This video is so great and thank you to Build and this interviewer for such an open discussion. I'm prefacing this with I am a gay man, I hate Donald Trump and the GOP. But...this video title is a PRIME example of what JVN was talking about. "Jonathan Van Ness Confronts Trump-Voting Father" as opposed to something like: "Jonathan Van Ness On Working Together to Unify". What this title does is just reinforce the inability for people to listen to each other, instead using words like "Confronts" and "Trump-voting". @Build Series, I love irony, but this could have been done better.
Honestly. I'm a lesbian and feel the same as you about the current administration. But as much as I'm disgusted by this administration and love JVN I avoided watching this video for the past week because the title was so needlessly incendiary. Was not in the right space yet to deal with what I thought the contents would be based on the title. Great conversation, but come on, Build.
Sooo...... he said one small line about his dad voting for Trump, and that is the title of the video, when he is talking about not just focusing on one little thing that makes headlines, but actually being informed about everything. You guys missed the point of what he was saying when posting this video.
Wowwwww BUILD “villainized the media” with that clickbait title. Taking the one sentence that he said that seems most controversial when he talked about SO many important things. 🤬 did they even listen to him???
This is like the calmest and most serious I've ever seen jvn speak (and I love it just as much as his usual bubbly effervescent extra self) but like right towards the end if you listen he almost breaks and I want to give him such a hug in that moment because aaaaa I'm so proud that he's doing this emotional labour for us ❤

They help catch diseases that arent even related to having sex. They educate on sexual health and well being.
You should support your right for abortions.. it’s never too late to abort yourself. Now if you want to kill an unborn baby you are a heartless “person” deserving the fate of a murderer.

Planned Parenthood is amazing! When my husband and I first got married we didn’t have two dimes to rub together. When my son was 6 months I was afraid I was pregnant again (with no insurance) I went to PP and they gave me a physical, pregnancy test (it was negative) and birth control for $10! It was amazing. I think republicans think all they do are abortions. They do so much more. Good for him for talking about how important planned parenthood is.
@danger stranger He asked a simple question and you are spazzing out on him. You call Christians sheep but you cannot even stand up to that little bit of scrutiny without losing your cool? I'm a conservative and I appreciate some aspects of planned parenthood, particularly the female health aspects. What I do not appreciate is how they have been caught doing extremely sketchy things. If you can stomach an opposing view, go watch Steven Crowders experience with planned parenthood. To the OP, Melanie, I am happy it all worked out for you. I wish we could keep the positive aspects of PP and get rid of the sketchy parts.
@danger stranger Crowder is merely a comedian. He does say things that I don't personally like sometimes, as jokes, but I can see how they might offend people. That is definitely one thing I can say I don't love about Crowder. But like I said, if you get past that and you actually watch his content, you cannot say he is lying. He just did a video about Warren that I believe you could appreciate. I watch people like Tim Pool and Jimmy Dore for news. My belief about abortion aligns closer to you than you might think. I am of the mindset that I can understand why people would be upset about abortion. It is a heavy decision for a mother to make, even pro-choice people acknowledge that. While I personally don't like the idea of abortion, I see it as a necessity. If we did not have doctors able to legally perform such operations, people would take that into their own hands. The types of people who want to have abortions aren't the types of people who are in a place to raise children, whether that is a financially, maturity, morality or what ever the case is. Each case is unique. I wish we lived in a perfect world in which those children could be born, but the world is ugly. I think what most people are against is when you start talking about late term abortions. There was even a prominent figure, I believe a governor, who spoke about abortions after the baby was born. I'm down with Planned Parenthood providing legitimate and necessary health services to our women, but I think there is a real discussion to be had about what is the justifiable time frame for abortions. I am prepared to have that discussion in a respectable and logical manner. I just wish more of society was. Everyone is too afraid of 'losing' their argument these days we tend to put on blinders. You tend to see this particularly around discussions about progressive ideas. It is okay if you don't take my word for it. You should check out progressives like Jimmy Dore, or moderate liberals like Tim Pool. Crowder is definitely not where I get my news from, but he also has good points once you make it beyond the crass jokes.
