OK FIRSTLY - are you starting to see the vision coming together?! How about those living room ceilings??? 😍. We've been going full speed ahead with the build to try and get as much of the exterior work done before the Spring rain comes but holy smokes, we're really starting to feel it! Excited to hear what you all think about the progress...also, don't forget that we're back on Sunday, April 16th for the WINDOWS and trust me...you are not ready 😍 EDIT: Noticing quite a few comments about the chicken soup...if you pause the video you'll notice that the base is "chickenless stock" and the chicken I used are plant-based from TMRW Foods called SHREDS. It's becoming a new game for me to make the best meat tasting meals for the guys and see if they notice. They were literally MIND BLOWN that it wasn't real chicken!
The crew who eats well at a job because the clients made the effort will always be glad to come back when needed. They also tell the other trades how great you are.
I think your first stairway design being disapproved was a blessing in disguise. This new plan gives your home a very pleasing, unique, symmetrical look. Plus you get a bonus room. Nice job you all!
@@tylerandtodd I worried about those original stairs - - worried because it would be very difficult for your animal family going up and down - most likely they wouldn't be able to manage given their size and open circular type stairway without a backing. As careful as you are with each other and your family members, the stairs, while they might have had a nice appeal would be a nightmare (I believe moving furnishings and your family members to upper areas of your very modern, and I feel certain, what is going to be a beautiful living home to match with your outside domain - can't wait until the entire complex is complete - your dream come true. I thought you had solved the onion problem by refrigerating the onions before cutting - does that process no longer work?
Your mindfulness of the amazing people you work for should be the standard. Housekeeping, breaks safety, and meals should be a no-brainer. I love that you s guys honor that.
As someone with family in construction, you have no idea just how much what you've done is appreciated by your crew. Not just in the physical labor, but taking care of them. My uncle was still out in the field in his 90s and climbing ladders. Seeing your care for your crew brings tears to my eyes. You guys are just incredible human beings and the world is blessed having both of you in it.
When we enlarged our upstairs on our house years back, I decided to make big lunches every day for the crew. Big potroast, hot chicken dinners for lunch, etc. It was in January but it rained one day before the roof was done, one of the carpenters admitted to me he almost didn't come in to work, but then he started wondering what I was making for lunch and he came. We lived in an area with fast food places everywhere, but the guys didn't seem to mind staying in and eating a big dinner at lunch. All the carpenters were single so I don't think they cooked big meals very often. I suggest cooking for the crew wherever you are. The house looks fabulous!
I did the same, the community that was created around eating a meal together lasts forever. Running into crew members, even many years later, they still tell stories…it’s heart lifting.
Feeding the workers helps in so many ways. It let's them know you know they are people, not just employees. And it makes them want to do a great job for you.
You should totally create a book reading nook in that new "attic" space from the additional roof you had to add on for symmetry 📚🤓 It could even be a secret room that has a fun hidden way of getting in!
Hey! Head chef here and this is the best thing I found to cutting onions. Take a paper towel and soak it with water and place it next to your cutting board. Whatever it is in onions that makes us cry do it because they are attracted to moisture and our eyes tend to be the best target. It definitely works for me when I cut pounds of onions at a time 😅
I know you were devastated when the original plans with the spiral staircase didn’t work out but oh my gosh, how much better is this revised design, it’s going to be STUNNING, congratulations!
It's nice that you feed those guys. When we've had the Amish do work for us, we feed them lunch. I agree, it just makes it easier for them and you can sit with them and get to know them too. You are fortunate to have such a good working crew to help build your home. I have respect for people who work in those type of conditions. I work in a Hosp, and we sometimes complain about it being too hot or too cold. (Shakes Head) Haha.
For not crying when cutting onions I would suggest running the onion halves under cold water for a bit! I forgot who told me that but it always helps ☺️

