People don’t talk about plant “duds” enough. My first Hoya krimson queen did nothing. I’ve had it for 5 years and it looks almost exactly the same. I purchased a second one thinking I would make the first fuller, but I never actually put them together because the second one grew like crazy! I’ve had it for maybe two years and it is easily four times the size it once was. I treat them the same… I swear the first was just a dud.

I just watched a video by Betsy Begonia about mites and some specifically feed on new growth...so the plant doesn't die, but it also doesn't grow...the mites are also microscopic! Just something to consider.
I must have a dud then... 🙈

More and More I’m returning to such a vast variety of snake plants for my home. They are available in so many colors, shapes, and sizes. They can thrive on neglect and only die with too much water. I’ve found my genre of houseplants!
I'm with you! I'd rather have ordinary low-maintenance plants that are inexpensive and easily replaced (which are still beautiful!) than trendy fussy plants! Took me a while to figure that out but I'm living my best houseplant life now 😆
most of my snake plants have died, and I was careful about the watering... is there something else I don't know about for keeping them healthy?
@@aprilshowers1037 for me, thorough but infrequent watering (like, only every 3-4 weeks or so), and lots of light does the trick.
@@heatherdegreeff1092 Saaame. I just don’t have time for the fussy ones! Figuring that out has made made the hobby way more fun for me. If the plant is annoying me more than I’m enjoying it, then it’s gone lol.
I can usually find a more common plant with similar qualities to a rare one I’ve fallen for 😊
The more I hear about these rare plants the more I am happy with my happy Pothos
I like the old stand bys, pothos,snake plants, rubber trees, spider plants ect. I have a geogenath because I love the leaves, we will see how it dose. In my opinion people don't stop to think about the care involved in caring for some of the plants out there. I stay away from the more" exotic" ones simply because I don't not have the time, space or desire to care for them. As you mature in you plant hobby you do learn what you truly love and what is just not for you, thank you for this video.
I can’t keep a pothos alive for the life of me yet I’m great with roses, orchids, hibiscus 😂😂😂😂
I have to do the “self check” when it comes to plant purchasing. Do I want to take care of this? Where will I put it? How big will it get? Is it prone to bugs?
I love the macrophylla, and the Peru. The standelayana is on my “iffy” list cuz it’s very thirsty. I do regret my string of hearts. I think the pot is too big and it’s sparse on top but super long. Now the variegated SOH I love. Just not the regular one.

When I got really into plants my whole wish list got really huge because of following plantfluencers, I couldn’t afford any of them otherwise I would have been influenced to buy all of them 😂

I regret almost all peperomias that I have purchased except my string of turtles. It’s so happy, it grows like crazy, super vivid patterns. I’ve had it three years and I still I love it. I absolutely hated and regret purchasing an alocasia silver dragon. I only purchase plants I enjoy now not hype plants. I only buy plants that are full unless they are trades, I don’t like the look of sparse pots or singular leaves.
I now live in Missouri and it’s been interesting which plants did better in Washington and Colorado vs here.
Peperomias are so difficult for me!!

Damn I got the silver dragon a few months ago and it's doing so well, its quickly becoming my favorite plant. I live in WA and it seems to like the climate.
@@meowk5812 I got mine in Seattle 3 years ago? when I lived there. I had it barely two months before I straight up killed the plant. I have only killed two other plants in my plant journey. I spent a lot of money on it too. I will probably never buy another alocasia. I bought purely because it was rare. I don’t even like the way most of them look. Lesson learned. 😅
@@evieolan5203 once I stopped watering my peperomias... They have thrived. So now i only buy plants that I can go at least three weeks without watering. This includes alocasia's go figure. Haha.
I love my variegated string of hearts! It grows so quickly and I love seeing the little leaves come out. Some leaves are more variegated than others and it’s a fun guessing game
For your anthurium put sphagnum moss around the base on top of the soil i promise you it'll grow more leaves. I do this with all of my anthurium with great success.
This. There’s sooo much stem sticking out that could be producing big nice roots that will help the plant grow. Cover that stem in moss and keep it moist.
Plant I was influenced to buy that I wish I didn't have, but was actually thriving (before deer destroyed it).... Monstera deliciosa... LOL ... and I got a Fiddle Leaf because I thought "surely it isn't that bad!" and it is also thriving... but I have discovered that I really don't like big leaves that much. They are fine outside, but inside I want little leaves HAHA

