Ah. I decided to look at the gear in the PoB after you said this. No wonder you didn't go over the rares in the video. This stuff is boosted. T2-3 4+ stat rares in mapping with eldritch implicits, perfect jewels, then Arcane Cloak, Frost Shield, and Flasks are active. 20/20 jewels in Act 10. I'm going to have to go through and make a whole new tier of gear for my new player friend between Act 10 and Mapping. Thats dozens of k in ehp extra and hundreds of K of dps.
@@KingOfHell94 They specifically said this isn't new player friendly. the 200 all res is just so they don't have to go and put specific res on every single gear piece and make people think that specific res in required on that gear piece. And yes, the gear in the POB is good. The whole point of putting gear in there is to show you what to work towards.
@@DKIncorporation problem is that most rares are filled with damage mods and there's no space for res mods, ucant get all those damage mods AND cap res at the same time, it will require mirror gear if thats even possible lol and numbers are giga fake, go ahead and turn off all the conditional stuff, damage goes 1/5 and survivability goes like 1/10 and thats with almost mirror tier gear
I played Ice nova of frostbolts. You can play without arcanist brand. You dont even need slower projectiles, returning projectiles is better. With enought aoe, you can have 80% dps uptime as opposed to arcanist brand, this will allow smoother map progression.
the interaction is specifically with return proj and arca brand, it reduces the range at which frostbolt starts to return, which means you get way more uptime, while also being much smoother in single target. you could definitely consider gem swapping for clear but playing it last league it really was not that bad.
automation tip: trigger socketed gems while focused on helmet, then all you need to do is bind focus and it will cast them all at once without the need for automation support
intresting, but this still a suffix. And in the end you press focus or arc brand so i see no benefits here. On suffixes you still need spell suppress, chaos res etc.
Why not look at the actual eHP in POB folks? (Here, I looked for you). Goratha is a super veteran HC racer that does Gauntlet. You're not going to be playing an 18k eHP build. He has both an ES/EVA option and an AR option. ES/EVA will be a bit better for mapping and overall quality of life. eHP = Effective HP. It's your HP values that include your builds various forms of mitigation; your basic stuff like life, mana, es, evasion, armor, max res etc -- then stuff like suppression, leech, mind over matter, corrupted soul (glorious vanity), your phys taken as, resists etc etc. Basically, when you're looking into whether a build is tanky or not, you look towards eHP as a general indicator and then you look at your max hits, Phys, Elemental (Fire/Cold/Light) & Chaos to get a better understanding of how tanky you are vs. different types of damage. Generally, left-side builds struggle a bit with Elemental mitigation, right-side builds struggle with armor (think about what sort of defensive passives are located on the tree). Physical & Chaos are a bit more difficult to mitigate. Physical Damage is its own weird niche in PoE because it doesn't have a resistance to mitigate for it. The most common way to "solve" this is to shift Physical Damage to an Elemental Damage (for which you have resistance). This is why you see things like Lightning Coil or Cloak of Flame used more often these days. A10 eHP = 135k eHP Mapping = 254k eHP (by red maps, obviously). Endgame ES/EV = 540k eHP Endgame = 490k eHP (armor version, perhaps)? Goratha tends to like lots of different options. There's a setup with a Glorious Vanity, Doryani (Corrupted Soul) ~ The ES/EV. He recognizes variants excel at different things...
@@chadwilliams4373 in all honesty, if you don't know what this comment says you should probably not play this build lmao or at least be mindful that you need to pay a little more attention to details if you wanna try. He's saying you'll be more than fine, you have more ways to stay tanky but you need to know if you build armour, evasion and/or ES, meaning you need to pay attention to your bases. You can't just fit an item with good stats, it needs to be an armour base if you're building armour, or an evasion and energy shield base if you're going that route. The bases should reliably be the best bases at endgame as well as PoE has different bases depending on your level. eHP means effective HP, so basically you'll either have 540k effective HP or 490k eHP. So basically, if you're a casual, you need to pay a little more attention to your gear and not just mindlessly go on trade and buy whatever stats fit you without thinking about what base it is.
Have to give Goratha some praise. I have done his LA build and Glacial Gammer. Both fantastic and super smooth, if you follow this guide you're in good hands!
Planning to level with archmage firestorm myself, been testing things and firestorm feels really good. New archmage will give roughly 150-450 more flat damage over the current one during the campaign and it's already kinda nuts. Basic firestorm feels better than the transfigured versions during the campaign but with high cast speed I think archmage firestorm of pelting will be exceptionally strong with heirophant's increased aoe. My initial plan this league had been reverse snapshot archmage FS of pelting but since that functionality is gone my endgame is kinda up in the air lol. going to league start a mjolner build but idk what I'll do after.

