Andrew Bolt hits out at Linda Burney for ‘false’ claims about Lowitja O'Donoghue

- Sky News host Andrew Bolt claims some of the facts in Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney’s statement about Lowitja O'Donoghue following her death were “false”.
The Indigenous Affairs Minister released a statement after Indigenous leader Lowitja O’Donoghue died aged 91.
“At two years old she was taken away from her mother in remote South Australia and placed in a mission home, where her name was anglicised and she was prohibited from speaking her own language,” Ms Burney said.
“The Matron of the Colebrook Children's Home in South Australia where she grew up, told her that she wouldn't amount to anything.”
Some of Ms O’Donoghue’s acquaintances and a relative confirmed to Mr Bolt that the Indigenous leader was not stolen as a child. Instead, her white father dumped her and all of her brothers and sisters bar one at a home in South Australia.
She was looked after by Sister Rutter and the matron, Sister Hyde, who devoted their lives to helping children who were abandoned or neglected or sent to them for an education.
“The fact O'Donoghue went so far in her career and gave so much is a tribute to what the sisters at Colebrook taught her and that real story - not the one from the Indigenous Australians minister - tells a very different and better one than this government tries to keep telling us,” Mr Bolt said.
How disgusting can Lynda Burnie be. Instead of thanking the nuns for ensuring this lady grew up when her own people did nothing, she lied and tried to rewrite history.

This accords with stories told to me by my 95 year old mother who was a nurse in the late 1940's. Most of them weren't stolen but rescued.

I met Nanna Hyde thanks. She told stories of how the welfare, Balck car, took the kids. My mum was forcibly removed. My mum was not neglected, etc she was taken. Oh, and I should mention my x4 grandfather was ofcIrish blood and born in India in 1797, fought in the Indian Wars and settled in Australia in the mid 1800s to live in peace and farm the land.
He later became the 1sr Police Commisioner of South Australia.
His diaries shed light on the habits and customers of Aboriginals which could not be published today because it goes against today's narratives

My Grandson’s Great Grandfather was a mission raised man. He was grateful for all that he learned, not just a great education but also personal and interpersonal habits and skills which made him a successful, contributing Citizen of Australia. They were the Rescued Generation.
People forget how many white children also were placed in these homes. My father in law and all his brother and sisters were placed in one by there Dad after the mother died. No welfare in those days single parent pensions etc. The medical system all very different. He was in one in Brisbane and said there was very few aboriginal children that were there in his time. He was in one from the age of two to 16 or 17 about 1942 to 1956 or 1957. People seem to forget where history was back then and compare the past to the times we live in now or do it deliberately to exaggerate the story. What was normal back then is very harsh by modern standards.
Sure, I was in one also. I’m white and there was a separate building about 200metres away segregating black kids. We walked to the local public school in a group with some of the older kids in charge. I didn’t ever see the black kids going to school. I’m not sure they didn’t go somewhere to school but they were never with us white kids. I used to see them playing outside sometimes but we were discouraged from talking to them. Ironically, I met a lady my age (65yrs)only a few years ago who was in the black home as a child. At the same time as me. She was definitely stolen and severely punished,tortured and abused. Hers is a documented case of institutional abuse. We were treated ok but the house parents before mine were sacked for abusing children. I was 7 years of age then.

Sadly your father in law was in there when blacks were definitely segregated or moved out completely. The removing of aboriginal children may have been glossed over as good intention but the fallout is very real. I don’t know about Brisbane as I was in Sydney but you have sparked my curiosity. @@jayrwickerman He recently passed at 83, Didn't talk much about it other than they were quite mean but said some of the farm placements were worse. One dairy farmer he always said very cruel. Was more in the last year he talked bits and pieces about it. Can't find the pad we wrote the name of the home it was something college. His Dad still seen the kids but had gotten with another woman who had kids and did not want them as well, so the story goes, so they all stayed in the children's home. Makes you appreciate the good home I grew up in. The more worrying thing is how many children are been removed now to unsafe home environments.

It is in appropriate that press reports refer to Ms O'Donoghue as "Dr". She was given honorary doctorates. The protocol is that honorary receipients do not use the title "Dr", oand are not referred to as "Dr" out of respect for those who earn that qualification...

Failure to do so in the must humble manner, seeking forgiveness. She should be condemned until such time. Its is grossly unfit for a minister of the crown to make such a demeaning statement about people who created an environment for young aboriginal girls to flourish and lead the way in providing an example of what can be achieved with love and caring.

In the past, I have worked with several (“inconveniently” successful) part-Aboriginal people from the “stolen” generation, who told me in no uncertain terms, that they were eternally grateful for having being “stolen”, because that gave them a chance in life that they would never have had as a European / Aboriginal in their original communities, where they would have continued to be the subject of ridicule and abuse - their words, not mine.