The joy on Todd's face at 17:08 after measuring the ceiling height made me tear up!! He is so happy he will get a huge Christmas tree!!! I am so excited for you guys, watching the progress and how far you have come is so inspiring!! Can't wait to see the house completed❤🏳🌈
You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT about a clean job site! My dad was a contractor and that was the first rule! Your family is delightful, by the way! Loving your journey!
I put onions in the freezer for 20=30mins before I cut/chop them and that usually helps stop the watery/crying eyes! I am glad the build is going well & that Todd's foot is healing well too! xoxo
Also: sharp knife and doing a slow „sawing“ motion instead of pressing just downward on the onion. Pressing downward causes a lot of jets of unpleasant micro onion juices to launch into your face 😉
And if that doesn't work or you forget to freeze them, swimming goggles! Some say wearing safety goggles but the tighter the fit around your face, the better. Especially if you have a lot of dicing. You could also use a small food processor, but that will use power you might not want to use. Happy cooking!
you cut them in half not the ends first, alot of people cut off the ends then the rest, you don't want to do that it releases all that nasty crying business
You guys are just wonderful and how you treat the workers is heart warming. I’m sure they appreciate you whole heartedly. Tyler could easily have a cooking channel. 👍🏼👏🏼
It's normal for my family if you have someone doing housework for you that you feed them. Base on how long they work for you that day you either give them dinner, snacks or both. They could be a contractor, plumber or mover it being a good host & showing gratitude for their labor and a job well done. It reflects on you how well you treat them.
Though you’re paying for the craftsman you’re using … helping them & making them their meals says so much. I practice my Life in the same way. We all need a Village. ❤️
I can't believe the superhuman amount of work you both pack into each day. Just the truckload of kindling cut up and stacked by Todd would have taken me an entire day. You crammed two episodes worth of project progress into this one episode. You do everything right, with style, and at remarkably fast speed. The modest container home is starting to look like a palace. 👏👏👏
Make sure your knife is as sharp as possible when cutting onions. You will cry more when your knife 'tears' the onion rather than truly slicing through the plant cells.
After chopping both ends, you just soak them in a bowl of water for 30-60 sec so they can release those chemicals or just keep them in the refrigerator🤷♂️💟
This is just an example of how when life gives you lemons, you guys turn it into some fabulous lemonade! The place looks great!! As for onions, I actually make an ice bath and throw them in there and do all other prep. Once you get to the onions, the freezing water seems to lessen the fumes and having a wet towel also apparently attracts the fumes which again lessens the fumes. Doesn’t hurt to try. 😜. Thanks for sharing like always. Love you guys!
For onion cutting: wear swim googles or a mask, or safety glasses with side protection. LOL. Yes, I have used them! Also, there are onion slicers/dicers that keep the onion covered while you cut.

Yes, this totally works with the onions! I just started cutting them this way recently (my gf told me about this trick), and I haven't cried while cutting them ever since - so great! 😂😊

Thanks for this Sunday episode. I just love watching you build your dream home. What has been built so far most definitely will be a gorgeous home. I can't help but smile for both of you!!
I watch a cooking show the other day and she used swimming goggles when she cuts onions. She said it looked funny but it worked great. No more tears ❤❤❤
I can only imagine that you guys are even "more" excited than I am waiting & watching this room come to life 🤣😆😆 But, seriously, it's gonna be amazing.
Hey guys, great job continues! First, the onion. Place it in the fridge so it is well cooled. This inhibits the evaporation of the onion fumes some (not 100%, but more than enough for keeping you tear-free during slicing/chopping. 🙂 On being "Helpers", yes, there are times when you have to "leave it to the Pros", (been there, done that). Despite my Architectural background, you do what you can while the work is going on. Do not feel useless or relegated to be just Helpers. You are "resident Owners", which gives you a lot of leeway.(but do remember liability issues.) One thing is certain, you are being great Hosts. I love 'getting my hands dirty', knowing what exists behind the walls, and having had a hand in the building of it. It is also fantastic that you can capture what would have gone in a landfill, and repurpose it. Just make sure that the kindling is not treated [pressure treated]... you don't want to burn that because of the toxic elements in it. Fear not though, I have done 'dumpster diving' for otherwise usable lumber, many times more than once, and have retrieved oak, walnut, and even some maple and cherry that would have cost a small mint. so right on guys... way to go! 😎 Happy Easter, and enjoy the time with the family!! Cheers!
Tip for onion! Wet a piece of paper towel or small cloth. Ring out some of the water, but make sure it is still good and wet. Place it on the cutting board next to where you are cutting the onion. This works for me, no more tears. Hope it works for you too!

