  • In this video, we identify the root cause of a headlamp issue in a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Xenon HID bulbs. Is the problem a bad ballast or a bad headlamp? There's a relatively easy way to find out...

I referred to your video 2 times during my surgery. Mine was successful because of your sharing, thank you. I will add that it appears that the "tabs" on either side may be a locking ring, the tabs are spaced 180 degrees apart. It also appeared that the whole bulb is keyed, so straight in straight out. Very thankful for your video !

This method was so much better than all others I have seen so thank you for the great explanation. Jeep quoted $600+ to replace 1 side… Amazon has a 2 pack OEM bulbs for $120 at the time of writing this so this likely saved me $1000+. One thing I noticed, my model has the 66340HBI bulbs (high beams?). The link in the description is for 66340 bulbs, so just make sure you replace like for like (whoever might be reading this).

THANK YOU!!! I've probably watched 25 videos and you were the 1st to articulate the ring that holds the bulb in. I was about to throw in the towel before watching your video. I appreciate the fact that you showed the actual difficulty in changing the bulbs, rather that the slick single cut videos

This was helpful, thank you. I strongly suggest that the VERY FIRST thing that you do is go to UConnect->Settings->Lights and turn EVERYTHING off or set to zero. And turn the headlight switch to OFF. (Unless you plan to disconnect the battery.) If the new bulbs activate while you are attempting to insert them, you are either going to A) Burn your fingers or B) the bulb will melt any plastic that it touches. So you will end up scraping a few bits of plastic off of the bulb with a fingernail and praying that you didn't just ruin it. (I gently cleaned the bulb just in case.) You can test the lights as you go. The next suggestion is when replacing the lower air box, the upper air intake is actually a separate piece. Remove it and it is easier to get the lower box into position and reconnect the intake just before you push the lower box back onto the pegs. This was much faster. I was able to purchase the correct Osram 66340HBI bulbs from Amazon for a decent price. The seller appeared to be registered as an importer from Europe, so in the least I am a little more confident that I didn't get Chinese knockoffs. Lastly, I like the Grand Cherokee, but this is the most poorly engineered headlight arrangement that I have ever seen.

I am currently experiencing issues with my headlight swap. The bulb burns out or cuts out every 3-4 months, which has cost me a fortune.

@@heytim4142 Avoid touching the bulb glass with your fingers and getting fingerprints on them. Also check your headlight units for water leaks or moisture. Check connections for corrosion and make sure you secure them tightly. Otherwise, you may have an electrical/voltage issue to investigate.

Thanks a lot. In My first attempt I gave up. I didn’t know whether to turn the bulb unit or not. I tried many times I couldn’t . In many other videos, they said you should turn it counterclockwise but it didn’t work for me. In this 2015 model, it appears it has a clip or lever that I didn’t know but watching this video and listening to the detailed explanation I found the way around it and finally replace it.

I remember how easy it was to change the bulb on my '85 Nissan. These days manufacturers make it next to impossible just to get you in their Service Department. Thanks for the video, my 2014 bulb just went out. A little bit of a headache and a few scratchesn but it will save me a couple hundreds bucks. Very helpful good sir! 💰👍🏾

Great video, very thorough and helpful. I still had some trouble with the "clips" but found another video that described it better as a "locking ring" that needs to be twisted counterclockwise before you can remove the bulb assembly. To see what the ring looks like check out "Jeep Grand Cherokee HID how to replace headlight bulb. 4th gen 2011 -2021" by Friendly Mechanic

I just attempted this today. My driver side bulb is out. I though it would be easy as I watched a few other vids before this one. Time was running short as it's the last work day before the holiday weekend. I could not get the driver side bulb out. Other vids did NOT mention the possibility of clips. I had to throw in the towel so I could get ready for work. Will try again on Saturday morning. Glad I found your video.🙂 That wheel access is a frigging joke!!😆

There are plenty of videos explaining how to remove the grill, it is a bit methodical (time consuming) but is really easy. Once you have completed that, the headlight assembly is loose, and therefore access to the globe is straight forward, rotate the black clips and the globe will pop out. The whole process will take about 2 hours the first time you do it, but once you know the process, you should only take an hour. Much easier than scratching hands, and running the risk of not seating the globe correctly.

