I have watched all the films and documentaries of Ritwik Ghatak and Satyajit Ray.When I did not see a single film of Ritwik Ghatak and saw a good number of Ray films,I thought Ray was the better , but when I watched all the films of both the directors , my opinion and appreciation about them changed a lot. Ritwik babu did not get the proper financial support ,proper requisite cinematic gadgets and the money to visit the foreign countries to watch the world cinemas. Ray got these support abundantly. I have read somewher Ray watched The By-cycle Thief more than 100 times before making his first film. Ray is mostly for the class and not for the mass but Ghatak is,and will remain in future , for the class and the mass.I find the pangs and privations of the hoi polloi much more in Ghatak which haunt my mind painfully. Ghatak did not give attention to media,that is why he did not get much limelight to the cinema-lovers.Ghatak suffered frustrations,but Ray had no such frustrations. For some unknown reasons Ghatak's films were not allowed to release in cinema halls,not to speak of,in famous film festivals. Ghatak's 8 films are gems of Indian cinema.Some of the Ray films are undoutedly hallmarks of his rare multi-dimentional genious.I still remember respectfully Ray's documentary on Tagore.In conclusion,Ghatak's 8 films move me very much. Much remains to be said about them.I am not a film critic,simply a humble film-watcher. I respect both and I saw the maximum no of films of both Like Satyajit's- Apu's trilogy (naam Gulo alada kore r bollm naa), all three parts of Goopy and Bagha, Satranj ke khelari, Ghare Baire, jalsa ghar, mahapurus, porosh pathor, nayak, Devi, aranye dinratri, feluda series films, chiriyakhana, gonosotru, aguntuk, shimabaddha..... And Ritwik's - Megha Dhaka Tara, Subarnarekha, Nagorik(citizen), Jukti Tokko r Goppo, Bari theke paliye, komal gandhar..... Both of them are absolutely amazing.....

My opinion, for what it is worth, is Rai had an eye for aesthetic presentations, Ghatwak did not. By that metric alone, I love Rai's work far more than Ghatwak's. To me, cinema has to please at least some of the various sense, I possess. Even an extremely uncomfortable film like Mother was visually beautiful and had a hook, that kept me rooted to the seat. To me that hook is very important.

I have watched all the films and documentaries of Ritwik Ghatak and Satyajit Ray.When I did not see a single film of Ritwik Ghatak and saw a good number of Ray films,I thought Ray was the better , but when I watched all the films of both the directors , my opinion and appreciation about them changed a lot. Ritwik babu did not get the proper financial support ,proper requisite cinematic gadgets and the money to visit the foreign countries to watch the world cinemas. Ray got these support abundantly. I have read somewher Ray watched The By-cycle Thief more than 100 times before making his first film. Ray is mostly for the class and not for the mass but Ghatak is,and will remain in future , for the class and the mass.I find the pangs and privations of the hoi polloi much more in Ghatak which haunt my mind painfully. Ghatak did not give attention to media,that is why he did not get much limelight to the cinema-lovers.Ghatak suffered frustrations,but Ray had no such frustrations. For some unknown reasons Ghatak's films were not allowed to release in cinema halls,not to speak of,in famous film festivals. Ghatak's 8 films are gems of Indian cinema.Some of the Ray films are undoutedly hallmarks of his rare multi-dimentional genious.I still remember respectfully Ray's documentary on Tagore.In conclusion,Ghatak's 8 films move me very much.
Much remains to be said about them.I am not a film critic,simply a humble film-watcher.

My opinion, for what it is worth, is Rai had an eye for aesthetic presentations, Ghatwak did not. By that metric alone, I love Rai's work far more than Ghatwak's.
To me, cinema has to please at least some of the various sense, I possess. Even an extremely uncomfortable film like Mother was visually beautiful and had a hook, that kept me rooted to the seat. To me that hook is very important.