Calatheas were influenced for me and I cannot make them live for the life of me. I’m a chronic under waterer and have stopped buying plants that require moist soil consistently lol. I was able to keep a few alive for awhile but then I got spider mites because of them too and was so fed up. I was able to make a rattlesnake live for I think a year or a little over it and it was my favourite but then I moved and it retaliated and died lol. I have a makoyana right now and it was thriving for a bit in the colder months but now that it’s summer and my apartment is very hot… she’s struggling. I think she might be one of my last calatheas for awhile when she inevitably dies lol. I love how beautiful they are but they’re so high maintenance imo and I hate how they’re spider mite magnets… I had so many infestations when I had calatheas and since I’ve only had one I haven’t had any pest issues so far *knock on wood*.
My calathea medallion was doing so poorly then it got spider mites. I cut off all the leaves and relocated it to spot that has less light and I now keep the soil more moist. Its doing very well. It really does like soil to be more moist

Bought 3 Allocaisia Polly - adore the leaves, but every one slowly died leaf by leaf - destroyed me ! Had a string of hearts and hated the tangly thin stems so will never get another one ! Love most Calathea but not wanting any plant I need to stick in a greenhouse - I have a few hardy ones and although I would love more, I refuse to go there again ! 🌿💚
Okay but the Pollys do that though! I totally get what you mean about watching the leaves go--it's painful. But even if it goes down to a stump, give it a few months (of summer growing season) and it will come back. I have two... one dropped every single leaf, but it's now putting out new shoots after about 3 months of dormancy. The other dropped all but two leaves, and it sat like that for a couple of months and just put out a MONSTER new leaf. So be patient! They just have dormancy cycles!

I grew my Melanochrysum from a wet stick. It has 4 leaves and it is absolutely beautiful. No runners, elongated leaves, and growing at a decent rate. He is sitting in a humidity fill grow light cabinet.
The string of turtles lose their patterning when it gets exposed to too much light. I've moved it a few times to find a darker spot for it and it gives me nice vivid patterns now :)
The Hoya Krimson Princess. I have had mine for over a year and it reverted. Other people have such gorgeous ones but mine will not grow.
My macrophylla is amazing. It is in an East Facing window sill and on a trellis and it grows like crazy!

For the regale, they are really thirsty and they like high light and humidity and they are heavy feeders. I have one in open air that does pretty well but it’s in self watering pon. It usually keeps two leaves at once. Maybe try putting yours in your greenhouse once that’s ready? Your probably under watering it to be honest. Anthurium are sooooo thirsty. Yours really doesn’t look that bad to be honest.

Standleyana is one of my easy going, favorite plants. I've got so many props from it, once I knew how it worked! I've got both the albo, and the aurea versions. I've got a larger plant, about 2/3 feet high, and yes, some runners, but I cut and prop those, once they developed nodes! ❤️🍀
I bought a fittonia because it is “someone’s” favorite plant! Mine is no longer with me. Harli’s favorite plant is a syngonium, so I bought that, too. The syngonium is still alive, but I don’t like that it trails. I’ve also been given several plants that I’m just not into, but I just can’t get rid of them.
Ahhhh fittonia 😭 I too succumbed to buying one 😉 and it slowly petered away. Moved it to a dark corner of my windowsill a year ago for last rites and would you believe the single stem I had left thrives on - it’s a whole vine hanging over the side of the pot now 🤦🏾♀️😅
Depending what type of syngonium though, put it on a pole! I don’t like the way they look trailing either, but standing up they look much better. Leaf maturity too
And I literally just dropped off four meh plants at a plant market. Didn’t even try to trade, just left them at the “leave/take a cutting table” 😂 cuz just get them out of MY house pls & ty

my fittonia was BY FAR the most dramatic plant I owned. Within an hour it can wilt to the point of "death". You water it and it's back to full health. I honestly just let mine die because I was spiteful.