@@jasonlarsen3515 That is a fair point of view. I tend to think this same exact way about discussions on Student Loans. You must be the type of person who takes responsibility for yourself. I think that is the clear disconnect between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives want to be responsible for themselves and they tend to want to rely less on others. Liberals on the other hand seem to think more on a community sense. They don't care about their community, mind you, it is actually based on their own self interest. They have their problems and they want their community to take care of it. I believe this mindset develops in the city more often because they depend on others in their daily lives. That being said, relying too heavily on others and being irresponsible to the point that you cannot take care of yourself without the help of others is clearly not the wisest option.
He’s so right we have to quit writing each other off, and meet at a place of dialogue, and understanding will come, just because we get an understanding where the other side is coming from doesn’t mean you now agree, but it can give you insight on how to I change the mentality that person has on an issue. Many republicans think in numbers and economically, want to get them to change their opinion on something you better bring good data, and then show them how that data that will affect them. Democrats think emotionally, want to change your mind bring them stories and show them how that thing has made a true positive impact on them.
Clayton Wyatt Omg thank you so much - I’ve been diving into conservative videos and reading and even occasionally lightly rebuttal conservatives in their little cliques and echo chambers. (Yes I’m progressive) You’ve REALLY helped me to continue this objective!
Not to be argumentative, but I take issue with your characterization of the thinking styles of republicans and democrats . While I agree that there is a certain kind of republican whose focus is more on economic issues, I don’t think that data is as convincing as you suggest. Also, it’s rather dismissive to suggest that democrats think “emotionally.” Easy categories are part of our problem. However, I take your point about meeting each other halfway and trying to find the right language to use in dialogue with different people. :)

Wow….Prolific. This was 2019 when he was speaking of Pence closing Planned Parenthood in Indiana . Look at us now in 2022…closing them all now nationwide. So sad.
He is soo right. I have psoriatic arthritis and am very read on medical issues and had not read that undetectable viral load=not transmittable. My injection meds are very expensive and are only so expensive here in the USA and the same goes for AV therapy. The government should make sure that people are quickly diagnosed and treated as a public health issue. No one facing such a ridiculously stigmatized issue should have to fight through reams of paperwork or have to drive hours to a clinic out of state due to religious opression causing closing planned parenthood clinics.
The headline of this video kind of speaks to the very "headline sensationalism" that he talks about in the interview. The issue with his father was a small piece of a much larger point he was trying to make.
I lived in Clark County, Indiana during the time that JVN is talking about here. (Not that it's improved much since then) Unfortunately, people all across the U.S. (especially in the south and midwest) are suffering from legislation that imposes unreasonable (and often impossible) red tape "regulations" that prevent HEALTH CARE.
Jonathan, Thank u for standing up! I love u so much dude. Just to see someone like u showing strength and power in your position. Dude you are so much my hero! Thank u and I love you! Live strong! Be strong, and at the same time, dont fucking ever be anything but what you are feeling for the moment youre in. You're life matters dude. You're more than just a human! I’m a fan and just learning through this vid that he is positive. But more importantly how educated and passionate he is and ready to teach. Love you Johnathan ❤️
A lot more people that wouldn't care about what a fashion star has to say will come and see this, if the title stays. I think it's an awesome way to spread information outside of a specific circle and think it should remain as is.
This deserves so many more views, you can see he’s speaking on issues he’s truly passionate about and issues that seriously need more attention from the media
Why does JVN look like Vandal Savage from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow in this interview?!?!?! I love you baby but you looking like a bad guy....kinda love it tho 😂
It makes it show up for people who follow something other than fashion, really smart. I have always enjoyed Jonathan, queer eye and gay of thrones are two of the few things I watch other than political commentary and news.
It doesn't. JVN is wrong about that part. Indiana law bans needle exchanges unless the governor declares a public health emergency, which Pence refused to do. Losing the Planned Parenthood didn't help, but the root cause of the outbreak was Pence's moralistic opposition to needle exchanges, not Pence's opposition to Planned Parenthood. Once Pence changed his mind and allowed needle exchanges to be set up, the rate of new HIV infections in Clark County dropped from 20 new cases per week to 2 new cases per week, almost overnight.
