Damn good lines. I was 13 years old in 1979. Although this song was written in the 90's, it captures the vibe I felt in '79. The Smashing Pumpkins are about my age. And this is what a Great Song does.
@San Diego I was 12 in 79' too...I feel like the only ones who are capable of really getting this song are the ones who were exactly the same age as Billy and I were in 1979.
This song just overcomes my whole spirit with nostalgia. It just feels something so mystical, it is like this song is detached from all science and matter and is just an entity from another dimension.
It's crazy cause the moment I heard this April 30 2024 it gave me the weirdest feeling of everything being at ease when my world was falling apart 🫶🏻🧘🏻♂️🛫🪐
This is one of those songs that sends a chill down my spine, but in a good way, like, "damn, look how far I've come, and I've only got so long" Especially with that chorus just... damn. Nostalgia but also sends a chill down my spine personally and makes me ponder my own mortality.
this song makes me think of summer sometimes. not sure why, but i kinda like the feeling. the song itself, i'm sure, is probably very nastolgic for some of the old timers who listened to it back in the day...
Same that echoed voice in the background reminds me of summer at a young age when i first heard it i got flashbacks of good ol memories with me and my cousins playing in summer god i miss those days
Me too! When I just listened it reminded me of the summer days and nights playing with the neighborhood kids. Like we had all the time in the world. No worries. No problems.
This might be my first time hearing this song but the feeling of nostalgia it gives me just makes me feel like I’ve heard this long ago on replay for every memory I have of pure joy

So a lot of people here grew up with this song, were alive at the time and I just like this song, I mean my dad does and I inherited it from him but like it is just a genuinely great song and it still makes me feel nostalgic for a time I never lived in

He is singing about how we are in a constant rat wheel in society. How it all just keeps turning without a regard for our happiness. With spiritual undertones
Man, I'm almost 30 and there's still great new music out there, you just have to search for it. Music is so easy to access nowadays and everyone just has their own niche rather than a few songs getting super famous that everyone knows so it may feel like less classics are being created, but the good stuff is out there. Musicians didn't just stop being less talented. Lots of active groups like Fleet Foxes, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala, Khruangbin, Dr. Dog, and Alt-J are a few I like. I used to think "wow modern music sucks, I hate the stuff on the radio.", but I wasn't putting in enough effort to find it.
they have NOTHING like we had it. I honestly tell myself and other that I truly believe I came to earth in this specific incarnation to experience my coming of age during the early 90's and have what I call "The Glden Era of all genres" as the soundtrack of my life during the time. its impossible to hear music ike this, an not be in love with being alive.
There’s plenty of good music, you’re just refusing to look past nostalgia and it’s quite annoying. Also not too sure why you’d feel sorry for them when this music is still avaible and EXTREMELY popular.
I play it strumming on acoustic it's a up down up down strum pattern 4/4 around 127 BPM and tuned to E flat . Abit tricky as fast key changes so strum pattern is half measure for the chorus 1 and 2 etc
This song makes me cry, I was born 1971... so I was 8 and all he says about in this song was our life ! I was born in a very small town at the time we had 900. No technology then as anyone who born that time knew. Doing all the things in his original video was what we did... I miss it every day :(