I love caring for plants that get really big so I genuinely love the philodendron melanochrysum, but I get that it's not for everyone.
Lol at Bekah dragging one of my favorite Hoyas 🤣 H. macrophylla/latifolia did nothing and slowly died for me when I first got it, so I absolutely get it. But! I finally figured her out, and she's just ahhhhhhh so pretty, and grows SO quickly. It needs way more water than I was giving it, loves being fed, wants really bright light and needs to climb. It's not exactly low maintenance but I love it. And she blooms for me, so that helps.
I'd honestly say string of pearls is one I was influenced to buy and is just so...meh. I love their little pom pom flowers, but literally everything else about growing it is annoying to me lol.
Edit: string of turtles, man. I think it belongs in terrariums, growing it out as a houseplant is so underwhelming.
My regale is a TWO leaf wonder! They are very slow growers but each new leaf is super rewarding. They are my first and one of my favorite anthurium.

I’ve heard you should plank your sting of turtles. I guess they like to climb and if you offer them that the leaves get bigger and the pattern in the leaves gets more defined. I haven’t tried it yet but I would love to with one of those natural tree bark planks
Mine hangs and has decently sized leaves and pattern. I keep a south window in St. Louis, MO. I find it doesn’t love to be water super often. They are creeping plants, they prefer shallow wide pots! :)
I don’t know how easy that would be as every time I move it a leaf falls off so trying to plank it 🤷♀️
@@0carinaofthyme hiii I’m in WI and new to string of plants…. I was wondering in the winter do you leave it in the window or pull it back? I was thinking of putting mine in a south window on the curtain rod but was worried about the cold 🤷♀️
@@sarah9314 it’s maybe a foot from the window. I have hangers placed in a few spots above the frame. I haven’t had any issues with cold damage it. I live in an old building with not the best sealing from the outside. I have had one severe storm where we were negative temps for a few days that I got nervous and pulled my plants back a little further a few years ago.

Love the honesty in this video🥰 I laughed the whole time and totally feel your pain. For me the Queen Anthurium is the bane of my existence!!
However, I have noticed when it comes to anthurium roots at the base of the plant they sprout when it’s surrounded with potting media. Its like they need to grow into something in order to push a baby out. 🤦🏻♀️ They’re so sassy!
ngl, I just like hearing people who are passionate about plants talk sh&t about plants. Super funny stuff. I don't care if you're talking about my favorites (M. peru & P. melanochrysum are 2 of mine), and I TOTALLY know what you're talking about. It's weird when people get upset about it...it's all love to me
From my experience hoyas just take some time to get comfortable with their new environment. Somewhere between 4 to 12 months to get use to your environment. Not all of them are like that but I do give hoyas there time to grow out.
Pink polka dot plant!! Omg that thing…I gave it more light, less light, more humidity, less humidity, and it was so leggy and got brown edges no matter what. I ended up trying to cut back & prop the leggy parts; they died. Then the rest of the plant died. Never again!
I also had a really hard time with my hoya macrophylla. It would randomly yellow and drop leaves and I was about to give up on it so I tried putting it in leca as a last minute attempt and it has completely turned around. It has given me its first new leaf in the entire time I've had it and it looks so healthy! Not sure what it is but every hoya I've struggled with has done really well in leca so I think it's worth a shot!
Absolutely agree on the Macrophylla, all my Hoya are super happy and growing, this one though is just slowly dying for no reason... String of Turtles was the first plant I ever killed, it did nothing for months and I started ignoring it, so eventually it just dried up, oh well... I enjoy the variegated String of Hearts though, I like the colors on it 😊
I just purchased the macrophylla variegated hoya so not sure if it will stay a fav or not. I must say I love my Peru! Thank you for the advice.

