Have you ever felt lonely, even when surrounded by people? Do you struggle to forge meaningful connections in today's fast-paced, technology-driven world? If so, you're not alone. Loneliness is on the rise in many countries around the world and more people than ever before are feeling alone and isolated.
In today’s episode of my Feel Better Live More podcast, I'm joined for the second time by Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy - the 21st Surgeon General of the United States. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard, his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine, and his Masters in Business Administration from the Yale School of Management. In his role, Dr Murthy helps to advance the health and wellbeing of all Americans and has worked to address several critical public health issues.
In our conversation, we discuss the growing epidemic of loneliness and its impact on our health. Vivek shares profound insights on the far-reaching consequences of loneliness, which extend beyond mental health to include physical health problems, including an increased risk of stroke, dementia, heart disease, and premature death.
We delve into the root causes of the loneliness epidemic, exploring how fundamental shifts in technology and culture have altered the way we connect with others. Vivek emphasises the importance of taking social risks, building communication skills, taking regular social media breaks, the life changing benefits of volunteering, and he talks about the idea that simply dedicating just 10-15 minutes per day, to work out our social muscle will very quickly start to deepen our connections with the world around us.
This thought-provoking conversation is for anyone looking to foster authentic connections in an increasingly disconnected world and deepen the relationships that matter most.

I love my own company too I get that I thrive on being alone. But I don’t feel lonely I feel connected to myself. Both you and I aren’t experiencing loneliness, we’re experiencing being comfortable alone and feelings of comfort and connection with ourselves.
Loneliness isn’t a state of mind, it’s a real emotional pain that people experience. We’re social beings in relationship with ourselves and others whether we like it or not.

Isolation is a good opportunity to be alone with your thoughts and feelings.
What people need is the choice to be alone or with other people at will.
Needy, insecure, clingy. Desperate people are also extremely unattractive on a romantic sexual and even business level. When people try too hard it’s a turn-off. Gimme gimme gimme…
What people need is to learn to be less insecure and less desperate. More confident.

@Noumenon4Idolatry Isolation and being alone are two different things. You can choose to be alone, isolation is forced. Being alone and loneliness are two different thing as well, loneliness is not being alone by yourself - you can experience loneliness in a crowd of people.

@@rockingredpoppy9119 These words have always been used interchangeably. I like to isolate myself. I also call it seeking solitude. I do it to find myself or to look within.
      Lonely is mostly a feeling.
A feeling that someone will fill a hole.
It’s when people look outside their selves for happiness. They become dependent or codependent on others.
People can find inner peace and happy ness in prison. There are monks who spend a lifetime mostly alone and they do not all die young.

one can be in the company of people and still feel lonely ! it is a state of mind. SHORT ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM - Loneliness comes in when we dont have a connection with our creator.
Since man is a social being we *try* to make connections with people, try to engage with something - but these are all masks, trying to help ourselves. *SOLUTION* - stop pretending. Remove the mask of being fulfilled, contend with things , titles, and impressing people. Be true to ourselves by Answering the question - who we are , why are we here, where are we going - *SEEK the truth and one will STOP feeling and being lonely*

Loneliness is not about being around people or just due to lack of company, many can feel lonely in families or with so called friends or in groups...sometimes we are in the wrong group or we are not in safe place in order to be honest about ourselves,we fear judgement or rejection or redicule.
Yes ultimately it is about finding acceptance and connection within with our true self or however you might describe it but sometimes we need relationship in order to be able to find that connection,to get feedback and interaction.
If loneliness is so overwhelming then as they say we reach for ways to sooth the pain that might not be healthy so sometimes we need another trusted person to help us know who we are. This is what is called attachment.IPeople literally kill themselves for lack of that connection or attachment and will be addcited to drugs or all sorts of things to avoid that pain.
You said it,we are social beings and when we fear being disconnected or alientaed from our social group or society it can lead to absolute fear and despair,to know we can be ultimately connceted to G-d or who we are inide does not always help if we feel so alienated from ourselves.
Loneliness kills,it is literally killing people thorugh drugs, suicide, overeating and other inhealthy self destructive habits,it is not something that can be easy to "get over"or understand and there can be alot of shame involved.

I totally get that loneliness is a problem for many people. What about us who are introverts and feel there's too many people around us most of the time? Is loneliness a problem for my health if I don't feel lonely? I mean, if I enjoy being on my own (my dog is always around though so maybe I'm not alone), is that solitude a problem for my longevity? I wish the experts distinguished between being extrovert versus introvert, since we have vastly different needs.

    • @serenityjewel
      @serenityjewel 3 місяці тому +2

Loneliness has a consistent definition. Even introverts want and need a certain level of connection and if they’re not getting that, they’re lonely. Someone happily enjoying their own company isn’t lonely.

    Conflict of Interest Concerns
During his tenure as a pandemic advisor, Murthy maintained a lucrative side business as a coronavirus consultant to the private sector. He was paid millions of dollars in coronavirus-related consulting fees for companies such as Carnival Corporation’s cruise lines, Airbnb’s rental properties, and others. This has raised concerns about his credibility as a spokesperson on the pandemic response and presidential adviser.

Yes he did, but what is the conflict of interest? That he might have influenced the course of the pandemic by advising groups and businesses how to protect themselves, prevent transmission, etc? And that would conflict with public advice? He didn’t profit by decreasing incidence of spread, did he? Who better to provided consultation to groups about disease prevention than an expert scientist? That’s like saying an expert teacher who is employed full time in a school system should not be a consultant to a non profit or graduate school that wants to provide ideas for improving schools. It’s never been a conflict of interest for physicians to provide education to anyone other than his/her patients, just for example.
