I have been using the GB splitting maul for 3 years and really like it. It makes splitting a lot easier and faster than my old hardware store splitting maul. I sharpen it once a season. It is a very high quality tool.

Any log that wobbles like that after it has been hit is going to dissipate all of the energy you've put into it rather than it being concentrated down through the contact point. Save yourself time and energy, make sure you have a solid splitting block and ensure your logs don't wobble.

I commend you, sir, for giving honest effort to show us the difference between two tools. I prefer lighter splitting axes, ie. husqvarna splitting axe, fiskars x27. Good working tools with reasonable price tags. Glad to see that you didn't kill yourself filming the effort. I would rather work the bark side close to me and move arounf the log myself but I don't believe your axemanship is in any fault. A lot of guys would be thinking that they could do better with their GB Small Forest Axes but I am not one of them. Let them do some honest work with hardwood rounds and grow up some. Great info. I am going to sub your channel.

That was painful to watch. I hope your viewers appreciate what you put yourself through for this video. I generally use a splitting wedge and a sledgehammer or I have a 14lb "Monster Maul" for splitting the bigger stuff. I have a couple Gransfors (forest and felling). They are for log surgery :) If you want to whack-a-mole on a log with those little splitting mauls, by all means... If you want to split a round over 8 inches (oak or elm), check out the 14lb monster maul. I'm not being critical, I understand you're demonstrating capabilities. Great content as always!

That’s why I gave the details in the bottom corner of the type of wood... how long it has aged, and size. Obviously wood that has dried and started a crack is much easier than what I was hitting. And in a normal situation I would have used the backside of that Gransfors Bruks to drive a wedge lol.

Interesting comparison but I knew the outcome before you even started. I have the Gransfors Bruks splitting maul and I’m convinced it’s the best there is. Perfect head weight and length of handle. It’s narrow wedge shape is perfectly designed to split wood. I also have the Fiskars X27 and it is excellent as well but the GFB is superior in every way except cost. I’ve used both extensively so can speak to them both. For 1/4th the money and durability of the handle get the Fiskars. But if you want a beautifully made axe that performs the best definitely get the GFB splitting Maul. BTW Nice axe collection you got there.

Great video but, if I can't split a round in 3 or 4 swings I move on to another. Those hard to split rounds, I saw in half again and try to split later. I use Council Tools 5lb splitting axe, 6lb and 8lb splitting mauls (USA) for my splitting needs and very happy with them. I have had to cut wood into table top like pieces because they would not split except using a hydraulic log splitter, which I don't have. Happy splitting.

Some kinds of oak spit easier with the rounds sitting as they grew others with the bottom end up. At any rate that wood splits better with a maul that has convex cheeks! A harbor freight 8 pound, after a little grinding, works much better in that white oak than either of those.

    HAAAANS! Get the Ochsenkopf!
well, that is some nasty wood ^^ but in my opinion a universal axe is the biggest BS you can build. ether you want to cut smth or you want to split something. a thing in the middle is just crappy on both of these. I just did this mistake myself and I bought the Ochsenkopf universal Forest Axe with redband plus system. that is basicly just a Felling Axe with a bigger Blade. doenst cut realy good in wood, does get stuck while splitting and is extremly hard to controle while bouncing off o the sides. just get a Splitting axe or the big Ox, thats the right tool for nasty Oak. Germany is full of those.

My husband I were out splitting wood yesterday. No maul used he has a big gas splitter and uses the tractor to drop big logs on the splitter. As you get older have to work smarter - I am 70. He says a real man doesn't need to wear chaps - he uses a 30 inch bar and has never cut himself. Our splitter would have taken care of that log in 1 minute like cutting butter. After you heft and swing that thing all day your are the bitch, and you know you have been beat down. At my age i just use the fiskars for the straight grain. The bitch beater for mo more than six tries on knarled pieces of wood. If it is quality oak,or hickory that i must have i will hook up the hydraulic log splitter and use some common sense.

All that time wasted juggling a balancing act on a chopping block. Duh... get an old tire ,the size you prefer. Set your logs in it and split them with a maul or modern splitting axe.
The wood will stay stable and you wont have to chase it all over gods creation. I prefer ash, locust, hedge apple,or what they csll bodark osage orange.white oak,red oak ,beech, pecan, and hickory. I live in the land of harder woods, and it is vest to use a splitting maul,or splitting axe, because these woods that i refer too ,will lay waiste to a good axe.

Too much wobble and axe bounce. Work smarter not harder. Try to get your axe stuck on every swing by driving it straight down. Then flip the log over and drop the back of the axe on another log. Every time the axe bounces off the log or the log wobbles, energy not being transferred into the log and is wasted. This youtuber explains splitting and flipping the log technique perfectly, ua-cam.com/video/Fxk5pahKQRQ/v-deo.html
