Only good thing about water benders is bloodbending, and guess what? They can only use it like once a month during the full moon 💀 Earth is the weakest, due to it's inflexible nature, unless you're an experienced bender
Fire bending should be way more terrifying if it followed real life logic. Even if you block the attacks, the heat by itself is a big problem, and lightning bending should be pretty much an "I win button", benders aren't super fast, so they shouldn't be dodging lightning like that. Of course you can try and predict your oponent movement to dodge, but that's a lot harder than dodging projectiles. Also, while it's possible to survive a lightning strike, it''s not as possible to keep fighting after one.
Your straight up wrong characters in Avatar are super human blatantly and multiple characters have feats of reacting to lightning. The greatest is Iroh when he sensed a lightning strike coming and was surprised by it but still managed to deflect it while on Zuko’s ship. He knew it was coming and the where it would strike but not which direction meaning he had to register the bolt and get in position to deflect it and not kill himself showing some relativity to lightning. Also Lightning bending has a decently obvious charge for most people giving you time to react and either block it cause unless you are Azula your lighting isn’t explosive or dodge it if you’re an airbender.
It was also stated that either Ozai's father, or Ozai himself destroyed the history of Firebending's subbending types. And Electricity was exclusive specifically to the Royal family. While combustion bending requires special, monk like training. In Legend of Korra we saw a small tribe of diviners/energy readers that Korra visited. So there are probably many sub bendings that we don't even know. The divination could be expanded on. There could be temperature bending, even light bending. A firebender who could shoot a rail gun blast, heal people, or even become invisible
I wonder if airbenders can modify the temperature of their element. Every other element can, though its difficulty varies. For water benders it’s rather easy to make mist or ice, whereas for earth benders it’s very difficult to make lava. Obviously fire benders can make theirs hotter or… less hot lol. But for airbenders, shooting quick blasts of searing hot air would be OP

I think firebending is underestimated due to how little it hits people since ATLA is a kid's show. If firebenders had as consistent aim as waterbending or airbending, pretty much every protagonist would have died of first degree burns by now.

Lightning Extremely faster than a bullet by a long shot, considering how people can Dodge and redirect lightning no one should get hit by a fire projectile, since they're slow ,a fire wall maybe but if you can dodge lightning what is a slow fire cloud?

As for dodging lightning, your argument would apply to literally anything slower than lightning, i.e any other bending attack in existence. As it is, only a couple of people have ever dodged lightning, and that was by watching their opponent's hands and dodging before they fired.

I was going to mention that about most bending but if you read the kyoshi novel you know earth bending doesn't have that problem, air bending is invisible,and have you tried dodging a wave? Water splashes, if they spammed that move there's nothing you can do, even ignoring blood bending. Fire bending has a fire wall but that would only be useful in Inclosed spaces unless they get in close range, at that point you either die or go out like a kamikaze(which is what should have happened when aang tried blocking it with air, it should have killed them, it literally exploded.)
@@almessasorrow4950 Every person who redirected lightning was ready for it, no-one has redirected lightning unless they're clearly aware they're about to be blasted. What do you mean "earth doesn't have that problem"? It is way slower than lightning, and no faster than a fireball. Airbending may be invisible, but the amount of times people have dodged or blocked airbending makes it pretty clear they can either see the dust or are just trained to watch their opponent's hands. As for water, what is the splash going to do? Only the main projectile will do any damage, the splash will just get the target wet. You could make an argument for any element having the edge over the others. In the case of fire, it's advantages are instant serious damage, and the ability to produce it from the body. If lightning is "weak" because it can be dodged or redirected, that makes every element weak for those same reasons.
They nerfed lightnings effect so bad in avatar universe. Lightning bending is the counter to all water bending PERIOD. If you stood in a puddle of water and either lightning struck it or an extension cord was dropped in it you will not survive. Electricity is so dangerous. They really nerfed it in avatar universe

The balance is found in their abundance and utility. Despite the versatility of water it's the first to be caught without ammunition and requires a mastery to draw water from other sources or blood bend. Earth is very abundant but not very versatile. Air is the most abundant but lacks the lethality of the others. Fire is the most versatile, can be self produced, and extremely deadly all at just a beginner level.
Air bending has the lethality it's just not utilized by the culture since they are pacifists. Imagine a dude flying up to a building full of soldiers/people/etc, and making a massive vacuum covering every entrance, every window and mercing everyone inside without even needing to see them
Also earth could be way more versatile, I feel it was done the weakest of all the elements but hints of it show through. I envision a full grown Toph being capable of stomping her foot, turning the earth underneath an opponent into sand, forming a huge fist to raise them up then turning it back into solid/compacted earth and crushing them inside. I see being able to draw magma through the crust, launching it like cannonballs at ships or groups of enemies But sadly we mostly just get Big Step, Big Boulder save for Toph. Even Bumi feels pretty standard in how he delivers attacks despite his clear ability

fire has the advantage of firebenders being able to create their own fire, in the show they assert dominance by taking away any access to a benders element when imprisoning them. also while sub-bending techniques are much stronger with other elements rather than fire, it takes exceptional talent and training to perform them; i would argue firebending is initially the most powerful element amongst new or unskilled benders
You can't take air away from an airbender... Also you can lock a fire bender in a very cold place where it's so cold that they no longer can bend fire, as shown in TLoK :)

Yeah.... Blood bending being this hard dark and very time limited thing is a powerful narrative. And the spreading of its power to all times of the day MIGHT have weakened this, keep note that Yakone, Ammon and Tarlokk are special. They put in crazy amounts. Yakone basically tortured his sons to learn bloodbending Korra specifically weakened firebending by making lightning ubiquitous. Lightning was special in TLA. And lightning redirection even more so coz you need to put yourself in great risk to learn. But Korra sort of killed it.

