  • The Hadestown reopening was truly a special moment in Broadway history. Turns out, a year and a half without going to a show (either on Broadway or off) can have a surprising effect on a person. Take a listen to my recap of a spur the moment trip that turned into a bucket full of tears. Help me continue doing what I love: / waitinthewings

I got to see a touring company of Hadestown in the past year, and I, as a 22-year-old man, audibly gasped when Orpheus sang and the whole set expanded, representing the crack in the wall. The sheer scale and magnitude of something that appeared so stable suddenly moving left me breathless.

I’m so glad Broadway is back, even if it is for a little while. I’m seeing the Korean production of Hadestown this weekend. I plan on seeing it as many times as I can as it runs over here. There’s also a Mary Shelley musical I will be buying tickets for soon. (Also they are doing Jekyll and Hyde over here again so I have to see it.)

It'll be transferring to Broadway in February 2022 to the Barrymore Theatre after a pre-Broadway run in Chicago, and I haven't got to see a whole lot beyond official clips/videos, but it does give me Hadestown and Great Comet vibes, so I'm looing foward to it! I was also there reopening night. This is the first Broadway show I have actually seen on Broadway. We drove 7 hours there the day before and we spent the day of basically walking around New York all day. I really should have been absolutely tired, and believe me I was for a bit, but when I got in line and saw how hyped everyone was, my adrenaline was kicked into gear. Literally just waiting in line for the show got me excited. Let me just say that the electric energy from everyone lasted the entire night. It took me hours to actually fall asleep after the show because I felt so happy and cheerful that my favorite musical of all time was back. It was an incredible night I will never forget.

I was beyond lucky to be there on August 4th to see the first preview of Pass Over, the first play to open back up after the shutdown. To say it was emotional isn’t even a little bit enough to describe the experience. It will always be one of the best nights of my life.

@@WaitintheWings It was hands down one of the best performances I've ever been lucky enough to witness! And I have a feeling it will always be high up there. Even comparing it to the Amazon Prime pro-shot, (which is a completely different play to the broadway revision) it was somehow even better, even more moving, and even more emotional.

I was there a week ago, on Andre De Shields' closing night. Hadestown has been my favourite musical for years, and to clarify, I live in *London*. I booked the tickets as soon as they announced it, and booked an entire holiday around it.
I still haven't processed how incredible it was. The energy in that room was... I've no idea how to put it into words. Maybe in a few months I will.
But your video has helped me go a way towards understanding what I felt. So... thanks.

I was at one of the first previews. I had no idea what the show was about, but I was visiting from Montreal and bought a ticket because it was heavily discounted. I sat down in my seat with my $10 sippy cup of Coke Zero and don't think I actually took a sip until intermission. I came home and told anyone who would listen (and some who wouldn't) about how brilliant the show was. I love it so, so much. I recently stumbled across your channel and watched your documentary last night. All I can say is THANK YOU! I'm desperate to go back down the Hadestown. Your videos are tiding me over until I can.

I got overly emotional at our Macbeth opening.
As an actor, being without a live audience for so long was almost painful. Even just filming on a stage with no audience felt insanely empty. You'd finish a song and look out into the void. Waiting for something to happen. But nothing did. You just carry on as if nothing happened, moving to your next spot.
Finally, with our production of Macbeth, we were able to have two LIVE performances, and INSIDE the theatre! Each cast and crew member was allowed to invite four people per performance to sit in the audience, and we were ecstatic! On opening night, having those unpredictable and real reactions in real time was amazing. Just hearing them laugh at the fire safety speech was enough for me to jump up and down in the wings! At intermission, an alumni from the company came backstage to visit us in the dressing room and told us how proud of us she was! She also remarked how unfair it is that I'm taller than her now, but that's besides the point.
Before the lights even went down on the last scene, we heard applause erupt from the void. Even with masks on, you could tell everyone was grinning ear to ear. Finally, after a year of waiting, something happened. As I walked on for curtain call, that was my moment where I thought: "Wow, I'm never going to forget this experience for as long as I live." Even just this small local production of Macbeth with a maybe 25% full theatre was enough to make me almost burst into tears. We all worked our goddamn butts off to keep this production alive. And it was all worth it.
Thank you for making this video documenting your feelings. It brought me back to the last show I did and all the emotions that came with it.
    Yours truly, Crouton

@@WaitintheWings I was seeing a 'one man' play called A Million Little Things in a small theater. Over the course of the show the actor brings audience members onto the stage to play bit characters. The actor asks them a question and the audience member has to improves or he tells them what to do and it's all humorous. At one point he brings a man on stage to play a child therapist and he makes the guy put a sock on his hand and pretend the sock is a dog puppet. The actor asks man what kind of dog his sock puppet is and the guy replies "it's a sock-er-spaniel" the entire audience gave the guy a standing ovation for the pun.

