- 1977 Harley Dvidson FXS Lowrider. Probably the lowest production number in existance is it's original paint "as sold new" condition. Harley made an original run of 250 of these in mid 1977. Each Harley dealer got ONE. They were initially a promotional item. Harley then went into production when they found out the FXS was a "hit"
That era of bike is why I fell in love with Harleys.
This is one of my favorite Harleys. I love all the Low Riders through the years!
Well done. I enjoyed your video and your enthusiasm for originality is more than a little infectious. The moment I laid eyes on a Lowrider I knew I had to own one. I was 20 years old and Harleys of any kind were very thin on the ground in Australia at that time. We were well into 1978 before I saw the Lowrider on the road but I was hooked. It took me about 12 months to save a deposit for a 1980 model silver and black 1340, which was delivered in October '79. Since then I've owned two Lowriders. I'm just about to secure a current release 1690 twin cam which is not quite the same as this old shovel but these days I'm happy to enjoy the reliability that comes with owning a modern bike and the nostalgia that it invokes by sticking to the lines of the original '77 machine.
+Hiwheelman the new machines so I hear are much more reliable, and certainly faster. Doesn't give you the same feeling in the gut though
there's something about older bikes.they're just cool as standard(stock)

I own one. I purchased it new. It is no longer totally stock but I have all the stock parts that were replaced (except tires and the rear rotor). It's later in the model year the the one you show in the video. I would let it go under the right circumstances.
Makes me excited to start mine. My father in law gave me a 77fxs had been sitting in his shop

Oil tank rubber is a 5/16", instead of 1/4". Threads on the frame were no good. Otherwise, she is perfect. That gives me an AMCA rating of 97 points, not bad.

I had one of those bikes, and except for persistent electrical problems, and excessive exhaust heat that burned through the timing cover, I loved it. The only thing mine had that your's doesn't was a short sissy bar with a small attached leather bag.. All the cases, rocker box covers etc had a gray coating that I hadn't seen before and haven't seen since. It was one sexy machine! ☮✌
1977 was the very 1st year Lowrider. This one was the 57th one made

Not to give you a hard time (the bike is gorgeous) but you can’t really call it “original” when in fact it’s more of a “parts bike” (although a very nice one!). The frame and motor are really the only “57th” bike. Thanks for letting me have my say.

I remember that color scheme for that bike.. one of my favorite colors ( other than black and chrome).. was a bad ass looking bike

That is the original oil cooler. They did not say Harley Davidson (by the catalog) on them until 1979. I have had some original paint 1978's with the oil cooler sticker. Often, company's, including Harley, will add small items such as this without waiting for a new year or catalog.
The carb I used is a -80. Same carb, but different part number because of the jetting which had been changed due to a different air cleaner. So I need the right sticker for the carburetor also.
Harley part number for the kickstand / primary rubber is 50100-70. I am in need of a primary kick stand rubber. The primary I used for this was NOS and thus never had one on it.
I've never had a Confederate. I've seen pictures, never any factory documentation. I bought my 1st bike in 1981, I was 19. SO I was a bit young to see new 1977's on the floor. Prior to 1981, my knowledge is from having owned in excess of 10,000 plus machines.

sounds like maybe you had an FXE, FXS models always had forward pegs. The VIN number is also the production number on any motor vehicle I am aware of
I know it’s not completely possible to compare the old to the new, but I have one if the 2020 FXST’s, and it reminds me of the older bikes like the Super Glides or Low Riders. I love the brushed finishes and the simplicity of a bare bones motorcycle. Maybe I’ll finally get me an old one someday. Maybe my grandson inherit an “old school” 2020 Softail someday.

I met a guy here in Mount Pearl Newfoundland, Canada who has one. He bought it new in 1977. He says it was one of very few brought into Canada which makes it even more rare as its speedometer is registered in kilometres. The bike is near mint and he only has around 40k kilometres (25 k miles) on it. I'll never forget the first time I saw it. Couldn't believe what I seen.

Only thing I dislike about the Low Riders, is the tiny pink wire under the dashboard. If you own a low rider , you know why.
thanks! You'd have to contact Harley's historical department and see if they have any records of VIN production. no one (that I now of) makes the frame tag, rather illegal to do so. The tag is a Federal Label.

My Mom bought my Dad one of these back in '76 and about 12 or so years later I bought it from him. I became paralyzed in '03 so I listed it on ebay. I got $14,6k for it while folks online in the scooter forums said it was worth $7-8k tops with one of them contacting me wanting to buy it. It's not worth any money but he wanted he wanted to buy it bad, lol.
I remember reading where Willie said this bike saved Harley Davidson & enabled them to buy it back from AMF. I'm no aficionado only relaying what I read.
Why did sell for so much. It had 3900 miles on it, original GOODYEAR tires. Only thing on the bike that was replaced was batteries. The case you point out being new on left side had a little wear mark about an inch long on it.
My Dad added a chrome battery cover & the little sissy bar on back with a little leather pouch ( for paperwork, etc. ) & a different muffler. The front pipe coming out of the head was discolored down to about the highway peg.
We lived in Kansas & some friends & him took a tour of the Southwest. That's actually where most of the miles came from. He also jacked up his back & riding it made it flair up so it only came out of the garage 1-3 times a summer.
I think I still have the matching helmet for it somewhere, a little half fairing windshield & a little oil cooler cover. You could call the cover NOS except I took it out of the plastic not knowing. It still has the instructions inside.
And a whole bunch of paraphernalia, HD accessory book, etc.
The bike went to a collector in Japan.