Only one family line hid and protected the ability and made it stronger. I think it's insinuated that most any strong/talented water bender COULD do it but it requires a level of coldness/desire for violence that is somewhat antithetical to the water tribe's communal, collaborative nature. Which is probably why it's "forbidden" in the first place

It’s just an issue of finding a responsible teacher, instead of someone who will manipulate or abuse you for not wanting to learn (like Hama and Yakone, who corrupted the “communal” aspect). And by collaborative, I mean “Person A bloodbends a target to stay in place, Person B walks up to deal a finishing blow). In order to be properly communal, the student and teacher both need to be willing to reach this new level of power. The teacher can also feel disappointed at a refusal to learn, but they *must* respect the refusal. Basically, like-minded waterbenders can be communal, but becoming a bloodbending master means finding a balance between coldness, restraint, and discipline, (I think) instead of becoming more powerful/skilled
Blood bendings super rare so cant really lump it in with the whole water tribe of course they can live in harmony with the other nations,but if blood bending was typical than the fire nations would have been beat a long time before the last avater series

On top of the metal bending like situation of not knowing you could, blood bending is also shown to be incredibly difficult. Pretty much everyone would need a full moon to even have a chance of blood bending, so even if it was taught to every water bender, they would only be overpowered about 1/30th of the time, and only a certain portion of them who would even be capable of doing it at all.
Brother, earth benders just drop you in a pit and crush you, so if i had an army i would have earth bender just make massive potholes and trapping tens to hundreds of soldiers, then crushing them, making them one of the strongest bending forms.

They are strong but they can't spread. You put earthbenders on a ship or an airship and they are as good as non benders. Watertribes really have to stay close to natural wild water to do their strongest attack. Probably that is why they live in tribes in places where are the most water. They really go from unstopable force of nature to vunarable mortals in minutes if you displace them
Yes needing earth is a huge nerf when you spend 90% of your time on the ground. Ok cool you can believe that. Also water benders can bend water from the air and plants around them so it’s not like they are completely vulnerable if you jump them in a street.

I think one of the reasons fire is categorized as weak is cuz the antagonists used it. if you recall In Tu zin, Azula as a fire bender was able to stop 4 benders (katara, Aang, Zuko, and Toph) with a fire shield. Bending is completely reliant on mastery. a weak bloodbender would fold to a stronger/more experienced fire bender

When you think about it all forms of bending can be pretty overpowered if in the right hands. Air bending was shown capable of bending the oxygen out of someone’s body and leaving them a corpse, water bending was shown able to bend the blood out of its victims. If we follow this trend it’s safe to say that earth bending could possibly very well bend the minerals within someone’s body.
Fire bending has the lowest ceiling out of all the bending elements, with the least amount of op hax abilities. But it has the highest floor. No matter the environment or architecture, fire benders can bend freely. (The only exceptions being sub zero temperatures, but even then high level firebenders can regulate their body temperature) Even when they’re restrained or bound, they can bend with minimal body movement. And while air benders may be able to do many of these things as well, fire benders also are able to create more of the element that they’re able to bend out of nothing. Blood bending (for this series) was really rare and only able to be done during a full moon. I feel like water has its limitations because you can take a water bender from a source and (albeit harder) the same for earth benders (since it's literally everywhere).
Imagine azulas fire was so hot it turned earth ending projectiles into ash or dust and turned water into steam and just simply turns air into gas to fuel it's fire even stronger

Cause fire bending is so fast and fierce that making defence agaist them is a hassle to begin with. I don't really get why people think fire bending is weaker than other bending techniques. It's offensive power is nothing to scoff at. You must remember that bender is just a normal people with elemental power, not super human with high resilience, so a fire ball and a boulder is equally deadly. Cause in matter of fact, you are equally death got shot by a gun or a cannon. And as we see in Avatar battle, fire bender always is the offensive ones with its high attack speed and large coverage range forced other bender to defence . By the time other bender can pick up a rock, make a water stream, the fire bender can shoot 2 fire balls to their face. Not to mention, fire bender can draw fire seemingly out of no where, not limited to their environment like other bender. Finally, people always forget that all these thing are called Bending techniques, NOT elemental control. People have to do funny dance to control the element, not control by their will. Fire bending techniques surpass all others by their short incantation with acceptable damage. It's only rival by air bending but air bender are pacifist. People always think they can used some bending techniques differently and making one bending techniques OP but they are not realized that they are following and witness top bender of each elements and what they showed are literally the finest move people at that time can pulled up of. It's bending techniques, not X-men super power.
Earth benders are equal/better than water benders because they can bend metal and they can bend the calcium in bones so they are kind of like blood bending but with bones.
Fire bender are underestimated, They can create their own fire (so it is above water and earth in that category) It is the most offensive element (fire do a lot of damage, you have to block or avoid it) and lightning can one shot everyone if landed properly You have one of best mobility with fire (even mobility in the air) It is very easy to power up with weather conditions (day is easier than night) And I think the sub bending heat could be discovered (heating the body of your opponent, which can be legal and as powerful as blood bending)
If you can be like: Blood has water in it so bloodbending makes sense... You could just as easily be like: Bones have minerals in it so bone bending makes sense Or You have air in your lungs so air benders should be able to bend the lungs out of your body Or "Fire" is just like... Pure heat energy, so if they can heat things up at will or combust the air around them, then they could just combust your lungs or make your blood boil. The avatar magic system only really works when you don't get to granular about what an element is or what specifically a bender can control. The secondary bending types are a mistake.

