- This week’s private investigator training video explains step-by-step how to (sometimes) trace a license plate to find the owner’s name and address using only free, Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), online resources so you can do this from the privacy of your own home!
1. Verify the tag (license plate) really belongs to the vehicle you see it on. Easy.
2. Turn the tag into a VIN (vehicle identification number). Easy.
3. Turn the VIN into a name and/ address. Harder, but it can sometimes be done.
Follow the video to lean exactly how to run a license plate without a permissible purpose and no follow-up audit by the Department of Motor Vehicles!

Quite good! Thatsthem did not return any info for me (I searched my VIN and have the same car for 7 years), everything else works. I feel like a spy 🕵️♀️ Thanks to you, I now run a background check on everyone. I checked a doctor I’m considering going to and he only had 1 speeding ticket from 18 years ago and no other court cases and a 900k house paid off, looks like a solid dude, I now feel comfortable being his patient.

Can one just get the plate or vin information and to the the DMV for public records?
This was pretty great! This is a good tool to stick in the filing cabinet, should the need ever arise. Neat tie-in with the flag!

Thanks Larry, how could I go about searching for traffic stops or violations that occur out of the individual’s county/state? I have the DOB, plate #, VIN, even SSN.
The easiest way is to run the person's driving history record (sometimes called an abstract) through the state DMV that his or her license is issued through. You'll see all traffic violation convictions back for about 36 months regardless of location/state.
Alternatively, you can build an address history on the individual including every county he or she lived or worked in for the last 7 years or so then search county by county.
@@ShadowAnyone I just lately realized that what you described here is exactly why background check companies ask for our addresses in the past 7 years.

I ran the VIN and is not showing anything

What you're asking is about "skip tracing". That's finding someone and there are many, many legal ways to do that depending on the information you have to start with.
If all you have is a license plate number, here’s one thing you can do…
Write a letter to the truck owner.
Put it in an envelope with your return address and a first class stamp on it, but don’t seal the envelope.
Write a letter to your state Department of Motor Vehicles asking them to forward your letter to the truck owner.
Because the letter to the truck owner is unsealed, the DMV can review what you’ve written and insure the forward request is for legitimate purposes.
There’s a good chance they will forward your letter to the truck owner.

Yes, you can use this process with only a VIN.

Certain states like Pennsylvania you won't find diddly because of the states information acts, California is another one. I don't know all states but there are a few you can't get anything from.

I usually explain it like this… I could make my own furniture, but by time I buy the supplies and tools, then trying to make a clean cut, connect a good right angle and stain or finish the item… well, it takes more time, money and effort than it’s worth to me. So I just go buy my furniture from a place that makes it the right.
The same with investigations. A lot can be done by any private citizen, but the time, money and effort to learn the sources and methods, tricks and traps may not be worth it.
