And I had a Civics Teacher in 10th grade (1977) who was an unapologetic Conservative - only share his personal beliefs after being challenged by some leftist hippie (student drone) who blathered on about how bad America's military was abroad while touting the virtues of Che' and Pol Pot . The teacher shut him down in about a minute's time producing a tattered draft card and bullet wound to his leg.

Back when I was in High School, I never heard one teacher state his/her political views. That's the way it should be. Teach what you are getting paid to teach and move on.
We went to different schools. Things we're a lot different back in the day. My elementary school principle still had a paddle hanging on his office wall. Not sure if it was ever used but the implication was clear.
Politics should be left out of the pulpit too. Freedom of religion is ok but a preacher or minister or priest should be concerned about saving souls not gaining votes for some government official.

When I was a teenager, I asked my grandfather who he was voting for in an election. He replied, "For the best man." That's all he said. He never talked politics. But he voted and friendly to all people. He is gone now and I'm 51 years old now. I still don't know who he voted for... why do people feel like they have to run their mouths about what they think..be professional
I grew up in the 80's and I remember it being like that back then. It wasn't that people didn't have strong political opinions, but there was always the attitude that political opinions were not only personal, but divisive, and discussion of them only belonged in certain settings.
As teacher… keep your “personal” religious, social and political beliefs out of the classroom. Only teach facts and of course encourage critical thinkers. But my kids shouldn’t know how you feel or voted for. Learn to answer questions appropriately and if a student asked questions that may not have anything to do with the class topic, don’t be afraid to say, “ I appreciate your question, but let’s stay on topic.” Kids will have questions. You as the teacher have control of the conversation.

I am 85 years old and I never knew what my teachers' political views were. In those days they stuck with the subject assigned to them. Things like Math, English etc.
You're right! In the 70's & 80's I heard zero political talk in the classroom. However, in college I had a professor who distributed Noam Chomsky books and said we had to pay $3.00 for them. He was fired immediately and then arrested when he attempted retaliation against students who blew the whistle, claiming "they got me fired".
They need to go back to that model! When students ask my opinion on anything political or religious, I just say it is not content related and move on. A student thanked me last year at one point when I said that, telling me that she wished her other teachers would do the same. I suspect most kids feel this way, but are afraid to say anything.

It is high school, so more open discussion happens but this wasn't a sociology or humanities class. It was chemistry. It probably started with good intentions. Your comment just reminded me of the 2012 election. 😞 I was in middle school at the time and our principal thought it would be lovely to have a mock election. Everyone had a day to vote for either Obama or Romney. One of the girls in my class placed a vote for Obama since he seemed to stand for everything she wanted in a president at the time. Fast forward to the day after Election Day, her father tried to kick her out of the house for voting for Obama. 🙃 We’re talking about a grown man threatening to kick out his (at the time 12-13 year old daughter) for voting a certain way in a mock election every student had to participate in. We weren’t given an option of third party or an option to simply not vote (if you didn’t cooperate you were threatened with detention). The father in general sounded abusive period but that’s the kinda thing that would make me not want to associate with him after moving out in the future.

Not all teachers are like this. In any situation or population or company, there’s always going to be abnormalities. Also schools are not really educational institutions, it’s a child care center, so kids don’t hang out in the communities to cause problems and also parents don’t have to hire babysitters. Schools are never about educating kids.

She didn’t have a mini anything, the students said she did the same thing the year before, and for the whole school year. She just needed to be fired and then for the state to revoke her teaching certificate. 3 years after the fact, I hope she can no longer teach in a classroom.
I've seen it happen with my own niece here in Pennsylvania over 10yrs ago and thinks just like this woman because of her good teacher friend that she's still friends with to this day. So yes people this crap has been going on way too long. Very sad.

I question what kind of parents this teacher had. I've never been a parent, but I know how I felt and what I thought about my own parents. My dad never finished the 8th grade and my mom dropped out of high school a few months into her junior year. My dad worked as a truck driver and laborer and my mom was a housewife. My parents weren't perfect-after all, they were human. But they raised a family on the $28,785.00/year that my dad brought home (from his last tax return in 1978 before he died). We never went hungry; we always had a roof over our heads and clothes to wear. That my parents managed to do that and send me to private school is nothing short of a miracle. My parents may not have been as educated as I am, but I always thought they were brilliant for pulling that off. My parents had problems, as I said they weren't perfect, but I loved them and respected them. I feel genuinely sorry for this teacher's parents. They must be so hurt that they raised a daughter that is so disrespectful and ungrateful. I hope she's never able to get a job teaching anywhere ever again.
I too am a teacher, though only going on 5 years. I have had plenty of students ask who I voted for, what my views are on gun control and other political ideologies. All I said was this is Environmental Science so let's keep our discussions to that. My views and opinions are my own and do not need to be shared with the students. If we are discussing environmental policies of our government then once again I will share facts and figures. The last thing I would want to do is lose the trust of my students by displaying my personal views to my class while I teach.