Blood bending used by Akon can be done before you can channel Lightning bending. Blood Bender can instantly break bending formation. If Avatar isn't E-rated, Blood Bender can just straight up channel all your blood in head and pop every vein in your brain. Instant Stroke and giving you Brain Death. With Ice Bending variant, Blood Bender can even solidifying your blood thus disrupt the Chi point needed for Bending without need to break the Chi point just to block your bending The Goat Grandma literally told Katara that Blood Bending isn't just for controlling Blood but the Life itself
Why would waterbender live in peace? Simple because very few waterbender can even learn bloodbending. Hama was a powerful water bending master and needed the full moon. Those who don't need a full moon or a moon at all are like one in a million. And psychic bloodbending shouldn't exist in a world where bending was based on martial arts and one of the ass pulls of legend of Korra that made no sense. Just like only a small percentage of earth benders can learn their deadly techniques. This holds true for all elements.
I mean as far as I’m aware with enough training anyone can get to being able to bloodbend. Like bending doesn’t have genetic restrictions once you have a bending type you have the potential to learn all of its subtypes it’s just up to you to learn them. The worse it has is a talent restriction which can be overcome by years of training. Also blood bending is a relatively new technique since Hama was the first user of it and Katara was the second not mention it’s outlawed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the only reason more bloodbenders don’t exist is simply because no one is allowed to learn the technique and without a teacher it’s near impossible to learn alone.
@@joshuafrazier3904 you mention that it takes years of training, even tho the people in avatar are usually training more then people in real life, still, theres only limited few that would even want to put that much time and energy in trainig so often, it requires a lot more then just wanting it, think about the discipline you would need to practice the same thing for hours day in day out and making little improvement... and like you said its outlawed, so they would need to be verry carefull about where and when they train too.... and on top of that, theres little people that wouldnt mind harming others in the way like bloodbending just to get better themselves or have more power
Bro waterbending sucks, the only good thing about it is bloodbending, and even if bloodbending is good only 5 people have done it and 3 of those can do it at any time.
I would like to see the positive/ professional uses of bending explored. Like the acupuncture scene from LOK. I sometimes ponder about how bending could be used in the medical setting. A water bending nurse who could start IVs easily. A metal bending surgeon who could make very precise cuts and stitches. An air bending respiratory care specialist.
I think earf in general is more powerful because it can block/deflect Wawa really good if two people are of equal skill level because earth is substance while Wawa is more fluid you can kinda see that in tophs and kataras personallys
In battle water benders vs earth benders they're would get advantage on eachother from the fact if they're in water or on the ground, were with the same skill winner would allways be a bender with advantage, so water and eart are practically equal.
I feel like water bending is being overrated here. The only strong thing from water bending is blood bending which is an incredibly rare skill which can usually only be done on a full moon other than yakone and his kids and that takes them months if not years of training every full moon to master it to the point of doing it whenever they want
Plus let’s not pretend that azula hasn’t low diffed everyone she has come against other than on her coronation day where she was having a mental breakdown
What I don't like when people say water is the best element just because of psychic day blood bending is they ignore the logistics behind it. With Amon and Tarlock we know they reseaved directed dedicated instruction, geared towards aiding blood bending training later, since their ability to bend was known. Even then it took them years before they could blood bend during the day and Amon was considered a prodigy. If Tarlock wasn't always compared to his brother and put into a normal class i wouldn't be surprised to learn that he was talented as well. Blood bending only seems broken because we only see it used by masters and grand masters.