Whenever I hear this song, I imagine being on a road with fields on both sides on a sunny day and you're just infinitely driving that road, just watching other cars pass by and the flowers in the fields.
I learned both guitar and bass and I can tell you, sometimes the bass is what carries certain songs. metallicas original bassist was straight up a lead bassist. Shits super rare
I lost my mom summer 2014 this was one of her favorite songs so this year 2023 I will smash some pumpkins while listening to this song at the end of October
Idk why, but in an alternate reality I could picture myself growing up in Oregon or Washington during the fall of 1984 just having a good time while this song plays in the background.
I've heard this song a million times and never bothered to learn the lyrics while seeing the video at the same time. I love how the video starts with kids in a wheel--the wheel of life. Then it moves on to scenes of kids partying hard, being romantic in a pool like in a womb, and wantonly vandalizing a store. These are juxtaposed with cryptic lyrics about the impermanence of existence and the finality of death. Reminds me of Zen Buddhist poetry, which is also all about the wheel of life, and the need to suck the marrow out of life in the present for death is always waiting at the door. A junebug skipping like a stone--a line straight out of Zen poetry.
For all the people that won't and don't take the time to the people that feel hate and feel unwanted , abandon, ridiculed, lonely and forgotten for all those that don't feel a apart of something I wish you the strength to go forward and carry on may your days get brighter you find what you are looking for in life able to seek the help you need what ever kind of help that is and the will and understanding to go forward and stay away from the people that hurt you and don't care what comes out of there mouths toward others or what kind of action they take on you which can just be as bad as their words. Stay with family if you can and others don't interfere and try to discourge you and make you out to be something you are not how crappy that think they have the power to do this for what ever is in their heart, make friends. friends that won't call you names knock you down but will be there for you when you need them and family too just not when its convenient for them. Once in a while, I go back to this song! It mades me quit my job in Belgium in late 90's to Join a Boston grunge band for several years. Met my future wife. And went back with her to Belgium. Hearing this song make me wonder why, how music could push you to do amazing stuff! When I explain this to my son while listening this, he just shrug! And say!" You're crazy man! " (Tim Boston)
That's what lead me here a GREAT Song by this very talented Artist SMASHING PUMPKINS: what were the specific LYRICS to 1979? But the subtle Question, going BEYOND to Interpretation, becomes ("ASK"ING a Question is just Perfect for Me, as my very Name Initials to'"A.S.K." to "ASK", being Albert S. Kundrat!) Is the MILIEU or Mentality of this Song "1979" actually the Mind-Set of any authentic 1979 TEEN, WHEN He or She was in that very Year 1979 as TEEN, when THINKING, FEELING, and BEHAVING the way KIDS of 1979 were actually like? Or is the Song only a Kaleidoscopic View of the 21st Century TEEN, seeing Himself or Herself, FUNWISE, as a mental Nineteen-Seventy-niner? or, Rather as a post 2000 TEEN, posing as if though a 1979 TEEN in nostalgic artistry, but not necessarily in cultural fact, any 1979er's mindset, culture and mentality wise?
1979 I was 10 riding my bikecdown Silver Creek Rd. We had the Best chilhood ever, YhecSilver Creek Gang!! We were tomboys, horse riding, tree climbing, Barn voyages. Made tunnells in the hay, walkeked the beams in the Barn. What a life!! The Best of times.

He creates a huge amount of words and sensations along the song and the final line "as you see there is no one around" seems like everything created was destroyed... idk
It’s crazy to think this song is called 1979 and it’s from the 90s but majority of the comments I’ve seen say the feel the vibe from 1979 listening to this. Billy is something of a time traveller himself
This song reminds me of high school even though I hardly went cause I skipped school and got High all day. Fast forward 3 decades later, 2 stint’s in the penitentiary totaling 25 years. Oh how I wish I could go back and do a retake, I would have definitely smoked more
I've been trying to decide if I wanted to do The Greatest (and Cheap Thrills) yet, or stick to doing older more obscure Sia stuff for the moment... but sure :D
Just lost an friend since I was 10! I’m now 40! We didn’t talk everyday, but it was always special! He’s my forever friend! He introduced me to this ❤️❤️❤️❤️ age 12 5th grade! I love that dude and his mother omg wow, changed my life; I might have never talked to white people nor given any human an chance and not stereotyping people! Wow just wow changed my whole life journey! I’ll always have y’all because I’m just duplicating the love you gave me 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽 Becky and Chris Mclane 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This song makes me think about the 80s and how my parents lived in those years and probably how much fun they had, but this song makes me think about getting bullied and "why are they bullying me?" or "Are they ok or do they hate me that much?".
This is the kind of song I'd play if a meteor was coming for earth and I only had a day or 2 left to live... I would play music like this, reflecting on my many regrets, thinking about how much time I've squandered and given away, how I might have done things differently, done more with myself, experienced more.... Thinking about how nice it would be to have someone there beside me, to hold, and to cry with....oh well lol earth go boom hehe
I recently moved to California leaving a lot of sad shit in my life behind. I didn't hear this song for at least 10 years. I don't why it suddenly popped up in my head
Man that bass line is so good. It's so simple, yet it adds so much to the song. I get goosebumps everytime it kickes in.
Thats the way of music something so simple can be a masterpiece
Same here
Yes. 0:34 is an amazing moment.
Is that the bass?? Right 👍🤞
Is that the bass? Exactly 🤞👍