These teachers, looks like one in the video. There might be some legal challenge if students are videoing teachers without their permission. It was not allowed in our school; teachers have rights, too.
I went to high school in the 70s. I had two teachers who did that: one was a 9th grade history teacher and a very radical liberal; the other was an 11th grade history teacher, who was a hyper-conservative. They were both annoying as hell and I didn't really listen to either of them. But it wouldn't have occurred to any of us at the time to report her to our parents.
I agree with your take on it. I also think she went overboard. No need to cuss, to say "you're the problem with society" or even argue politics with them. I feel like it's natural if a topic is in the material, like current events in history class, kids will start to ask questions. Discussion is good! But she could've picked a better time and place to promote the Gay Straight Alliance club. @@danielled108 actually it wasn’t at all. I went to school in the 70s and 80s. Everyone was chill and hung out together. There were mixed couples dating, gay people too. In fact-I had a gay friend in 7th grade (I actually knew he was gay before he did) at a Christian school-it bothered no one. Because we learned all about Dr. King-Skin color didn’t matter-because we were all taught that it didn’t-unlike now where everyone is indoctrinated to believe that they are some kinda victim. The only social issue that was different from what I can see-young men were way more handsey and the sexual harassment coming from males-all colors-was worse. Aside from that the only other difference-we were taught to be resilient and pragmatic, how to take care of ourselves. We had home economics and knew how to cook, clean, sew, how to balance a checkbook and make things for ourselves. And we actually learned real history -like the root of (jealousy) and dangers of communism, Marxism, and socialism and what they lead to...tyranny.

Teacher's in this day and age, teach outside of the curriculum, EVERY DAY in our public school's. This is not an isolated incident. This particular teacher, was WELL KNOWN by the administration of her tactics in classrooms. She should have been removed long ago. The only reason it happened now,, is she was caught on video. This is happening all day, every day, all over the country. Parent's and students need to step up and remove these people from our School System's immediately. In 1967 I was in High School. This was during the war in Vietnam. The school was close to a park. it was very common to see Anti War demonstrations. I had what would now be considered a progressive. The country was very divided. The first day of school he said he was not there to teach us what to think. He was there to teach us how to think. Great man. I never forget his wise counsel.
That’s was our problem in Afghanistan, we push our beliefs on them and shove it down their throats, and not surprising, it is silently rejected and completely abandoned as soon as we leave. Instead of establishing a sustainable government that they supported, we forced leaders on them that didn’t have real support amongst the average Afghan. damn, this is so tame lol. I had a teacher in high school that would show up drunk every morning for 6 months. He got a little time off, then came back, still coming in drunk. Never got fired. I'm glad though. I learned some very valuable studying lessons from this teacher that helped me all through college and well into my career.
I had a teacher repeatedly disciplined for inappropriate comments and touching of the female students. They never canned him, just gave him "study hall" duty (basically a "rubber room"). Amazing.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks that! I had a teacher senior year who spoke about her political beliefs. No one gave a fuck. If anything she was more respected and liked for treating the seniors like adults. That was tame! She never yelled or flew off the handle. Like other teachers. When I was in school we would ask our teacher what his political stance was and he refused to tell us. And if we asked him multiple times we would get detention
Public schools are not meant to be educational institutions, but as child care centers for parents. Homeschooling is an option where true learning takes place.
Not all teachers are like this. Volunteer to help a teacher for a week and you will understand the stress and inhumane amount of work teachers have to go through, and yet still not enough money to pay for rent.

Most teachers are professional adults. They have worked hard for their positions. They don't need babysitters to supervise. They ARE the supervisors of their students. If you can't trust your kids with "strangers" then opt out of public school and teach them at home yourself.

Many teachers are not like this. This is just a few. Like in any situation, there is always a few out of the norm. But I must say most kids nowadays are easily emotionally hurt, not like how it was 5-10.yrs back. Kids were more emotionally strong, Kids nowadays need to be pampered more, where everyone is a winner and everyone gets the award. Research shows a lot of these kids will have major issues in the future with depression problems.
My daughter was a senior last year and I overheard a zoom class she had. The teacher logged in, did a head count of the kids on zoom….then said “peace out, see ya Friday”😐 no lesson, no questions, no inspirational words….nothing. I’m glad she was the last of my children in the public school system.
I saw this in my daughter’s freshman college zoom class in NM. She was just given math problems in 1 class that she needed help to do with her uncle’s & cousin’s tutorial assistance. Another class involved giving written responses that validated the woke speaker’s stance. This is not education. The written essays did not even show how to improve their writing skills, or different ways to set up an analysis, etc; just a grade.
She needs teaching license pulled, not just fired. Just soo thankful I was a high school student in the 90's. Teachers were nothing like this psycho. They will put anyone into teaching these days.