Fire is not as weak as you think it actually has an advantage. Water and earth have start-up moves before they could use their attacks, leaving them open while fire and air instantly attacks just by any swing at the limbs and fire can burn
Fire Bending his 3(originally 4) sub types: Lightning Combustion and Heat Zuko and Sozen showed how strong bending/controlling ones heat itself can be. Sadly they changed Magma bending, something Sozen did to him just controlling the heat/steam.
One type had steam engines of all sorts and ironclads, another had massive defensive walls, the third temples on the highest peaks, the 4th a city on the sea and a bunch of locals chilling out on the ice pack. On the surface fire is a MASSIVELY versatile system for specialist training (home utilities, steam control, forging, electricity, lighting, and meat puppets having a VERY low tolerance for temperature variances), Earth should be near unstoppable as if you can’t stand anywhere you can’t fight, water is abundant outside of specific or convoluted situations (when skilled enough almost all liveable biomes have humid air) plus the whole 70% water thing and inertial cavitation possibilities (and specially when applied internally, ick, air is the weakest by general application until you take things like particulate abrasion, high velocity flight, guided ballistics and the possibilities of forced vacuums and weather control (direct combat tho it’s more a crowd control system until you get a nice chunk of high pressure dust-blasting going on, basically a gyro circular saw with nothing to block at that point tho water can do the same thing and has mass).
I like this thought, but I think it is important to not just look at the ceiling, but the floor. Yes, the most powerful water bender could potentially be the most powerful bender. And yes, the most powerful fire bender is probably weaker than the most powerful version of any other bender. But the weakest fire bender is more dangerous than the weakest of any other bender. A weak water bender will just get you a little wet, a weak earth bender will throw a rock at you with MAYBE the same force of a normal throw, and a weak air bender will make you feel a bit of a breeze, but a weak fire bender will still set your clothes on fire. Dialing that up, it doesn't take much for a mediocre fire bender to be doing some hefty damage: burning down entire villages with a single punch. Meanwhile the other benders have to dedicate serious effort to weaponize their style, with air bending being easily the most difficult to weaponize, which is likely why it developed as a primarily defensive style. This is why it makes sense that the fire nation could take over. It doesn't require much effort for them to get a large mass to a sufficiently dangerous level whereas the water and air tribes really had to work to become dangerous. The Earth Nation is probably the second easiest to weaponize which is also why they were the best at withstanding the fire nation.
it's likely that all of the four bending types have a similar subbending art like bloodbending. For example, while bloodbending is manpulating the water in our body, we likely have trace amounts of what could be considered earth in our body as well. Similary with airbending. Fire might be a bit mor iffy in that regards, it might be possible to manipulate the chemical reaction within our body between carbon and oxygen, giving us energy, since we are burning the carbon. It could be possible to directly manipulate the electric signals of our nerves with firebending as well. Due to the abundance of water in the human body, bloodbending is likely the easiest to achieve compared to the equivalents from the other forms of bending. I'm also wondering wether or not firebenders are closer to bending pure energy than the other styles. Also I think a good reason why firebenders lack the versatility of the other bending styles might be that firebenders (at least the ones in the firenation) tend to be very aggressive and direct. Why try something else if a fireball to the face does the job just fine.
An Idea for a new op sub bending style for fire bending is Atomic Bending: Basically masters of fire can completely rearrange any objects their fire comes in contact with and essentially remove certain Elements(periodic table) to completely change it. Another way to make it overpowered is by making some characters fire so strong that it can completely destroy things by touching it in less than a second.
What people forget is that the Fire Nation had a very big technological advantage over the other nations. Due to them presumably discovering steam power, Firebending in combat is the weakest style of bending, but it’s by far the most useful technologically. As every person basically has an infinite steam hack as long as water is provided.
I actually prefer water bending though it has its dark side i would use mine to heal and protect. Plus theyre very connected to the spirit world since there bending comes from the spirits moon and ocean. I did a concept story of a water bending avatar so connected to the spirit world that he was able to take a piece of his own and allowed it to live in the spirit world to live peacefully. This avatar died in his late 30,s by an avalanche but saved his friend by shielding him first. That sames friends granddaughter was born as the next avatar in omashu. He cried knowing when she first used the avatar state and traveled with her. He never told her until she saws her incarnations memories and always wondered why she was so close to him more then anyone else. The water bending avatar knew the grandfather as omashu is where he was trianed in earth bending by his master. But they were so close as friends people thought they were brothers, he joined his friend through his journey to master the other elements. He met his wife in the fire nation where they had a daughter. He dies from barbarians attacking the south pole that disturbed a spiritual place that caused the spirits to attack the south. But an avalanche happens because of the conflict and he saved everyone at the cost if his life. In my concept she learned water bending from this avatar in a lake that has a strong connection to the spirit world which the fragment is able to waterbend as the lake is from the spirit world. This fragment protects the spirit barrier in that region which even unalaq doesnt interfere with knowing that this avatar can destroy him easily. A fun fact this avatar would wear warth bending fashions blended with his water tribe clothing as he considered Omashu his secind home.
I really dislike how Korra and the spinoffs handle bending, especially bending subsets. Niche ones like plantbending and sandbending are never brought up, metalbending no longer requires direct contact to work, bloodbending no longer requires the full moon OR MOTION WHICH IS FUCKING AWFUL, and lightningbending is ridiculously trivialized. In the original show, fire had the best advantage over the others because it was the only style that the user could produce. Since waterbenders and earthbenders could easily be separated from their elements (prior to metalbending) and the airbenders were massacred, this left the Fire Nation at a massive advantage. Additionally, since metal required intense heat to manipulate (prior to metalbending), the Fire Nation had an industrial revolution long before the other nations.
biggest weakness of water bending is that you need water fire bending - create fire out of nothing earth bening - earth is everywhere exept air air bending - no comment water bening - "oh no in thirsty so o took out my bening"
Air, Earth, and Water all have near kill hax that kind of make them all equal. Being suffication, bone bending, and psychic blood bending. The thing is, all of these are things you are either born with, have a weakness or require intense training. You have to be born and train with bone bending, be born with and also train a ton for psychic blood bending, or have to stand still the entire time that you sufficate someone with airbending. I am pretty sure Bone Bending has only 1 known user (could be wrong.). Blood Bending has 5-ish users, 3 of which are psychic blood benders who are all dead along with their training methods. Zahere (not sure if thats how you spell it) was one single air bender who was an outsider airbending culture which enabled him to comit war crimes with the bending style. While these are the peaks of bending they arent really something everyone gets and are more like per character buffs to make them be able to compete with the avatar, all of which have failed to do so despite the avatar not using any of these styles. Really I think true bending strength lies in versatility, ease of access, ease of use and power. In which case I think fire is actually the strongest. Fire bending is the second most common bending type next to earth. It doesnt require any special mindsets like earth requiring green lantern level will power. Fire bending relies on strong emotion, usually anger but could theoretically use other emotions like sadness or love or alternatively just breathing. Fire bending doesnt require super precisely preformed techniques like air bending or water bending. Fire bending also doesnt require you to learn multiple variations of your element like with water bending and ice bending. Fire bending is also capable of augmenting your movement like aircbending though to a lesser extent. The only downside to fire bending is that you could theoretically harm yourself, but as long as you use basic fire saftey you are fine. In medieval times when crossbows were invented archers basically were replaced as soon as they could be, they were better, could shoot further, could have better aim, and could shoot more shots per second but because of the fact that crossbows were easier to use they became the most used and more improved upon than bows. First it was crossbows, then it was guns. Fire benders are the same way, lightning bending became common within less than a lifetime in the legend of Korra due to so many people having access to fire bending, the same applies to metal bending to a lesser extent. It will probably continue to only become stronger while still being easier to use as the series goes on.

Iroh actually put it perfectly when zuko how to redirect lightning. It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you take it from only one place, it become rigid and stale. This is the reason Iroh is so in tune with the world and it is also why he is one of the most powerful people in the world. When I say powerful; what I mean is the grasp of the bending styles and mastering these techniques not their “magical potential”. It isn’t always who’s better, it’s about who’s smarter.
We need to see earth and fire bending do some horrific shit like water and air can do. Water has blood bending, air has suffocation, imagine a fire bender just making a dude "spontaneously" combust with just his mind, completely undetected. Or an earth bender ripping out someone's metal implants like Magneto. Then the brutality balance can be restored
I always wondered why firebenders don’t have psychic heat bending. Like able to raise the temperature of anywhere they are. The fanbase seems to forget that the fire itself is only part of the problem. The big issue is the actual heat. If you ever been close to something that burns at hundreds of degrees, you’ll know what I’m talking about. This imo does give firebending a defensive ability. No need to even make fire. Just raise the temp up around you and no one can come close.
If we follow real life logic, a boulder will break every single bone you have, wind sends you off flying, and just like a boulder, a giant hunk of ice will break you too, heat of fire is the least of the reality problems.

