It’s better to have three forwards who all score 15 each than one striker who scores 20 and two wide forwards who score 10. You have more overall goals and there is no single point of failure where your star striker might get injured or marked out of a big game. Saka, Odergaard, Trossard all get into lots of goal scoring positions precisely because Havertz is such a clever player with his movement. Don’t forget that Arteta only tweaked his system to use the false nine as one of his box midfielders (instead of an inverted full back) part way through the season. Havertz is already up and running with a goal against Wolves and this season, with his familiarity with what Arteta wants from him and his confidence much improved, he will significantly out perform his numbers from last year. Mark already acknowledges the fact that we’re a very high scoring team without a Toney or Watkins type of striker. It’s a reductive argument to say that you drop in that type of player you will automatically increase the overall goals scored because that ignores the opportunity cost of what you lose from Havertz’s link play. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Would you pay £100m for a striker to sit on the bench as a plan B for the last 10 mins of a game where you need something different? Man City might be able to afford that but nobody else can, even assuming such a player would come just to sit on the bench.
Very true. My thoughts exactly. Watkins, Toney & Solanke as good as they are, have only had one good season. We have a Jesus who has played well for multiple seasons. If not for injury he would have been more consistent. He has had a great preseason and raring to go. We will add Merino and also we have two more defenders who can attack well. So I think we are covered for most positions. We need to remember that Zini can also play midfield and so can Timber & Benny.

It's always easy to say 'Buy a 20 goal striker', but he still needs time to accommodate to the new system, team members, etc. Having a same team with another year under their belt could allow them to score more just from knowing each other. Also, less risky to spread the scoring load across the team than rely on a 'proven' striker

I'd argue Havertz is the 2nd best striker in the league behind Haaland. Per 90 last season Havertz was better than Haaland when at striker. Over performing his X/G and big chances missed while also scoring more/assisting more per 90 and creating more, dribbling more and physically a lot stronger. Is he better than Haaland? No but I think people sometimes forget he is the same guy who was tearing it up in the Bundesliga and a future ballon dor winner.
