His translator was not just his translator. My wife is a Japanese translator and she has all banking information from her colleagues to help them pay bills, enroll their children, etc. Japanese culture is based on honor especially around other Japanese people. They are naive at times and never imagine they will do something bad.

    • @moelee2791

this is so TRUE! Japanese automatically trust people, sometimes to their own detriment. With Ohtani, this is probably the case especially when he cannot speak english fluently and would rely on his interpreter to handle his bills and other things. People do not understand the Japanese Culture.

I don’t think Ohtani has done any sort of gambling ever in his life. He is just not interested in gamble. He thinks it’s silly and waste of time and money.
On the other hand, Ippei always had an interest in gambling. He went to a school to become a casino dealer, however he never finished the school.
I feel so bad for Ohtani being forced into this kind of mess and getting this kind of negative attention because of his close friend he trusted the most screwed him up.

Thanks for your support for Shohei. PBD & his team shoud research Shohei Ohtani before they opened their mouthes. Shohei's only addiction is the BASEBALL since he was a little boy. He mainly focuses on how to keep his body healthy by strict diet and training plus sleeping 10 to 12 hours a day. He has no time/interest on gambling nor partying that distract his performances. If you research his 29 years of life you'll know that he is the most disciplined athlete. Also, he barely spend money on him but happily spend on children to be future baseball players! (Donated 60k Baseball groves to Iapanese school kids, and 100 school kids for Home stay this Aug. in LA all expenses paid by Shohei. )

I moved to Japan last year to retire at 78. I am a lot more experienced than Shohei in business and probably speak Japanese about the same level as he speaks English. I have to rely on my Japanese wife for residence business, banking, health care, and almost everything else because living in Japan is so different. It's not like the transition to Mexico or Europe. I think Shohei is entirely dependent on the people around him and totally innocent. He is getting $700 million from the Dodgers and probably more from endorsements. He doesn't need money, and he doesn't have time to learn about American sports teams and odds.
Comparing him to Pete rose is ridiculous. There is zero evidence of Shohei gambling, but with Pete Rose there were betting slips and testimony from other players he was gambling on baseball. I also remember "Charlie Hustle" as a player. He had a long career and hit a lot of singles, but he was nothing like Shohei Ohtani is so far. Shohei is more comparable to Babe Ruth.
To me, this whole discussion reflects the cynicism, negativity, and corruption that made me want to get out of Southern California and live in Japan. In Japan, the government actually seems dedicated to serving the people instead of thinking they're better than the people. I worked in DC. I know how they think. The newspapers cannot be trusted, the elections are questionable, and half the people hate the other half. It's not like that over in Japan. People leave bikes and tools on the sidewalk, and nobody takes them. Everybody is polite. Clean. Safe.
I gather Shohei just got married. I think his new wife would probably be happier in Japan. If I were Shohei--or Donald Trump--I would say to hell with this cynicism and hatred. Neither one needs the money. And by the way, baseball in Japan is better to watch. It's a faster game--the players don't just stand around scratching their butts.

What you're saying about the culture is true. But there's literally wires coming from his bank account to an illegal bookmaker. Ippe comes out with this story that he's a huge degenerate gambler. Shohei spends more time with this guy than his wife and he has no inclination about that? How does Ippe making 80k a year get a 4.5 million credit line with a bookmaker? How many transactions of $500,000 or more is Shohei making a year? His accountant or financial manager didn't notice that at all? The guy got married and no one even knew he had a girlfriend. You're saying it's not possible he could have some closeted gambling hobby? Lots of questions remain.