HuntingHarleys The only way I could have kept it & enjoyed it was if I were to do a bunch of modifications to it and there was NO way I was gonna do anything to the bike.
The fact it never got rode kind of snowballed. I was an OTR driver so after I bought it, it stayed it the same spot for another 10 or so years before I finally picked it up. I'd call my Dad & tell him I was coming through & he'd fire it up & check everything out ahead of time for me.
I just discovered this video.... phenomenal all around. I want one of these to put in my living room to never ride, and a second one just to ride!
the factory carb is excellent, you simply adjust them properly
FXDS models are not very desirable. roughly $5000-7000

No. I baught it from my aunt. My uncle had it and passed away 2 years ago. He sure loved that bike and I can see why. Rides great.
They made somewhere between 13,000 and 23,000 1977 FXS's, which for an AMF is a low production. I've had around 50-100 in the past 4 years, and roughly 10 plus I put back to original paint. it was a very popular machine, Harley's best seller for 77 and 78

Yeah, your right. I had to look at some old pics, there I am with forward pegs. In 83 I changed mine for forward controls. I forgot it came with just hiway pegs. Bought mine new in 77 for $5100. I hear there were only 3742 made in 77, and when I look at my VIN I see that I was 1181 in the line. Still have the original paint, but considering that I've been all over the States and Canada, its not in bad shape...its been my best buddy.
One of the nicest looking '77's I've seen to date. Currently restoring my '77 but can't find any information regarding VIN production runs regarding where it lies in relationship to begining/end but it does have a 6-77 production date. Where can I find VIN production information and where could I find a vendor that reproduces the foil ID tag found on the right down tube?
What does it take to create a motorcycle retail center? How much? And is it even worth it,to have a place with a showroom?

Requires financing. Not sure how much the banks would require today. I looked into that in 1990. They wanted a minimum of 5 million cash in the bank then before they'd finance you. People are seldom willing to consign at a wholesale price. They want retail plus. Hard to sell a motorcycle for 10k that someone can buy off Craigslist for 5k

I think Shovel heads have hit bottom, from now on they will increase in value. Buy them while you can I did.

These were great bikes. Always a little aggravating keeping clutch adjusted. With that said, all I did was relocate ignition switch and horn and rode the hound out of it! Thanks for all your videos.
@savagecycle Wrong!!!! shovels never came with dumper pad on the primary. the kick stand does not even touch the primary

thanks, a buddy of mine Dan did all the mechanic work. I just found the bike and spent two years chasing down all the original parts to make it the machine you see here. It took purchasing an additional 11 machines and "stealing" the parts off them to make this machine this nice.
Shovels are cool original arent they , but man hard to live with the carb, Shovels rule!
I have a '77 FXS OP Low Rider with stock exhaust, points cover, ham can , bars, seat, spoked wheels, etc., and a new set of Goodyear A/T's for it. Tank paint is excellent, fenders are fair. Even has the factory alarm. I really want to cosmetically restore the bike, the original painted surfaces on the engine and other areas look tired over time. I also want to repaint the fenders, but leave the near perfect OP tank. What are your ideas on this plan? I want it for a special rider of my own, as back in "77 I couldn't afford one.
This bike I saved OP cases, frame, swing arm, the rest came from parts I found or taken from another FXS. Do the same

Thought the e start models that year were FXEs..no?of course had kick start also
The narrow glide models at this time were FXE, FXEF, and FXS. The FXE in 77 did not have forward foot pegs, stock. The FXEF and FXS did. Also, the FXE and FXEF had bare aluminum coloration on the power train unlike the machine in the video; IE they were the cheaper models. The FXE could be made into a kick start, but only came electric start. The FXEF and FXS were both kick and electric start from the factory.
Sweet bike there. I bought and still have a 1977 FXE. It came with electric start as well as kick start standard equipment. My buddy bought his Low Rider later in 1977 when they first came out. They were electric and kick start standard equipment also.
On the FXE, kick start was optional, more $. Your dealer tag or invoice would tell the tale.
I didn't custom order the bike so it must have been included in the floor model I ended up buying. I sure am glad I have it because I love kick starting this thing. Just some kind of satisfaction to it, you know.
dealer's at this time (as in when have they not really) loved taking on little extras and charging money for it. Often, the buyer was not aware that the bike they bought even had an extra or they paid money for it. An example, ALL HD's in this time period came from the factory with ONE mirror. Nearly all, (hard to say for sure ALL) were sold by the dealer with TWO mirror's. HD made the dealer buy the extra, the dealer passed on the cost to the buyer. In an area where kick starts were popular, it would of been normal practice to either order with, or put on prior to sale, and charge the extra $
The oil tank stick, according to the Harley parts book, is part number 66042-79. Thus, according to Harley, the stickers did not come out until 1979.

The entire machine was original nothing repainted, re plated or restored. I used a lot of NOS or high end original parts on that bike. It took 2 years and parts taken from over 11 machines to complete it. It is the nicest one I know of and the 57th one off the line, 1st one sold in California. Each dealer got ONE when these 1st came out, 250 were initially made and were meant for dealer display.

condition and original paint, everything depends on it and miles. This was a frame up mechanical restoration, all original paint and tons of NOS parts used, not to mention #57. The 1st FX was made in 1971. The 1st Lowrider came out mid 77. The DYNA series is a totally different motorcycle.
No belt drive? I thought from 72 to 77 they were belt driven
no, belt was 1st offered in 1980, and only on the Sturgis. Belt drive was not offered on all models until 1991