I’ve failed at the string of hearts and string of pearls. They looked great and grew lots for like 1/2 a year and then just decided to die on me. I’m debating whether or not I want to try propagating but I’m almost over them.
My favorite gene of plants is Hoya, but I do agree with you the house that thrive in my home are in a green house condition, the ones in the regular house condition don't really grow 🙃
That’s so funny! I agree completely. I never had a regale, I would replace the macrophylla with a black margin. And I would have disagreed about the string of turtles until about a month ago when they went to shit. I would also add the cercestes miribilis to this list.

I’m totally influenced and need a monstera d. I recently bought a plant thinking it was a ficus benjamini you know pretty easy care NO it’s a “china doll” planted in a group….she’s gorgouez obsessed sickening and finicky. now I’m soo nervous 😬 I kinda wish I didn’t buy it but kind of intrigued I’ll be hyped if goes well….Plants give adrenaline I swear
1. I still hunt for Perus every time I go to a big box store. They have my heart and probably always will.
2. We're in v different zones, but my macrophylla is doing very well in Southwest FL! It may be, like you said, conditions.
3. I JUST ordered a melanochrysum this morning from the Ecuagenera sale that ends today. Again, different area, so I have hope! ☺️
4. My regale only likes to have one damaged leaf at a time, too. Idk what's up with her. But I haven't had her for very long, either! Got her this year.
5. I've been away for a week and very unmotivated to water my plants, but they needed it, and this video and a few others have gotten me off my butt and watering my plants. So thanks! ♥️
Just got myself a standelyana last week and a baby leave just popped out two days ago. Wish me luck in making it thrive 😄
My regale has 3-4 leaves at a time, so it's not always a 1 leaf at a time plant, BUT all of my leaves are also always at least a little damaged... from literally nothing other than unfurling. It's annoying but I learned to live with her never being perfect :)

Girlll, I'm with you on this whole list. Especially hoyas bc the cooler varieties are so expensive and one node just grows into a stand and I'm like what am I suppose to do with like 6 random strands of hoya.
Also melanochrysum are the fussiest philos I've ever dealt with, they want a pole, amazing humidity, great light even though they climb so much and cutting them starts it back to square zero. Splendid are so much better
Is true with the melanocrysum my melano was very fuzzy even me giving it the best care that i ended up propagating it she die i was soo upset

Monsteras are an invasive species where I live (HI) so my deliciosa is actually one of the plants I regret buying!
3:50 I have an extremely difficult time propagating/rooting Monstera Karstenianum 'Peru'. I got 6 top cuttings using 3 different propagation methods after 2.5 months w/ rooting hormone and no signs of rooting. Other than that I've had no problems with it, It's a prolific grower from a 5 leaf plant to growing to the ceiling in under a year.
I traded a cutting of my P. Mayoi for a melanochrysum... it was stretched when I got it. So I chopped and proped... now I have 3 plants in one pot putting out baby leaves 🙃 I am fertilizing it to see if it helps with the tiny leaves 🤷♀️ tbh I won't be mad if it curls up and dies. 😆
I bombed out with one of the "string of" plants myself. I was greatly relieved to hear a couple of years later that yes, they are very persnickety. Now the fancy philodendrons and all the anthuriums struck me as too obviously hard to attempt, but string of pearls was supposed to be a succulent. Succulent from hell.