The Dept head I knew retired, and his replacement was a guy from Texas whose politics fit right in. A few months on the job and it’s discovered he had a problem keeping his hands to himself according to multiple women accusers. They stopped vetting him the moment they looked at his social shit feed. That’s been a few years ago. Every time I get a panhandling email from the alumni association I get a chuckle when I delete it. At the doctorate level, especially the tenure track, it’s totally political. As teacher… keep your “personal” religious, social and political beliefs out of the classroom. Only teach facts and of course encourage critical thinkers. But my kids shouldn’t know how you feel or voted for. Learn to answer questions appropriately and if a student asked questions that may not have anything to do with the class topic, don’t be afraid to say, “ I appreciate your question, but let’s stay on topic.” Kids will have questions. You as the teacher have control of the conversation.

You're right! In the 70's & 80's I heard zero political talk in the classroom. However, in college I had a professor who distributed Noam Chomsky books and said we had to pay $3.00 for them. He was fired immediately and then arrested when he attempted retaliation against students who blew the whistle, claiming "they got me fired".

When students ask my opinion on anything political or religious, I just say it is not content related and move on. A student thanked me last year at one point when I said that, telling me that she wished her other teachers would do the same. I suspect most kids feel this way, but are afraid to say anything.

Your comment just reminded me of the 2012 election. 😞 I was in middle school at the time and our principal thought it would be lovely to have a mock election. Everyone had a day to vote for either Obama or Romney. One of the girls in my class placed a vote for Obama since he seemed to stand for everything she wanted in a president at the time. Fast forward to the day after Election Day, her father tried to kick her out of the house for voting for Obama. 🙃 We’re talking about a grown man threatening to kick out his (at the time 12-13 year old daughter) for voting a certain way in a mock election every student had to participate in. We weren’t given an option of third party or an option to simply not vote (if you didn’t cooperate you were threatened with detention). The father in general sounded abusive period but that’s the kinda thing that would make me not want to associate with him after moving out in the future.

Not all teachers are like this. In any situation or population or company, there’s always going to be abnormalities. Also schools are not really educational institutions, it’s a child care center, so kids don’t hang out in the communities to cause problems and also parents don’t have to hire babysitters. I taught at the collegiate level for 10 years. Never did this. Seems like maybe she had a mini melt down. She was 100% out of line!
She didn’t have a mini anything, the students said she did the same thing the year before, and for the whole school year. She just needed to be fired and then for the state to revoke her teaching certificate. 3 years after the fact, I hope she can no longer teach in a classroom.

I’ve seen several students saying that she’s kind of always been this way, going on political tirades before. I seriously doubt it wasn’t bright to admin’s attention. Very fact that she herself said, “go tattle on me to admin, they won’t care” Serves as evidence for that. I think the only reason administration did anything was because this was recorded and went viral on social media and reported on the news. So they knew they were going to get a bunch of flack and did something about it. But I have the feeling they’ve known for a long time that she was this way. So pay attention Alpine district parents… If you think she’s the only teacher doing this, you’re pretty naïve.

haha, I went to high school in the 90's. I can recall lots of instances where (not political rants) teachers flipped out and would have gotten fired if we had a camera recording in the class room.
Yeah, there was a teacher in Sacramento who was sending his HS students to violent ANTIFA counter-protests. Dozens of parent complaints and somehow the principal had no idea 🙄 until Project Veritas recorded him admitting it.

I question what kind of parents this teacher had. I've never been a parent, but I know how I felt and what I thought about my own parents. My dad never finished the 8th grade and my mom dropped out of high school a few months into her junior year. My dad worked as a truck driver and laborer and my mom was a housewife. My parents weren't perfect-after all, they were human. But they raised a family on the $28,785.00/year that my dad brought home (from his last tax return in 1978 before he died). We never went hungry; we always had a roof over our heads and clothes to wear. That my parents managed to do that and send me to private school is nothing short of a miracle. My parents may not have been as educated as I am, but I always thought they were brilliant for pulling that off. My parents had problems, as I said they weren't perfect, but I loved them and respected them. I feel genuinely sorry for this teacher's parents. They must be so hurt that they raised a daughter that is so disrespectful and ungrateful. I hope she's never able to get a job teaching anywhere ever again.

