Safety glasses is highly suggested here. I've done a few of these crafts, many times ❤️. While it only happened once, one of the gems popped into pieces when it hit the ice water. Shards did pop off. Fortunately, not far but ever since that, I wear some kind of eye protection. Love all of these ideas ❤
I purchase stone gems a long time ago and had a glass soap dispenser, so I wanted it to look nice. I put the gems at the bottom. What I didn’t realize is that after time I guess the different chemicals, the colors of the gems and the soap turned into some thing that gave my hands a chemical burn my hands are everything to me because I use them for all my jobs, my hands are so badly scarred because of it so if anybody does read this, please just don’t ever put them with soap.
@@jeandiehl5074 I should have but because I have small kids and wearing gloves isn’t the most convenient for my size. It’s either too expensive or can never find them my size. It was through every day normal use. And was even worse during Covid.
@@santyago4 They definitely can be used as they come. But cooking them and then rapidly cooling them in the ice water subjects them to thermal shock and they fracture, giving a different look for the various art projects.
For the bathroom hack, I think it would have been better to cut out a piece of backer board and affix it to the wall first. Then add the glass stones. That way, if there’s ever the desire to change that decor, it will be easy to just remove the backer board. Otherwise, trying to remove all those glass stones from the actual wall will be torture.
I don't think your backer board idea will work out, it's easier said than done. Backer board is attached to the wall with a very strong adhesive (so it can hold the weight of the tile, or glass gems in this case) which will rip the drywall off if you try to remove it. If it's only screwed in, you'd have to find the screws under the glass gems and grout. Additionally, it would leave the edges of the backer board exposed, which would be unsightly and add another step & expense to this project... covering it with trim, etc.
in the 1970s they did this to marbles and they were called "Fried Marbles". my dad made me a necklace, from one he made. I still wear it. you can do this on a stovetop or gas grill.
My big brother did this for us. Put the marbles into a metal pan, heat on stove top, then drop in bowl of ice water. You hear the crack, and there it is--a beautiful marble, crazed on the inside, smooth on outside.
Use safety glasses. Those glass stones can crack and explode. I would also advise long oven mitts. Shards of glass could strike a vein in one’s forearm.
Just an advice for those who care about their health: Don't "cook" anything in the oven except food. You don't want to be breathing toxic fumes resulting from melting plastic in the oven. You don't want chemicals and fumes released inside the oven and getting stuck on the oven walls, and then contaminating your food later.
I hope you are using separate pots, and safety glasses. 😬 Glass stones can crack & explode. Baking those in a food oven is a really bad ideaxbecause the compounds that are in decor stones aren't normally food safe, nor non toxic. You'd be better off with a separate vented craft specific oven, like maybe an old toaster oven Ina well ventilated area like a summer kitchen or a verandah. Some people might pick the wrong kind of 'gems' and end up baking plastic and start a fire. 🤬
As a retired person who owned a real estate company...don't directly glue kitschy gems on your walls unless you plan on living there for many years yourself. Trying to sell a house with a glass gem wall like this one is not going to go well. In most cases it decreases the value of the home. Especially in a bathroom or kitchen. Save up your money and buy good tiles instead of cheap dollar store gems.
What a person does to their property is their business. Would you think twice about resale value if you wanted to add a mural on a child's bedroom wall using different mediums? Same principle!
@@bambiprice8186 actually....yes. I hear buyers groan when they see brightly painted murals on walls, because they know that its going to have to be in many cases, sanded, primed and repainted. Of course if you plan on living in your home for 20 or 30 years, it doesn't matter. Just remember to repaint kid murals before you sell. And glass gems can be put on wood and screwed on the wall which would be easier to change out. Of course do what you want to your own home. But its a different story when it comes to reselling a house.
As a realtor I disagree, walls like this in a beach house are adorable. It depends who does the work. A good realtor can help their clients in finding the right home for them. A good realtor knows who can make these fixes or negotiate a contract for such repairs. BE YOU BE HAPPY and paint those walls!! Have fun!!! It is just a house.
I make mosaic stepping stones and coasters with them. If I’m doing a ‘real’ mosaic, I use glass that I cut myself. But I did this with my students before I retired, and they just placed the colors they liked in a pattern they liked, and we let the cement dry. They were so beautiful! We made some for Christmas gifts, and in the spring, we made some to put in a little flower garden on the campus of school. So much fun!
Yeah some of this maybe. But showing it can be done with things from Dollar Tree and you don't have to go to places like Home Depot or Hobby Lobby. I already do that, but it's nice to get ideas.
Why do they have to be cracked and order for you to use them? You don't think they're pretty enough without having them all crackled? Honestly from a distance I don't even think you can tell So I would just try using them by themselves I guess.
So creative and beautiful 💕 .. obviously people can use their own discretion as far as safety techniques… Goggles, gloves, etc. I suppose you could do it without cracking the germs too, right? And just make some colors combinations … thank you for sharing😍
When I was little we used to put marbles in a frying pan and heat them up they would crackle inside some would break open but it was fun and they were pretty
I did this around a large old mirror in my former loft apt in a 200yr old building. Someone had torn the original trim off and covered the mirror with a piece of sheet rock. I also did it for the backsplash in the same very large bathroom/dressing room.
I built a frame out of those around a mixed media canvas I had done. That sucker is HEAVY. I’d attach a picture if it would let me. I also made a Tabletop fire pit for my mom using these. I used rocks as the base instead of dirt though.

I came to say this
Is this toxic? Does cooking these beads release toxic fumes or dangerous chemicals in your oven? Might want to investigate first.

Very cool that you still have it and wear it. Way to go 🎉
I do glass fusion and I don’t agree….if they were plastic gems, yes, but glass wouldn’t smoke until it was in the thousands of degrees.
I remember those! Oh gosh! They were special.

Some of those gems are colored throughout and some of them are just color-coated (Walmart). Be aware.
Cool stuff! People make some really awesome things!!

My mother used marbles, and made a lot of pretty crafts. This was back in the late 60's early 70's.
Marbles were beautiful then. I wish we still had them like back then.
I usually look at these videos and pick one project I'd like to do. Problem is these are all FREAKIN GORGEOUS! Have to make 'em all! Thank you!
The beaded bathroom wall is a stunner!!!
They all look great.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I really wish there was more instruction on this video of each item that was made.. it was fun to watch 😊
Yeah, the second one where the lady made decor that resembled a crystal rock?.... wish I would have known what she used to glue the gems on.
The bathroom wall was absolutely stunning😮
I liked the bathroom wall but I didn't think that the green seaweed stood out enough from the other coloured, too similar in colour.
I love the window flag!!! ❤
I love the mirrors! I love the backsplash too.
I did this with marbles in Girl Scouts 60 years ago.