There just sooooo fussy i watered my string of pearls once in 3 months and it decided that was too much water and unalived itself
Mine always turned into the strings of death. I gave up.
me too with the strings, other people made them look easy to care for, but all my strings slowly died. ALL my indoor succulents did poorly for that matter. Only a few that I kept outside did well.. the ones that didn't get burned by the sun :/
Love this video! I get on the trend kick too. The only one I disagree with due to personal preference is the string of turtles. Mine is a very full pot and the leaves are bigger and the colors are vibrant. I have mine in a north east facing window so it gets direct morning light and it's in a warmer room in the house. Very cute turtles. I'm glad you mentioned the regale and melano. I've been wanting those but I don't live in Thailand so I think mine would end up unhappy.
The struggle is real! I love watching planty videos and seeing influencers plants on Instagram but man, I get envy and have gotta have them. I got into calathea first and couldn’t keep them alive and healthy and let most of them go or they died. I’m into Hoya now but I have them in my cabinets so you are right about light and humidity. I’ve got a few I’m looking at right now that are rare and that’s why I got them coz I couldn’t pass them up. I don’t love them but I just can’t get rid of them. I’m sad I fell for it. I’m working on my wish list and really looking at the ones I love and really want. Any tips and tricks on how to do that would be HUGELY appreciated. My husband and our house budget would also thank you 😘
my orbifolia is such a drama queen and soooo thirsty but definitely one of my favourites look-wise, just lights up my room.
My regale lives in leca & moss and is currently working on a third leaf. I don’t have any major issues with it aside from a small bacterial leaf spot on one leaf (super annoying) but thankfully it hasn’t gotten bigger or spread.
Monstera Peru and standeliana need rather stable support to climb, once they have that, they don't put out runners but grow up real nice. Mine ignored all the moss poles, but found other plants terracotta pots on higher shelves, and attached their very meaty aerial roots to them. Now they grow tight and happy, but I don't know what will happen once they run out of pots to climb.
I’m considering trying again with a plank… with the peru maybe haha

Regale is one of my favorites. It’s just not easy.
I 2as influenced by a couple other youtube experts to get a calathea. The only time it was ever happy when we had a family dinner and the house was filled with steam. I did not take seriously their need for humidity. I just thought they are pretty, interesting and non toxic but the humidity or lack there of led me to throwing it off the deck which I feel guilty about. Otherwise I have appreciated your down to earthiness Becca that is why I mostly focus on what you share
I've given up rhaphidophora. I've bought it twice and both times it slowly lost all of it's leaves. The second time around I revived it and it did okay for a while, but then it randomly croaked again! It was a relief when I finally let myself throw it away.
I struggle a lot with pepperomias so I never bought them again. For peru, yeah I agree they do produce runners but this happens if you dont give them enough sun.
They also hate direct sun because they will burn easily but overall they are also easy. I now planted it in the same pot as the adansonii and currently letting it climb on a coco fiber pole
There are some plants that I do regret buying but the two that come to mind are the Philodendron Birkin and Peperomia Quito. The first time I bought a birkin she was a starter and made sense. However, I tired everything that I’ve read to increase her white stripes - boost with low-level nitrogen fertilizer, propagate the ones that have some variegation, etc. It’s been over a year and still nothing. As for the peperomia quito, it stayed super small (got her as a starter too) and actually began to lose its vibrant color and became more dull. I had no idea why and I tried to research it, but I could find nothing
I'm with you on most of these, but I have to disagree about the regale! It does only put out 1-2 leaves at a time, but I love that it provides a big statement leaf in the back of my cabinet without taking up a whole shelf like some of the other large anthuriums would. And I love the shape of its sinus and lobes!

I bought that some people say are easy. But I always tell to myself that I dont have the same environment conditions they got for the plant to grow big and fast. And Im learning a lot from keep trying and finding out what they like. Sometimes I failed but atleast I tried and know better next time😁

