Virgin takes very good care of their customers and their machines we flew in „hot lips“ and „Jersey girl“ in 2018 and thought they were new planes. Both are retired. „Hots lips“ was scrapped already.
Every 747 can carry a 5th pod under the left wing I also worked a lot on G-VWOW prior her leaving to join Virgin Galactic now Virgin Orbit, that aircraft never skipped a beat
Even though she tried to kill me (fell off a work stand just above the left wing leading edge), I still love her. She was instrumental in teaching me to be the mechanic I am today. I worked on them with Northwest Airlines 1985-2005. Then after the strike was over & Delta bought NWA, I worked for Delta for 10 years 2010 - 2020. I retired 4 years ago & I still love watching videos of the aircraft.
I saw 747 number one and two being built and I watched number 2 roll out and eventually fly with my dad who worked on it, I have super eight movies of its first flight coming down Puget Sound off Edmonds Beach . Number one never flew, it was tortured and destroyed in stress test jigs. Dad took me in to watch some of that too! He worked on B-52 number 11, 707 number one, and the first 747 until his retirement and 99! Thanks dad!
I’ve actually worked on the Virgin Cosmic girl during my time as a ground engineer for Virgin Atlantic at that time we knew her as G-VWOW Cosmic Girl. I was working the day she departed for as we thought storage, but it turned out she was off to a new career. She was quite a new aircraft in very good condition, hope they’re treating her well in her new job!

I got to sit under the Cosmic Girl for a long time. I interacted with the team a lot. There is so much to tell about the aircraft. Who is flying it? That's a story on its own. When they bought the 747, they stripped it down and were astonished to see how well Virgin Atlantic maintained its fleet. Made me feel good because I flew them at the time. It's an impressive airplane. The extra pylon looked almost mangaesque in its design. What a great team. I would work for them in a heartbeat.
Would love to, but I don't think there're any modified A380's out there. I might be wrong though, in which case I would live to discover some and make a video about it 👍🏼
I've driven through Mojave a couple of times. Early in 2020 I saw Cosmic Girl there and didn't know why a Virgin Atlantic 747 was there. I learned about Launcher One late last year, and then it clicked for me.
Back in 2001 while living in Illinois about 30 miles north west of Chicago, one morning I saw a 747 SP flown by Mandarin Airlines circling in a racetrack hold pattern about a half mile south of me. Every time it made a turn, the pilot over compensated going wings level after its turn. The plane did this on every turn giving the impression of being flown by someone who wasn’t that good at flying. I was concerned enough after the 9-11 attacks with airliners that I called the local police who then contacted the FAA. It lucky turned out be nothing in that it was a legitimate flight, but convinced me that Mandarin Airlines pilot’s were sub standard.
The SP is definitely more of a mod than the Pokemon livery. And on that subject, the third Ed Force 1 is a lot cooler than any Pokemon themed plane. That third plane was a 747 with Iron Maiden livery and sometimes flown by lead singer Bruce Dickinson.

I‘m happy that I got to see two 747SPs. One was the SOFIA and the other one the VIP 747SP of the Omani Government, which also has an addictional hump on its hump. Sadly this 747SP was retired last year :( I also got to see other special 747s like the prototype and many 747s of heads of state
The VIP SP is in storage at Pinal Air Park, parked next to it is another SP ‘Star Alliance’. The Rolls Royce 747-200 test bed lives at Tucson International and flies regularly.
Top 10 Aviation No Problem :) will watch the part 1 Update: The Part 2 is amazing. Some of the 747s I know. Some don't. But really, this is the best 747 video ever.
I remember the first 747 for South African Airways delivery flight which did a detour over Johannesburg so people could see it. There was a spare engine attached to the one wing.
I can't recall where its from but I'm certain I have seen a 747 with a pair of double binnacle engines mounted under the wing, four engines but in two twin engine housings kind of like the engine set up on a Vickers VC10 but underneath the wings. Is this an actual flying aircraft or is it simply some sort of mock up?
Flew a PanAm 747SP Singapore - New York via Hongkong and San Francisco 1980. Very nice trip in First Class. Strange feeling though to board in a short-sleeved shirt and exit in NY in a business suit in full winter!
from Calcutta, Air India once had 5 engines flown to Tokyo in 1980, one guy took the photo while climbing up the stairs from his Minolta film camera, little knowing that his son who born just few months later, will post that moment as a youtube comment 42yrs later... :)
On minutero 6:56 the Tail of the jumbo hits the ground on lift off ! Anybody saw this ? Is in It this why the structure of airplanes suffer fractures and crash sometimes 🤔?
As you can see it has something like a block there. It was done for flight testing to determine the minimum speed required for a take off without a tailstrike and other tests. Something like that is usually done with every new type
From the beginning, the 747 was engineered to ferry a fifth engine under the inboard left wing with a full passenger load. This does reduce the range and over all performance and there are established flight adjustments made like increased Rt rudder, reduced cruise speed, and altitude. It's not a cheap way to ferry an engine though.
Does anyone know what the payload is that is being loaded onto the B747? Also what is on the plane that is striking the runway on take off? On the part with the original 747 prototype there is a reference to the 747 factory being the largest in the world I wonder how that compares to the NASA VAB cubic feet.
They test for VMU (minimum unstick speed) huge oak blocks are attached to the tail skid area to protect the aircraft skin. They record the speed at which the aircraft flies. Shown in the video….. interesting test
I flew on an Air Canada 747 from Heathrow to Toronto which was ferrying an engine back for maintenance, Reduced loading meant I had 3 seats abreast to myself. Got a visit to the cockpit. The pilot thought the Gander ATC controller was being an a-hole. This was in the 70s.
I saw one of the engine test planes by Glasgow MT. It looked strange because one of the engines was HUGE. I read later it was for the 787. I saw the Shuttle one in Colorado Springs with the SHuttle on its back when it stopped for fuel on the way to Florida. I have seen a completely unmarked except for tail number 747. I saw the Presidential 747 in Idaho and Colorado. Actually watched it land but it was on 35L and I was by 35R along with about 20 other people.
About 1973 Seaboard World received their first 747-200 new from Boeing with a nose cargo door as well as the side door. It was know as the container ship becaise long containers could go in thru the nose. It could actually handle a 40 foot container. For a few years that aircraft held the worlds record for the greatest T/O weight.

The "dead" pylon Quantas used was an official option, but I think no other airline ever ordered it.

SP's were scheduled into EWR during the late 80's early 90's on the Tokyo run. Always enjoyed looking them over while I worked there for Continental.

I doubt that that needed much strengthening when they can carry a fifth engine alternatively.

its got two engines stuck together on each side
