Hi Philip and thank you. The XF has been a great car, so I was pleased that my Father in law bought it from me, at least I still get to drive it. He has been thinking of selling it due to the London ULEZ, but he doesn't have to go into the zone to often, so I am trying to persuade him otherwise. Take care, Jeff
Hi Geoff and thank you. As I mentioned in the video, I'm not a mechanic, but learn a lot from my mistakes. If it solves the problem then I'm happy and enjoy doing it. Best of luck with your one. Take care, Jeff
Jeff Very enjoyable video I love all car videos more you do the better these new cars today are so cramped you have to strip most of the engine down just to change a hose well done Jeff you have done a first class repair Phil in stoke 😂
Hi Phil and thank you you very much. Had the problem been any lower down, I probably wouldn't have been able to get to it. I am trying to persuade my Father in law not to sell the XF, he only wants to sell it because of the London ULEZ. He doesn't go into the zone that often, so hopefully he will keep it. Take care, Jeff
Thank you very much Paul. Yes it's a great car, so was pleased when my Father in law bought it off of me. It's great to still have it in the family. Take care, Jeff
had mine booked in for a leak test next week, watched this video and thought I'd give it a try, and I have the same problem, part on the way, nice one jeff saved me a good few quid
Hi Kev and thanks for watching. I'm so glad it's helped you. I am no mechanic, but enjoy tinkering it's so satisfying if it gets sorted. I've got to try and do a DPF clean in a couple of weeks, we'll see how that goes. Take care, Jeff
I missed my appointment last week with the garage, glad I did, I had a problem with my DPF, I took it off and cleaned it a few times, but after a couple of miles says full again turned out to be an air leak in the throttle body might be worth checking, mine was leaking from the bit that looks like it comes apart, similar to the thermostat housing problem, got a new one and had no problems since, thanks again Kev @@DiecastPowderCoating
Thanks Adam, if the problem was further down I probably wouldn't have done it. Still try to sort my son's rear lights out. MOT on Monday and running out of time. Take care, Jeff
Thanks for watching, certainly worth doing it yourself. Got some big issues with it at the moment. I have tried all sorts, but still have a restricted performance light. It's my Father in law's car now, but I would like to get to the bottom of it. I suspect an inlet manifold leak. Take care, Jeff
Thanks Benno, we managed to get the actual unit for £18 brand new. Obviously aftermarket, but God knows what that would have been at Jaguar. The Jag has been fine and not used any coolant. Next problem is my son's car. I took it for an MOT today after spending all day getting the brake lights to work, yesterday. That turned out to be the least of my problems. 6 major faults and ten advisories. I've got parts for the major problems, but should cancel out some of the advisories. Take care, Jeff
Hi, Yes I don't know why they use plastic either. I had a Rover 75 a few years ago and that also had a plastic three way pipe in the middle of the V. That gave out on the motorway which ended up being an expensive fix Take care, Jeff
Hi Dave, yes the flap did move freely, but I couldn't believe how much soot was in there. I know it is a thing that needs to be cleaned from time to time, but never got round to doing it until now. Take care, Jeff
Hi Jeff , Not the best of day's to work on a car, the end of August and the start of September was very hot . I bet the Jaguar is running well and soon you will be on your son's VW . Don't over do it mate ,catch you soon take care 🚗👍
Hi Shaun, thanks very much, yes it was too hot for me and Jenny. The Jaguar is running great at the moment. I took my son's car for MOT today. I wish they had given me a list of what was right with it. There are about five major faults and about 10 advisories. Mainly suspension and anti roll bars. The other things I can get on with throughout the year. I have spent so much time with other people's problems, I can't get on with the moped. Take care Jeff
Wow absolutely fantastic to a very tricky job well done Jeff I've got a leak on my car but there is no trace of a leak anywhere am topping it up every day 👍👍👍👍
Hi Alan and thank you. After I repaired the leaking header tank, I thought that was it, but my Father in law was still topping up a bit. Over a couple of months it got so bad that he was putting 2 litres in on a two mile trip, but nothing coming out underneath. One day he started the engine and I could see it pouring out of the box I replaced. Thank god its not using any more coolant. I hope that you find out where your leak is coming from. Take care, Jeff
I got this problem had a pressure test other day and pointed to this flange coolant outlet I could see the coolant went the flange sits also with your flange did you get the 2 Seals with it ? And did you use the old rubber O ring for the oil cooler ?