I felt that feeling I need to get back on stage since my mom died almost four years ago. And I remember getting back on stage, maybe a year. It just didn't seem like the right time. I wasn't happy. I saw a local production of “Sincerely, Patsy Cline,” starring a good friend of mine that I’ve been performing with since I was in elementary school who also happens to be one of the premier performers in our area, a couple months ago. It was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen her do (and I saw her perform “Glitter and Be Gay” in Miss America prelims), and I cried the entire time. It was so special to see a live show again and especially to see someone so talented and special to me perform again. I think the entire run was special for her too, so many reunions with people coming to see her and live theater again and her youngest getting to see her perform on stage for the first time. I think we’re all going to be feeling this as we get back into theaters across the country, and it’s so wonderful.

Thank you for sharing this experience. We had tickets to Hadestown booked in April 2020 for my first trip to New York, something I had wanted since I was a little musical theatre nerd in rural Australia. It was heartbreaking to make those cancellations one after the other but having to cancel my first Broadway show was the worst, not least because I was thinking of all those involved in the industry. My first time back in a Sydney theatre earlier this year was magical and I cannot imagine how it would have felt on Broadway and with such a special show like Hadestown.
Hopefully we will be able to rebook and come out to join the magic in the not-too-distant future.

My goodness! You are so lucky to have been there. You cried 7 times seeing it and I cried twice watching you talk about how you cried 7 times. I am going to be an emotional MESS when I go to see my first show back in October.
My LAST show I was suppose to see in April of 2020 was Six. The shutdown happened and they pushed it so I rebought tickets again for October 2020. Obviously, pushed again. When they announced reopening I was beyond depressed because my days off from work was going to make it that I couldn't go see it. Like at all. Not until they changed their performance dates. So I cried, I accepted that it was going to be 2022 before I saw it, and I bought tickets for Moulin Rouge.
Then, one day on lunch at my job, I get a notification on my phone that "60 days til Six" and that they were ADDING 60 performances. I look and there is now a show the night before our Moulin Rouge tickets.... and I can go. I don't think I can ever look my co-worker that was at the table with me in the eyes again because I burst into tears as I was buying my tickets right then and there. And I will be taking my ORIGINAL tickets from April 2020 with me just to sort of complete the journey back.
I am going ALL out. I am custom making a mask. I have bought whole new outfit... something I never do because I am not a clothes horse and I will likely never wear it again. But it's going to be a night that's going to be worth it.
I HOPE that weather permitting I will be able to go to Broadway in Bryant Park later this month. I don't want to plan a bus ticket until I know the weather for that week will be. Will you be going? It's September 23rd.

Damn!! I'm from the Philippines and have never been to New York or seen a Broadway show and i'll be honest although I absolutely love musicals and Hadestown. I never really felt emotional about Broadway closing down. I never realized the impact it had on the community until now, watching this video literally gave me goosebumps and brought me to tears. God! Wish I could've been there! You just made me realize how much theatre really means to me and for that I wanna say thank you! Great video by the way!

I got to see the Wicked reopening on the West End and it was so amazing! It was the first professional show I ever saw so it's always got a special place in my heart and when I randomly checked what shows were starting to open back up during a trip to London to see some friends I hadn't seen IRL in like 2 years, I got SO lucky and managed to get a ticket the day before

Gosh this was an emotional watch, I'm booked in for one show at the moment and it's going to be a Christmas show called "The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart" at the Royal Exchange in Manchester where (very luckily for me) they are still going to be doing socially distanced performances.

Being on the other side is a trip. First show back as stage manager was Mamma Mia (community level). Spent tech week wondering if we were going to get shut down and I lose my job again. Until the curtain opened, it wasn't really happening. Not my favorite musical, but being able to be at my desk and doing what I love after 18 months made me cry. The actors and crew were all some level of emotional after bows on opening night. I have never heard or been in a crowd as wild and thunderous as that opening night.

we just started rehearsals for pippin, which will be in november, and i couldn't be more excited. i think it's such an important and poignant show, and i haven't seen anyone in my area put it on. i recently went to see a local production of 'to kill a mockingbird' and i am going to see one of beauty and the beast twice this weekend. i feel like i haven't been to a show in so long, so these are good to start off with.

I was late to the party in returning to the Broadway scene post COVID. But let me tell you that seeing Moulin Rouge (for the first time!) on Broadway in 2023 after not having seen anything in NYC since 2019…it was still magical.
Ironically, though, Hadestown (on tour) was my first show I saw after things reopened. And I was…less than impressed by the show. It definitely wasn’t the “Ahhh, Broadway is back and I’m seeing a show for the first time in about 4 years!!!” vibe I was hoping for.

I hope to see a show, especially Hadestown soon, I did however see my first concert, with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, at Radio City Music Hall last Month. Got to admit, the emotions ran pretty high there too but it seems Hadestown had us beat. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a show that had the audience gave an ovation to the silence the cell phones speech.
On a personal note, I will be photographing a friends community theater group who are doing their first in person event in November. So hopefully things will work out provided we don’t turn back…..

The touring company for Hadestown was the first show in my area in almost 2 years (you had to show proof of vaccine) and it was PACKED and we had a similar experience with all the applause between pretty much every song.