I too am a teacher, though only going on 5 years. I have had plenty of students ask who I voted for, what my views are on gun control and other political ideologies. All I said was this is Environmental Science so let's keep our discussions to that. My views and opinions are my own and do not need to be shared with the students. If we are discussing environmental policies of our government then once again I will share facts and figures. The last thing I would want to do is lose the trust of my students by displaying my personal views to my class while I teach.

I went to high school in the 70s. I had two teachers who did that: one was a 9th grade history teacher and a very radical liberal; the other was an 11th grade history teacher, who was a hyper-conservative.
They were both annoying as hell and I didn't really listen to either of them.

@@danielled108 actually it wasn’t at all. I went to school in the 70s and 80s. Everyone was chill and hung out together. There were mixed couples dating, gay people too. In fact-I had a gay friend in 7th grade (I actually knew he was gay before he did) at a Christian school-it bothered no one. Because we learned all about Dr. King-Skin color didn’t matter-because we were all taught that it didn’t-unlike now where everyone is indoctrinated to believe that they are some kinda victim.
The only social issue that was different from what I can see-young men were way more handsey and the sexual harassment coming from males-all colors-was worse. Aside from that the only other difference-we were taught to be resilient and pragmatic, how to take care of ourselves. We had home economics and knew how to cook, clean, sew, how to balance a checkbook and make things for ourselves. And we actually learned real history -like the root of (jealousy) and dangers of communism, Marxism, and socialism and what they lead to...tyranny.

Teacher's in this day and age, teach outside of the curriculum, EVERY DAY in our public school's. This is not an isolated incident. This particular teacher, was WELL KNOWN by the administration of her tactics in classrooms. She should have been removed long ago. The only reason it happened now,, is she was caught on video. This is happening all day, every day, all over the country. Parent's and students need to step up and remove these people from our School System's immediately. In 1967 I was in High School. This was during the war in Vietnam. The school was close to a park. it was very common to see Anti War demonstrations.

That’s was our problem in Afghanistan, we push our beliefs on them and shove it down their throats, and not surprising, it is silently rejected and completely abandoned as soon as we leave. Instead of establishing a sustainable government that they supported, we forced leaders on them that didn’t have real support amongst the average Afghan. If we did, it wouldn’t have collapsed so quickly.

I'm glad though. I learned some very valuable studying lessons from this teacher that helped me all through college and well into my career.
I had a teacher repeatedly disciplined for inappropriate comments and touching of the female students. They never canned him, just gave him "study hall" duty (basically a "rubber room"). Amazing.

Many teachers are not like this. This is just a few. Like in any situation, there is always a few out of the norm. But I must say most kids nowadays are easily emotionally hurt, not like how it was 5-10.yrs back. Kids were more emotionally strong, Kids nowadays need to be pampered more, where everyone is a winner and everyone gets the award. Research shows a lot of these kids will have major issues in the future with depression problems.

My daughter was a senior last year and I overheard a zoom class she had. The teacher logged in, did a head count of the kids on zoom….then said “peace out, see ya Friday”😐 no lesson, no questions, no inspirational words….nothing. I’m glad she was the last of my children in the public school system.

I saw this in my daughter’s freshman college zoom class in NM. She was just given math problems in 1 class that she needed help to do with her uncle’s & cousin’s tutorial assistance. Another class involved giving written responses that validated the woke speaker’s stance. This is not education. The written essays did not even show how to improve their writing skills, or different ways to set up an analysis, etc; just a grade.

Degrees don’t mean much beyond just figuring out the professor’s political stance & feeding back their own bs. Got a maters’s doing this. Had enough credits for my PhD, but got tired of the routine & didn’t do the final research.

@@maureencastillo6278 I earned an MA in Mass Comm/Journalism in 2000, and all my profs were veteran print reporters who’d earned PhDs and looking back, they were probably the final wave of actual teachers. The Dept head I knew retired, and his replacement was a guy from Texas whose politics fit right in. A few months on the job and it’s discovered he had a problem keeping his hands to himself according to multiple women accusers. They stopped vetting him the moment they looked at his social shit feed. That’s been a few years ago. Every time I get a panhandling email from the alumni association I get a chuckle when I delete it. At the doctorate level, especially the tenure track, it’s totally political. No mavericks or free spirits in the faculty lounge. Peer review=left wing circle jerk. There are nicer, less expensive wall hangings to be be had. I did enjoy the challenge, but even a phD doesn’t mean you get one of those cush gigs.

Teachers should stay away from such topics. They should remain neutral, let students make their own decisions
