    If you grease the bowl with ordinary kitchen oil (applied thin with a brush) the concrete doesn't stick to the bowl and you can reuse the bowl for another lamp.

    Very nice process and project! In architecture school I made a large plaster model of the Pantheon using a similar technique with two bowls. I remember even making the cassettes of the ceiling with styrofoam squares glued to the mold. Might try the same on a concrete lamp project. Thanks for the inspiration :)

    One thing that you could try for a lot of these concrete projects, is using a reciprocating saw without a blade for the vibrations. It works surprisingly well, although you do have to be careful not to break more delicate molds with them. They are commonly used when pouring concrete sidewalks and such, and they leave a nice finish on the edges.

    Ben, for off-the-shelf, Quikrete Q-max mix would work way better than Quikrete 5000...I sent you a message a while back about the virtues of Q-max (sent via your website - not sure if you check this). It is like an inexpensive semi-GFRC mix. In fact, it might be better than the countertop mix since it has AR glass fibers in the mix. You'll get way less bugholes because it has a plasticizer, higher strength, and super quick demolding (a few hours for a project like this)....it really is an amazing product you should definitely check out. At $10/bag it is a great alternative to the countertop mix. I've used it for small countertop projects with success.

    a tip to the molds come out more easily is to apply vaseline on them before placing the concrete.

  • @garethphillips7429

    Hi Ben, Please could you advise on the countertop mix? We don't seem to have an equivalent in the UK and I'm finding a lot of your tutorials pretty hard to replicate perfectly without a flowable concrete mix that's still high in strength. I'd be grateful for any pointers on mixing this stuff from scratch.

    Nice job!
    Try spreading a thin layer of vaseline on your molds or if you don't have it you can use some vegetable oil too.Makes the demolding a lot easier... If this method leaves any marks you can always sand it.

    it will also be a lot stronger if you add fibres to the concrete; one way i can think of is perhaps lots of 2cm lengths of monofilament fishing line? or polyurethane thread if you want some colour.

    Any recommendations on the concrete to water ratio when mixing? I tried to make some of these with Quickcrete 5,000 (with stones filtered out) a couple weeks ago and it didn't go well. My concrete was mixed thin enough to pour and I worked to get as much air out as possible. After curing for 24 + hours though the concrete crumbled as I was half finished removing the mold. Tips or advice?

  • @qrubmeeaz

  • @bezweifeln3959

    that section of pipe in the bowl could be mounted to a longer rod and positioned upside down (from the way you have it) as a lampshade, right? Is the cement surrounding the pipe strong enough for that? I don't want to hang it.

    gosh my lamps keep breaking

    • @83hjf
      @83hjf 6 років тому

      add reinforcement? Concrete has fantastic compression strength but very little tensile strength. that's why you can squeeze it and it won't break, but bend it and it cracks really easy. so, you add metal. even wire (a little thick) can help. make a little mesh inside your mold. hell, make a loose coil that will fit the mold. it will give the concrete a LOT of strength and your stuff won't break. Also keep in mind if you make runny mix, the dried concrete will have even poorer strength. If you want you can add additives to concrete to improve its properties. There is an additive i remember using, it smells very strong of glue, and it makes the concrete a lot more resistant.

  • @Ifixitagain
    @Ifixitagain 6 років тому

    that method of vibrating is too violent and the wrong shape; it will add bubbles. you need to use a tube shaped object with a rounded end. It should also only be vibrating slightly i.e. not a lot of movement like the multi tool. I am thinking a phillips vibrating toothbrush would work using an old brush with the end cut off and silicone rubber surgical tubing over the shaft and sealed at the end with a round knob of gorilla glue or something similar.
