This is the whole reason I named my channel what I did. Sometime you just have to go and get out and reset, refresh and relax.

My buddy and I were just out yesterday (Saturday) hitting the trails all around big Piney and seeing the iconic places like Bubs cabin and the school house. If you ever need a wheeling buddy that lives in central Arkansas give me a shout, I’m normally off Friday, Saturday, Sunday! (I know it would be to hard to ride with all your subscribers but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask!)😊

We was exploring our options at the time our oldest daughter was about to graduate and then we ended up with some family things come up and we had chose to put or outings on hold and adopt the four kids. We are blessed enough to have the opportunity to help so we did. We will one day be revisiting the overlanding idea.

Thanks for the great video Matt. I need one of those diesel heaters. If you get time one day can you review those heaters you have. We tent camp out of our Jeep in a Gazel tent but now that it's cold wife is holding up the Jeeping kinda. LOL
Thanks again we watch every video you post. Took the wife on a 14 day Jeep trip thru New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and back to Texas last month using Gaia, and Trails Off Road. 3600 miles we took 20 hrs of Gopro 9 4K video and over 4000 pics with the Canon EOS R. LOTS of memories!
Thanks for all the inspiration to get outdoors.

We’ve been Jeep camping all spring through fall. Now my wife says it’s too cold, the kids made her take them home in the Jeep while I stayed with the trailer RTT with the nice warm diesel heater. I want to go this weekend but I feel guilty leaving her alone with the kids… I could sit by the fire and in the warm tent all day/night.

My biggest hurdle is distance. We have nowhere good to go locally. We are 2-3 hours from a good NF, and 5-6 hours from any trails or creeks with a rock in them.

You do have the best job ever. I used to go out 2-3 times a week and just drive the trails and camp out, that was years ago. Not so much any more, what keeps me from doing it again, time and money and money and time, hopefully that changes next year and I can have both a the same time 😊. Great vid.

Hey, Matt... one of the first things I noticed was the windshield... was going to ask if you traded windshields with Brad over at Trail Recon. He has an almost identical crack on his 392 now. Awesome that you got the windshields done... kudos to the guy who hooked you and Cara up.
We do go out and wander sometimes, but living down here in south Texas, have a lot less public land to explore. You're truly blessed to have the Ozarks and Ouchitas in your back yard.

Biggest impediment is that I don’t yet have the recovery gear to be smart going solo. BUT! I do try to go out on a few forest service roads and explore my local mountains as day trips. I haven’t camped in 4 years, we’ve been busy rebuilding our house after a wildfire destroyed our town. So that part about the idiots and their 🔥 really ticked me off!!!
I have recently found a local group (2 hours away) that leads off road trips at least once a month. And they have a beginner’s trip on Sunday, so I’m going to go join them! I’m beyond excited! It’s nice to join in with a group leader that HAS the right equipment in case I get stuck.

Channels like yours and many others, have inspired me to get back out on the trails and just explore. This past January I finally went on the first solo camping adventure. I've camped and off-roaded with others, many many times. But I just never got the motivation and situation to where it felt right to go solo. That finally happened this year and it was an experience like no other and I long for when I can do it again. Thanks for being an inspiration!

I, like most of us, go as often as I can after meeting all the other responsibilities that comes with not having the "coolest job in the world." I also am restricted because the amount of salary I can spend on gear works out to equal the amount of time I have to "just go!" It wouldn't make since to have all the gear I need and then not get the time to go at all cause I'm stuck working to pay for all that gear. Yes, I'd love to just drop everything and just go! But tonight I am resting from this week's working demands while you entertain me. Thanks for the escape!

Matt, great topic & politely issuing a challenge, great leadership qualities!
I am thinking fear of getting stuck somewhere or breaking the vehicle…no by-pass around an obstacle…these videos are helpful in learning, but an “educational” series contrasting what you just did vs. how you would do it in a stock jeep (non-rubicon) and how you would navigate it with the previously mentioned concerns.
    Thanks for the awesome content!

Great video. I do pretty much all my wheeling by myself, being retired and single. During lockdown I would fix some snacks and drinks and just went out and drove every dirt road in the county out here in the rolling hills of western Oklahoma. I saw things and places I had never seen before and had a blast. It was very cathartic and safe since I was not in contact with anyone, and lots of fun. I drove the western side of the Oklahoma Adventure Trail a couple times and got to drive the rest this summer. Overlanding by yourself is something some of us do because we have to, we don’t have anyone to do these things with, and because we enjoy it, it is loads of fun and good for our mental health.