@@SaGboy_ make sure you’re using arcanist brand on bosses, lets you cast 1 brand then you can just spam ice nova. I’ve also got arcane cloak supported by Automation which is really nice if your mana regen can support it. Valakos sign is a good damage bump if you can afford to slot it in as well. Early on I’d make sure you get cast speed on your gear and/or anoint cast speed because it’s super important for this build since we’re essentially 4x’ing each ice nova cast off our frost bolts
for anyone wondering, I have built this 100% to the POB/guide and no... it does not tank everything. Do not fall for the bait. It's a lot of investment that will not make you immortal. Even with mageblood, proge flask etc. The title says 'tanks everything' that means you can eat all damage and you really cant. You die to any degen, a lot of mods on T17 will still kill you. Its a fun build but the dps is not 'HUGE' and it does not 'TANK' everything. My hexblast inquisitor was just as tanky and did 140 million dps vs this guys 14 million dps.
Honestly the fact this is a cold build im tempted to go it i really love cold builds and it would be something new than my 8th leaguestart of wintertide brand and so i could be sad my brand is still the only one without a transfigured gem aside from the support brand for another league maybe more
So apparently I played PoE for 3000 hours, but I never killed an Uber Boss or had a build with more than 2 million DPS, I guess this disqualifies me from playing this build as I still count myself into the "beginner" camp.
One of the funniest build i've ever tried. Really, league start this one is kinda hell of a fun ( when you arrive at act 5 with sigil of power and firestorm ). Big thanks to Goratha for this awesome build.

I still might give it a shot though! In other arpgs I typically enjoy melee builds. Is something like WW Barb from D3/4 available in PoE? Or maybe a paladin-esque build? Look for "Boneshater Juggernaut" it's a very satisfying melee build to play. It falls off a little bit in the very very endgame, but since this is your first league it should be a nice introduction.
True melee in PoE is in a bit of a bad spot. You can make it work, but it requires a lot of currency investment and a really good weapon. Newbies will typically struggle to get a decent enough weapon to progress into the endgame bosses.
Let me clarify what "not good for new players" means. Simply that you need to take a bit more time to think about gear and may need to do a little learning. The good news is that the PoB (build planner) that Zizaran's build collabs provide usually gives so much info for new players to follow including step by step how to advance campaign and probably simple crafting guides if you don't want to learn how to use the trading website. TLDR this build won't be too hard for a new player, just make sure you follow the guide closely and you will be fine.
Do yourself a favor and don't play melee. Or, if you like the idea, why not, try the cyclone builds. FYI: If you die in 0.1 s sometimes it's because you were not bleed immune (took me a while to figure this out back then, because poe does not tell you why you died).
This video (and the PoB i guess) may want a small disclaimer update, only because the price of Ice Nova of Frost Bolts has gotten quite high, so it's unlikely that anyone starting late and not going super hard will be able to afford / easily access the core ability by act 10 as is suggested
@@rafaelmiguel4173 I'm sure Zizaran mentioned in the video that you can attempt to get the Transfigured gem in Normal Lab, but preferably, you should farm Merciless for it since you do have the option to get the Transfigured version of whichever gem you placed in the Divine Font.

Is this better as a starter compared to Ball lightning archmage ? I like the chill and freeze potential but it might take a lot of time to get the Ice Niva of Frostbokts from lab.