The easiest way to replace the headlights is to remove the front grill. It is a very straight forward process, albeit time consuming. Prior to doing it you need to have a pry tool to lever off the trims on the wheel arches, but only do the first two clips and undo the 10mm bolt holding the 'roof' of the wheel arch in place, then pull back that roof and disconnect the fog lamps, don't worry about the bumper sensors as they are connected by a large cable so don't have to be removed. There are 5 or 6 large clips under the bottom of the grill, you need to get under the front of the car to get to them, remove them. There are two clips on the top of the dash that need to be pried off.
Once that is done start prying off the grill at the point where it meets the wheel arch, be relatively forceful as the grill at this place is only held to the rest of the body by push in clips. Do this on both sides so that the edges of the grill are clear of the body. Then prise the top of the grill upwards and it should fall off in your hands.
Once this is done you need to remove the honeycomb looking black plastic from below the headlight, there are 4 bolts, plus remove the plastic cover on the top which covers the light and remove the bolt holding the light assembly, the light assembly will then be free.
Open the cap to the light and you will see the two black clips on either side of the globe assembly, twist them (i needed a pair of plyers) and the globe will come out, then replace the globes in reverse of above
When replacing the grill do everything in reverse to the taking off process, however it is easiest if you make sure the grill fits in under the light assembly first, this centres the grill correctly, then push down on the plastic on the top of the grill and the grill will stay in place. You do need to push the corners of the grill in with force, however because it is plastic it should fit back snuggly

One of my bulbs went out. I read recommendations that you should change both so I did. Now, both bulbs are on, but my headlights are really dim and "dispersed" is the best word I can use to describe. And they're not any better when I turn on my brights, maybe even worse. It appears that the deflector that focuses the light and switches from dims to brights isn't work. My headlights don't do the autoleveling when you first start up the jeep. HELP!! Does anyone know if/how to reset the deflector? I have AlfaOBD if there is a way to troubleshoot and/or reset. Thanks, Craig

Good day to you sir, to start I love your presentations. If you have a moment I'd like to ask a question for what I'm going through. I just want different opinions to my subject matter. I have GC Overkand 2018.. my problem recently is that my passenger side headlamps got some water inside ( weird because I only expect the driver side to go bad since the LeD rim the DDL (DAYTIME DRIVING LIGHT) is showing yellow color but slightly. Anyway my question is how do you think I should deal with the LED DDĹ is flickering. It stated first that my front right side signal not working. That was annoying but after several hundred miles of driving it started to work and the message disappeared. Yet when I have the vehicle light switch to Auto for the daytime driving light to be on it flickers that portion if the headlamp led. Here's the kicker.. if I have it on full auto or fully active both driving lights and ddl on for night driving no flicker! Yet if I switch to just ddl function if flickers! How should I troubleshoot? Does buying a new assembly will include the led portion of the ddl?- I noticed in your video that when your bad bulb was inserted your DDL lens flickerd too! My bulb is fine no distortion.. just confused.. and like you said.. I don't want to start throwing money at this problem just as yet.. Thank you in advanced for any input from you ! 😮

The access from the inner wheel well is for people with tiny hands. On my diesel Wk2 I also had to remove the air box on driver side and ecu on passenger side to access the headlights. The retention rings on bulbs themselves are a bit tight because there isn't enough leverage but its good that they are fixed in the housing. I found it was unable to attach the plug when the light was installed because there wasn't enough room. When you attach the plug first you have to summon a bit of your Operation! skillset not to bang the bulb about too much since there is a lot less range of motion. In my case one of the airbox clips vanished when removing the box so be careful as they are about $5 shipped each.

    • @conradeddie3776

Martin Bjel ... The next time I have to change one of those headlight bulbs, I think I am going to cut out a nice 5"x5" square panel
of the inner wheel well material which should make it a snap to easily stick even a heavily gloved hand in there to change the bulb.
The wheel well material is made of a somewhat soft flexible material ... that 5x5" cut "access panel" should then be able to be easily
covered afterward by riviting a 6x6" square of similar material over the opening ... which can then become a permanant removable
      access panal for future use.
I would think this "fix" would turn a laborious two hour job (both headlights) down to a less than 30 Min. (piece of cake job)!
What are your thoughts on this idea??

I'm trying to get it back in, but I'm having a hard time doing it. How did you get yours back in? There are like metal prongs sticking out from inside the headlight housing. Its weird.