lyrics:
shakedown 1979
Cool Kids Never have a Time On a
Live Wire up off the street
You and l should l meet
Junebug
skipping like a Stone
With The Headlights pointed at the Drawn We were Sure we'd never see an end at it all
And i Don't Even care
To Shake theses Zipper Blues
We Don't know Just Where Our bones Will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and Absorb into the Earth Below
Double cross the Vacant and the bored
They're not sure Just what we Have in the store
Morphine city Slipping dues down to See
That Even we Don't Even Care
As restless As we are
We feel the pull in the land of a Thousand guilts
And Poured Cement lamented and assured
To the Lights and Town Below Faster Than the Speed of sound Faster Than we Thought we'd go beneath The sound of hope
justin Never Knew the rules
Hung Down
With the freaks and Ghouls
No Apologies ever need to be made
I know you better than you fake it to see
That we Even Don't care
To shake these zipper blues And
We Don't know just where Our bones Will rest
To dust l guess
Forgotten and Absorb into the Earth Below
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one Around
This is the deepest, most poetic YOLO song I’ve ever heard

Hearing this song make me wonder why, how music could push you to do amazing stuff! When I explain this to my son while listening this, he just shrug! And say!" You're crazy man! " (Tim Boston)
I don't necessarily think my youth was that much better than my life today, but I had one thing then that I don't have now: optimism.
Love this song 💞
This song makes me want to be on a dance floor with it blasting very loud over the speakers!
Playing bass to this song, Im very happy it’s written the way it is.
Thank you for the lyrics 🤟🏽🧸
This song!
Summer of 96, sweet days gone too soon !
Or is the Song only a Kaleidoscopic View of the 21st Century TEEN, seeing Himself or Herself, FUNWISE, as a mental Nineteen-Seventy-niner? or, Rather as a post 2000 TEEN, posing as if though a 1979 TEEN in nostalgic artistry, but not necessarily in cultural fact, any 1979er's mindset, culture and mentality wise?
lol i am new subscriber you kicked it this is my favorite song
1979 I was 10 riding my bikecdown Silver Creek Rd. We had the Best chilhood ever, YhecSilver Creek Gang!! We were tomboys, horse riding, tree climbing, Barn voyages. Made tunnells in the hay, walkeked the beams in the Barn. What a life!! The Best of times.
My Mom was 17 in 1979. She's 59 1/2 now. She'll be 60 this coming February 2022. She always Tells me she still feels that Age as the Years go by. Since we're all in a Brand New Decade I don't Blame her when she always Tells me every now and then that she still feels like she's 17 and now going on 60 this February my Mom still looks exactly the same from her Younger Years when she grew up in the 70's and 80's Especially in 1977-1979.
Thanks for sharing it with lyrics! Cheers!
It's poetry expressed in music. Not like it is today unfortunately :(
if you see a massive uptick in this videos plays its me lol i am trying to figure out a part by ear and its driving me nuts
flashbacks of when I was stationed in cali on the beach
i heard ppl from California dont say cali so you are a filthy liar
@@luciferdiablo2509 he was living in the military so he probably isn’t from Cali
This pulls me in
He creates a huge amount of words and sensations along the song and the final line "as you see there is no one around" seems like everything created was destroyed... idk
GTA IV AND GRAN TURISMO 5!!!!
It’s crazy to think this song is called 1979 and it’s from the 90s but majority of the comments I’ve seen say the feel the vibe from 1979 listening to this. Billy is something of a time traveller himself
Good luck finding a song today with depth like this!
This song reminds me of high school even though I hardly went cause I skipped school and got High all day. Fast forward 3 decades later, 2 stint’s in the penitentiary totaling 25 years. Oh how I wish I could go back and do a retake, I would have definitely smoked more
My favorite! 🌸🌚
sounds good😊
Yea this is one of those songs that I actually don't care what the words are....I just love the way it sounds :P
Damn this song make feel full and empty at the same time
Who’s listening in 2024?

Matt Jones Could you do The Greatest by Sia
I've been trying to decide if I wanted to do The Greatest (and Cheap Thrills) yet, or stick to doing older more obscure Sia stuff for the moment... but sure :D
I like all of her songs honestly. It would make me happy if you did any of her songs.
Why is everyone repeating station in Cali on the beach what's that turn it up!?!?
Perfect song for when the party is over
I recently moved to California leaving a lot of sad shit in my life behind. I didn't hear this song for at least 10 years. I don't why it suddenly popped up in my head
Remember when i'm in highschool...was rebel and rude......
Wish I could go back to 1979.