If bending played by real life rules, all the elements would be REALLY fucking lethal. Being burned alive is horrific. Air is everywhere, imagine people just creating a vacuum and causing you to explode from pressure. A 20 pound rock thrown at 50 miles an hour, on the lighter end of what we see in avatar, would punch straight through your chest. People tend to forget water is really heavy, just those basic water whips we see could cause heavy damage, not to mention being impaled by ice. Some of the stuff we see in the show SHOULD HAVE easily killed people, but because it's a PG show they aren't killed or at the very least maimed.
I find it interesting when people say water is the most powerful because of its op potential but so few actually have these powers and abilities like metal and lightning become very common a bending style isn't strong because of its potential but because of what the average user can do
If you break it down to its base level, they all have something that can significantly affect the human body. Water gets the water in the body(I,e. Blood plasma, the water within the cells, etc). Air gets any gases in the body(blood gas, breath, and so on). Earth controls minerals(calcium, iron, and the like). Fire gets energy(electrical pathways, hearth rhythm, etc). So if they are skilled enough, they could all do something akin to blood bending.
Fire can be pulled anywhere while water is limited by supply. Likewise it takes the right teacher at best to quickly develop your blood bending skill, on your own it would take having enough self awareness of the water within one's body to have a gokd start of lewrning blood bending as well as paying attention to when one is strongest in using it. Put under the right circumstances like katara's teacher they'd have enough then to properly learn cause the only focus is to adapt in order to get the best of the situation one is in. Cauee without a significant motive no one would care about using blood bending.

Fire bending should be way more terrifying if it followed real life logic. Even if you block the attacks, the heat by itself is a big problem, and lightning bending should be pretty much an "I win button", benders aren't super fast, so they shouldn't be dodging lightning like that. Of course you can try and predict your oponent movement to dodge, but that's a lot harder than dodging projectiles. Also, while it's possible to survive a lightning strike, it''s not as possible to keep fighting after one.
Your straight up wrong characters in Avatar are super human blatantly and multiple characters have feats of reacting to lightning. The greatest is Iroh when he sensed a lightning strike coming and was surprised by it but still managed to deflect it while on Zuko’s ship. He knew it was coming and the where it would strike but not which direction meaning he had to register the bolt and get in position to deflect it and not kill himself showing some relativity to lightning. Also Lightning bending has a decently obvious charge for most people giving you time to react and either block it cause unless you are Azula your lighting isn’t explosive or dodge it if you’re an airbender.
Even in Korra, Lightning has some chargeup time. S o you definitely can react if you are aware of the stances a firebender needs to lightning bend.

The divination could be expanded on. There could be temperature bending, even light bending. A firebender who could shoot a rail gun blast, heal people, or even become invisible

As for dodging lightning, your argument would apply to literally anything slower than lightning, i.e any other bending attack in existence. As it is, only a couple of people have ever dodged lightning, and that was by watching their opponent's hands and dodging before they fired.

I was going to mention that about most bending but if you read the kyoshi novel you know earth bending doesn't have that problem, air bending is invisible,and have you tried dodging a wave? Water splashes, if they spammed that move there's nothing you can do, even ignoring blood bending. Fire bending has a fire wall but that would only be useful in Inclosed spaces unless they get in close range, at that point you either die or go out like a kamikaze(which is what should have happened when aang tried blocking it with air, it should have killed them, it literally exploded.)

What do you mean "earth doesn't have that problem"? It is way slower than lightning, and no faster than a fireball. Airbending may be invisible, but the amount of times people have dodged or blocked airbending makes it pretty clear they can either see the dust or are just trained to watch their opponent's hands. As for water, what is the splash going to do? Only the main projectile will do any damage, the splash will just get the target wet.
You could make an argument for any element having the edge over the others. In the case of fire, it's advantages are instant serious damage, and the ability to produce it from the body. If lightning is "weak" because it can be dodged or redirected, that makes every element weak for those same reasons.
They nerfed lightnings effect so bad in avatar universe. Lightning bending is the counter to all water bending PERIOD. If you stood in a puddle of water and either lightning struck it or an extension cord was dropped in it you will not survive. Electricity is so dangerous. They really nerfed it in avatar universe

The balance is found in their abundance and utility. Despite the versatility of water it's the first to be caught without ammunition and requires a mastery to draw water from other sources or blood bend. Earth is very abundant but not very versatile. Air is the most abundant but lacks the lethality of the others. Fire is the most versatile, can be self produced, and extremely deadly all at just a beginner level.
Air bending has the lethality it's just not utilized by the culture since they are pacifists. Imagine a dude flying up to a building full of soldiers/people/etc, and making a massive vacuum covering every entrance, every window and mercing everyone inside without even needing to see them
Also earth could be way more versatile, I feel it was done the weakest of all the elements but hints of it show through. I envision a full grown Toph being capable of stomping her foot, turning the earth underneath an opponent into sand, forming a huge fist to raise them up then turning it back into solid/compacted earth and crushing them inside. I see being able to draw magma through the crust, launching it like cannonballs at ships or groups of enemies
But sadly we mostly just get Big Step, Big Boulder save for Toph. Even Bumi feels pretty standard in how he delivers attacks despite his clear ability

fire has the advantage of firebenders being able to create their own fire, in the show they assert dominance by taking away any access to a benders element when imprisoning them. also while sub-bending techniques are much stronger with other elements rather than fire, it takes exceptional talent and training to perform them; i would argue firebending is initially the most powerful element amongst new or unskilled benders

I think it’s predominantly scaled by the number of benders. The Fire Nation has enough benders to consider entire regiments expendable, or at least the individuals expendable.