Archmage without full mana stacking tech is trash imo. If you wanna play Ice Nova just grab Jungroan's Gauntlet character and swap some defense for dmg if you want.
This build would not have worked with archmage until this league since you would OOM immediately and return proj wasn't a thing until recently. What part of this build did you theorycraft a few years ago?
@@pythagorasabc At the time (might still be the case) the frostbolt interaction bypassed the normal casting restrictions of spell echo on ice nova, which made me think it had promise, but after some testing with pledge of hands it was indeed letting me do only one casting animation and get four ice novas, but there was a fixed time delay between the repeated novas and it didn't seem that casting repeatedly applied all of the ice novas that it should have casted. And like the others have mentioned, returning proj wasn't really accessible to apply to frostbolt, and they sped up their proj speed as they flew. Plus arcanist brand wasn't a thing at the time so it ended up being way too clunky to keep frostbolts near the target. I don't remember exactly when it was that I put time into testing and theorizing about this but it was definitely before the change to triggered spells that made them cost mana. It was probably the first league that Big Ducks had his pledge of hands ball lightning archmage build because I remember that was the reason I had a pledge of hands to do the testing, but I'm not 100% on exactly when it was.
@@supersonicgamerguru I played a version of this build a good 2/3 years ago using pledge of hands. It used the old explode chest which fixed the semi-clunky feel to the clear as you could now blow up screens with that 1 mod. I revisited it in 3.22 (in a small priv league) and it didn't feel anywhere near as good as it used to. The clear felt very clunky without the explode and damage uptime was hit and miss. I do think the brand tech for frostbolt should solve the clunkiness but it'll probably never feel as smooth as a single cast skill. I hear a few mentioning kitava's thirst to automate frostbolt and potentially make it a 1 button build, but we'll see how that plays out.
sweet! I did pick this one to be my leaguestarter for this league The only thing i dont like and dont really get is why everyone suggests Rolling Magma as a starter skill... Honestly i think this is one of the most awkward skills
It's because Rolling Magma isn't bad numbers wise and you can shotgun with the second bounce if you aim correctly. Once you got that down it feels a lot better and not as clunky as it may seem initially.
It's because Rolling Magma / HFT + Flame Wall all have great synergy; Casting Magma through FW = extra damage, HFT through FW = extra damage. You can minimize socket pressure this way and progress the campaign more quickly.
Oh ok... thanks for the clarification. i guess its just a skill issue with me then :P or maybe because i just always try it out for few levels and immediately swap it for other skills like Purifying flame or Spark
You can easily pick the transfigured gems up. Usually you play the campaign anyway rarely on your main gem. 10-15 merc labs and you get your gem before you even reach maps
Started out playing coc ice nova of frostbolts last league and over the course of the league realized vortex of projection is just better in every way on the same build with just swapping the 1 gem. It very clearly wasn't working the way you'd think it should wih the destroying the frostbolts. You'd still do substantially more damage. Curious if this builds gonna be the same case where you're better off dropping ice nova for vortex.
@@GrunthorI wonder if that's the case cause like I mentioned vortex of projection is doing something weird that no one has seemed to be able to figure out but it "feels" like you're getting all the projections damage even though you're not supposed to. For example playing coc and hitting 10.1aps you have nowhere near the frostbolts to sustain the number of projections you'd create but it very clearly does more damage than ice nova even though it shouldn't on paper.
@@Bacon-egg-cheese vortex of projection is a 270% gem, ice nova of frostbolts is a 130% gem. Since damage is normalized around the dmg efficiency I will just use those for the comparison. Coc setup you presumably run frostbolt in your cospri and the other skill in your mainlink. At the 10 aps breakpoint you are either at the 233 or 200 ms breakpoints for the cospri, either generating 4 or 5 volleys of frostbolts per full second assuming your aps is synched for it. I'm going to assume you are at 25 cdr for the 200 ms breakpoint. Ice nova of frostbolts can do 130x4x1.5 per cycle, so 780% average assuming it all hits. Vortex of projection can do 270x5x1.5 every second cycle, plus 270 for for the cycle you dont have any frostbolts leading to an average of 1147% per cycle. Edit: vortex of projection actually doesnt finish blowing up all the frostbolts before the next proc, so that number should be 1012% dmg effectiveness per cycle. Vortex of projection also has a larger aoe when cast on frostbolts, 3.3 compared to ice nova which has 3.3x0.75 leading to having an higher number of average expected overlaps. In a selfcast setup though you can both cast faster than once per two frostbolt cycles, and you have access to the spell echo support which is an absurd damage multiplier for ice nova of frostbolts due to how it works mechanically.
@@GrunthorYeah again I get the math of how it should work on paper for vortex, it just didn't work out that way in practice. Spent time trying to figure it out, made posts on the build reddit to see if other people could figure it out. Makes 0 sense, vortex should be getting blocked by the number of frostbolts you're producing HARD but it again clearly does more damage almost as if you're somehow getting the extra projection damage invisibly even though you shouldn't be getting it. Subtractem did a multi mirror build for it and noticed the same thing. There was just a lot of fuckiness happening, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was happening with ice nova.
The frostbolt in the Arcanist Brand doesn't use Archmage. It actually doesn't do barely any damage. Frostbolts are there only so the Ice novas are casted from their position. Icenova is the 6-link spell with Archmage and self-cast.