Wildfern's love of the silver sword philodendron made me obsessed with it too and mine just absolutely hates my home conditions and the care it gets. R. decursiva has also been an ugly challenge I'm kinda over lol.
Yep, the Silver Sword. I got sucked in too. 4 inch pot, I think it grows stupid. I have moved it again next to a grow light hoping it will get bigger leaves
I have two silver swords. One thats the regular and a wide form one. I find that the wide form one (which i believe is the one Fern has) is a lot more giving, I only water it when the leaves curl. But my like regular form silver sword and I just do not get along. We are in a love hate relationship. Mostly hate. Lol
Decursiva is at the top of my hate list too ahaha it just shot out long runners regardless of the conditions I gave it. As for silver sword, I got one after seeing Fern's as well, and struggled with it for the first 6 months, then figured out it really just needs high humidity and a stake and it sizes up quite quickly!
omg hahah these are the exact 2 plants i thought of for my hate list. gave my decursiva away (was ready to throw it out the window) and ready to give away the silver sword as well. not necessarily fussy plants, just horrible growth patterns and all around unrewarding!
Will you try growing your strings over rocks in your greenhouse? I saw them growing like that in nature so they might be extremely happy like that
I think I may have an antherium, I thought it was an alocasia but it looks just like that & it also ONLY puts out a leaf at a time but watching it put out when it looks half dead then the beauty leaf :)
I don't hate my melanochrysum but I gave it something to climb, it climbed, the leaves stayed the same, I have yelled at it a lot, it never answers, it has now climbed past where the grow lights hit it, I need to take scissors to it and make propagations, I'm so bad at propagating, this sentence is a run-on, this sentence is like what growing a fucking melanochrysum is like.
That’s so funny! I have not got a melanochrysum because I’ve heard so much bad so I don’t n especially now. I love micans tho
My biggest regrets were the white fusion calathea, a top cutting of a monstera albo (I still have it but it just keeps pushing out pure white leaves that I have to keep cutting and it grows soooooo slowly. Meanwhile, my other albo was growing like crazy... until I chopped it), my philodendron pastazanum and plowmanii. I found out I don't like crawling plants like the last two. I wasn't influenced to buy any of these.. just found all these while browsing etsy. lol
Now I want a regale. I love a challenge
Mine are ferns, succulents kept indoors, anthuriums, calatheas (I'm down to just 2 right now, that are actually hanging in there), and my first and only cast iron plant! All these plants have done horribly with me. Oh also crotons, I've replaced so many over the years but my current one has lasted a longer time and is actually growing new leaves.
My anthurium regale is the same way. One leaf all the time. I wish mine would grow another too😂especially since rn the bottom half of mine is crunchy cause my humidifier broke in the grow tent
you get that pressure to have the cool pricey types
Hoya is definitely one of those that you can't skimp on the light. It won't play nice if its not getting maximum light all the time 😅 I sit them on the front porch as soon as the nights get above 50 in the direct sun in the south and they thrive. The rest of the year they just languish
I keep all my Hoyas I my south window, most are thriving and very happy!
I totally agree, they got to have good lighting and humidity. During spring and summer I was keeping mine outside too a year ago, until the morning sun got too hot and burned some leaves on them all. Now I keep them all under a good LED grow light next to a humidifier and they are all growing and doing well :)
I love my standleyana, my peru, my macrophylla (no runners and great growth) but my conditions are different than yours obviously. I love my melanochrysum, it was my first wishlist plant. Don't have a regale but haven't seen one I'd want bc I see so many one leafers. Hate string of anything's and only have seen one beautiful string of hearts from crazy plant guy. But I get it. My Gloriosum and pastazanum and sp Columbia were disappointments for me. I think everyone is influenced to buy plants and IG definitely influences me a lot. Oh, and my vittarifolium and pallidiflorum we're disappointments for me too. Great vid.
i like the string of turtles. mine grows like a weed but it get some direct light on my porch so it's probably that.
Hoya Bella, total waste of time and loads of frustration. Guessing from state of leaves that it got those weird (not spider) mites that the bellas get. (Heard from other plant tubers) None of my other plants got the pest, (thank goodness). It felt so good when I tossed that one in the outside bin, soil and all! Hoya non-Bella!!!! Fun video Becca!!! My monstera Peru looks like crap too! Put out one of those super long runners last fall, chopped up runner and put in prop box, and it’s still there! Pieces have done nothing, but have not rotted either....Has nodes, will wait a full year and then conclude they are “inactive” and bin them.