I think it's insinuated that most any strong/talented water bender COULD do it but it requires a level of coldness/desire for violence that is somewhat antithetical to the water tribe's communal, collaborative nature. It’s just an issue of finding a responsible teacher, instead of someone who will manipulate or abuse you for not wanting to learn (like Hama and Yakone, who corrupted the “communal” aspect). And by collaborative, I mean “Person A bloodbends a target to stay in place, Person B walks up to deal a finishing blow). In order to be properly communal, the student and teacher both need to be willing to reach this new level of power. The teacher can also feel disappointed at a refusal to learn, but they *must* respect the refusal. Basically, like-minded waterbenders can be communal, but becoming a bloodbending master means finding a balance between coldness, restraint, and discipline, (I think) instead of becoming more powerful/skilled

On top of the metal bending like situation of not knowing you could, blood bending is also shown to be incredibly difficult. Pretty much everyone would need a full moon to even have a chance of blood bending, so even if it was taught to every water bender, they would only be overpowered about 1/30th of the time, and only a certain portion of them who would even be capable of doing it at all.
Brother, earth benders just drop you in a pit and crush you, so if i had an army i would have earth bender just make massive potholes and trapping tens to hundreds of soldiers, then crushing them, making them one of the strongest bending forms.

I think one of the reasons fire is categorized as weak is cuz the antagonists used it. if you recall In Tu zin, Azula as a fire bender was able to stop 4 benders (katara, Aang, Zuko, and Toph) with a fire shield. Bending is completely reliant on mastery. a weak bloodbender would fold to a stronger/more experienced fire bender

When you think about it all forms of bending can be pretty overpowered if in the right hands. Air bending was shown capable of bending the oxygen out of someone’s body and leaving them a corpse, water bending was shown able to bend the blood out of its victims. If we follow this trend it’s safe to say that earth bending could possibly very well bend the minerals within someone’s body.
I think every type of bending could be op, it just depends on how much effort the user puts in

Fire bending has the lowest ceiling out of all the bending elements, with the least amount of op hax abilities. But it has the highest floor. No matter the environment or architecture, fire benders can bend freely. (The only exceptions being sub zero temperatures, but even then high level firebenders can regulate their body temperature) Even when they’re restrained or bound, they can bend with minimal body movement. And while air benders may be able to do many of these things as well, fire benders also are able to create more of the element that they’re able to bend out of nothing. Blood bending (for this series) was really rare and only able to be done during a full moon. I feel like water has its limitations because you can take a water bender from a source and (albeit harder) the same for earth benders (since it's literally everywhere).

Cause fire bending is so fast and fierce that making defence agaist them is a hassle to begin with.
I don't really get why people think fire bending is weaker than other bending techniques. It's offensive power is nothing to scoff at. You must remember that bender is just a normal people with elemental power, not super human with high resilience, so a fire ball and a boulder is equally deadly. Cause in matter of fact, you are equally death got shot by a gun or a cannon.
And as we see in Avatar battle, fire bender always is the offensive ones with its high attack speed and large coverage range forced other bender to defence . By the time other bender can pick up a rock, make a water stream, the fire bender can shoot 2 fire balls to their face.
Not to mention, fire bender can draw fire seemingly out of no where, not limited to their environment like other bender.
Finally, people always forget that all these thing are called Bending techniques, NOT elemental control.
People have to do funny dance to control the element, not control by their will.
Fire bending techniques surpass all others by their short incantation with acceptable damage. It's only rival by air bending but air bender are pacifist.

Earth benders are equal/better than water benders because they can bend metal and they can bend the calcium in bones so they are kind of like blood bending but with bones.

It is very easy to power up with weather conditions (day is easier than night)
And I think the sub bending heat could be discovered (heating the body of your opponent, which can be legal and as powerful as blood bending)

"Fire" is just like... Pure heat energy, so if they can heat things up at will or combust the air around them, then they could just combust your lungs or make your blood boil.
The avatar magic system only really works when you don't get to granular about what an element is or what specifically a bender can control.
The secondary bending types are a mistake.
Bloodbending literally the peak of Bending. But the problem only few can use it during Full Moon or even without Full Moon
Some say Lightning is instant death, nope. Blood bending used by Akon can be done before you can channel Lightning bending. Blood Bender can instantly break bending formation.
If Avatar isn't E-rated, Blood Bender can just straight up channel all your blood in head and pop every vein in your brain. Instant Stroke and giving you Brain Death. With Ice Bending variant, Blood Bender can even solidifying your blood thus disrupt the Chi point needed for Bending without need to break the Chi point just to block your bending

Why would waterbender live in peace? Simple because very few waterbender can even learn bloodbending. Hama was a powerful water bending master and needed the full moon. Those who don't need a full moon or a moon at all are like one in a million. And psychic bloodbending shouldn't exist in a world where bending was based on martial arts and one of the ass pulls of legend of Korra that made no sense.
Just like only a small percentage of earth benders can learn their deadly techniques.

