- The Surprising Results: Homegrown vs. Purchased Sweet Potato Slips
In this 2023 sweet potato harvest video, we compare the results we got from growing sweet potatoes from sweet potato slips we purchased vs sweet potato slips we grew at home.
The beauregard sweet potatoes are one of our favorite varieties. It is a delicious sweet potato that this also a strong producer for us. This season we grew these sweet potatoes in 17 gallon food safe plastic containers, and we really wanted to know which type of slip would perform better for us.
So, we planted two containers (3 slips each) of home grown sweet potato slips, and 2 containers of the store bought sweet potato slips. This sweet potato harvest 2023 video focuses on the results we got, and I think there is a winner from this limited experiment, but you will have to watch the zone 5 gardening harvest video to find out what that result is.
One thing I know, our family is going to benefit from this delicious harvest, and I am quite happy with the results, though I am also sure we can grow bigger sweet potatoes next year!
Thank you so much for watching this garden harvest video!

Interesting experiment!!
Delicious experiment! :)
❤This was awesome ❤
Nice potatoes❤
Thank you!
I need to try growing sweet potatoes.
Absolutely, if you have the space!
Stinging Nettle is good for internal bleeding. Thanks for sharing
Well done loyal and faithful servant that Beauregard sweet potatoes. Happy Fall Days 😅
Nice harvest, I’ve always grown my own slips (I’m too cheap to buy slips) and always have a decent harvest. I’ll be pulling some of my Purple sweet potatoes next week from a 3x3 raised bed and of the Garnet (orange flesh) so they are cured for Thanksgiving dinner. I do use the soil method to start slips. Happy Gardening from Southern California.
Hey , whatever it's best and a must . Southeast Texas here , i always grow my own slips , this year was really bad with the heat we had , yes i know they love heat but this was extreme tho ! Another thing i learn , sweet potatoes don't like well fertilizer soil , they love poor soil , why ? It beats me ..
Awesome harvest 😊
I've found the same with growing slips in soil vs water. Plus the ones grown in soil usually already have roots.
Just dug mine a couple of days ago - not nearly the size that you grew. But I'm still happy with them.
Nice harvest! That one really did look like a boomerang LOL I got stung by stinging nettle today while clearing out our pinkeye purple hull containers even though I had my garden gloves on. I've never seen it all over the place like it was this year, they always fool me at 1st when winter is over, & I'm desperate to see what strawberry plants overwintered, I end up treating them like strawberry plants until they get big enough to differentiate it. I also end up with mullein & grapevines in my yard every year although I've never planted them out.
I remember you had grown stokes purple sweet potato at one point too.I love purple stokes sweet potato but cant find any sources locally. Do you have slips or potatoes available for sale? They no longer sell directly from the website unfortunately.
I definitely prefer sweet potato over white potato any day. I love me some sweet potato hash or a fully loaded sweet potato next paired with a nice medium rare ribeye steak. I don't have a backyard yet but I'm going to try to grow purslane inside of my apartment? Is that possible??
Do you fertilize your potatoes and sweet potatoes during the growing year.
Yes we typically add bone meal twice over the course of their growing, and we make sure they are well fertilized at time of planting.
