum on my brother and I , and it always made us laugh. Great tune .
Ha ha that’s funny. My grandpa did that to me too. But no problem and there will be much more where that came from and thank you much for the kind words. 🪕🙌
Your vocals have a good old-time feeling to them. Your gourd banjo is inspiring me to get mine out again. Perhaps some Buell Kazee songs are in order!
Thank you much Ethan! Yes you definitely should bring out the gourd again. It plays guitar songs quite well.
