Can you please recommend some books related to bridge design and load ratings ? And if possible for the building sector can you please make an episode related which chapters of code like asce and ibc are really necessary
It would be nice if you may emphasize various codes used for structural design such as ACI, ECP, .... also do you have to prepare your own excel sheets for each code or is there a way to facilitate the design process using any design code?

Mat, what do you think of Mcgregor's or Wight's Reinforced Concrete book? I have found it to be much more useful than McCormac's because they go more in-depth on most of the subjects.
I definitely agree with your mention of Moehle's book.
i wanna ask you a few questions. do you like to use SAP 2000? have you ever used RAM advanse and what is your opinion about that?

Hi Mat, should I buy the latest edition of Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design or is the 4th edition enough? I heard that there is new information in the latest edition (more practical examples?), but the paper and binding quality is bad, they don't have it in SI units either. Thank you!

I'm really interested in that first book that you recommended (Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design, MacGregor & Wight) but I can't seem to find any SI version of it.
I think there is a version of that on Amazon, there might be a newer version that you might look for.
I've all these books with me PLUS several other on my laptop...along with solution manuals... all on ACI codes...coz we have studied ACI in our university...we're using ACI code...not the other one...and for Steel, we're using AISC
Yes, I'm basing my books all on the U.S. codes (as I'm from the U.S.), so unfortunately, I don't have any books on the Euro/Indian, etc. codes.
@@MatPicardal American Codes are great. But I request you to start a course on Reinforced Concrete Design. Thanks. If you got some extra time then start Reinforced Concrete design course. Make small videos of 15-20min. Upload just 1 video per weak. Thanks again.

Hi I am a first year civil engineering major at UCLA what would you recommend I learn outside of school, like software and things such. Also should I look into getting a front desk job at a construction or engineering firm?
Get an internship in engineering and/or construction as your priority, even if you are just a first year. That's one of the best ways to land a position after you graduate. If you have trouble landing an internship, get involved with your engineering organizations and/or competitions. Show that you can hold and be successful in leadership positions to build up your resume.

Yes, you can! A lot of my hand sketches are just that, sketches. We have programs like CAD, Revit, and Bluebeam to make your drawings look nice.

That's awesome Beatrice! I really enjoyed the non-linear analysis and performance based seismic design classes. They are tough but it's being used more and more in the industry and that's how we as engineers are coming up with all these crazy landmark building designs throughout the world.

Sorry, don't know one off the top of my head. Maybe you can simplify the stairs as a typical slab/beam design if the stairs aren't too complicated?

I didn't plan to go to grad school, would I be limiting myself? What would I be missing out on?
Mostly missing out on seismic and non-linear performance based design. You could always learn through professional development courses, but it would take time obviously.

the first book has a lot of mistakes !
first of all the value for the factor or v/s correction not right the Superscript shall be above the expositional not on the 1.2
the example 3-2 the area of the top of wall shall be 24 ft x 16 in not 24ft x 1.5 ft
and a lot of mistakes shall not be there
even these mistakes was found in the 7th and 8th edition

Can you tell us your view on BIM?
I think it's being used more and more for medium to large scale projects, but won't really be used for small projects though (small residences, tenant improvements). At least in my opinion.

Elements to Eurocode 2 and other books by the concrete centre are really good. You should try some of those. You can also try John Bungey, Ray Hulse Bill Mosley - Reinforced Concrete Design to Eurocode 2-Palgrave MacMillan. For EC8 i.e seismic design, Seismic Design of
Concrete Buildings to Eurocode 8 Michael N. Fardis, Eduardo C. Carvalho, Peter Fajfar, and Alain Pecker is really good, explains a lot of theories really well but it specifically explains the clauses in the code. Elghazouli,_Ahmed_Seismic_Design_of_Buildings_to_Eurocode_8,_Second_Edition will be the best book for you if you are starting to learn about seismic design.
Wish I could, but I'm just basing these off on the books I currently use in the office (U.S.).