I was spoiled growing up in CO and AZ, and camping all my life with my dad and brothers in the Rockies, the White Mountains, Four Corners, etc etc. Not to mention some awesome winter camping in Southeast AZ in the Dragoon Mountains and deserts. Living in TX now I keep talking myself out of going camping because "its too far and takes too long" to get to my old stomping grounds.... but your message in this vid reminds that there is a lot of exploring to do within a few hours of Dallas - including your Ozarks! Thanks for the reminder about the importance of being a Nike commercial... JUST DO IT!

Man I love solo wheelin- it is actually what I do mostly, or maybe just my son and me in the Gladiator.
What keeps me from getting out as much as I would like?
    1. Work- Trial lawyer and partner in a small firm. Hopefully only 10 more years though!
    2. Family- I won’t call it obligations bc it’s not- given how much number 1 takes away from them already, I’d rather spend time with them than get on the trails if I have to make a choice. And there are a lot of times they can’t go bc of obligations.
    3. Time and distance- all of my trails are 2-3-4 hrs from me. Tough to work in sometimes.
    4. Energy- sometimes Im just too pooped from 1. to deal with 3. Lol.
    5. Other interests- I also have other stuff I like to do- mountain biking and hiking and fishing (which can be combined with offroading), going to museums, boating, kayaking, seeing shows.
Luckily I have a vaca home in the mountains of western Maryland, and we have an offroad state park (Wolf Den) 20 mins away and it opens up WV, western VA and western PA to easy daytrips. For this I consider myself very lucky. So between beginning of April and end of Oct we are there almost every weekend and out hitting trails. As a result of everything above my trips are mostly daytrips right now, but just got a Gazelle tent which should make overnights easier and therefor be able to do a few more
Like I said, I also mountain bike and hike too. And we are blessed in the DMV (District Maryland Virginia) to have a plethora of trails and local parks, plus the Chesapeake Bay only 45 mins to 1 hour away, so there are lots of opportunities to get outside, get in nature, and get on trails, even if Oxblood only gets us there. We started Picnics in Pretty Places during the pandemic so if we don’t have a lot of time often we will just toss in the grill and stove, camp kitchen, and eating stuff boxes (everything else is prepacked and in the bed 24/7) and go do a picnic at one of our beautiful local parks- sometimes as close as the Rock Creek Park in DC proper, sometimes along the Chesapeake or Potomac, or sometimes in the Piedmont area of northern VA. Great way to still get outside, get in touch with nature, but keep it doable.
Anyway, great vid. There is a river in Wav called Blackwater that I have a vid of on my channel with that same color water- where you shot this vid reminds me so much of western MD, WV, and western PA. And the little gravel road that runs along side the river is an old RR bed so you can drive a 2 wheel drive car along it. Love your attitude. Keep on wheelin it. Hmu if you ever got out my way.

We weren’t put here to live in repetition. Get up, go to work, come home, go to sleep, and repeat.
Sadly though, it happens. It did to me. I’m 53 now and I’m trying to take what’s left and experience as much as I can afford to, lol. I even started my own YT channel😮.
I was at the Overland Expo East in Virginia and I didn’t get to meet you and your wife because you guys were swamped “but” I did get to meet your dog lol long enough for a scratch behind the ears which sent him into a crazy tumble/scratch on his back😂.
    Anyway, maybe next time.
Thanks for great content and helping some of us who were a little stuck in the American nightmare, wake-up!!
    Willie

What a great topic for the solo travel trip! Also why we named our channel just that.
Loved that Moon Shade. Definitely going to look into those. I can only image the weight savings.
With our diesel heater I use a rubber mechanics glove under the cap for travel purposes. 75/25 success rate...😂
The Coleman Oven rocks! Great for reheating leftovers. Especially Thanksgiving Yummy... Happy Thanksgiving to you and the community.

It’s hard to find trails close to New York City. Also, driving through traffic to get to the trails around the city can take hours. It sometimes takes 2 hours just to get to the Holland tunnel to go to New Jersey.

Matt another great video! Your filming technique is really amazing. As someone who is wanting to get into overlanding you do a great job showing the how much fun it will be. Only complaint is I spend so much time watching all these videos i'm not getting my work done LOL. Keepem coming.