Saying that to your dad is fucked. People who let politics get in the way of family and loved ones are whack. It’s a big game. Neither side is the lesser evil. Both parties are run by the same corrupt people and corporations.
Did they even listen to what he said?!...he literally talked about the sensationalist media and how toxic it is to us as a society. I guess this channel hasn't figured out the irony.
I interpreted his point as more being about all of us, scrolling through our Facebook feeds reading headlines and not bothering to click on the link and get the full story. However, I do agree with you that media sources need to be responsible with how they write their headlines.
People are so dumb. ‘Clickbait/ title is so ironic’. Or is it? It’s why you clicked on this video only to find valuable information and insight instead of the tea you were seeking. I think that’s kind of the whole point 🤷♀️
Click bait lines used appropriately in this case. Exploit people’s ignorance so they are duped into paying attention. Well played! (Also he explains this)
To say LBGT community compares there pain to our pain, African American, Jews, Hispanics, and others is offensive. I am bi racial and the problem I have is that I did not chose to be mixed between black and white, therefore one who chooses to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender is just that, a choice. By our choices we make we suffers somewhat backlash. I’m not saying you should hurt people, be rude, but to say you suffer the same pain as we have is just offensive.
Yeah, I don’t understand how we have come soooo far with Hep C and treatment for it, where you can become undetectable and peoples wrong stigmatized ideas about it I feel have come down.... it’s the same with HIV yet there is still soooo much stigma, not enough educated people to let others know like hey people can have HIV these days an still live a normal happy life.
governments have never stopped a problem before it happened.its in human nature to let things get pretty bad before doing anything. necessity is the mother of all inventions.

Scuba Jedi The most underrated Bond!
He’s so articulate, insightful, and erudite. Completely underrated
Yes the titles click-bait... but if it wasn't, the important things he's saying wouldn't be seen by as many.
It makes it show up for people who follow something other than fashion, really smart. I have always enjoyed Jonathan, queer eye and gay of thrones are two of the few things I watch other than political commentary and news.
im not sure how not getting screened for hiv causes one to not use precautions?
He's so educated
They sounds like a really beautiful thoughtful and intelligent person. I love this introspection.
“They” you people sound insaaaane
I love him. 💕💕
Saying that to your dad is fucked. People who let politics get in the way of family and loved ones are whack. It’s a big game. Neither side is the lesser evil. Both parties are run by the same corrupt people and corporations.
Jonathan Van Ness is the fearless, rational, smart, queer voice we all need to hear.
He thinks he's smart because he's outspoken about celebrating being irresponsible.
Starke country that’s where I live I never heard of plan parenthood in my country
People are so dumb. ‘Clickbait/ title is so ironic’. Or is it? It’s why you clicked on this video only to find valuable information and insight instead of the tea you were seeking. I think that’s kind of the whole point 🤷♀️
How ironic your title is BUILD
Jonathan is so powerful and definitely a force to be reckoned with. Keep slaying, Queen!!! ✨✨
I like when people are willing to admit to traditionally uncomfortable or taboo things like mental illness, std, sexless marriage etc
Trump 2024
Click bait lines used appropriately in this case. Exploit people’s ignorance so they are duped into paying attention. Well played! (Also he explains this)
Condoms could help, just saying
Speaking of headlines...smh
Some of my family support trump. It makes me crazy. It hurts my heart.
I came here for the tasty brocollini...
1984 folks come true.
☝️Donald Trump Jr. is a trip and a half.
Apart from that annoying "Valley Girl speak", the man talks a hell of a lot of sense.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Youuuuuuuu BETTTTTTTA DROPPPPPPP KNOWLEDGE JOHNATHAN!
5:23 I think the issue here is that Hillary was the other candidate.
I can't with this title.
governments have never stopped a problem before it happened.its in human nature to let things get pretty bad before doing anything. necessity is the mother of all inventions.
This reminds me of a Susan Sarandon interview I watched once. :)
The one thing missing in this PC culture seems to be personal responsibility