I love the String of Pearls. I have one that I bought at the beginning of the summer. It's lost a lot of its strings and I'm trying so hard to revive it and make it healthy. I don't know what I'm doing wrong so I need to do some research. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it. I love your turtles!!
I had a string of pearls that died with the first watering...I won't get another one😅
I liked her string of turtles, too. I've got one. I enjoy the cute little turtle shell shapes/coloring and vining nature.
String of pearls live beautifully in water! Get a wine bottle or something with a smaller mouth and let her grow! Make sure all the dirt is gone and put her in water and she will enjoy life again. My string of hearts are the same way. Most string plants can live successfully in water. Just make sure to change the water every couple of weeks. Keep the water as full as possible. You will grow some green algae if the bottle is clear and in a window, but it's still easy to clean and well worth the effort.
Haha, this is amusing, I agree with all of those! Maybe for different reasons, but all but the A Regale (which I don't have) have been pesty things for me lol! The Peru brought spidermites to my collection...nooooo!!! The standelyeana...just...disappointing somehow? I kind of like mine as it came back from the dead, but, just not that scintillating. String of turtles...killed it. Killed several. That puts you off lol! Melano - gorgeous!! Tiny. Needs the tropics!! Which is not here...
Great video! I agree with all your choices except I really love my string of turtles… I have a small pot full of turtle babies and I keep some growing in terrariums. They are an excellent terrarium plant and the leaves get so jewel-like in the high humidity of a terrarium! My Melanochrysum is huge pia too but I still believe in magic and someday I’ll make that lil b**** happy lol
I'm so glad I don't have money to spend on plants!! I'm sticking to Hoyas and I don't need the unique fancy ones!

Why don't you buy houseplants you genuinely like? Why is it an impulse buy that you feel you must get?
I don't care how rare or quirky my plants are. I get what I truly like and fits with my home.
Not hipsters though. A genuine hipster just does his or her own thing. The word "trend" is literally gross to them. No offense to the YT lady here, but if someone bought a plant solely because it was trendy then they may lack some uniqueness, character, or more on the basic side. If you liked a plant because the environment it thrives in is the same as your house environment, you liked the look of it, and it matches your style for plant care AND it happens to be trendy then it's alright to get the 🪴. Ultimately, anyone can get any plant they can buy and want to buy but a true hipster would not buy something based on trendiness level.
@@BryTheNiceGuy hipsters buy what's trendy before the masses deem it also trendy. Vinyl records, birkenstocks in 2014 etc etc. These are things they were all wearing and it's a continuation of an echo chamber.

More precisely, they do and get exactly what they want. And since each personality and mind is different, you'd end up with a lot of unique things and mannerisms or ideologies. If these people you've seen are buying plants because the hipsters in their lives are buying them then they are aspiring hipsters but haven't found their true characters yet.
i think standleyanas are easier to get in the UK, or I just got really lucky, bc I got a huge one (four vines rooted up a moss pole, maybe 2 feet tall, 17cm pot) for I think around £40 a few years ago! It's now probably 4 feet tall and very dense, puts out leaves with lovely variagation, and I've never had it produce a runner! It's sat in a west window, no extra humidity, and gets watered when it flops, honestly probably one of my easiest plants.
although I am struggling a lot with my Peru, lol. Endless runners and the leaves keep yellowing