Ok. First and foremost, love your channel. I watch every episode, hit the like button and sit through the ads. Since you asked what's holding me/us back from getting out, I'll try explain and be brief. I'm glad I waited until the end to reply. I'm a young 52 year old. I used to have a stock '96 Jeep Cherokee that I "car camped" when I went hunting, fishing or just camping. It was pushing 200,000 miles, and the repairs were getting too costly, so I sold it. Now i drive a '15 Ford Fusion. I have general idea of what you're talking about of just getting out. HOWEVER! You initially came across a little off putting. You came across like it's so easy to do. I do not want to go $100,000+ in debt (from one of your recent episode). So I am a sub that lives vicariously through you and the other channels I watch. Again, absolutely love your content! Huge fan! Hope to meet you at Overland Expo in Loveland next year

But he made the point that you don't NEED a $100k rig to go out solo and enjoy yourself. Now a Ford Fusion probably won't cut it, but a used Jeep with a small lift and good all-terrains will take you almost everywhere. Drop about $2k in GOOD camping gear--buy once cry once as they say--and go hit the trails. Also, you can probably find that same XJ out there for $5k. You can't kill those things if you try.

@@W2IRT I'm fully aware of his point, and completely understand I don't need a $100k rig to get outdoors. Like I said...I've done the "getting out" numerous/countless times car camping in my Jeep. Again..I currently do not want to even go $10k+ in debt with your suggestion. He initially came across in the episode a little "preachy" about getting outdoors, expore..and why everyone isn't doing it. And...AGAIN ...I choose to live vicariously through the UA-cam channels.

Moon shade is no joke and finally got one. Wife was skeptical but after 1 time use and seeing it she realized the value and versatility of it so we sold our mounted 6' awning. Keep up the good work!!! We try not to make excuses but with a 5 yo and 3 yo and another baby on the way things will get very interesting to see how camping goes haha

Love your solo trips. Usually my favorite. You really bring us along with you. The main two things that keep me from doing this nearly as often as I like is location and an issue with my vehicle. Being in the northeast, we just don't have any dispersed camping or thevtrails like most others do. So a trip like this would take me two days of driving just to get to. On your deisel heater, those tanks are seemed together right down the center, and the threaded fill hole is on that seem. So it's not a nice even flush seating area for the cap. Block sand it down so it is. THANKS!!!

Hey, not sure where you're located but there are dispersed sites in Vermont and the Adirondacks. Some are incredible. The big difference we have is a lot are closed in the winter.

@@Blue.Crawler Where do you have dispersed camping in upstate NY? I've gone out a few times in the Green Mountain Nat'l Forest (nice sites along Forest Rd. 71 and 10), but no good Class IVs near there, and only about 60 or 70 dispersed sites. Never saw anything in NY State that isn't an official state paid campground that I could drive my wife's Honda Civic to.

    • @Blue.Crawler
      @Blue.Crawler Рік тому +1

@W2IRT there are a lot of dispersed sites in the upper part of the GMNF as well. Some are off of class 4 roads that it's tough to get into. As far as the ADK park I've been gathering information from adventure bike groups so I can do a trip to discover them. Mostly north of Glens falls, with a mix of pavement and rough dirt. Southern Vermont has some good class 4 that you can put together a route from rt9 to Warren. It's not as easy up here for sure but there are some great spots. I wish we had open lands like other areas do, but I've managed to put together 4 or 5 day trips in northern NH and northeast Maine.

We live in west central Illinois farm country so there's no public lands to explore. We're only a few hours north of the Ozarks though and we spent a weekend a couple weeks ago exploring the backwoods of Arkansas.
Most of our warm weather adventures are spent on our Harley. We love to head out on weekends with a few friends on our bikes and we find all kinds of interesting things.
My hope is to talk my wife into overlanding during cooler months but she's still not too excited about the idea.

April 1st is my first day of retirement and I will be able to just go and explore the USofA. Dedication to the job is what keeps me at work until retirement. 14:10 that has to be the most idiotic thing that a person can do when camping. This is what burns down the forests and gets trails closed to the public, it adds fire to the treehuggers to take away our lands for recreation.

What keeps us from going out: 1: new Bronco hasn't come yet and our F150 4x4 still needs attention, and 2: we have a special needs child who has seizures, and temperature extremes affect his seizures. So if we go anywhere, we either have to stay at a hotel or bring the "hotel" with us (i.e.: camper)