Problem with this build i have is you see pretty bad boss moves, because everything is hidden under frostbolts.

This video (and the PoB i guess) may want a small disclaimer update, only because the price of Ice Nova of Frost Bolts has gotten quite high, so it's unlikely that anyone starting late and not going super hard will be able to afford / easily access the core ability by act 10 as is suggested

@@rafaelmiguel4173 I'm sure Zizaran mentioned in the video that you can attempt to get the Transfigured gem in Normal Lab, but preferably, you should farm Merciless for it since you do have the option to get the Transfigured version of whichever gem you placed in the Divine Font.

I like the chill and freeze potential but it might take a lot of time to get the Ice Niva of Frostbokts from lab.
Pastreons Ball lightning scales higher in dmg, this Frost nova has lower dmg cap in late, but is more tanky (source:bigducks video, he compared them)

Archmage without full mana stacking tech is trash imo. If you wanna play Ice Nova just grab Jungroan's Gauntlet character and swap some defense for dmg if you want.

This build would not have worked with archmage until this league since you would OOM immediately and return proj wasn't a thing until recently. What part of this build did you theorycraft a few years ago?
@@pythagorasabc At the time (might still be the case) the frostbolt interaction bypassed the normal casting restrictions of spell echo on ice nova, which made me think it had promise, but after some testing with pledge of hands it was indeed letting me do only one casting animation and get four ice novas, but there was a fixed time delay between the repeated novas and it didn't seem that casting repeatedly applied all of the ice novas that it should have casted.
And like the others have mentioned, returning proj wasn't really accessible to apply to frostbolt, and they sped up their proj speed as they flew. Plus arcanist brand wasn't a thing at the time so it ended up being way too clunky to keep frostbolts near the target.
I don't remember exactly when it was that I put time into testing and theorizing about this but it was definitely before the change to triggered spells that made them cost mana. It was probably the first league that Big Ducks had his pledge of hands ball lightning archmage build because I remember that was the reason I had a pledge of hands to do the testing, but I'm not 100% on exactly when it was.
@@supersonicgamerguru I played a version of this build a good 2/3 years ago using pledge of hands. It used the old explode chest which fixed the semi-clunky feel to the clear as you could now blow up screens with that 1 mod. I revisited it in 3.22 (in a small priv league) and it didn't feel anywhere near as good as it used to. The clear felt very clunky without the explode and damage uptime was hit and miss. I do think the brand tech for frostbolt should solve the clunkiness but it'll probably never feel as smooth as a single cast skill. I hear a few mentioning kitava's thirst to automate frostbolt and potentially make it a 1 button build, but we'll see how that plays out.

