- Finally, a remake of my Journey into YOUR Imagination and With Figment video. Begin in 1982 at the pavilions design, and the ride that didn`t open until 1983. Take a look at how the original ride worked, and the problems it had that would play a key part in the rehab decisions 15 years later. Then follow step by step how the pavilion changed in 1998-9, what was removed and what was added. This is followed by full coverage of the 1999 queue, and a new hi quality multi angle, new clean live audio mix full ride on Journey into YOUR Imagination. Next follow the changes made in 2001-2, and then walk the full queue of the current pavilion. Then take a full ride of Journey into Imagination with Figment, with a new high quality multi angle video edit and a new high quality clean live audio mix that features each part of the new One Little Spark in full. Explore the current Imageworks, and then watch split screen compasison videos of both the 1983 and 2002 rides and the 1999 and 2002 rides, showing what replaced what and what used to be where. Finally, see comparisons of the changes made in the foyer, queue and Imageworks areas and what used to be where compared to the pavilion today. 55 minutes long!

I'm so fortunate to have ridden the original. Perhaps with today's technology and improvements, some of the problems of the original ride could be solved.

im glad you got to ride it, i never was able too, for years disney's been droping hints of bringing the original back, so maby someday, i will be able to!
Although I have only experienced the ride as it is now, I've a great love for the original Imagination and I like how this video explains a lot about what went about in making the changes. Still, it would be spectacular if they could try and bring back elements of the original plot and scenes to the ride. Figment and the Dreamfinder are wonderful characters. I also watched this whole video when I should have been sleeping... Oops. Thanks for putting this tribute together!
If you're into the Dreamfinder story arc, Disney did a fantastic collaboration with Marvel to produce two miniseries based on the original attraction. Definitely worth the read.

Would be awesome if they fixed the problems with the original ride and brought it back better than ever! The original ride was probably my favorite Epcot ride on my teen years.
It can still be an omnimover ride, but trackless!
I was thinking the exact same thing. I want to become an imagineer to do this! If I brought back the original, I would add Disney characters to the proper setting. Like the genie from Aladdin could be part of the literature section. Similar to what they did to its a small world
Martin, thank you for this tribute, even though it's bittersweet to see the history of the ride. I hope someday that Disney will bring the ride back to it's former glory. The technology is there for the turntable again. Also, thank you for putting in the original EPCOT Entrance music from 1982. This was Tony Baxter's baby. Tony Baxter was the Imagineer that thought of the original Imagination pavilion.
So, I’m a CP and work at Journey right now. Thank you so much for this video, seriously. I had zero answers for my guests’ questions about the original ride and journey into YOUR, and this just taught me ten times more than my trainers did. It was fascinating. It was really cool to see what the building that I have come to love so much used to be. Bravo!!
I still can't believe the 2002 version has gone on for as long as it has. Not only are the pop culture references, production values and the overall in-joke about Journey Into YOUR Imagination horribly outdated, but the current ride is a hollow and cynical shell of the original. There's no soul to it. It's a remnant of a ride that doesn't even exist in *any* of the Disney theme parks anymore (Honey, I Shrunk The Audience).
It's really sad looking at it nowadays. I really hope Disney decides to update the ride extensively someday.
Thank you so much for this video! I have a webcomic about personified Future World attractions with JII as the main character and I wanted something to play in the background while drawing the JIYI scene, but it ended up helping me realize just how drastic a change was for the pavilion which is very important for the character development, and helped me get into the ride so I could draw it accurately. The scene where my main character sees her loved ride become JIYI is a very important scene and this helped a lot! Thanks~
More reasons why Epcot will never be the same as when I was a kid. No Wonders of Life, no Imagination. Just a dumbed down version of Figment...

I want to know who exactly thought it was a good idea to virtually insult the riders in this version.
Journey into Imagination with Figment is my favorite ride at the entire Walt Disney World resort and I love Dr. Channing.
Considering how many millions they had to pour into rebuilds just to get the current version I wonder if it would have been cheaper to simply keep maintaining the original version in the long run. Considering it was the only ride in Future World with a timeless quality to it I'm pretty sure they could have gotten away with keeping the original. Plus, the current version just looks horribly outdated already.
What Disney did to a once great attraction is purely disgusting.

This was my favorite queue line for Journey Into Imagination. But the ride wasn't that great and I later learned about the glory that is the Dream Boat and Dreamfinder and Figment...
I know how the original should return! Just turn the same turntable scene into a cgi animated preshow, than add the original scenes to the ride. BAM!

The Imagination Institute seems to be filled with a lot of Disney Scientist, like Phillip Brainard (Flubber), Wayne Salinzki (Honey, I Shrunk Trilogy, Honey, I Shrunk the Audience), Dexter Riley (The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him, Now You Don't!, and The Strongest Man in the World), and even Merlin Jones (The Misaventures of Merlin Jones, The Monkey's Uncle).
The only one that hasn't gotten his own movie is the Founder of the Imagination Institute and Figment. Also, if you wait a moment, it mentions Dexter Riley leaving his Tennis Shoes somewhere around there. And in the Computer Lab is the sign that says, "No Tennis Shoes", referencing "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". Classy Disney.

This ride has always been sad. It's so hard to understand how they keep making a bad ride worse, with every "upgrade". I can't even begin to imagine (see what I did there) how pathetic the next version, if they so chose to make one, will be. They do need to bring back the Dreamfinder though!

It wasn't Disney it was Kodak they wanted a remodel every 15 years if it wasn't for the sponsors disney wouldn't have changed most of the rides we know today
No wonder these incarnations are so awful. They don't even have the spirit of the original. They feel half-assed, sad and cynical, especially the second one.

I've ridden both versions of Journey Into Your Imagination. Not only did putting Figment back not make it better,they actually made it worse...as Dreamfinder's protege,he was a childlike sprite. Now he's an annoying pest. And the upside-down rooms were amazing when they resembled a real house. Remaking them in black-lite colors and toon proportions destroyed that.
I was lucky to experience this pavilion in its original form. I know they can't bring back the original ride,but surely the Imagineers can come up with something considerably better than the current version. And the Image Works needs to go back up to the second floor.

y'know, even for a terrible replacement to Journey Into Imagination, this ride by itself still has some great things about it. (Honestly, I prefer the more realistic version of the upside down house to Figment's in the next refurbishment)
If they update it again, and they stick with the institute, they should bring back the dot room but ONLY that. Everything else, do whatever.

I actually like the middle version best....I love the optical illusions and upside down house effects. The new one with Figment is just annoying. The old one was alright, but didn't work for me, even when I was a kid.
To each their own. I'm glad that you have good memories of that version and I hope that no one teases you about liking it.
