Yeah, they're shamming. "Give the people what they want to HEAR" (since we're not going to give it to them anyway) seems to be Pimax's motto.
Could have been as simple as a typo by their web developer....but everyone assumes it is intentional because Pimax

Well Pimax is not on my radar anymore. VR headset is easily the best tech in 21st century but the way company does thing just make it worse when it comes to marketing and trust. No wonder why VR isn't sold well and only Meta does

They were just trying to float a balloon with no heliun in it, so to speak! When they found out that this didn't work, they reversed it and put back the $699 version of Crystal light on their websit. By the way, I'm finally getting my Crystal Light with local dimming and controllers. I'll soon see if it really works with the super-beast-of-a-laptop that I bought not too long ago. Wish me luck!

Just looked at the website, now it says the $699 headset supports 120hz.

That's a great news. Personally I don't mind to not to have 120Hz, but yes that is the point that they should clarify that earlier. At least we are back in the game 🙂

They could say... Due to little interest we are not going to release the $699 version. Plus on reddit they say they told you and you still uploaded the video
The point of the video was to show the terrible management, marketing, and lack of clear factual communication.
Then saying they are going to fix it doesn't change anything. Also the device is still not available and just said coming soon. Well, that could be two weeks, two years, or never......
On the website I just checked the 120Hz is still there for the Non-local dimming version.
Awesome, could you get a updated statement fro Pimax about the Micro-OLED Super headset? I'm one of those who pre-ordered that headset without knowing to much about VR and hardware.
Seb commented on that in the previous video... He doesn't think they are geared up to release in 2024, maybe late 2025. I also reserved the OLED super, could be a pipedream. However, in the meantime, I'm buying the PSVR2, cheapest OLED, (and PCVR on Aug 7 when they release their PC adapter), tethered headset you can buy right now. I don't want anything other than OLED going forward, or maybe the XR-4 which apparently is as close to OLED as possible for a Qled headset, but PSVR2 is $500, and XR-4 is $4000, so, you know...

In uk isn't $699... it's £899 with taxes around 1000$ ? Everyone saying is cheap but is not here , and the dmax isn't available anywhere. The company really need time to fix , is not a good time to buy pimax , just wait after summer will be easier to buy
Pimax HQ will not learn. They have promised change but keep doing the same dodgy/stupid/shortsighted marketing. I like their products eventually but you have to wait to see what actually emerges and for it to mature before buying. Don't believe what they say till its mass market released and reviewed.

I've been watching the Pimax Crystal Light for a few weeks now, And the Local Dimming model has been on the website the WHOLE time, So I don't know what is going on? Maybe this is a region thing? Or did they take it down only for like a day? I'm quite confused, Each time I've checked the website in the past few weeks, The listing for the non-local dimming one was there.
Even checking wayback machine, June 4th it was always up on the website
It is a good strategy to address the criticism directly to the management in this way. I'm a little sceptical about whether this can fundamentally change anything. I hope so.

If you rename the '12k' to 'crystal' then you wont have to honor 8k refund upgrade agreement...

The '12K headset will be shown at CES, January 2025.
They first (due the pre-order ) gathering funds to accommodate build process costs. In this market (small and no future proof) this strategy is common sense to keep the business going.
But that's not true.
Google, "did pimax recently get investment money", and you'll immediately see a story about how Pimax just got 69 mil in investment money--in May of this year (2024). Nor is this the first time in recent months that the company's claimed to have recently received tens of millions in investment funds. I seem to remember a similar announcement appearing early this year.
This absolutely begs the question, what are they doing with all that money? Their behaviors are indeed that of a startup that's just trying to raise money to produce their headsets through pre-orders, but their own and others' reports indicate that they shouldn't need to, not to the extent that they seem to be doing so.
As a Pimax customer I sincerely hope that Pimax appreciate that you are genuinely doing your best to help Pimax.

In 2024 I'm not buying anymore plastic clothes, bottled water, donations to political campaigns, or Pimax hmd's. You should do the same.
I didn't realise that was with controllers. I'd be hesitant to order without seeing impressions from reviewers - but thats a nice $200 less than the one I'd need to get without an existing index/controllers.