I think standards should be applied equally across the board when MLB is conducting investigations on players. On July 2, 2021, Trevor Bauer was accused (not guilty or liable) of sexual assault. At that point, the MLB placed him on administrative leave while an internal investigation was initiated. The same standard should apply to Ohtani, as well as any future player investigations that the MLB initiates. #FreeTrevorBauer

Agreed, but Bauer had a target on his back. He pissed off MLB and Manfred, and they were (are) out to get him. Plus there is #MeToo and believe all women. If Ohtani wired money from his account into a book makers account for his interpreter, that was really dumb of him. If you wanna help the guy, that's your choice, but wire HIM the money and let him pay the book maker. You don't want any link to a book maker. It is well documented in the Japanese media that Ippei Mizuhara, the interpreter, attended a casino card dealer training program after college. I think it is safe to say that Ippei is the one interested in gambling and not Shohei as certain people blindly insist here.
Also, common sense says that people who have a history of lying will always lie. Ippei’s blatant lies about his college degree from UC Riverside, being an interpreter for the Red Sox says a lot about one’s character.
Apparently, this character has not changed at all when Ippei changed his story from telling people that it was his friend’s gambling debt that Shohei help pay off to his own gambling debt. Common sense tells you that the interpreter is the one lying and not Shohei.

Baseball’s rules and guidelines are crystal clear: if you bet on baseball you’re banned. it doesn’t matter how good you were the rules are the same for everyone. If you gamble and bet on the sport you’re out. It’s sad and unfortunate that Pete Rose did what he did, but those are the consequences.

    • @Nytegard
      @Nytegard Місяць тому +1

You also need to understand that this is after baseball relaxed the rules on gambling. At one point, Mickey Mantle and Willy Mays were banned from baseball, because they agreed to do a meet and greet and sign autographs at a casino. Not even gambling, just being at a casino.
Gambling is the worst sin you can commit in baseball, and it doesn't matter if you're a 3rd string player or an all time great. You gamble, you're banned.

The thing that really gets me about the Ohtani situation is how FAST he turned on his interpreter. What made it even more strange was how FAST his team retracted his initial statement against the interpreter. Why was an interpreter allowed to touch Shohei finances AT ALL? I simply cannot find it within myself to believe that Ohtani is completely innocent here. You can’t be a grown ass adult and just play naive when millions are leaving your personal account.

Tom nailed it when he said MLB often leaves players and teams hanging in the wind, sweeping it under the rug as quickly as they can. Astros are a prime example. The article in the Athletic said multiple teams were doing similar things, but only Mike Fiers would go ‘on record’. MLB singled out the Astros and declared the league clean. Despite rumors around NYY, LAD, and others, Manfred was satisfied limiting the damage. People ask why weren’t the players punished? Why didn’t they take away the World Series? Because the players were granted immunity in return for their statements. The league had to grant that because they didn’t have enough evidence without it. As for Yankees and Dodgers claims to championship, Correa said it best when he said they tried it during the season, but scrapped it early in the Red Sox series because it wasn’t effective. “If you don’t know the facts, you (Bellinger) gotta stfu!” The numbers backed that up. Offensively, the Astros were better on the road in almost every category. Jomboy media has video of the trashcan bangs against Seattle. He’s a huge Yankee guy. You don’t think he would produce video of the ALCS if it existed? NY and LA are the two largest television markets in the country, and no one has video of it happening. If Aaron Judge and the Yankees are looking for someone to blame, they can look at their own Clubhouse. They scored 19 runs in the three ALCS games in New York, but only three runs in the four games in Houston. Who had the cameras? Sorry Vinny, the Astros just beat that ass like they have EVERY TIME they have played NYY in the playoffs. Ohtani guilty - Tom’s logic that he (or manager) would’ve noticed the first or second time $500K disappeared from the bank adds up.

I don't expect people who are very interested in finance and business to understand the mindset of a sport's legend whose only main hyper focus is their sport. Shohei doesn't touch his money at all, likely doesn't even know how much he has, probably doesn't even care that much. His mother is the one in charge of his bank accounts. I can only presume Ippei ingratiated himself with Shohei's family as his friend and interpreter, most likely gaining access to at least some accounts if not all. The idea being Ippei would manage his day to day money, which I believe has been confirmed, that Ippei had at least some level of money management for Shohei. Now with all this information coming out about all of Ippei's lies over years and years, added with the gambling problem that he's kept hidden until now, you can fit the pieces and see how Ohtani was blind sided by all of this.

No one questioned it at first because it was normal for him to speak for Ohtani. That was the same reason he was able to pull off this massive fraud. No one questioned if he was really speaking for Ohtani because it was normal to go through Ippei for anything Ohtani related in an official capacity.