Oh I disagree with the “string of” plants. Though I admit that they are only truly at their best if the pot is full and lush. I found the ones that consist of a few strands like the one showed are a bit sad and boring, yeah. They really benefit from active maintenance and propagation to fill up the soil.
The Standleyana will put out runners if you don't let it climb. It took me awhile to get the lighting right, but mine prefers low light (she sits across the room in my tiny home office from a Mother Life grow light). Because they do so well in low humidity, I have mine on a stacking plastic trellis instead of a moss pole, not a single runner when they can climb, and their leaves grow in closer together. Getting these to propagate in water was a nightmare, but one of the cuttings totally took off like wildfire in Lechuza Pon (I still feed hydro nutes high in nitrogen along with calmag). Honestly, I think this plant grows better in official Pon than it does in an aroid mix!
Edit: The One Leaf Wonder plants (some Alocasia and some Anthurium), add CalMag to your water before you add in other nutrients (I've made it part of my regular plant maintenance, and use it every other watering. It's great as a foliar spray as well). Some of these plants need that extra calcium and magnesium, and it will also help with leaves unfurling.
Hi! Does the CalMag help alocasia sustain more leaves? I'm growing a black velvet that is stubbornly killing off a leaf with every new leaf, and is proudly holding onto The One Leaf Wonder crown.

You could ‘stem propogate’ your regale, to make it a fuller plant. 🤩 The stem is super big, so it should be possible.
I have a small String of Turtles as well, that wouldn't grow, and I didn't like that. Until I found out that it needs pretty moist soil (in contrast to String of Hearts for example). Now I have it in a plastic nursery pot and it is growing well and full^^
I find my string of turtles doesn’t like to be watered often despite having one in a south window. So interesting how plants to do differently in peoples home environments!

My top 2 I would have no problem ditching that I was definitely influenced to buy are philodendron brandtianum and philodendron lupinum. Never imagined both would have to live full time in a prop box or a grow tent (which I don't have) to be able to put out leaves that don't get stuck and deformed no matter what. Even in a 70% humidity environment. Trash trash trash and I'm almost positive I paid $100 for the lupinum with three leaves at the time. Now I'm stuck with all these tiny cuttings from when I got pissed and chopped them back and threw them in a prop box. Lupinum has perfect leaves unfurling in there but it'll outgrow the box in no time and I'm sure it'll crash soon as I pull them out.
I completely agree about philodendron melanochrysum, I did a lot of research on UA-cam before buying it, but in that period everyone were just talking about how beautiful it is and how big it can get (and then referencing the same few pictures). Then I got one and I felt like the sentiment changed almost immediately after than, then everyone was saying how leggy it is and how difficult it is to get large leaves. Which of my experience too...
Kaylee Ellen from Rare Plantshop said it's so tough and can handle a lot, but what's that with to be now that it's one long stem with one in three leaves surviving and always staying tiny.
Oh well, Ehh I should have waited another 6-12 months in order to decide that I didn't need it.
My regret list is:
1. Philodendron Melanochrysum (people didn't mention the leggines nor the tiny and self-sufficating leaves)
2. Philodendron Verrucosum (people didn't talk about the spider mites in the beginning)
3. Monstera Peru (the never-ending runners)
4. Monstera Adansonii (legginess and tiny leaves when trailing, but I heard that some of the early specimens on the market are just bad specimens)
5. All Calatheas, both the first-time honest mistake round, and the second "I think I'll manage this time"-round (they are just suicidal, coodos to those who can care for them, but never again for me)
My raindrop and pilea peperomias annoy me. They look ok now... But during the winter, they barely survived! Also, peace lily's are for the birds 😅
To grow big philo leaves there is a method where you just grow all roots even aerial, with proper fertilizer and then chop the biggest leaves with time. So you stay with bigger and bigger leaves with time. And the plant is not in a lot of shock since it has good aerial roots grow. I think its called chop and extend method. Sydneyplantguy is really good at it. You should check his videos as well. It helped me a lot. 😊
My biggest regret is a Hoya Sunrise. I spent way too much on a plant that has been so fickle about its watering. I had to re-root it because I gave it rot.
Shortly after nearly killing one of my most expensive plants, I joined my local Facebook group. Someone was selling super healthy Sunrise seedlings for 1/4 of what I paid for mine 🤦♀️
My sunrise had root rot when I got it! I also had to re-root it and it's doing well now!
Here's a little string of turtles tip! Prune it. The new leafs should grow bigger. And you can propagate what you cut off :D
