What’s more amazing about the movie, as well as the Three Mile Island accident is that scene where Michael Douglas is consulting a nuclear engineer. The engineer makes one comment that if the core of the reactor were to be exposed it would render an area the size of Pennsylvania permanently uninhabitable. Which is exactly what happened 7 years later right after the Chernobyl disaster.

You mean, 7 years before Chernobyl…

The Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant in Long Island NY was in the process of being completed when The China Syndrome premiered, and the Nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island occurred (about 12 days after the movie premiered). With no way
of evacuating Long Island in case of a nuclear accident, the Shoreham Power Plant was forced to shut down. The owner, Long Island Lighting Company LILCO, agreed to sell the plant to New York State for $1, as part of an agreement that New York State would cover the 5 billion + dollar debt that LILCO had invested in the plant. The plant never did open, however, the property taxes on Long Island have increased substantially over the past four decades as Long Island homeowners pay for the interest on the multi billion dollar Shoreham fiasco. At least the plant was never activated. There were no initial deaths in the Three Mile Island meltdown, however, over the years many residents of the area have died of cancers that were the result of the radioactive Fallout that took place during the Three Mile Island nuclear meltdown.

Nuclear power could be mankind's way to sustainable energy. But fools keep shutting the nuclear plants down. And they even feel like they are some heroes for doing it.

There is no solid evidence of cancer rates increasing as a result of the TMI near meltdown. Independent studies were done and they only said it was possible that the cancer rates increased because of the 1979 incident. That isn't conclusive proof.

Watching this movie should tell everyone with a single brain cell not to trust your government to protect you!!! But do your own research!!!! And trust your own understanding

I find it hard to believe that "The China Syndrome" opened to just "decent" reviews. It's an amazing film. And Siskel and Ebert both gave it their highest rating.

This guy's commentary was just a blinding glimpse of the obvious.

It is Ben Mankiewicz after all; he's not really ever done much of anything but ride on the coattails of his relatives.

What a great movie!!! Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas were good, but Jack Lemmon was fantastic. He started off as one who believed the thing that happened, but as the movie went on, he discovered that maybe Fonda and she thought about the accident was true. In fact at the beginning of the film where the nuclear plant was doing a Turbine Trip, Lemmon had saw the coffee cup he had set down on the table shimmer. All in all, The China Syndrome was truly awesome. Personally I think that Jack Lemmon should had gotten an Oscar for his performance. 🏆🏆🏆