It's to cap res without needing to put it on every suffix of gear. It also helps some people follow the guide better

people who make builds just throw that in so resistances are capped. it's up to YOU to cap your resists

The only thing i dont like and dont really get is why everyone suggests Rolling Magma as a starter skill... Honestly i think this is one of the most awkward skills
It's because Rolling Magma isn't bad numbers wise and you can shotgun with the second bounce if you aim correctly. Once you got that down it feels a lot better and not as clunky as it may seem initially.
It's because Rolling Magma / HFT + Flame Wall all have great synergy; Casting Magma through FW = extra damage, HFT through FW = extra damage. You can minimize socket pressure this way and progress the campaign more quickly.

Just play with anything. It doesnt matter. You will only use it for like 1 hour or 2.

this is a stupid question but why are league starters with a gem that you cannot guarantee to get unless you farm labs and pray that you get lucky?
Because farming lab isn't hard
You can easily pick the transfigured gems up. Usually you play the campaign anyway rarely on your main gem. 10-15 merc labs and you get your gem before you even reach maps
Unless you get crazy unlucky lab farming shouldn’t take more than a couple hours at most

Started out playing coc ice nova of frostbolts last league and over the course of the league realized vortex of projection is just better in every way on the same build with just swapping the 1 gem. It very clearly wasn't working the way you'd think it should wih the destroying the frostbolts. You'd still do substantially more damage.
Curious if this builds gonna be the same case where you're better off dropping ice nova for vortex.
ice nova of frostbolts is way better in a selfcast setup than in a trigger setup, because of how spell echo interacts with it.
@@GrunthorI wonder if that's the case cause like I mentioned vortex of projection is doing something weird that no one has seemed to be able to figure out but it "feels" like you're getting all the projections damage even though you're not supposed to.
For example playing coc and hitting 10.1aps you have nowhere near the frostbolts to sustain the number of projections you'd create but it very clearly does more damage than ice nova even though it shouldn't on paper.
@@Bacon-egg-cheese vortex of projection is a 270% gem, ice nova of frostbolts is a 130% gem. Since damage is normalized around the dmg efficiency I will just use those for the comparison. Coc setup you presumably run frostbolt in your cospri and the other skill in your mainlink.
At the 10 aps breakpoint you are either at the 233 or 200 ms breakpoints for the cospri, either generating 4 or 5 volleys of frostbolts per full second assuming your aps is synched for it. I'm going to assume you are at 25 cdr for the 200 ms breakpoint.
Ice nova of frostbolts can do 130x4x1.5 per cycle, so 780% average assuming it all hits.
Vortex of projection can do 270x5x1.5 every second cycle, plus 270 for for the cycle you dont have any frostbolts leading to an average of 1147% per cycle.
Edit: vortex of projection actually doesnt finish blowing up all the frostbolts before the next proc, so that number should be 1012% dmg effectiveness per cycle.
Vortex of projection also has a larger aoe when cast on frostbolts, 3.3 compared to ice nova which has 3.3x0.75 leading to having an higher number of average expected overlaps.
In a selfcast setup though you can both cast faster than once per two frostbolt cycles, and you have access to the spell echo support which is an absurd damage multiplier for ice nova of frostbolts due to how it works mechanically.
@@GrunthorYeah again I get the math of how it should work on paper for vortex, it just didn't work out that way in practice.
Spent time trying to figure it out, made posts on the build reddit to see if other people could figure it out.
Makes 0 sense, vortex should be getting blocked by the number of frostbolts you're producing HARD but it again clearly does more damage almost as if you're somehow getting the extra projection damage invisibly even though you shouldn't be getting it.
Subtractem did a multi mirror build for it and noticed the same thing. There was just a lot of fuckiness happening, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was happening with ice nova.
Is there a line to keeping the ice nova mana cost at 100 per cast and using Kitava's Thirst to automate the frostbolt?

New archmage no longer supports brand skills, does that mean it wont affect skills cast by arcanist brand or will it still work?
The frostbolt in the Arcanist Brand doesn't use Archmage. It actually doesn't do barely any damage.
Frostbolts are there only so the Ice novas are casted from their position.
Icenova is the 6-link spell with Archmage and self-cast.

not really as you have to stand still to cast and while you are tanky to do that on normal bosses in sanctum you dont want to take hits.