I mean as far as I’m aware with enough training anyone can get to being able to bloodbend. Like bending doesn’t have genetic restrictions once you have a bending type you have the potential to learn all of its subtypes it’s just up to you to learn them. The worse it has is a talent restriction which can be overcome by years of training. Also blood bending is a relatively new technique since Hama was the first user of it and Katara was the second not mention it’s outlawed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the only reason more bloodbenders don’t exist is simply because no one is allowed to learn the technique and without a teacher it’s near impossible to learn alone.
@@joshuafrazier3904 you mention that it takes years of training, even tho the people in avatar are usually training more then people in real life, still, theres only limited few that would even want to put that much time and energy in trainig so often, it requires a lot more then just wanting it, think about the discipline you would need to practice the same thing for hours day in day out and making little improvement...
and like you said its outlawed, so they would need to be verry carefull about where and when they train too.... and on top of that, theres little people that wouldnt mind harming others in the way like bloodbending just to get better themselves or have more power

Bro waterbending sucks, the only good thing about it is bloodbending, and even if bloodbending is good only 5 people have done it and 3 of those can do it at any time.
I would like to see the positive/ professional uses of bending explored. Like the acupuncture scene from LOK. I sometimes ponder about how bending could be used in the medical setting. A water bending nurse who could start IVs easily. A metal bending surgeon who could make very precise cuts and stitches. An air bending respiratory care specialist.
In my opinion of the most powerfull bending is:
1. Air
2. Water
3. Earth
4. Fire
I think earf in general is more powerful because it can block/deflect Wawa really good if two people are of equal skill level because earth is substance while Wawa is more fluid you can kinda see that in tophs and kataras personallys
In battle water benders vs earth benders they're would get advantage on eachother from the fact if they're in water or on the ground, were with the same skill winner would allways be a bender with advantage, so water and eart are practically equal.

What I don't like when people say water is the best element just because of psychic day blood bending is they ignore the logistics behind it. With Amon and Tarlock we know they reseaved directed dedicated instruction, geared towards aiding blood bending training later, since their ability to bend was known. Even then it took them years before they could blood bend during the day and Amon was considered a prodigy. If Tarlock wasn't always compared to his brother and put into a normal class i wouldn't be surprised to learn that he was talented as well.
Blood bending only seems broken because we only see it used by masters and grand masters.

Fire Bending his 3(originally 4) sub types:
Lightning
Combustion
and Heat
Zuko and Sozen showed how strong bending/controlling ones heat itself can be.
Sadly they changed Magma bending, something Sozen did to him just controlling the heat/steam.
One type had steam engines of all sorts and ironclads, another had massive defensive walls, the third temples on the highest peaks, the 4th a city on the sea and a bunch of locals chilling out on the ice pack.
On the surface fire is a MASSIVELY versatile system for specialist training (home utilities, steam control, forging, electricity, lighting, and meat puppets having a VERY low tolerance for temperature variances), Earth should be near unstoppable as if you can’t stand anywhere you can’t fight, water is abundant outside of specific or convoluted situations (when skilled enough almost all liveable biomes have humid air) plus the whole 70% water thing and inertial cavitation possibilities (and specially when applied internally, ick, air is the weakest by general application until you take things like particulate abrasion, high velocity flight, guided ballistics and the possibilities of forced vacuums and weather control (direct combat tho it’s more a crowd control system until you get a nice chunk of high pressure dust-blasting going on, basically a gyro circular saw with nothing to block at that point tho water can do the same thing and has mass).
I like this thought, but I think it is important to not just look at the ceiling, but the floor. Yes, the most powerful water bender could potentially be the most powerful bender. And yes, the most powerful fire bender is probably weaker than the most powerful version of any other bender.
But the weakest fire bender is more dangerous than the weakest of any other bender. A weak water bender will just get you a little wet, a weak earth bender will throw a rock at you with MAYBE the same force of a normal throw, and a weak air bender will make you feel a bit of a breeze, but a weak fire bender will still set your clothes on fire.
Dialing that up, it doesn't take much for a mediocre fire bender to be doing some hefty damage: burning down entire villages with a single punch.
Meanwhile the other benders have to dedicate serious effort to weaponize their style, with air bending being easily the most difficult to weaponize, which is likely why it developed as a primarily defensive style.
This is why it makes sense that the fire nation could take over. It doesn't require much effort for them to get a large mass to a sufficiently dangerous level whereas the water and air tribes really had to work to become dangerous. The Earth Nation is probably the second easiest to weaponize which is also why they were the best at withstanding the fire nation.
it's likely that all of the four bending types have a similar subbending art like bloodbending. For example, while bloodbending is manpulating the water in our body, we likely have trace amounts of what could be considered earth in our body as well. Similary with airbending. Fire might be a bit mor iffy in that regards, it might be possible to manipulate the chemical reaction within our body between carbon and oxygen, giving us energy, since we are burning the carbon. It could be possible to directly manipulate the electric signals of our nerves with firebending as well.
Due to the abundance of water in the human body, bloodbending is likely the easiest to achieve compared to the equivalents from the other forms of bending.
I'm also wondering wether or not firebenders are closer to bending pure energy than the other styles.
Also I think a good reason why firebenders lack the versatility of the other bending styles might be that firebenders (at least the ones in the firenation) tend to be very aggressive and direct. Why try something else if a fireball to the face does the job just fine.
An Idea for a new op sub bending style for fire bending is Atomic Bending: Basically masters of fire can completely rearrange any objects their fire comes in contact with and essentially remove certain Elements(periodic table) to completely change it. Another way to make it overpowered is by making some characters fire so strong that it can completely destroy things by touching it in less than a second.
What people forget is that the Fire Nation had a very big technological advantage over the other nations. Due to them presumably discovering steam power, Firebending in combat is the weakest style of bending, but it’s by far the most useful technologically. As every person basically has an infinite steam hack as long as water is provided.
I actually prefer water bending though it has its dark side i would use mine to heal and protect. Plus theyre very connected to the spirit world since there bending comes from the spirits moon and ocean.
I did a concept story of a water bending avatar so connected to the spirit world that he was able to take a piece of his own and allowed it to live in the spirit world to live peacefully. This avatar died in his late 30,s by an avalanche but saved his friend by shielding him first. That sames friends granddaughter was born as the next avatar in omashu. He cried knowing when she first used the avatar state and traveled with her. He never told her until she saws her incarnations memories and always wondered why she was so close to him more then anyone else.
The water bending avatar knew the grandfather as omashu is where he was trianed in earth bending by his master. But they were so close as friends people thought they were brothers, he joined his friend through his journey to master the other elements. He met his wife in the fire nation where they had a daughter. He dies from barbarians attacking the south pole that disturbed a spiritual place that caused the spirits to attack the south. But an avalanche happens because of the conflict and he saved everyone at the cost if his life.
In my concept she learned water bending from this avatar in a lake that has a strong connection to the spirit world which the fragment is able to waterbend as the lake is from the spirit world. This fragment protects the spirit barrier in that region which even unalaq doesnt interfere with knowing that this avatar can destroy him easily. A fun fact this avatar would wear warth bending fashions blended with his water tribe clothing as he considered Omashu his secind home.
Theres only a few fully awoken water benders. Thats what makes them live in harmony. They all aren’t blood benders
I really dislike how Korra and the spinoffs handle bending, especially bending subsets. Niche ones like plantbending and sandbending are never brought up, metalbending no longer requires direct contact to work, bloodbending no longer requires the full moon OR MOTION WHICH IS FUCKING AWFUL, and lightningbending is ridiculously trivialized.
In the original show, fire had the best advantage over the others because it was the only style that the user could produce. Since waterbenders and earthbenders could easily be separated from their elements (prior to metalbending) and the airbenders were massacred, this left the Fire Nation at a massive advantage. Additionally, since metal required intense heat to manipulate (prior to metalbending), the Fire Nation had an industrial revolution long before the other nations.