Tips for not crying while cutting
Onion:
1) put some white vinegar on the cutting board, before chopping onions on it.
2) while cutting , blow air on the onions , so the essential fractions will move away from you and not get into your eyes.
3) cut onions inside a container filled with water

That's really cool to feed and clean because you know they feel like family unit. They probably can't wait to see the finished product!
If you want to stop crying while cutting onions , have Todd do it…hahahhaha😂
😂😂😂😂
I'm grateful for what you guys are doing for the contractors. They aren't really appreciated unless you show them. You guys keep doing you.... Love it!!! Glad you are back on two feet Todd❣️❣️💗
Cut onions with a Very sharp knife. And you can stick the onion in the microwave for 10 seconds before you cut it and it actually helps !
If you don’t want to cry during the time to cut the onion , light the candle right next to it , second you turn the stove next to the cutting board , the fame will help you , 100% the house looks awesome, I can’t wait to see how you furnished it ❤
I do this too. I call it my cooking candle ( we get through a lot of onions in my family 😅)
The homestead is looking amazing! I can’t wait to see how the new home turns out! 💗💗💗
That staircase is going to be EPIC. You may need an elevator for older visitors... lol
Hahaha we really might, can't get over how cool it is!!!
@@tylerandtodd actually smaller scale home elevators are available. Not sure of the cost or more importantly, the power demand
@@tylerandtodd Have you seen the new residential elevator tubes for disability access to upper floors? 🤯I'm going that direction for my house... "come over and play with my elevator" lol
@@farmerthatflies I think some use pressurised air.
cheers! /CS
Those builders are machines. Awesome team. 😁 I think it’s great that you both look after them with those lovely lunches. 🥰
The progress is so exciting 😊
When cutting onions I rinse them right before they are ready to be chopped, it does work for me 😁

SIMPLE....WEAR SWIM GOGGLES !!! I got some strange looks when someone entered the kitchen but my eyes never suffered !!! Secret hint from Ala-damn-bama!!!
Run onion under cold water. Your so kind to feed all the guys
You guys are such a beautiful team.
Thanks for this Sunday episode. I just love watching you build your dream home. What has been built so far most definitely will be a gorgeous home. I can't help but smile for both of you!!
You guys such good humans. I look forward to watching your videos. Your disposition and your happiness comes across and brightens me up!
I rinse my hands in cold water when the onion tears get me. Works every time.
I love that you cook nice meals for your crew.
I watch a cooking show the other day and she used swimming goggles when she cuts onions. She said it looked funny but it worked great. No more tears ❤❤❤
I love that you live in the real woods. I’m lovin’ watching the changing weather & seasons. Your homestead is awesome.
Happy you are up and around! Very happy to see you two boys achieving your dream! Cheers from Ontario!
On being "Helpers", yes, there are times when you have to "leave it to the Pros", (been there, done that).
Fear not though, I have done 'dumpster diving' for otherwise usable lumber, many times more than once, and have retrieved oak, walnut, and even some maple and cherry that would have cost a small mint. so right on guys... way to go! 😎
Happy Easter, and enjoy the time with the family!! Cheers!
Tip for onion! Wet a piece of paper towel or small cloth. Ring out some of the water, but make sure it is still good and wet. Place it on the cutting board next to where you are cutting the onion. This works for me, no more tears. Hope it works for you too!
I am so glad you have great contractors. Things are moving right along. Great job guys!
Love seeing how well the house is coming along. Tyler the stuff you make looks so delicious :)
Wow, what a beautiful home you’re building, 💕
Onion tip - put in the freezer for 10 minutes to chill it. A chilled strong onion rarely causes tears.
It’s really fascinating to watch your home come together! Freeze your onions before you cut them, your eyes will burn less.
I think your new home is going to be even better than the original plan. It looks amazing already. Happy Easter to you and your loved ones.