Hi Lee, yes the first problem was that the header tank was leaking, so I replaced that. It was where the small pipe at the top of the tank pushes on, the plastic part had snapped. A few weeks later my father in law said that he was losing lots of coolant and topping up every day. That turned out to be the so called thermostat housing under the throttle body. That had pretty much split along it's seam. Take care, Jeff
Hi Charlie, I didn't really think about the manifold, just try and get the car back on the road ASAP. If it was my car, I may have gone a bit further. Take care, Jeff
I am sorry I haven't got that far down. The car is now my father in laws. He is holiday for three months and I have a lot of things to do on in mainly neglected things. I have to tackle the rear pads, the low fuel warning light is on again plus the DPF filter. If I have to do something with the exhaust, I will find out about the flange gasket. Take care, Jeff
Thanks for the video it was great to give us the confidence to take the job on myself however, 😬 Could you let people know you snapped the small brittle air pipe off the first bit you took off as a warning to anyone following your video, I did the exact same thing not realising you snapped it at first 😂
Hi Adam and thanks for watching. As I mentioned I am no mechanic, but I love solving problems and tinkering. I'm sorry I didn't mention about the little pipe, everything is so brittle. As I think I mentioned it is my father in law's car although in the earlier videos it was mine. He tends to drive with the radio full blast and can never hear any problems until it's too late. I think he has got a cracked inlet manifold, which would take a couple of days and he has a leaking fuel tank if he fills it up over half. I think the seam has split somehow. I do repairs as a hobby, so along with work and my other videos I just don't have time to do his car. Take care, Jeff
@DiecastPowderCoating all pipes are secure, however noticed a few bolts not torqued properly, my manifold was replaced in September, and since then been having coolant issues, pipes have not been properly torqued, was easy enough to loosen without much resistance. Just wandering why there's coolant around the oil filter.
Thanks for this video! In the middle of the same job now on my XFS. Having some trouble removing the egr pipes into the throttle body, worried about breaking the clips. Whats the best way to loosen the clips to release the pipes?
Hi Iren, those clips are a lot stronger than they look. I generally use a flat head screwdriver under the middle of them and they will just unclip. When you put them back on, line the pipes up and put the clip over the joint. Then use some large pliers and you will see how they clip back over themselves. I hope that helps a bit. Take care, Jeff
Thanks for sharing, very informative, mine has failed too and planning to do it this weekend, any idea on how long it took you dismantle it and replace the new housing?
Hi Reg and thank you for watching the video. I think I did it over two days, but that was only because I had loads of other things to do. I would think a mechanic could probably do it in a couple of hours, but I think I would give yourself three hours. Just plod on and enjoy doing it. Let me know if you have any problems and please let me know how you get on. Take care, Jeff
Hi Jeff, finally decided to and finished installing the new housing unit, blow dry the excess coolant around the oil filter, cleaned the butter fly piece that goes into the manifolds, topped up with 1 litre coolant, started the car, waited for a few mins, checked the oil filter area and there was another pool of coolant. Don't know if it was fresh coolant or from old one, but my coolant light came on.
@reginaldigweike4002 Hi Reg, I wasn't able to dry up all the coolant in the oil filter area, so hopefully it is what was left around that area. I seemed to remember I put several litres of water in to start with and when it had settled I sucked about two litres out and replaced it with concentrate coolant. Hopefully it will stabilise once it ash settled down. Take care, Jeff
@DiecastPowderCoating thanks Jeff, I will be buying a lot more coolant today to fill it up, left the engine cover off to monitor it and let the excess coolant dry off.
Hi, I haven't looked at it for sometime as it is my Father in law's, but from what I remember there is a plastic screw on or near the filler tank. You could just remove the filter lid until the bubbles stop and just keep topping it up. Take care, Jeff
THERMOSTAT HOUSING WATER OUTLET/JDE38234 PIPE FOR JAGUAR TYPE XF XJ 2.7 3.0 I Mike, I don't know if it will open the link, but it was under £20. I hope it helps.

Thanks Jeff. To help others, the fix is identical on a 2010 Jaguar XJ 3.0d x351 too.