Air, Earth, and Water all have near kill hax that kind of make them all equal. Being suffication, bone bending, and psychic blood bending. The thing is, all of these are things you are either born with, have a weakness or require intense training. You have to be born and train with bone bending, be born with and also train a ton for psychic blood bending, or have to stand still the entire time that you sufficate someone with airbending. I am pretty sure Bone Bending has only 1 known user (could be wrong.). Blood Bending has 5-ish users, 3 of which are psychic blood benders who are all dead along with their training methods. Zahere (not sure if thats how you spell it) was one single air bender who was an outsider airbending culture which enabled him to comit war crimes with the bending style. While these are the peaks of bending they arent really something everyone gets and are more like per character buffs to make them be able to compete with the avatar, all of which have failed to do so despite the avatar not using any of these styles. Really I think true bending strength lies in versatility, ease of access, ease of use and power. In which case I think fire is actually the strongest. Fire bending is the second most common bending type next to earth. It doesnt require any special mindsets like earth requiring green lantern level will power. Fire bending relies on strong emotion, usually anger but could theoretically use other emotions like sadness or love or alternatively just breathing. Fire bending doesnt require super precisely preformed techniques like air bending or water bending. Fire bending also doesnt require you to learn multiple variations of your element like with water bending and ice bending. Fire bending is also capable of augmenting your movement like aircbending though to a lesser extent. The only downside to fire bending is that you could theoretically harm yourself, but as long as you use basic fire saftey you are fine. In medieval times when crossbows were invented archers basically were replaced as soon as they could be, they were better, could shoot further, could have better aim, and could shoot more shots per second but because of the fact that crossbows were easier to use they became the most used and more improved upon than bows. First it was crossbows, then it was guns. Fire benders are the same way, lightning bending became common within less than a lifetime in the legend of Korra due to so many people having access to fire bending, the same applies to metal bending to a lesser extent. It will probably continue to only become stronger while still being easier to use as the series goes on.

Iroh actually put it perfectly when zuko how to redirect lightning. It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you take it from only one place, it become rigid and stale. This is the reason Iroh is so in tune with the world and it is also why he is one of the most powerful people in the world. When I say powerful; what I mean is the grasp of the bending styles and mastering these techniques not their “magical potential”. It isn’t always who’s better, it’s about who’s smarter.

I always wondered why firebenders don’t have psychic heat bending. Like able to raise the temperature of anywhere they are. The fanbase seems to forget that the fire itself is only part of the problem. The big issue is the actual heat. If you ever been close to something that burns at hundreds of degrees, you’ll know what I’m talking about. This imo does give firebending a defensive ability. No need to even make fire. Just raise the temp up around you and no one can come close.

If we follow real life logic, a boulder will break every single bone you have, wind sends you off flying, and just like a boulder, a giant hunk of ice will break you too, heat of fire is the least of the reality problems.

If we give firebending some imagination we can say that fire can potentially be condensed into an actual death laser, or a create heat so hot it'll melt everything around it including it's opponents

A 20 pound rock thrown at 50 miles an hour, on the lighter end of what we see in avatar, would punch straight through your chest.
People tend to forget water is really heavy, just those basic water whips we see could cause heavy damage, not to mention being impaled by ice.
Some of the stuff we see in the show SHOULD HAVE easily killed people, but because it's a PG show they aren't killed or at the very least maimed.
I find it interesting when people say water is the most powerful because of its op potential but so few actually have these powers and abilities like metal and lightning become very common a bending style isn't strong because of its potential but because of what the average user can do

If you break it down to its base level, they all have something that can significantly affect the human body.
Water gets the water in the body(I,e. Blood plasma, the water within the cells, etc).
Air gets any gases in the body(blood gas, breath, and so on).
Earth controls minerals(calcium, iron, and the like).
Fire gets energy(electrical pathways, hearth rhythm, etc). So if they are skilled enough, they could all do something akin to blood bending.

Fire can be pulled anywhere while water is limited by supply. Likewise it takes the right teacher at best to quickly develop your blood bending skill, on your own it would take having enough self awareness of the water within one's body to have a gokd start of lewrning blood bending as well as paying attention to when one is strongest in using it. Put under the right circumstances like katara's teacher they'd have enough then to properly learn cause the only focus is to adapt in order to get the best of the situation one is in. Cauee without a significant motive no one would care about using blood bending.