Pimax please just tell me upfront how much my headset will cost. Can you believe you as a consumer won't even be told the final price until you have committed to paying an estimate and then get emailed the final price? WTF?
Final price is impossible to quote (outside China) as each different country a customer lives in charges different import duty rates and VAT rates.
That's why prices quoted are without tax.
All companies do this.
The same applies if you live in Europe, for example, and see an Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU advertised for $1599. It's never $1599 as it's thus amount plus taxes and import fees outside of the American market.

Hey Seb, It would have been ideal to reach out to your contacts at pimax before releasing this video. How sure are you that the lack of 120hz option within the no local dimming version isn’t just a typo?
There is an article on Pimax site now, titled ‘About the non-local dimming Crystal Light’ which states the headset shares the same resolution and refresh rate.
Next video we'll see him pulling a Decagear out of a hat.
Personally I think any LCD headset without local dimming isn't worth buying, so I understand why pimax would want to revisit their decision to sell them. But to simply remove them, not good... Suggestion to pimax: drop the price of the 799 version with local dimming and iot and controllers to 699, and drop the model without local dimming out of the list of options

Only the Pimax controllers work with it. If you buy the lighthouse faceplate then you can use lighthouse tracked controllers like the Valve Index ones.

The original Chinese is read backwards from right to left, apparently that's how they do everything :D the other way around :D Their equipment is good.
There was a statement on their page, you just need to select it in the store:

I see the option for the $699 headset with (60Hz, 72Hz, 90Hz,120Hz) but with no option to buy. Says Coming soon

I could understand why Pimax try to do this but they always doing it in a wrong way. Pimax got problem with production especially because two different HMD. From production stand it is simpler to produce one than two different products no matter how similar they are. But in that case you should take different approach. Pimax should explain that to customers and offer some middle solution in a way only 899$ version with LD but with additional value in a way of Audio upgrade . That means just one model for production, maintains and supporting. This will simplifies and reduce some costs what will cover additional cost of the audio modul to Pimax and customers will get better value for 899$. That will be win win situation for all.
So exact the same model you got for testing should be new one standard product.
I think if they offer this as new solution everybody will agree with it. So this is something what we all stil can achieve on mutual benefit.
There is a good fix they could make: JUST SET DOWN THE PRICE of the Crystal Light Local Dimming versjon, if you can not give the non local dimming version, and everyone would be happy

I stay on my opinion and don't buy a PIMAX headset. They are so unserious with things like this happening again and again and again. I'm really not interessted on PIMAX in general anymore.
Agreed. My fear is the quality of them and what kind of RMA service I get if something goes wrong with it. I hope Valve steps up its game.
I am happy with my 8kx I'd say I got lucky, but I wouldn't be again if engage with Pimax again. These headsets are tempting but that rollercoaster of a ride that they take you with their product, ain't nobody got time for that!

Non local dimming paid in full been told 6 weeks shipping from purchase .4 weeks to go.Pimax emailed again to then tell me normally 6 weeks after purchase ...they have taken full payment ..paid with PayPal. Registered issue with PayPal so here hoping for crystal lite in weeks time or money refunded. Completely understand your concerns with pimax as are mine but PayPal payment best way in my opinion

You're right, this a an amateur way to doing business, their strategy is totally incomprehensible, its looks like some students are trying to make business, its weird.
I also find it extremely frustrating that their product page only has one image per product, head-on view only, no other angles, no 360° view. It's 2024, but their web page is Ebay 1995.

they've always been a bunch of amateurs, you can just see it from the quality of their presentation and software. it's emblematic of the minuscule size of the VR market currently, that such a company can be one of the bigger names in the industry. HTC could and should be competing for the market, but seems like they've given up, at least for the consumer market.
not saying that I would have done any better, I know how hard it is as a VR engineer, but this pimax's level of R&D isn't going to bring anything more than curiosities like massive FOVs which has a really poor tradeoff curve with weight and comfort

Haha..., they put the specs just as they want to. Local dimming is nice. Depends on what you want to play. Elite Dangerous or Squadrons....then it's worth the upgrade.
Could have literally been a mistake they rectified as opposed to anything you did. They seem fairly sloppy in a few areas re work. As you mentioned, not great managers.
